    The coating on the new casing is great and all, but, well, I refurbish all sorts of electronics, including laptops. I mention Thinkpads in particular. Thinkpads made around '97 used to have that sort of supple rubberized coating too, and it was luxurious. Now you almost always have to scrape that crap off with plastic razors as it turns into a gooey, sticky mess. My GBP may be a nonfunctional mess at the moment until i get the new regulator in, but the case is nice and not sticky. Luckily I think someone fried mine early in it's life as there is almost no wear or nastiness on it. Am modding up to give to my son for Christmas. Rebuilding a DMG for myself and that way I can trade stuff with him on his, like pokemon, to make it more fun for him. And because I loved my old grey childhood companion lol.

    • @thechillhacker
      @thechillhacker 7 місяців тому

      Point being, I try to restore stuff to last longer than it's original lifespan, so I try not to do any repairs or upgrades that are not, at a minimum, to factory spec. Usually way overspec'd.

    • @Reman1975
      @Reman1975 2 місяці тому

      Yeah, that rubberised paint is vomit inducing when it get's old, but on the plus side, once it DOES turn into something with the consistency of well chewed bubble gum, isopropyl alcohol and a plastic "credit card" scraper will usually expose factory fresh shiny plastic underneath with minimal effort. Mind you, that's only minimal effort on large flat(Ish) areas, but if the mouldings have vents, grills and gaps around buttons it becomes a pain in the ring piece. :D
      Last year I was GIVEN an old Alienware laptop that had this type of paint on it. By this point it was so tacky that the thing had glued itself inside of it's bag and the original owner was so grossed out by it's stickiness that she didn't even want to touch it anymore. Once I got it out I attacked it with IPA, a plastic scraper, and a few microfiber towels for about 45 minutes, and that was all it needed to come up looking like new......... Apart from the thermal compound being 10 years old and probably like chalk by now it's a win in my book. At some point I'll have to strip it down and renew the thermal paste, but in this model it's a main board out job, and there's a hell of a lot of dismantling to get to the point where that board can come out. Not a hard job, just tedious / time consuming, and at the minute I just can't be bothered. :)

  • @Reman1975
    @Reman1975 2 місяці тому

    Interesting mod, but I'd be a bit concerned about having a soft skinned lithium polymer cell semi loose in there without any kind of protection. It looked to be getting squeezed into place against the GB pockets board, on wires and solder points. I've had first hand experience of Li-Po batteries getting punctured a few times, and it's an eye opener. The last one was a little 1000mAh single cell, and that thing went off like a roman candle. It fired foot long flames out from one end and spat burning lumps of material all over the place. It only burnt for 5 or 6 seconds, but it was pretty fierce for something so small.
    I'm very tempted to have a go at this mod, but personally, I'd want to try and make slightly more room so I could get an extra layer of rubberised heat shrink around the cell, plus find somewhere else inside the case for the charging board (I've seen a few smaller li-po charge boards have hit the market in the last few years that might be a better option for this project). For making charger led indicator windows in non transparent plastic cases, I've found that you can get bags of tiny 3mm glass balls for next to nothing, and if you drill a 2.5mm hole you can press fit one of these into it pretty easily to make a reasonably OEM looking indicator light window. The last change I'd make would be to include a JST-XH plug and socket in teh battery wire to make it eeasier to replace the battery at a later point.
    All that said, it was an interesting video, and has given me plenty of ideas about how I should go about it myself.

  • @VanguardRaven

    Does your TP4056 get hot when charging? I've had to use a 500mA charger just so it doesn't get so hot and potentially damage the battery it's right up against.

    Can someone actually explain the reason for the diode? Wouldn't a resistor do the exact same thing intended without over complicating everything?

    • @JayBoyModz

      You actually do not need any diode or resistor for most boards👍

      @@JayBoyModz how come? Wouldnt 3.7v be too much for the 3v board? Seems like overkill to me, which is why I'd have thought a resistor would drop the voltage a bit, without the need of a diode... nonetheless im gonna follow the tutorial, just wanted to know, thats all (:

      @@crueltuber2887 No problem and the Pocket and the Color board seem to do just fine with the 3.7v batteries. I have made a few hundred like that at this point and they are all still going strong 👍

      @@JayBoyModz i still dont like the idea of pushing the extra .7v, it wont directly affect it, but it would surely cause more wear and tear in the future. But yeah, interesting mod for sure, i will be doing this soon.

      @CruelTuber the diode is used to substitute for a voltage regulator. If current is high enough, a diode will drop the voltage 0.7 volts if forward biased, which would make it the battery output voltage drop from3.7 to 3.0 volts. As long as current is stable, this should work fine.

    good work. The mod seems to work fine. A couple of criticisms: I noticed you seem like you're rushing somewhat. You seem a bit heavy handed and shakey. Perhaps slow down a little and take it easy. Your soldering tip is not a good choice for this type of work. Those conical tips are garbage for most uses except very fine soldering. I see your iron has interchangeable tips, you should really use a chisel tip or better yet, a knife tip. Watching you rip off that dc jack made me shiver a little lol. I think if you had used a tip with better thermal mass, you could have desoldered it alot better.
    I'd also consider using epoxy to glue in those USB ports. Hotglue is going to come unstuck eventually.

      Thanks yeah I just shake a lot lol my hands have always been like that
      Haha you know the jack usually comes off so easy but of course in the video I struggled a bit. Is what it is, when trying to narrate, stay in focus, and work at the same time I do sometimes lose my concentration but I am working on bettering that. And as for the tip I do usually use a bit thicker of a tip, but im not a huge fan of the chisel. I didn't even notice I still had the smaller one on from some other work I was doing but I appreciate you pointing it out.
      Thanks for the comment!
