    Check out my video which adds a charging indicator LED to this McWill USB Mod Kit! This will allow you to see when the battery is done charging and best of all it only costs about $2. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/J3_Fp6V8M2c/v-deo.html

    this is cool, even for a beginner like myself the install seems pretty simple and the case mod is easy enough. i dont mind usb mini since my psp uses the same format. my only gripe would be the lack of indicator light, how sick would that look in a clear case.

    This was a really solid how-to on this little battery kit. The only thing I would have done differently is that I would have traced out the contour of the USB jack onto some painters' tape and placed it on the outside of the case as a template for the filing. What about rechargeable batteries, it only trades being set up free for having to restart the console to swap out batteries. And it's cheaper.
    Some would argue this is better, because you don't actually have to recharge the console you can just carry around extra batteries.

    Great video! poor product.
    Mini USB...why? micro USB connectors are cheap. 2 wires...why? Use a dummy cell and solder one wire from the unit to the battery contact, then there are no wires dangling from the shell begging to pull off a solder pad. Or use two cells in parallel as other comments have described for better capacity. This whole kit just seems poorly thought out. Plain old rechargeable batteries seem like a better option. Finally, I guess I'll say it. If there really is demand for this, I'll wait for BennVenn to come up with something better.

    I've been recently getting back into retro gaming and starting with the snes, I'm running into cartridges with aging old batteries. While the mods I've been looking up like this one are super cheap, there is also the investment into tools. Not that I'm complaining because, this might be a fun hobby to get into that could lead into a career path depending on how much I enjoy this. I went into computer repair right after High School but, I wasn't ready for college. I was a terrible student and didn't want to learn, I just wanted to live a life my way. I've always liked this kind of stuff. Now I want to ask, is there a resource I can do to do fun projects once I get all these tools? I just feel like as a guy just starting out, there's got to be other uses for all these tools.

      Hey Sephiroth (great name)! This is indeed a great hobby and yes, there are other uses for these tools! I frequently use some of them, for electrical repairs on my car. Hi,
    I don't know if you'll see this, but I have suggestions on how this mod can be improved.
    1] The positive terminal is removed entirely, making an entire battery compartment useless. This really bothers me for some reason. My suggestion in this case is to trim the terminal, and then solder a wire from it to the one right next to it. Then you can place it back into the shell (with maybe some kapton tape to prevent it from bridging with the contact on the board) and you can now use the second battery compartment to put in a second battery (in the same orientation as the other one) and this would double the capacity as the batteries are now in parallel.
    2] That chip on the board is a charge controller. If you look up the board number, it should have a pin diagram that tells you which is for the charging indicator LEDs. If you find it, you can then probably wire it up to the GBC LED (or an additional one) to provide insight into battery/charging status.
    In my opinion, these are two really simple ways and effective ways to improve and perhaps even complete this mod.

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 роки тому +1

      Those are fantastic ideas! I'm a little nervous about adding an extra battery, however, I do plan on making a follow up video if I can figure out how to add an LED or somehow tap into the GBC's LED like you suggested! Thank you again for the comment and suggestions! Cheers!

    • @OmegaErkz
      @OmegaErkz 4 роки тому

      @@MachoNachoProductions No problem! I can understand being nervous about the second battery (because if you put it in series instead of in parallel, you will absolutely blow the fuse), but so long as it's parallel it'll be safe. Good luck with the LED!

    • @rc_matic
      @rc_matic 4 роки тому +2

      Batteries in parallel SHOULD work, however, I'd be concerned with parasitic draw (I think that's the correct term). Both batteries will have slightly different capacities and could result in one battery charging the other when the console is shut down. 2 batteries in a closed circuit-- could be bad news. This can be fixed by adding a couple diodes.

    • @OmegaErkz
      @OmegaErkz 4 роки тому

      @@rc_matic Dropping diodes in that circuit would prevent the charger from charging the batteries, wouldn't it? Further, while the parasitic draw would have one battery charge the other, it shouldn't be a problem so long as the two batteries are the same chemistry and voltage - ie, two of the same battery.

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, this mod will work with the BennVenn backlight kit! As for it being worth it, it depends on the LiPo battery you end up using. In my install I used a 680 mAH battery and only got 2 hours of playtime. I think you can get a 1300 mAH battery and that should last roughly double that. For now, I would suggest using a pair rechargeable NiMH batteries instead since you can swap them out on the fly and wait for a new kit from McWill to come out. Hope this helps. Cheers!
