I like how Kevin Smith commented to Martin Scorsese's statement. It was very civil and eloquent. He disagreed with him, but at the same time understood his viewpoint.
I feel because Smith comes from indie 🎞 background he gets it. Scorsese’s comments further elaborated (and rightfully how he should’ve said it) was while these 🎥s are popular don’t forget about filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson, Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach, etc.
Scorcese is just not plugged in is all. Jealous he's not making that Marvel money.
Road to perdition was a comic book film.
@@CaptainSpalding72 if Scorsese got into filmmaking for the money, he wouldn't make movies like Raging Bull. A black and white movie over 2 hours long in 1980? Not many directors could've pulled that off successfully.
I'm glad Kevin is bringing the Rocketeer to the spotlight, such a great character.
Perfect casting for the lead, too. It also had an incredible score.
Disney's first comic flick
The Rocka-Who?
"superhero films are the new westerns" Kevin Smith, as insightful and funny as ever.
Steven spielberg said exactly that years before Kevin Smith 🤣
Steven Spielberg also stated that superhero films will go like the way of western films.
If only Scorcese understood this
I was going to say Spielberg already said this. But somebody already said this😅
@@frazzetafan who cares if Scorsese understands it?
The Rocketeer was a really fun movie. I loved it, and still do. But who is doing the interview? Sounds like the 'adults' in the Peanuts cartoons ha ha 😎
Tito Tim Travels the Rocketeer was directed by the same person who directed Captain America: the First Avenger. I loved both movies.
@@inugami78 They are both good movies. The 1st was definitely the best Capt America movie.
I'm glad he mentioned The Rocketeer. I remember going to see it as a kid with my Dad. The Rocketeer still holds fond memories for me.
Why can't we get Kevin Smith to direct one of these films? He loves it all so much, and I know it would be amazing 😍
Years ago he was going to direct THE GREEN HORNET, which ended up being made as a comicbook.
I love Kevin’s attitude
Rewatching this, I am definitely gonna watch Rocketeer again tonight. I don’t love his Dark Knight cast but if he directed it I’d see it... I’d see it either way.
@@jpetersgoyanks I saw it a couple of months ago on Disney plus. It still holds up. Absolutely wonderful.
Dick Tracy is the most underrated comic book movie.
Hey, this is a great film...I agree!
@@zhaoliang4217 you are right
What about Darkman with Liam Neeson? I just watched Dick Tracy last week, it was better than the last time I watched it, and I've always liked it
Yesssss thank you. Read my mind
@@SteveN-uc4xh I may be wrong, but I don't think Darkman was based on a real comic. It was Sam Raimi's idea of a good comic book character
I love listening to Kevin Smith. Very positive Man. This was a great interview :) Had a lot of fun with the movie as well!
Michael Keaton plays batman and Dafoe plays joker
Keaton or Kevin Conroy as old Bruce
He's on to something here.
If they made a Batman beyond adaptation I would love conroy to be in it
Props to the great Billy Campbell of The Rocketeer. A fantastic underrated actor who can play leading men and character roles and is in so many classics but doesn’t get enough credit. Kinda like Michael Biehn and Bruce Campbell. They are not stars but they have had amazing careers.
I have had ENOUGH of Billy Campbell.
Spot on about the Rocketeer. Such a great family movie and a young Jennifer Connelly OMG!
Gotta love Kevin, what a legend. I like how he defends Scorsese point of view while still explaining to him and a lot of other people why comic book movies are cinema.
The Ghost Rider movies suck especially the second one. The character looked cool but the scripts blow.
Underneath his jacket and t shirt is an enormous hockey jersey.
Man, either mic yourself up or at least put the subtitles of your questions on the screen.. it would enhance a great interview vid
Totally bums me out he didn’t like Flinstones, maybe I’m just a 90s kid, but I miss the flinstones and Jetsons.
first movie I saw in theaters.
Jetsons MEET the flintstones live action movie plz cus the original is a classic
I hate the Flintstones franchise as a whole. Everything about it is forgettable.
How does this video have such low views?!? I could listen to Kevin talk comics nonstop forever and thanks to his podcasts, I do.
The Shadow and the Phantom were way ahead of there time
The Phantom is awesome
The Shadow is a good movie but it's kinda flawed. Lamont makes some incredible leaps of narrative logic that happen mostly so the plot keeps going. Full disclosure I'm probably a little biased since I've heard rumors of a Shadow script that's a little more like Road to Perdition
It may be my age... but one of my FAVORITE and a most UNDERRATED superhero movie is "Batman Forever". That movie gets so much HATE. I HATED "Batman and Robin" (who didn't). I would say "Watchman" and "The Dark Knight" Are probably the BEST superhero movies.
There’s rumor of a 170 min cut of Batman Forever which could make a great movie even better!
@@jobe1728 hmmm... where can i find this?
@@tommiepattonkendrickiii1617 locked away in the WB vault unfortunately...
Kyle Chandler as The Dark Knight Return’s Superman.
He is still wearing the same size suit despite having lost a shit load of weight.
What's with the old man sport jacket? Looks like he picked that up from a cloak room.
I think this one looks much closer to his actual size than what he usually wears.
I love Kevin Smith so much. His greatest hope for something he created is that it makes his friend happy.
In the Dark Knight Returns we'll finally have another shot to cast Willem Defoe as The Joker. Imagine him up against a gruff Josh Brolin type.
JB was my choice back in the day I also kinda like a black haired Matt Damon.
I think Christoph Waltz will be better.
What about Bruce Campbell as Batman?
When are you going to make the Bluntman and Chronic movie
If I die tomorrow atleast I'll go to my grave knowing Russell Brand never played Joker.
What!? I love Russell but NO. He’d know better.... I hope. Jesus.
Russ would make a good Riddler...
Brolin's Thanos vs Ledger's Joker is an interesting comparison. You're talking about a guy who developed the character himself, even coming up with the make-up, vs an amazing actor in his own right, joined by an army of super talented vfx artists. And Ledger still has the title in my opinion, which is absolutely amazing considering everything that's come out since 2008.
Jon Hamm would be a great DKR Supes!
Affleck, Russell Brand & Chris Hemsworth in a Batman movie
I'd watch that. I liked Affleck as Bats. Hemsworth might be a lil too ripped to be Supes, well Kent really. But I think it's mostly him as Supes not Clark, so he could do it. Brand is already a bit psychotic, so perfect lol
And with Clint Eastwood as the director? SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
1:26 I liked The Flintstones(1994) as a kid, but I haven't seen it in years so I may need an updated analysis.
I don’t think it’ll actually happen but I’d love a straight up adaption of The Dark Knight Returns starring Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Billy D Williams as Two-Face and if we’re getting really crazy here, Nic Cage as Superman
Nicholson has Dementia, he cannot remember lines nor direction
I was either 10 or 11 when The Rocketear came out. remember going to the movies with my family to see it.
Underrated comic book movies that no one even realises are comic book movies (or graphic novel ones): 'Road to Perdition', 'A History of Violence' and 'Ghost World'
The comparison to Western films is a double edged sword too. They became so common and watered down that they died out, and the fatigue of comic book films nowadays is possibly hinting at a similar thing. On another note, no Marvel film will EVER be held in the same regard as the likes of 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly', or 'Once Upon a Time in the West'.
Besides The Rocketeer, there's both The Phantom and Mystery Men.
Bro. There's tons of bad ones.
Bad comic book movies: Batman and Robin, Elektra, Steel, Howard the Duck, Fan4stic, Catwoman, The Spirit, Supergirl, Superman 4, Son of the Mask, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3, X Men Origins: Wolverine, Men In Black 2, Suicide Squad, Judge Dredd (1995)...
There's are lot.
Never bad mouth Howard the duck
I would disagree with a few of these. They were all bad, but at least half of them you list were “watchable”. And I wont even count the Spider-Man, Captain America, flash, supergirl, fantastic four movies of the 80’s/90’s with the below subpar special effects and Uber cheesy costumes. Now, the ghost rider spirit of vengeance movie, however....that was on another level of very bad...
@@acommonmanwithrandomwords8373 lol yea the old 90s Cap movies are hilariously shitty
Kevin should do a rocketeer update! I'll watch Kev's take on ANYTHING, but that one would be insanely cool!
The best and most respectable response to Scorsese comment
Kevin Smith is such an intelligent thinker, and he's on the money about Martin Scorsese! I've ranted about this before, I use the "book" argument, is a book still a book if you don't agree with its contents?? Of course it is!!! I see comics adapted for the big screen as do books and I watch them both at the CINEMA!! Comics are just another form of storytelling, a similar medium to books. I mean come on they have the written word and you have to turn pages to read them!! Books also contain images and depending on the book lean towards the written word or lean towards images to convey information. That's what comics are!! Comics convey information in storytelling by using artistic images and dialogue, just like a book! And books are primarily what are adapted to create CINEMA!! In my opinion comics are books, because they are also known as comic BOOKS!! And help people in general to enjoy storytelling without having to pick a heavy novel explaining how everything looks, it helps dyslexic people with the fear of reading a story in a novel wondering if it will be misinterpreted to enjoy a adventure no matter what form it is in!! It's insulting to assume that comic book readers are less intelligent than a person that reads a novel or watches only CINEMA adapted from bestselling novels, a story is a story and anyway storytelling in image form predates the written word by millenia, people drew on caves to record events way before paper was invented, so saying that comic book art isn't CINEMA is just ignorance towards a skill that predated maybe speech itself!! Stories were told by word of mouth maybe around campfires and I'm sure drawn images may have been involved, these drawings could have been the first comics because it's well-known that throughout history a big percentage of the entire world couldn't read or write, so imagery was universally more appealing! Take fine art, you don't walk around a art gallery and think "I know what this painting needs! Some words explaining what it is!" Art is self expressive and so are comics, sometimes a picture describes a 1000 words, not that words aren't important, that's why comic BOOKS have speech bubbles, haha!! I could have done with pictures for this comment, haha!!
Rocketeer was awesome. Loved that as a kid and was sad when we never got a 2nd.
Loving the love for The Rocketeer!!
This guy walked out of Flintstones but praised suicide squad . Can't take him seriously
I definetly don't agree about there not being bad comic book movies but I couldn't agree more about the Rocketeer. I loved that movie as a kid
I loved it as a kid too. And rewatching it earlier this year, it still holds up.
If Kevin Smith doesn’t name Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a terrible movie, then he’s never seen it.
Obscure comic to be made into a series? Fell: Feral City. Loved it, lots of room for a good writer to expand in the modern age.
Ya the rocketeer was pretty awesome. Underrated
John Richmond I totally agree. Also the same director did Captain America: the First Avenger, another great movie & parts of it have the same feel of the Rocketeer.
Love the Rocketeer shoutout! :)
1:57 I'm Lutheran, so that excited me! :)
Best CBM: The Winter Soldier
Worst: Catwoman
Underrated: The Rocketeer
Best Batman: Michael Keaton
Worst: George Clooney (although his Bruce Wayne was quite good).
that billionaire swag of clooney was probably the most realistic feel to a bruce, i agree, but in a homage to whats being said in the video about cinema ( im 32 ) i wished my whole life to see BvS on screen, and while there was more to be desires i say on the edge of my chair with a stupid smile on my face the whole time and was even dodging punches and getting into it just like when i went to my first movie ever, keatons batman lol
I guess I can't offhand think of a "bad" comic book/superhero movie. But I've never seen Fan4stic or New Mutants.
But I'm a comic geek, so I can find things to like about Catwoman, Elektra, Supergirl, (the Australian) Man-Thing, the Hasselhof Nick Fury, Model By Day, Meteor Man, Blank Man, Steel, My Super Ex-Girlfriend... and things to love about Super, Brightburn, The Specials, Hancock, Unbreakable... Well... the trilogy of Unbreakable, Split and Glass was a bit of a letdown in the third act but it works if you just sit and watch them as a triple feature.
I do find it interesting that everyone complains that Fox took two tries to do the Dark Phoenix Saga and messed it up, they did that Wolverine Origins and messed up Deadpool... But no one gripes that much that Snyder took bits of Dark Knight Returns and pieced of The Death of Superman, jammed them together into one movie and totally pooched it.
I love The Rocketeer. I saw it in the theater when I was a kid
1:11 I’m all about this. The whole thing he says here, “varying degrees”. Yes! Point of fact, I might agree with all his picks and all his answers.
When discussing not seeing a bad comic book movie, he must not have remembered seeing "Howard The Duck" or "Red Sonja."
Which are entertaining movies so.....🤷🏻♂️✌🏻😁
The Rocketeer was amazing.
Most underrated comic book movie has to be The extraordinary adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec that movie RULES
My Dark Knight Returns cast? Weirdly solidified by another comics adaptation: Happy!. Chris Meloni as Bruce Wayne and Patrick Fischler as the Joker.
Rocketeer is amazing
Worst comic book movie? Easy, it's Wanted. Most under-rated? There's 2 it's The Phantom and Tank Girl. Don't forget A history of Violence was nominated for an Oscar and is a comic book movie. Good work saying how I feel about all this stuff.
Affleck was the bomb as batman.
still waiting to hear his take on joker. Wtf man you do every comic movie BUT joker? What gives.
He's spineless, he ain't gonna REALLY critique none o' these movies
@@bOmBAsTiK with him being such a big fan of them theres a chance he finds a little bit of good in each like he said. it's just like people who's favorite artists puts out terrible albums but they are so in love with anything involving them they can find some sort of reason to like it
Just goes to show, cinema is subjective.
The Rocketeer and Joker were really good!
3:45 George Clooney Again. lol
Road to Perdition should be up on the list for top comic films
Did you see the Green Lantern? Yecch
2nd best Comic Book movie is “Eating Gilbert Grape”… I mean that superhero escaped getting eaten the whole movie… that Is a Super Hero!! It’s a Super Power.
Dark Night Returns was the comic book that got me into comics
A KEVIN SMITH AND TARANTINO COLLAB WOULD BE AMAZING
How about Steel, Catwoman, Jonah Hex?
Rocketeer is AMAZING!!!
Most underrated blade, blade 2, the crow,
Best comic book movie.
Unbreakable
It’s like you completely forgot about the Richard Donner Superman.
Superman Returns, Superman 4, Thor dark world, Fantastic Four, Dark Phoenix-just can’t do those.
The Rocketeer is a great film.
I was super into that mivie when i was a kid
WB needs to get Kevin to do Casting!!!!!
Yes, Catwoman. That thing was ridiculous lol. But I do love a comic book movie.
1:13 So he likes Batman and Robin I presume? Yippee, I am not the only one! :)
@West Bradley-Taubner Me too! :)
Best comic book movie is Rocky, he took 1000 punches and didn’t die. That is a Super Hero!!
Did he say Thanos doesn't exist like the joker does???
He means that Thanos is a CG character made using a motion capture suit. Whereas Joker is a guy in makeup.
I agree about The Rocketeer. Supergirl writing and directing was unworthy of Helen Slater's excellent performance.
The Rocketeer is a good movie. Directed by Joe Johnston who did Captain America.
It was reported as the reason he got the gig on First Avenger.
Dolph Lundgren as the punisher
Road to Perdition is an underrated comic book movie!!!
Kev, there’s already a great dark night returns movie in two parts. It’s no less legitimate just because it’s animated. Making a live action one would be redundant
He loves it.
I disagree on your claim of redundancy. There’s always room for another interpretation of something.
ultra dark graphic novels don't work as movies. Batman versus Superman reveals this... where the best elements of the film aren't unrelentingly depressing.
Frank Miller, Alan Moore work in the graphic novel universe, but are impossible to translate intro a wide appeal film.
val kilmer comment left e rolling wtf
Spot on!!
Keaton comes back for The Dark Knight Returns
There's actually comic book movies that Kevin Smith thinks are bad? I don't believe you.
It doesn't sound like Smith has any understanding at all of why Scorsese doesn't feel Marvel movies arent cinema. Like he can only feel things through nostalgia. The idea that most of mainstream cinema is shot entirely through a filter of expensive nostalgia must be a pretty chilling thought to someone who genuinely loves movies, rather than comic books shaped liked movies
ooof, I love ya Kev, but Russell Brand was even an awful choice for Joker 3 years ago, nevermind now him basically turning into like another Alex Jones
Love that dude
I love rocketeer. And I also have the opinion that all comic book movies are good.
Kevin smith is a treasure
I think the best Batman was Christian Bale. Just my opinion.
agrree
I loved rockateer!!
I think Kevin should direct a Rocketeer reboot/sequel
Swamp thing 2 with heather locklear,
The absolute proof to sequels which are worse than the original.
Best comic book movie ever,
Toxic Avenger. With honours above the rest.
Plot twist:
Scorsese: Musicals are not cinema either.
Underrated for me billy Zane's the phantom that was the shit
If you listen to the commentary tracks for the 4 Batman movies from the 80’s and 90’s it sounds like Kevin Smith hates those films. So I’m surprised he was having trouble naming one that he thought was bad.
