I was at a cop's funeral in NH a few years back on a cold raw day and when the procession started it was like hippity-hop-to-the-barber-shop. There were small contingents from different depts. with Captains and Lieutenants and no one was stepping up. I jumped out and got at least my section in step, calling out a quiet cadence. I tried to be as subtle as possible with it because it wasn't my show, but I think everyone found it a little soothing to listen to us in step. Didn't have to buy a beer at the bar afterwards.
I've become team-lead multiple times in networking and systems and I never once asked for it. If you're competant enough to where everyone comes to you with the questions, you might get promoted too fast and piss people off around you and then you have other problems to deal with...
Thats my current issue. Trying to meet expectations, closing the learning gap, and play catchup with knowledge, all while trying to acquiesce the guidance sent down. But its the same concept of filling in a hole with dirt. There are 100 ways to do it, and you dont know where to start. Just have to do it. Otherwise you wont learn. Its just growing pains.

When I was a MACV-SOG Recon/ Brightlight Team leader, I would question myself while flying into a mission, "What am I doing here, I have these men's lives in my hands, they depend on me" Then I would say "Come on, get it together, you have this" I knew what I had to do and I was good at it. I've been in a lot of firefights. I was good at giving commands and calling in fire power and extractions when needed... I talked about this with John "Tilt" Mayers and a few other team leaders. They said they felt the same way. That, that is what makes a good team leader. Knowing what your capability is, grabbing the Bull by the horns and run with it... I had a lot of missions before going into SOG. My first mission I was a 1-1, assistant team leader, with Dan "Stinky" Ster, all my missions after that, I was the 1-0 team leader. Too many Chiefs. I agree with the approach, it earns loyalty and elevates the team as a whole. Overly assertive creates conflict. Ride the waves and keep everyone’s head above water. If recognition is what you seek, in time it will come, if you deserve it.
No one is born to lead, you train, observe and communicate until you learn the ropes and policy. Being a leader is a thankless and lonely job. Your boss will give you "constructive criticism " and your subordinates resent you. Watch out for office politics and field in subordination. Everyone wants to lead until things get difficult. Whether working at a sandwich shop or running a crew of 30, your always working from a deficit. My advice for future leaders is to mature in your experience and attitude, don't be a "yes" person and don't take anything for granted.
Spot on!! reminds of the scene from The Avengers when the Cap arrived in NYC and started barking orders then the NYPD Lieutenant stated "Why the hell should I take orders from you?" then the Chetaury landed and Cap busted some skulls, that busted some egos and the boys took Steve's lead.
The real issues come in situations when you see problems and threats coming your way before all the others e.g. you have more experience or understanding etc. Because in these situations you have to wait until actual damage is done to your unit or the risk is way too high for SHTF so everyone else also recognize the problem and finally let you take charge. Simple, you lead when it's necessary. But first start off in life by taking charge, and leading yourself. In which the objective should never be to lead, but to get the job done. But if it just so happens that people respect your work so much that they come to you for advice, and or they appoint you to a leadership position you accept it.
I got my job dialed in, I've been cross trained and I train everyone with no discrimination so long as they are humble and willing to learn which most people are. I'm getting cross trained on a third position atm. I do what I'm told and follow orders to a tee. It's the waiting game that's the hardest part. Boss says I'll get promoted eventually but god damn am I'm ready to get after it today
In these days, people really hate being uncomfortable. They're really emotional, hate conflict and hate being corrected. Just give authentic gratitude whenever someone has negative feedback and just do the right things. Handle being really uncomfortable and do the work others won't. There's plenty! You'll barely have to talk and you'll receive recognition for what you do. Hopefully, not in front of your peers too much. Especially those who are cut throats trying to get you fired. Also, you'll gain respect from those that matter, receive other opportunities which also falls under better protection.
Work with others. If for instance, you are dealing with anyone...like a nurse or medical professional and they tell you, for example, "NO! You're NEVER SUPPOSED TO do that!" But you don't always do what they are telling you to do. Nor do you incorrectly do things that will cause you to get physically sick or something or whatever they are concerned about or worried about happening...or when you try to explain what you mean by what you're behaving like... Then they tell you, "I'm not going to discuss it with you!" 🙄 OK. So I'll behave as well as demonstrate to that individual what I'm doing so that person will better understand. I cannot only just tell that individual how positively Sonny Puzikas Jocko Willink Have impacted and affected me...I will need to demonstrate that and show them by my behaviors and attitudes.

In work environment you need to be more persistent. Passively stepping in while waiting for an opportunity is not ideal. We live in an extremely aggressive and competitive world where desire and hunger at the end of the day wins. It's competition, and constantly trying to challenge the existing leader isn't a bad thing. It's a motivator for those on top and on the bottom to constantly find creative and efficient ways to solve issues.

I'm not as wise as jocko, but if you actually know your shit just whisper good idea's people will start to notice, let bad leaders make their mistakes, step on toes politely and call it constructive criticism. I find it easy to be a leader when I'm not a 'manager' rapport is a lot easy to build and people are more willing to accept that you don't have ulterior motives. Has fortunately come in hand understress when supervisors have made dangerous calls and I've been able to override some decisions. And he's right, don't go looking for it, but be good and it'll find you.

I think you might be more so worried about what will happen after the individual gets offended. Because say they do, then what? They might not want to efficiently complete the tasks, do it a different way from how they're suppose to do it or even not do it at all. So that's when I think being humble comes into play and being tight with your team. If you're humble and you and your team are tight, when you need to tell your allies to do something a certain way (and explain why) and they may be doing it poorly or the wrong way, then they'll understand and follow orders/diplomatically try and optimize the order with you. If not, well they'll just get huffy and upset inside. So if you're doing everything in your power to be the best leader and the ally isn't complying well, odds are your soldier/employee is in the wrong and you need to either question their feelings about the orders you're directing to them 1 on 1 or counsel them if things are getting too severe. Just one mans thoughts.
You will always have to deal with feelings of what people think of you and not wanting to offend. In today's world, everyone gets offended in one way or the other OR FOR A REASON. Sometimes it's your fault but most of the time this is used to manipulate you and the situation. Some people are so good at it that they ride the "guilty" train over you. Making you second guess your approach. This is done to control you and/or the situation. Get rid of these people asap. I always hear the same excuses, " I'm playing devils advocate", or "I'm trying to toughen you up". This is called gaslighting and is destructive to teams and leadership. Narcissism is rampant in the workplace and sometimes your boss will be a narcissist. They will make you feel bad to feed thier need for negativity. They are not happy unless you are not happy. Get away from these people or learn how to deal with a narcissist.

You know what my problem is by listening to people like Jocko or other inspirational people? I see a lot of people saying how he changed their life, made them a better man or a better father, etc. But the problem here is you’re not listening to yourself. Someone else’s OPINION is running your life. Life could be lived an infinite amount of different ways but you chose to let this guy or someone else tell you how to live it. You’ll lose yourself in the process, you’ll lose your identity in the process. Jocko only follows Jocko. I’m willing to bet money he doesn’t take advice from anyone but himself. So why don’t you? Trust yourself, trust your instincts, listen to that inner voice, follow your own feelings for they have the answer to your problems. You should never depend on an outside source to tell you how to live your life because they don’t know you or your life. Life spawned you here without a manual, you gotta figure this shit out yourself. You don’t need strangers telling you how to live, just figure it out yourself. What you’ll gain by doing it yourself is independence and identity. Inspirational figures like Jocko will take your identity from you. Listen to yourself. I literally read and listened to self help books and videos for 12 years STRAIGHT. I tried to take action as much as I could but that wasn’t the issue I’m talking about. The issue was that I never not once needed or used anything the self help material taught me. NONE. I found that all that helped me was my own feelings and instincts in every given situation guiding me but I always tried to remember what I heard in these kinds of motivational or informative videos and books. None of it helped. So starting today I’m gonna drop ALL THIS SHIT and listen to ME. For ME is the only one who gives a true shit how ME end up. The best advice is the simplest advice and usually it’s a universal one phrase and not a long list of 10 fucking things to remember. My universal phrase is “follow your feelings”. Your identity is at its peak when you do that and everything you do you do it because it resonates with you. You don’t do it for Jocko, you don’t do it for your parents, you do it for you. And when you do it for you, it FEELS RIGHT and as a result you’re happy with your decision. The only thing in life that matters is human emotion so it makes sense to focus on that. So the universal advice is to “follow your feelings”. The rest should fall into place. I’m done listening to other people like Jocko and advice and all that bullshit. From now on I only take advice from myself. Following your inner compass which is your own feelings. Thinking about “following your feelings” yields a different result than just implementing “following your feelings” so don’t try to reason with it. Just do it. I’m done with this shit, I’m listening to myself. That’s what I’m gonna do now.

No one is born to lead, you train, observe and communicate until you learn the ropes and policy. Being a leader is a thankless and lonely job. Your boss will give you "constructive criticism " and your subordinates resent you. Watch out for office politics and field in subordination. Everyone wants to lead until things get difficult. Whether working at a sandwich shop or running a crew of 30, your always working from a deficit. My advice for future leaders is to mature in your experience and attitude, don't be a "yes" person and don't take anything for granted.

The real issues come in situations when you see problems and threats coming your way before all the others e.g. you have more experience or understanding etc. Because in these situations you have to wait until actual damage is done to your unit or the risk is way too high for SHTF so everyone else also recognize the problem and finally let you take charge. Simple, you lead when it's necessary. But first start off in life by taking charge, and leading yourself. In which the objective should never be to lead, but to get the job done. But if it just so happens that people respect your work so much that they come to you for advice, and or they appoint you to a leadership position you accept it.
I got my job dialed in, I've been cross trained and I train everyone with no discrimination so long as they are humble and willing to learn which most people are. I'm getting cross trained on a third position atm. I do what I'm told and follow orders to a tee. It's the waiting game that's the hardest part. Boss says I'll get promoted eventually but god damn am I'm ready to get after it today

In these days, people really hate being uncomfortable. They're really emotional, hate conflict and hate being corrected. Just give authentic gratitude whenever someone has negative feedback and just do the right things. Handle being really uncomfortable and do the work others won't. There's plenty!
You'll barely have to talk and you'll receive recognition for what you do. Hopefully, not in front of your peers too much. Especially those who are cut throats trying to get you fired. Also, you'll gain respect from those that matter, receive other opportunities which also falls under better protection.

If for instance, you are dealing with anyone...like a nurse or medical professional and they tell you, for example,
"NO! You're NEVER SUPPOSED TO do that!"
But you don't always do what they are telling you to do. Nor do you incorrectly do things that will cause you to get physically sick or something or whatever they are concerned about or worried about happening...or when you try to explain what you mean by what you're behaving like...
Then they tell you,
"I'm not going to discuss it with you!"

In work environment you need to be more persistent. Passively stepping in while waiting for an opportunity is not ideal. We live in an extremely aggressive and competitive world where desire and hunger at the end of the day wins. It's competition, and constantly trying to challenge the existing leader isn't a bad thing. It's a motivator for those on top and on the bottom to constantly find creative and efficient ways to solve issues.
To be fair though, there's nothing passive about what he said.

Also with a tad of some kind of primitive drive to be the top chimp and the dominant ones is what people desire, so why would they want to be outdone and controlled? nobody wants to be controlled, well some freaks do, but most don't want to be out shined and made to look less competent, nobody wants to look like a puppet or feel like one, though these are misconceptions I believe these are the stronger variables than what Jocko stated.

I'm not as wise as jocko, but if you actually know your shit just whisper good idea's people will start to notice, let bad leaders make their mistakes, step on toes politely and call it constructive criticism. I find it easy to be a leader when I'm not a 'manager' rapport is a lot easy to build and people are more willing to accept that you don't have ulterior motives.
Has fortunately come in hand understress when supervisors have made dangerous calls and I've been able to override some decisions.

How do you not care what others think? How do you get rid of that feeling of not wanting to offend someone? I don’t want to offend anyone so I leave it... maybe I’m scared of confrontation?
I think you might be more so worried about what will happen after the individual gets offended. Because say they do, then what? They might not want to efficiently complete the tasks, do it a different way from how they're suppose to do it or even not do it at all. So that's when I think being humble comes into play and being tight with your team. If you're humble and you and your team are tight, when you need to tell your allies to do something a certain way (and explain why) and they may be doing it poorly or the wrong way, then they'll understand and follow orders/diplomatically try and optimize the order with you. If not, well they'll just get huffy and upset inside. So if you're doing everything in your power to be the best leader and the ally isn't complying well, odds are your soldier/employee is in the wrong and you need to either question their feelings about the orders you're directing to them 1 on 1 or counsel them if things are getting too severe.

You will always have to deal with feelings of what people think of you and not wanting to offend. In today's world, everyone gets offended in one way or the other OR FOR A REASON. Sometimes it's your fault but most of the time this is used to manipulate you and the situation. Some people are so good at it that they ride the "guilty" train over you. Making you second guess your approach. This is done to control you and/or the situation. Get rid of these people asap. I always hear the same excuses, " I'm playing devils advocate", or "I'm trying to toughen you up". This is called gaslighting and is destructive to teams and leadership. Narcissism is rampant in the workplace and sometimes your boss will be a narcissist. They will make you feel bad to feed thier need for negativity. They are not happy unless you are not happy. Get away from these people or learn how to deal with a narcissist.

You know what my problem is by listening to people like Jocko or other inspirational people? I see a lot of people saying how he changed their life, made them a better man or a better father, etc. But the problem here is you’re not listening to yourself. Someone else’s OPINION is running your life. Life could be lived an infinite amount of different ways but you chose to let this guy or someone else tell you how to live it. You’ll lose yourself in the process, you’ll lose your identity in the process. Jocko only follows Jocko. I’m willing to bet money he doesn’t take advice from anyone but himself. So why don’t you? Trust yourself, trust your instincts, listen to that inner voice, follow your own feelings for they have the answer to your problems. You should never depend on an outside source to tell you how to live your life because they don’t know you or your life. Life spawned you here without a manual, you gotta figure this shit out yourself. You don’t need strangers telling you how to live, just figure it out yourself. What you’ll gain by doing it yourself is independence and identity. Inspirational figures like Jocko will take your identity from you. Listen to yourself.
I literally read and listened to self help books and videos for 12 years STRAIGHT. I tried to take action as much as I could but that wasn’t the issue I’m talking about. The issue was that I never not once needed or used anything the self help material taught me. NONE. I found that all that helped me was my own feelings and instincts in every given situation guiding me but I always tried to remember what I heard in these kinds of motivational or informative videos and books. None of it helped. So starting today I’m gonna drop ALL THIS SHIT and listen to ME. For ME is the only one who gives a true shit how ME end up. The best advice is the simplest advice and usually it’s a universal one phrase and not a long list of 10 fucking things to remember. My universal phrase is “follow your feelings”. Your identity is at its peak when you do that and everything you do you do it because it resonates with you. You don’t do it for Jocko, you don’t do it for your parents, you do it for you. And when you do it for you, it FEELS RIGHT and as a result you’re happy with your decision. The only thing in life that matters is human emotion so it makes sense to focus on that. So the universal advice is to “follow your feelings”. The rest should fall into place. I’m done listening to other people like Jocko and advice and all that bullshit. From now on I only take advice from myself. Following your inner compass which is your own feelings. Thinking about “following your feelings” yields a different result than just implementing “following your feelings” so don’t try to reason with it. Just do it. I’m done with this shit, I’m listening to myself. That’s what I’m gonna do now.

Not saying everything Jocko points out is true but he leaves out (at least to me) one very important aspect. I'm quite sure that even when he was a private, if he'd go down to tell "guys how about we do it like this", people would actually to listen to him.
