Thanks for tuning in! I hope you enjoy this video. I wanted to see how budget-friendly I could be while creating an inexpensive desk, and this is the best I could come up with for now. I have also created plans, so check them out here diycreators.gumroad.com/l/40dollardesk
I've already told you I very much enjoy ur videos!! THIS video came at the right time!! I'm in need of a sewing table, not wanting to spend a lot of money (LOL) my husband had convenieced me to clean off several concrete blocks in the back yard and we would get a piece of wood for the top!! A solid piece of wood alone was going to cost close to a hundred bucks!! Neither of us "really" knowing how to work with wood (all that I do know I've learned from you) his idea, was going to be the only choice I had!! Now with this video and plans I can get from ur web - I myself can do this!! FOR LESS MONEY!!!! Without using the tilted saw (for the sides of desk) I could put two straight pieces in there, right? We have the saw that u cut the rest of the wood with. Oh I don't have the piece that makes hidden screw holes - but that's ok!! I have stain and varnish left from an old project!! Thank you thank you so very much!!!
Always impressive! So many clever touches in this video, up to and including splitting the window in two during the sponsor segment. With the build continuing in one window, and the segment running in the other, we get the sponsor's message without any break in the action. Elegant and seamless. Great job, Glen!
I have a habit of over complicating things… I love how you kept this minimal, with an understanding I could make it as complicated as I want :) I always learn something from your videos.
Desk looks good. Best way to mate the 2 halves together is push them against each other, clamp them down and run the skil saw along the join - then they will be exactly parallel and should be a perfect join.
Interesting thought for getting a perfect join. Both pieces receive the same cut one on each side of the blad in this manner. Do you have experience here as I haven't seen that done anywhere? I am wondering on the safety of execution in this manner.
@@darkvirisI tried it out and it worked great! The key to remember which I should have thought of it before I did it is to clamp them to the work surface and not to each other. I made that mistake and had a scary kickback.
@@darkvirisI came here to ask something similar. I’m so glad the hive think responded. Kickback did not come across my mind until I read your comment. As below said, I think clamping to the base or as glen said, a table saw would be the options. To your question though, there are a few vids on long side joinery like this.
I stumbled upon "How to Build a Budget Desk - Step-by-Step DIY" video, and it inspired me to get creative with my furniture. The presenter's explanations were easy to understand, and I appreciated the emphasis on cost-effective solutions throughout the build.
I clicked on this video hoping to save some money on furniture and I got exactly what I was looking for. The host's detailed instructions and affordable materials list made it seem like building a desk was within reach for anyone. It's inspired me to get creative and tackle more DIY projects around the house.
That's a gorgeous build, and proof you can make construction lumber into beautiful furniture. Gets me inspired every time I see your videos. Glad to have you back.
So simple and good lookin... And the budget!!! You seems to be one of the few famous youtube hobby woodworkers that did not started making things more and more complicated. Respect for that! P.S. It's soooooo good to have you back here 🙂
I have made this same desk at least 50 times. I’ve sold them within two days on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace for $150 a piece. Thanks for being an inspiration my guy 👍
If you're looking to upgrade your workspace on a budget, this DIY desk tutorial is a winner. The step-by-step guide and affordable materials featured in the video turned what seemed like a daunting task into a manageable and enjoyable project, resulting in a custom desk that suits my needs perfectly.
Necessity...due to lack of money, is the mother of all inventions. I should make a placard as wood project out of that... Very nice, and it feels as satisfying as any black-walnut-resin-took-three-months-to-built video to watch. Keep it up!
That desk looks awesome! I'm building it! By the way, pine has a lot of resin. You could blacken the legs with steelwool/vinegar for a really cheap option too. Like you said a preconditioner works (or water) to help make the treatment less blotchy.
Love your videos. Clear and easy to follow. This is a great desk. One tip to make your life a little easier joining up the top. If you have it close and just want to match your joint perfectly, push the two pieces together and take your saw and "cut" the joint. Try to get your blade half on each piece, in a single pass. That way even if your blade is slightly off 90, they'll match perfectly.
I've built several table tops like this. Including a coffee table top and my kitchen table top. Save yourself the headache and use 5-1/4 stock (true 1 inch). Edges are square and the boards are much straighter. There is still some sanding but if you line it up right and take your time, you can limit it. You can use 2X stock but it's a ton of extra work and I don't have time for that.
Looks great. Your best bet would be to leave the lumber in a dry environment for as long as possible at home before using it. Months if possible. Framing lumber moves around a lot and the warp you sanded out won't be the end of the warping you're going to see. Love the design!
Hi Glen, I am really very glad that you are back, i like the way you present your content. Just a tip, if you want to give your LED strip in the back more than just a cosmetic appearance but function as a small wall washing light behind your monitor to reduce eye fatigue (and also help IPS glow problem monitors), use a 45 degree aluminum channel instead to cast light over a longer surface area instead of spot lighting it.
This was great. And I appreciate you *doing* with less and showing how it works instead of just saying, "If you don't have X you can just do Y." Appreciate it!
Pretty cool project! Awesome you made it for less than 40 bucks! Love the legs, at first sight I thought it was a steel frame, which would not have been possible within this budget. Good solution to make it out of wood and just paint it black!
Sir…thank you! I’ve been looking at the ikea build everyone is doing but it was already over 400 dollars. I just spent around 1,500 bucks upgrading my pc and was looking for ways to save to get a desk! Thank you! Subscribed!
Lovely build! A small piece of advice for future builds - when screwing the base to the top, take seasonal wood movement into account. When humidity and temperature change, wood also sligtly changes in size, mostly perpendicular to the grain direction. Given that your top is pretty wide and made out of construction lumber, it will very likely shrink and expand by a few tenths of an inch. Because that dimension change only happens perpendicular to the grain, the way you screwed the base in will fight this tendency and the wood will most likely crack.
You're one of my favorite DIY UA-cam creators, I never plan to take on doing any of this but enjoy watching these so much, thank you for all the effort you put into these!
I liked some of the technique employed in building the desk. I would probably make the top and purchase a open frame so I can alternate between sitting and standing at home to alleviate back strains. The use of 2x12s for the top is an idea I had not considered as I was so focus on wanting to buy a live slab and build a river desk with my brother.
If I'm trying to rip a glue seam, I put them both together and have light clamping to allow kirf to pass through. Then I just rip down the seam and they will be as close as you can get without a jointer or trying to jig it up on a tablesaw. I have planers, jointers, tablesaws (yes plural) but I love trying to make things work otherwise. For example, I had a bunch of walnut, and I really didn't want to have to power up all the things so I just pulled out track saw, a doweling jig and did it that way. A little bit of sanding and it was fine, and it was fun. Easy to just run things through jointer, planer and domino it all (I don't have a domino, that's still a crazy expensive tool!) but doing it by hand can work as well too. Also, that ODyn straight edge is fire. Never saw that before! I Want one now. I have a johnson 8 footer but that odyn looks cooler.
It's good to have you back glen. I've been waiting for your new video. Hope you are feeling well. Your video really inspiring me to do some of your project(although i haven't started yet 😂) but if i may, this is the one i would started to do. Can't wait to see you next projects.
Hey and thank you, I didn't mean to make you wait I just had some things that I had to attend to. I am feeling great. And I'm glad these videos were able to inspire you, but you need to get started lol.
This is perfect timing. My wife needs a desk for our new office space and she really likes the design of this one. Looks like I have some work to do! 😂
Hey, I love the video's! Also, I'm a plumber. You need to get your water heater worked on. The flexible hoses need to be removed (search sharkbite water heater hose lawsuit for info), and your expansion tank isn't mounted correctly even though they have a bracket right there. Anyway, I really love the videos, you've helped me learn a lot of skills building your projects! Keep it up!
This is awesome, love it! One recomendation; If you move the part of the base that goes across the underside back of the desk inward maybe 5-6 inches, it will leave a lip that would super usefull for clamping on monitor arms, mic arms, etc. :)
That's a very nice looking table. This shows how nice projects for the home can be made with basic tools and home store lumber and supplies. Thank you for showing us the build and the drawbacks you encountered. I look forward to your next video. I've always enjoyed them. 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤
A trick to avoid most warping with wood like that is to rip cut about 0.5" on the left and right of the pith to remove the pith Then glue the boards back together. Also highly recommend a hand plane. Used they are very cheap and will really help when gluing your edges back together and also resurfacing your top.
Absolutely beautiful 🤩. I already have a few wood grain table tops that are in need of legs and some 2x4’s/2x3’s just laying around my house. So this came in handy, because all of the replacement legs on Amazon and at retail stores are $40 and above for 4 straight legs. The legs you made would cost every bit of $100 or more on Amazon, but they would be much thinner. Great job 👏🏾.
Hey Glen, To get a tight seam for the top glue up, you could have made a cut down the "seam" after you squared the edges up, and you would have had a perfect glue line.
@@DIYCreators You're welcome! Just hot glue a few places along the edge and clamp the boards together for a couple minutes, then take the clamps off and cut down the line on the table saw or circular saw. I've done that for years when it's easier than running the boards thru the jointer. Best part is that, even if you use the circular saw and you're not exactly at 90°, the boards still fit together like a glove.
Kudos! What a friendly approach and detailed instructions make it a breeze to follow, even for beginners. Using affordable materials, the video proves that creating a functional and stylish desk doesn't have to break the bank, making it a must-watch for anyone looking to personalize their workspace.
Nice project, well done! Have used your technique @2:52 many times - with the exception of alternating the pocket screws so each side gets support from the screw. Yes more screws are used but I’ve found the result much stronger and less prone to warpage- especially with the size wood being used. Keep up the great projects and take care. Thanks
Very well done and with simple materials. great desk for very low cost. I will offer one piece of advice. When picking your lumber avoid the heart of the tree (center of tree) these are boards that will definitely cup over time. However if its all you have, then like he did in the video make sure they are flipped in the opposite direction as this will mitigate some cupping. 5:36 for reference. C Channels can also be very helpful in preventing cupping in the future depending on your design.
Even though this tutorial is two months ago I still enjoyed it , I’m looking to make a craft desk for my dinning room turned into a craft room now , but need storage solutions also but this is a start now. I think I can do it .
Hey dude, so glad to see you posting again. Just an FYI, wood glue bonds to wood fiber, it doesn't bond well to dry wood glue. Your better off skipping that step and just gluing the board in one go
Next time if there's a gap between the two bits of timber for the top get your track saw and just cut straight down between both bits so you take a bit off the left side and a bit off the right side that way they'll close together perfectly
That desk turned out fantastic. Great job. I have a nice desk top and was looking to make my own legs...I think I found my inspiration. Thanks for the video.
Gorgeous work sir! You are a master. If I build this, I might have to change just a few details to make the legs individually removable for easier moving
Greetings from the city of Grozny! I am inspired by your videos, thank you and those like you who post their work, it would be cool if the drawings were still posted.
That looks very nice. The only thing I’ve ever built was a raised bed for my garden. I don’t know if I can build a desk like this again I say it’s nice.
Awsome table . Love it. will try to replicate it. and I love your mentality of " keeping the cost down " In these days anything saved is that much earned. Keep up the good work . God bless you friend.
In the near future I will be a home owner. Your channel will be top of my list and I will even go back and rewatch all your old videos lol I'm particularly interested in renovating a back porch that is enclosed. I plan on opening it up and releveling the platform. If you have an opportunity to make a video in that area please do 🙏🏾
The boards are guaranteed to warp and split when you use the pith. Cut the area away and you'd have some nice and stable quarter sawn lumber in your case. It is possible to make a jig to cut perfect straight lines so the joint is nearly invisible even before clamping. Also, screwing the base directly to the top will cause splitting in the tabletop as seasons change over the years (wood takes up more moisture in humid summer and loses in dry winter). Sealing the top (on all sides) would help prevent this.
Thanks for tuning in! I hope you enjoy this video. I wanted to see how budget-friendly I could be while creating an inexpensive desk, and this is the best I could come up with for now. I have also created plans, so check them out here diycreators.gumroad.com/l/40dollardesk

So happy to see your creating again, looking forward to all the new content, thank you from Ireland 🇮🇪
Awesome build!! Great that you showed us how to build it with simple tools. Not all of us a jointers and plainers. Appreciate it. Cheers!!!
I Truly appreciate makwrs that show their mistakes, and, ways to fix them !
Plus your videos are chock full of helpful tips ! 😀
Awsome table . Love it. will try to replicate it. and I love your mentality of " keeping the cost down " In these days anything saved is that much earned. Keep up the good work . God bless you friend.
I really look forward to your videos. They calm my nerves and put my anxiety at ease. Thank you 🙏🏻
It just wouldn’t be right without the leds bro. Good to have you back brother
In the near future I will be a home owner. Your channel will be top of my list and I will even go back and rewatch all your old videos lol
I'm particularly interested in renovating a back porch that is enclosed. I plan on opening it up and releveling the platform. If you have an opportunity to make a video in that area please do 🙏🏾
This is exactly what we needed! Looking forward to more build videos from you!
Awesome, thank you!
That is gorgeous! Just the kind of thing I want to build for my teenage son’s bedroom. You are a great source of inspiration! Top work!
Glad you’re back. Nice project. Great for gifting grandkids.
Awesome work as usual, Glen! And the Aura is a quite appropriate sponsorship for a video like this.
Desk looks great!! Neat and clean
Simple, clean, sturdy, and inexpensive. What else does anyone really need?
Nice one Glen. Very simple, very functional and it will last decades.
Had seen this video when it first came out. Now I just finished a 5ft version of this desk. Going to fit in my space just fine. Thanks
Excellent job. Looks like high end furniture!
Thank you!
I truly love your videos, as a resin creater of nik nak, you give me so many ideas to join the two crafts together, im glad your back😂😅😊
Glad to see you back with new projects. This will be a great process to follow to build a plant stand.
Anytime, anywhere, I hear someone say they want a clean look, I think of you!
😂 is that so ?
GLAD TO HAVE YOU BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really nice work. Thank you for sharing that.
Great tip tinting the filler! Definitely gonna use that one in the future
