2021 Texas Freeze Fish Kill Report
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 жов 2024
- This is a full report of the Texas fish kill, currently. We are joined by Capts Wayne Davis, Ruben Garza, Brian Barrera, Michael Crisman, Dean Thomas, Frank Zequira, Scott Null, Alan Hall, Jim West, and Chuck Uzzle. This video covers the Lower Laguna Madre, Port Mansfield, Baffin Bay, Rockport, Aransas Pass, Port O'Oconnor, Matagorda, East Galveston, and Sabine. Thank you so much for all the help putting this together, guys!
Approximate timestamps 1:30 Isabella 6:45 Port Mansfield 13:30 Baffin 16:00 Aransas Pass 18:00 Rockport 19:50 Port O'Oconnor 25:00 East Galveston, 29:00 Sabine.
Thanks for doing this! I was in a rush to get it out and didn’t get it done. Thanks again!
@@CaptCalebTV how come no report for the upper laguna madre? But thanks for the video Caleb I appreciate it.
I have a 30ac tidal saltwater lake, inside the railroad, on the west side of the Galveston causeway along the mainland coastline. The property was a sandpit in the 80's, is connected to the intercoastal with 3 large 4ft drain culverts & was abandoned after filling with saltwater. The max depth of the Lake is about 30ft, with a sand bottom, but it's average depth is around 6ft. Because of the 3 drain culverts, all the fish species present in west Galveston bay, with the exception of flounder, are also found in my lake (including reds, speckled trout, drum, croaker, etc). Because of its depth and lack of traffic, the lake tends to warm up quicker & retain warmer temperatures then the bay during the winter. In the past, this has meant an increase in fish during cold weather &, for this reason, this hard of a freeze really concerned me. Thankfully, I haven't seen any dead fish wash up thusfar; although, the past few days I've had exceptionally large groups of gulls, pelicans & cormorants on the lake each morning. They dissipate before nightfall & return again just before sunrise.
I'm definitely instituting a catch & release policy for 2021 to assist in recovery of the local fish populations, & I'll reevaluate for 2022.
From the mouth of arroyo city north to port Mansfield there were massive amounts of all types of game fish. Trophy trout, bull reds, big drum and everything smaller was dead on the flats and in the ICW. Most weren’t floating yet.
As always, great work Capt. Caleb. Honestly, I come away a bit encouraged that the entire coast didn’t get hammered as I feared might be the case with the caveat being what we see after the waters warm up. One part of the coast I’ve heard little about is San Antonio Bay to Carlos. Can you try to get an update from there next week?
I’ll see what I can do. I’m not sure if I have any connections there.
Hello from SE Florida. Good luck guys. Mother nature will prevail. Originally from the Clear Lake area. 30 years ago. Tight lines my Texas friends!
Thank you so much for this survey, Caleb. You can tell that Scott is just gutpunched by what he has seen. Even though upper coast seems to have fared better for now, I fish mansfield and it just saddens me. This year, I plan on being even more conservation minded than usual.
Yes sir. Some areas were a definite gut punch.
Awesome report guys and thank you Caleb for putting this together.
Thanks for the update. I heard about this yesterday.
Thanks for the info and video. Thanks for all your videos and all the info you provide for us to learn. Keep it up.
Caleb- you should get an award for taking the initiative and time to get all these professionals with their breadth of knowledge on one show.
How informative, educational and cool would it be to have a monthly show like this or a monthly Bite Me podcast with all these guides?
Great video. Appreciate the info and contribution from others. Will be looking for the updates!
Thanks for the updates!
Captain Caleb wow I'm from South Florida currently living in West Central Florida been snook fishing my whole life was completely unaware I have never heard of snuff being in Texas have no damn idea...... the same goes for the panhandle of Florida I've been over there on vacation on multiple occasions never heard anyone speak of snook if they're smoking Texas they must have passed Florida Panhandle anyway very shocked to hear that is there an actual solid fishery for them over there? And also what do you consider a big snook I don't consider a snack bag until he surpasses 40 in 40 in Plus??? Holler and let me know when you can on these two questions thank you sir
We have quite a few 30-35”. Not sure I’ve heard of many 40s, but we will take what we can get!
Thanks Capt Caleb for getting this report out so quickly! Promising in some areas and not so good in others!
So sad. From all of us who play by the rules. We are all in the same boat now. I won't be fishing until towards the end of March now so as to do my part in relieving fishing pressure. Lived through 3 major fish kills along the Texas coast due to frigid weather. Praying it won't take years to recover.
Excellent coverage, mix of good and bleak news throughout the geography. Thank you for making this video, and the crucial points on prey-base and ecosystem response and recovery, and for several reporters endorsing self-imposed catch and release. And thanks in advance for follow-ups that may reveal further extent of the kill with floaters and more data, either from guide surveys or TPWD Coastal Fisheries assessments. Appreciate all the contributing guides and weathering the chill of boat rides to gather info.
Thank you for doing this! It’s great to hear directly from some of the top guides about what’s happening in their area. As usual, you’ve gone above and beyond.
In Matagorda we have found multiple trout that are 29in plus
When are u going to post about the update at Matagorda
I will keep it up to date, weekly or on my cctv Facebook page
Like others have stated, thank you for organizing and taking the time to get this out. Hate the results, but at least we have the knowledge.
Thank you, great job, went through 83 & 89 , now its time to treat this great resource with respect for next few years!
Damnit boy I feel old now, I was born in 80. Sounds like a good weekend to wax the Tin Man Outlaw. Lots of comments and haven’t read them all so sorry if a repeat. What are your thoughts on tournaments this year? I figure a lot would go the fly route and do photo stringers or do you think there’s a place at all for tournaments this year?
A little early to tell. Redfish live weigh in tournaments usually have a high success rate. Trout, not as high. Then of course the kill tournaments. We will just have to ride this out and see what TPWD says.
Thanks for the update Capt. And thanks to all who helped. Best wishes to everyone and I will also be practicing catch and release as well.
Great job as always Capt, its good to hear to a broad spectrum review of our costal fisheries by bay system/ guide...sure wish it was better news for my beloved POC , and all of our coast...Very good job putting this togther
You guys are awesome! Thanks for the love of our fisheries and information! Appreciate it!
A voice of reason in all this uncertainty. You’re the best man, we need stuff like this
I’m just passing forward what the voices of reason have told me, sir.
@@CaptCalebTV yessir. I looked around West Galveston Bay today for kills and keyed in one some loons and pelicans working a deep hole and found probably 20 dead trout nearby, but none in the upper slot size. Hoping that the surviving fish pass along good genes
What is the normal water temperature this time of year
Thank you for putting this report together. Very informative and convinced me to go catch and release for rest of 2021.
Tell you what, I’m getting sick and tired of going through once in a lifetime catastrophic events. Let’s do what Texans do best and work together for a common goal of helping the next and many generations after that be able to bend a rod.
Thanks for the video, Capt. Let’s pray for a good outcome.
This isn't a once in a lifetime event. We simply have not had one of these since 1989. Unless 31 years is a lifetime. And I think the time before that was 1983. This is potentially bad for the fish, but we way overblow things when we act like these events are once in a lifetime.
Kevin Depew once in a lifetime if you’re only 27 years old now 😉. Just kidding, you’re definitely right. I more or less meant i’m just tired of getting dealt sh*t cards within the past year.
As the recent past showed us you cannot rely on the government or anyone else but you're self so store water and foods seems like the first time you forgot about these things is when it happens again
Luckily speckled trout are super prolific spawners. We see this up in NC every few years. They can and will bounce back in spades.
Looking forward to the follow up video 👍
Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Scott Null has my gratitude for his honest appeal for people to go into a conservation mode for a few years!
What was water temp before the freeze and current temp
It was upper 60s prior. 51-67 now depending on locations.
@@CaptCalebTV and did I hear right it was ax low sd39 to 42 before the warm up started? Thank you I was curious. I’m a Yooper from the upper peninsula of Michigan. I catch a lot if Yankee flak when I get down south.😎 but I get accused of being a Canuck with a great fake ID !!🤣 not kidding I us to spend winters in Florida and Southwest Texas Lajitas. I have a hardcore Canadian accent. I live up nee Lake Superior.
@@jonnyg172 I personally saw 32.7 and there were 3 days a freezing temps after that here in Matagorda.
I am amazed by the extent of the network you have to be able to but this together. Says volumes about the respect you have accumulated. The effect of this weather wont be know for a couple weeks. Keep putting these out. Thank you
Thanks for the update
Great compilation of what you are seeing on the entire Texas coast. Thanks.
Thanks for compiling all of that for us buddy… It’s a hard pill to swallow but we needed to know. I have subscribed and will keep an eye out for more reports from you
your videos are always good, this is GREAT!!!!! THANKS TO ALL YOUR CONNECTIONS, TRUTH SO VALUA BLE THESE DAYS
Thanks for the great video Caleb. Just got around to listening to Bite Me this afternoon and figured the reports wouldn’t be good. Hopefully we fair better overall up here in G Bay Area than the shallows down south but I guess only time will tell. Def have to practice catch and release for a while, but it’s a good idea and mindset in general. Like Capt Chris Bush says, keep what you need and release the rest. Now more so than ever.
More than ever, sir. Chris and I have been on the phone discussing ideas to help spread this message further than we were able, before.
Awesome video capt. This is some good info and will be cool to look back on when our fisheries do bounce back 🙏🏼
I appreciate you putting this video together. I hope everyone who fishes the Texas coast will watch it. I’m not opposed to catch and release only for a couple of years through tpwd. The only issue is we will end up with a redfish issue.
Thank you capt Caleb for this video. Very informative! Sure is a heartbreaker to see all of these fish dying.
I feel the pain of fish kill, Down here in SwFla we have been battling redtide killing fish and all types of marine life the last few years and it is sad to see our beautiful water gone toxic in areas! Also in 2010 we had a strong freeze for us and it killed alot of snook and other fish ,, We were driving about 5 - 6 miles from coast along a canal that eventually goes to the bay and we saw bunch of buzzards at a weir so we pulled over and unfortunately saw 30 - 40 nice snook of all dead and floating in the cold canal !! It sucked and closed seasons followed for a few years , Good news is the populations do bounce back especially with the closed seasons,,, Good luck from the SwFla Gulfcoast
Will be in Rockport in 4 weeks. Not gonna keep anything if we catch. For a while for sure. Thanks for the video
This was such a great report...catch and release all 2021 for me. Again, thank you guys!
Great video man
Great video. Love the idea of the follow up next week! Thanks for stitching these all together.
Thanks for coordinating and putting this together. Hats off to all the Captains reporting on their areas. I have a Men's Ministry in Rockport Fulton called "Kayak Fishers of Men " and I'll make sure to send this out to the men, so we can do our part for Texas Coast Fishing Conservation. God Bless and Be Safe! Tom Hartswick
Thanks for coordinating this report and looking forward to hearing more.
Thank you a ton to all the Captains who contributed to this video and Capt Caleb! It really is tragic and we all have to do our part an #catchandrelease2021
If the bait die, is the bite more aggressive for soft plastics, fish hungrier, or will they leave all together?
We may find out soon. I’ve wondered this, myself.
Thank you to all involved with getting this put together.
Thanks for putting this together much appreciated
Thanks for putting this together. Really looking forward to next week’s episode. Going to be optimistic about it. Hope you and your family made it through alright.
Thanks for everything Capt
Thanks for the post!
Just curious if the tpwd could put in emergency order for catch and release
I’m sure they have the ability. If they will, I don’t know.
Makes me sad but catch and release is what we need to do thanks for the video capt !
I hate to see #1 the dead fish, Texas and this industry going through this. Praying all involved don’t suffer as bad as it looks like you might. God bless you all. Watching to see what happens from here in NC.
Are some of the dead fish still eatable? Isn't the water cold enough to preserve them? A lot of food banks could use the fish. Just interested? Thanks for the report!
I would be skeptical about it, but this is an answer I don’t have.
I know it's a big disaster but it's a good time to take advantage of some of the things that people other places can't get it's like mullet can be froze and sold to other people around the country
Thanks for putting this together.
Thank you for the update!
Thanks Capt for putting this combined effort together. Thanks to all the local guides for the time and effort in making this happens. I truly believe if we do our part as fishermen and be responsible, Mother Nature will take care of the rest. I know personally it’ll be catch and release for a long while. Save some money on ice. Thanks again.
Thanks so much for that report Capt. I'll be 100% catch and release this year.
Really Appreciate this Info. Thanks !!!!!!
Thank you guys so much for spreading informative info and preaching the conservation message.
Thank you for this report. I have seen so many fish and unfortunately sea turtles pass on due to this freeze.
Let's hope a bunch of fish don't float up in Texas, next week. We had a minor freeze in Florida a dozen years ago, and I took the boat out and saw about 200 big, dead snook laying on the bottom, they hadn't floated yet. This was at Yankeetown, in the river there.
Let’s hope.
Thank you for doing this Caleb we are all sitting on the edge of our seats waiting to see how it comes out. I did get some good news in palacios/west matagorda capt arron walum showed some video of trout and redfish moving up shallow to soak up that mid day sun.
Also we are 100 percent on board with the catch and release at my house as well!
Thanks for doing this can’t wait for next week report hopefully it’s good news on theses fish
Thanks for the updates. Terrible to see and hope for the best in all bay systems.
Thanks for covering this Caleb, hopefully the TPWD or a Univ. biologist will take you up on your offer to speak on your channel
It's the same all the way through trinity Bay. Thanks for the info.
This is a crazy video. I fish a ton in port O'Connor, Texas, and I have seen the Trout on the banks. It is really sad to see, but there is enough food for gators, turtles, crabs, etc. for a long time
Yea I was at port isable in Texas I live south 40 min away from south padre I saw a lot of bait fish on the bank
I thought fish go to deeper waters....
They don’t all have the time or deeper water, for that matter. Deepest spot in east Matagorda is maybeeeee 6’
@@CaptCalebTV 😯
Catch and release for several years. And we just have to pray for a speedy recovery
Solid work Capt many thanks.
Sorry to see all this situations i always go on vacation to fishing and enjoy the beautiful wheather i hope and pray everything goes back to normal soon finishing and realize its the best option right now my beautiful people best wishes from Connecticut
Thank you for the up-date we are watching the coats out there and god-bless every-one keep-up the great work yawl do and thanks' again..
Holy Moly 😯 thank you for the video .
I wonder how many fish are dead that we don’t see. Not all of the fish die and float to the top and end up on the shore. A lot of them die and end up on the bottom. Cheers from Arroyo City!
When the water warms up and the fish bloat and float, we should get a better idea.
U guys r the hero's
I am not a guide but I have been in three freeze that killed fish the one that I remember the most is in Corpus Christi was Oso Bay freeze up
34000 views 😲😲
Wow 🥺 good job on the video
Guy works his a$$ off right after no power for a week and some loser drops a dislike... 😂. Get a life! Thanks for the update, cap!
Doesn’t bother me a bit, bud. Thanks for the support!
People dying in Texas and y’all worried about stinking ass fish tf wrong with y’all people 😒
Mother Nature is resilient, now it is our job to learn and help her recover. We need to learn to be PROACTIVE, not REACTIVE. Let’s all do our part from now on, not just AFTER fish kills but all the time!
I fish mainly Aransas, rockport, corpus , seadrift areas . I'm hoping everyone does there part from kayakers to bank fisherman and too the guides to practice catch and release this year and give our game fish a fighting chance to bounce back just opinion guys what are yalls thoughts! we don't know whats on the bottom yet crossing fingers!!! SEMPER FI
Thanks
Thank you. I needed this. I fish CCT area.
83 was bad. I was 11 and will never forget them using loaders to clean the beaches.
Going catch and release 100%. I'll fill my freezers with freshwater fish.
Got my popcorn and tissues ready! Hoping for the best... 🤞🏻
Same bro...
Hey everybody just hang on serious regulations coming for y'all
Doubt it.
Great video, thank you!
Great job coordinating this and getting it out so soon 👍
It was a nail biter! Everyone having to wait for power really made it stressful. Big thanks to all involved!
