I have plenty of batteries, flashlights, headlamps etc, also for hurricane season. I cut down one of the large branches on one of my trees for firewood. So don’t talk to me about personal responsibility. I hope the families of those people that have died from hypothermia sue ERCOT for everything they’ve got.
The US is also. Texas is the only state on a completely separate grid. They produce most of our energy & they want all their industries to be as unregulated as possible, so they essentially seceded, in terms of power production. They didn’t winterize their thermal or their renewable systems, with the excuse that “It rarely gets this cold for more than a day or two in TX”🙄
And it's why countries with universal healthcare are also better at handling a vaccine rollout. The United States seems obsessed with the past, instead of focused on the future
@Flat Sign What is the solution then? What do you recommend that can/should be done to prevent a repeat of this winter in the coming years. Here in Permian Basin, I was out Sun night till this morning(Tues). Even phone data was effected. Least I had 4WD, lol.

Renewable isn’t the problem with Texas, it’s their brains. Saving money at the cost of Her citizens, and this is what you get, failure. Now, the slim Jim eating governor, wants to blame Ercot... because he’s not allowed to criticize the CEOs of the power plants, or else he won’t get re-elected .... meaning he’ll have to work harder at stealing money while doing the least possible.
So basically when you insist on doing things your way, instead of compromising and working as a team, you will be alone when your in the most need of help. Practically a Grimm tale.
I would rather do things my way, deal with the complications for the added experience, and live authentically, than live your prescribed life with all the sheeple. Laugh all you want. We don't have to, "compromise" with communists. The, "team", is an evil empire.
Some of the lies are unbelievable but their audience believe them. How can AOC who got elected when Trump was in office, went into a Republican led state and force them to all use the Green New Deal without anyone knowing and talking about it, not even big mouth Trump.
But the windmills are to be blamed because of the CAA forcing Texas to subsidize it. Subsidized credits should have been used to expand power plants and the keystone Democrats are just so bad at infrastructure
They use windmills for power in Russia, Norway, Denmark, ANTARCTICA, Etc. And Denmark's windmills are in the ocean, in the Nordics. At winter they get really cold. As in frozen. Yet they all work.
There are wind turbines in other states in the US that work just fine in the winter and across the Northern border in Canada as well. This is just a moronic republican talking point designed to smear political opponents and shift the blame away from the republicans who have been in charge for the last couple of decades. I do believe they were told to winterize their gear during the last big storm and failed to do so.
I live in Iowa, which has more wind power than any other state. It gets cold here every year and we have zero problems with the wind turbines, but then we paid the little bit of extra $$ to outfit them to work in subzero temps.
Because they're made to withstand freezing conditions? This is a once in a lifetime snowstorm that we will probably never see again in our lifetimes. Who is to blame for yearly blackouts in California with predictable weather?
The ones who have the power to change Texas are the ones less likely to be fazed by this tragic freeze. Because they would rather own the libs and strike out on their own than do the right thing.
@Baka Matai I don't think you understand the differences between the two situations. In CA there are rolling blackouts but they are by design and it doesn't result in a total system failure. In Texas, this was an unplanned power outage and they are not in control. California supports climate change mitigation efforts, while Texas pretends that climate change doesn't exist. Anti-science politicians are not leaders. American needs to be globally competitive and in order to do that we need to invest in multiple forms of energy and better prepare for disasters (including pandemics) and climate change. That would be very difficult to do with increased deregulation and limited government.
I wonder how Joe Rogan and Ben Shapiro feel about California and all its regulations after they decided to move to regulation-free Texas. Facts don't care about feelings.
I was born and raised in Texas and this is their motto...”You can’t tell me what to do.” But a kindly word from a transplanted Californian is this: In this modern world, being ‘under-regulated’ and bull-headed is ill-advised.

@@johnlangevin708 It won't be fixed for a decade or two. You have to keep in mind Texas's voting laws forbid mail in ballots for anyone who is under 65, and has a disability. Why do I say two decades? Because back in the 50s, 60s and 70s Civics was not considered a main focus of education. This is roughly the age range of the Boomer generation going to school. I'm not a fan of over regulation, but this is the poster child for why we need a reasonable degree of regulation. With too little, you wind up with the corporate equivalency of slum lords.
California has had wide spread outages for several years running. Regulation isn't going to magically make extreme events not happen. How does it makes sense to castigate a system that works fine 99.999% of the time, because it failed that one time there was a black swan?

In this modern world, we are no longer self-sufficient and must rely on those around us including government. Whether not enough or too much, regulation leads to wealth for some and suffering for others. There is some reasonable middle ground. Power grid isolation and lack of winterizing are being blamed for the suffering this time. This is a rare event, perhaps emergency plans that actually work for different disasters (fire, wind, water, earthquake) are a better solution. Does any reasonable person think Texans are going to pay 10% or more to winterize their houses for a centennial event that turns out to be a hurricane next time?
@@jessedowning3349 Since the giant Tubbs fire in October, 2017, virtually all of California's power outages have been in Summer, during high wind conditions. The Tubbs fire burned 8,000 structures and killed ~22 people (including a friend's father). The 'Paradise fire burned something like 14,000 structures and killed over 80. California's weak link is not the power generation, but its distribution. During high wind events, trees and branches land on power lines and power lines sometimes start arcing. As a result of the major fires that the distribution grid started, lawsuits bankrupted the main power company and that company (PG&E) now preemptively shuts down power in the area where the wind becomes too much of a threat.

They can't magically cut power to everything non essential. The feeders that can be quickly controlled by utilities supply a mixture of loads, and tripping distribution feeders in metro areas like you suggest is even more dangerous than in residential only areas because of the greater risk of people getting trapped in elevators, etc. There also tends to be more critical infrastructure on those circuits. bad byproduct is what you describe, but it takes time to manually trip things like you seem to describe.

Russia has wind turbines too and Russia is a LOT more colder in America. Their wind turbines had no problems. I don't get why Texas blame wind turbines when it's only 18% of their electricity source in the first place. They should blame coal and natural gas since it's 80% source of their energy.
Russia has colder places but the wind turbines are placed in much warmer palces in that vast country. They do not use them in Syberia. "Today in Russia there are 190 MW of wind farms in operation, which is less than 1 percent of the total energy balance of Russia, but this year more than 400 MW is under construction; we plan to commission from 200 to 700 MW annually, and 3,380 MW of wind farms will be built by 2024."

Well you wouldn’t be in this situation of the Republicans believed in helping people. Basically for all the grids there should be a private public partnership where they both run the grid. In Texas they don’t believe in helping people so they let the private sector run everything so winter proofing all their stuff turned out to be to much money they just didn’t do it.

Those are probably the folks from the north where this weather is normal. I'm from Michigan, we know how to drive in those conditions, at least most of us do.
I have a friend in Houston. Having worked for 12 years in a coal fired power plant, the first thing I told him was don't worry, your utilities will buy power off the grid to whomever they're connected with. When he told me they were independent, I said well, you're screwed then. Even if Texas has peaker and heating units, it wouldn't put much of a dent in what is needed. I had no idea Texas was independent of the national grid. Huge mistake.
Please listen. Everything Jesus Christ preached about in the Bible is coming to pass. He said that because of the increase of wickedness, the love of many will grow cold. We have been seeing this over the past year with the Antifa riots. He said there would be wars and rumors of wars. (There are rumors of war with China and Iran lately) He said that in the last days people would be persecuted and arrested for their faith in Jesus Christ. Just recently a Pastor in Toronto was arrested for holding Church services in violation of covid restrictions. The givernment agreed to release him on the condition he NO LONGER PREACH THE GOSPEL. Obviously je refuses to comply. covid is a lie to silence and attack the Church. In California is it ILLEGAL to sing in Church! In China, Christians are also arrested for their Faith by the Chinese Communist Party. Churches are raided, images of Jesus replaced with communist propaganda. A woman was murdered by a man bulldozing her Church and buried alive! covid is a great lie was fabricated by the governments of the world to get Donald Trump out of office, control the masses and reshape society. Weathly CEOs like Bill Gates have been buying up farmland across the globe whilst telling the rest of us peasants to eat artifical meat. Meanwhile in the UK, BUGS have been approved for sale in grocery stores! We are nearing Christ's return. PLEASE accept JESUS CHRIST as your LORD AND SAVIOR NOW! Jesus Christ was born to a virgin named Mary. He was concieved not of a man's seed, but by God's Spirit, which overshadowed Mary. Thus he was called the Son of God. Jesus was 30 years old when he began His Ministry. He preached about the Kingdom of God, healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, cleansed those with leprosy, raised the dead and cast out demons. He often refuted the jewish scholars of His time and humiliated them in front of the people. Becuase of this, they wanted to put Him to death. After giving one of Jesus Disciples, a man named Judas, 30 pieces of silver, Judas handed Jesus over to them. However, Jesus knew all that was going to happen. He knew that by shedding His own blood as an act of atonement to God, that OUR SINS WOULD BE WIPED CLEAN! Jesus was flogged, given a crown of thorns, spat on, beaten, and forced to carry His cross whicj he was nailed to. He was beaten so horrifically that He barely resembled a man. As He died, He said 'Father, forgive them, they don't know what they are doing.' Jesus died on the cross, but ROSE FROM THE DEAD three days later! After appearing to His Disciples over a period of forty days, He was taken up into Heaven. Two men in White appeared to His Disciples, saying that Jesus will one day return in the same way He was taken up into Heaven. Before Jesus death our sins stood before us and condemned us when we died. But now that Jesus offered himself as an act of atonement, OUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN WHEN WE DIE AND THE GATES OF HEAVEN ARE OPENED TO US! THERE IS NO WAY TO HEAVEN EXCEPT BY JESUS CHRIST! IF YOU ACCEPT HIM AS LORD AND SAVIOR, YOUR NAME WILL BE WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE AND YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER!

This is why in literally every functional country in the world critical infrastructures and industries are heavily regulates or even state-owned.

this is why the GOP doesn't need to run anything. this is what deregulations brings.
Republicans are only good for declaring war and fighting in wars (which are usually just for them to line their pockets).

There needs to be a review of how housing is being constructed. A plan for passive design of homes needs to be introduced. Not only will homes be warmer purely by design, but will have a far lower carbon footprint and will be much cheaper to heat and run. Fuel poverty will also be lowered.
That won't go well with deregulation-minded rightwing nutjobs in places like Texas. They hate these things.
The best insult is when you say even Arizona did it right
Texans: We're gonna secede from the Union!
Mother Nature: You sure you wanna do that?
Well you wouldn’t be in this situation of the Republicans believed in helping people. Basically for all the grids there should be a private public partnership where they both run the grid. In Texas they don’t believe in helping people so they let the private sector run everything so winter proofing all their stuff turned out to be to much money they just didn’t do it.

Totally Ted Cruz fault!

Rumor has it he's in Mexico enjoying the Sun and margaritas
A lesson for Texas to learn.
They won't learn it. Their governor is already attacking green energy (which only makes up a minority of their energy grid) and the GOP are gonna probably find some way to use this to justify more deregulation as the answer... while also asking for federal bailouts and attacking blue state welfare cities.
As long as the Republican base remains as cold as the artic air outside my window, Texas isn't changing.
This is why Gerrymandering is so bad. The Republican party in Texas doesn't care because they know they don't have to try as hard to win. They have no reason to change their outlook.
Wind turbines in frigid countries work just fine but somehow the ones in Texas failed. Incompetence across the board. Climate change is real and it’ll affect you when you least expect it. I hope Texas Republicans have learned something but I won’t hold my breath.

Well said
this is literally right infront of our eyes on live television, what other evidence do you need to realize how important climate change is and actually governing the state to combat issues
Some people here in America just lose it when there is not internet can you imagine when there is no electricity, running water or gas. It has happened before like the north east blackout it was a complete mess, for 7 hours in NYC we run like chickens with no head. Today it’s 02/18/21 Texas is in a halt, due to the freezing weather conditions affecting all across the Country, water pipes froze and burst, no electricity no water,no gas. It just show us, we are not near prepare to face the rapid climate changes that is occurring before our eyes. But amazingly people who live in the most remote places on earth will carry on with their day without noticing we are struggling. We need to learn how to be resourceful and adapt other wise we will be legend. This has nothing to do with your political view or faith beliefs. This is reality, in only 150 years we have cause an irreparable damage to this world we live in and there is no going back. We have seen more sudden changes in the summer hotter than ever and in the winter literally freezing and more snowing we have ever seen. On top of that we’re re still trying to overcome COVID-19 but without people all collectively actually helping out to stop the spread, millions of us will just won’t make it. The main problem today is misinformation, there’s a huge manipulation of facts by influence figures in all social stages but mostly media outlets control by the richest elites do and say whatever they feel more convenient, therefore lies spread faster than truth and lots of people working class believe this things. I just hope we can take a moment and actually reflect on what’s going on around us.
Good questions for the CEO's of all the privately owned energy companies which had 10 years to upgrade their equipment but didn't. Instead the money flowed into their pockets and not into upgrades on the equipment. WTF!
And Texans wonder why the rest of country cringes at them.
Deregulation of energy companies? I wonder who thought that would be a good idea for consumers?
Aside from the military, the U.S. seems to be playing catch-up on almost every aspect of life. Roads, bridges, factories, housing, schools, hospitals, education, inner city crime, crime in general, etc. We couldn’t even produce lousy hand sanitizers, paper towels, or toilet paper!
Where's Ted Cruz in all of this, Texas' Senator? He's on vacation in Can Cun, Mexico!
Keep spreading the word
ted cruz is a legislator, he has nothing to do with producing electricity. if i lived in texas, i would have travelled to a warmer place for a week or two. ercot is the one to be blamed.
6:27 Oh, the CIA won't allow that. The FEDS need more control over Texas food and energy.
That's GOP REPUBLICANTS Government Run STATES for YOU!!!
No, Tucker Carlson said that someone snuck in all the wind energy behind the Republican legislature's back and installed it and made them use it. I guess 10 years ago AOC (when she was 21) parachuted in and secretly put in all those windmills and forced ERCOT to use them without letting the Texas Republican politicians know until it was too late. Those ineffectual liberals are really powerful.
We haven’t had power since Sunday night. Peoples pipes are burst and their freezing with their children in their homes...can’t even take showers. My mother in on oxygen after getting over COVID and our communities are at a breaking point. We were very unprepared for this.
😔
So I never knew that they were on their own grid and that they did it simply so that they wouldn't have to follow federal regulations well and look at what it got you.
Because unlike you I had no reason to leave Manhattan and in a cold storm like this especially during Sandy where we had no power for 8 days we still have the stove and we had hot water why because we follow federal regulations and I've been in -30 so what all of you are going through I don't care. I'm showing the same contempt you've shown for us.
If you became your own grid simply not to follow Federal regulations then I very much doubt you have the authority to say what should be done now.
People survive in Alaska at -20 degrees.
Hang in there Texans praying for this mess to go away
The GOP suggests heating your house with a charcoal grill. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps!
And nobody has thought of carbon monoxide poisoning?
People: Do Not Do This. You will die from carbon monoxide poisoning. You'd be surprised how many people do not understand this. My brother-in-law was killed this way when his best friend brought a hibachi into an RV with a broken door that was leaking cold night air. As he lay in the upper bunk, he died in his sleep.
Please folks...I was trying to be funny here....But I did actually see news reports showing people buying bags of charcoal. Maybe they were just going to barbeque.
Don’t insult Texas with federal help. That’s sounds like socialism.

The Red Cross bills for their help, so technically it's not help. Most service families don't donate to the Red Cross after getting billed for blood a family member got from Red Cross.
Agreeing with the other comments. Please find other sources of assistance when possible.
At least it would have been HONORABLE, RESPECTable, and the Decent thing to do...especially since it was his style of politics that helped put the poor people of Texas there in the first place. Besides that, it's what's called LEADERSHIP...or in Teddy Cruz's case, LACK of (honest) Leadership OKA LeaderSHTTT.
Horrible leadership you get horrible results
This is what deregulation looks like.
You're right
And incompetent Democrat governors looks like the forest fires of California for over 5 months!!!!

Pro Tip: Taxes & Regulations are important
Hey Texas how are you liking your stand-alone power grid and your independence from the federal government?!? No big bad Gov interference for you brilliant people!
Abbott asked the EPA to relax the NOx rules so they could run the older gas turbines at full capacity. The EPA basically said screw you.
It cost around $50 to make a megawatt of power. The EPA said if the old gas turbines were turned on, the EPA would fine them $1,500 per megawatt hour.
I use to respect the fact that Texas had it's own grid, away from 'Con Ed' & 'Duke'..but this is a problem...

I know a lot of people life are affected by what is going on with the power out be strong I am praying for you ALL 🙏💗
Please listen. Everything Jesus Christ preached about in the Bible is coming to pass. He said that because of the increase of wickedness, the love of many will grow cold. We have been seeing this over the past year with the Antifa riots.
He said there would be wars and rumors of wars. (There are rumors of war with China and Iran lately)
He said that in the last days people would be persecuted and arrested for their faith in Jesus Christ.
Candian Prime Minister Justin Treadau admitted on camera that we need to use covid to rethink society.
As He died, He said 'Father, forgive them, they don't know what they are doing.'
Jesus died on the cross, but ROSE FROM THE DEAD three days later!
The events from 2020 to now are too convenient for those with agendas to push. Their trying to tie the pandemic and these weather events to global warming so they can push the green new deal and more government involvement.
