I’d normally just go for anything but a Acer, whilst there are alot of good reviews, I know for a fact that they don’t always last that long. Everything else about it is great though. Would recommend a Asus or Dell if you’re looking for something that lasts a while.
The horrible screen on the Asus is the deal breaker. I've heard that the followup model 15 F513 (as opposed to the F512) has an IPS screen.... but it's still not that great. You should do a review on the vivobook 15 F513 just so we can compare the newer screen. Great review.
Good comparison review. The Asus is a nice unit in many respects but having to look at a screen that requires adjusting one's body angles to see it, is a deal breaker. I love my Aspire 5's because I do not get any eye fatigue from them. Regarding the audio of the Aspire 5 units, I have noticed when using a laptop stand the sound markedly improves with the additional space beneath the unit. The Vivobook has a nice hinge design that helps to augment the audio. I personally always link my laptops to BT speakers, usually a JBL Link View or Insignia portable speaker with BT and the Google assistant. Sounds fabulous. I also use a BT mouse on my laptops. Don't like using a trackpad, bad shoulders. The bottom line for me is the upgradeability of the Aspire 5. It is one of the last laptops where the user can really load it up with RAM and storage. I upgraded the Aspire 5's to 512 GB Intel NVME's also. 16 gigs of RAM and 1 terabyte drives, a Crucial and a Samsung unit in either one. I have 2 of these machines and one is dedicated to Ubuntu 20.04. Works perfectly. I find the Aspire 5 to be a pretty exciting unit to dabble with and to do productive work. The Asus unit as it stands in the review, would leave me feeling like stuff is missing and where the full potential of a laptop in this price range is already pretty limited, the Aspire 5 breaks out of that mold. It is so expandable. It really is the better deal.

@@jakescake7636 true but it's a dent, aesthetics aren't really of my concern. I currently use a Lenovo x230 that has cracks from all sorts conditions I have put it through and I paid $50 for it. It still gets a week long battery life and I can do any school work I need.

Thanks again. I went out and bought the Asus Vivobook this morning on sale at Office Depot for $350. Has 256 SSD drive instead of 128, otherwise identical to your tester model. An easy choice over the Aspire, especially since audio is key for me. As far as the screen , software is available to calibrate screens for improved color accuracy. I don't disagree that the Aspire has the better display tech, but I am coming from an HP G2 250 from 2013 model year( with some updated tweaks). And I don't adjust my screen while I watch; no testing for off angle weaknesses. I watch mine dead on straight. Great and fun review BTW. Keep up the good work!!!!!

I also added an Acer Swift 3 with an evo I7 chipset, DTS sound superior display and battery life as well to my laptops- easier to travel with a 14 inch laptop. My main complaint with the Asus Vivobook is a fairly limited battery only time. MAybe 2-3 hours max. Other than that, for $350 it was a total steal.

I just purchased an Asus vivobook 15 but I am showing it only has 4 gb of ram and it is brand new (not refurbished). I tried to put a new 8gb ram into it but upon watching a different video, didn't think there was a place to put my memory ( I have the kind that connects on the side , not at the end) and I couldn't get the back off anyways. Francis Njike it probably depends on your location. Where I live it’s impossible to find IPS Acer 5 with Ryzen cpu, but intel version with IPS is available. For ASUS both AMD and Intel are available with IPS.

Are you sure about the lack of upgrades in the Vivobook? There is a version of the Vivobook F512 on Amazon that includes a 128GB SSD + 1TB Hard drive.

i think the 2021 version of the aspire 5 now has a usb c so the only perk of the vivobook is the microsd now

The Ryzen 3350u version is much cheaper than the 3200u. You get much more performance for $80 cheaper
