  • In this Video, Peter will be shooting with LED lights, he's only ever done shoots before with smaller LED lights and normally uses HMI lighting when not using flash or daylight. The awesome people from iFootage Lighting supplied the The Anglerfish LED lights and accessories, please see the link below.

I love how the "Peter doesn't do reviews" model. You can't outright pay him off (allegedly), he won't go through a script or technical checklist, but if you send him something he will play with it and just talk while he does. It's candid, entertaining, and generally far more useful in evaluating a piece of kit for regular use than any traditional review.

Peter, please do not tell Becca but she surpasses all of the amazing models that you shoot on this channel. She of course talks to us on every one of your episodes and thus we take her to be the girl next door with her disarming candor and openness. BUT - the moment she starts to pose, her eyes come alive with an amazing capture and downright beauty. I will not describe any more of her physical features because they all are top notch and I don't want to leave the safety zone of the eyes. Shhh...

Really impressed with these LED lights, and I have to say the Balloon Filter was by far the most impressive thing about this light set up for me. I've been looking for a compact, affordable and yet effective lighting set that is easily tunable and adjustable. I have only used LED's in broadcasting and like the solid 5600K light they give off but have yet to have a go with these smaller studio lamps, so thanks for letting us see how they shake down for you. Bec you look stunning in that wee sparkly pixie dress in a goth style Wednesday Addams meets Tinkerbell. You looked like you were having fun too, after the serious modelling bits, of course. Thanks again for letting us watch a session with Bec while you try out this lamp, you do us a great service by doing these and it's appreciated! - Dave

Nice technique. Way different from the classic studio photography classes with umbrella lights with a key and a fill light placements. It has been years since I have done studio portrait photography. My day job pays much better. For some soft box photography, I have found some drop ceiling LED panels have very good CRI and provide nice soft box effects. I use those, not with models, but for technical product photography, such as used in product publications.

One question - what was the wattage of the LED you were using (I have a few 200W units- once you go above that power things get a lot more expensive right now...)

I noticed you are using ISO 800 which is normal for any of the constant light setups since it is hard to get the higher absolute powers of flash. Do you find that you have noise starting to creep in to image at that ISO on the camera you are using now? That would happen on a older Canon 5D Mark II for example.
It is also hard to see the front of the bubble modifier. Is it flat or more rounded like a China ball? The effect looks like a big China ball, which is cool.

I have mixed feelings and experiences using led lights. Seems like you always have to jack up the iso to get enough shutter speed to ensure some degree of sharpness. The more you jack the iso , the lesser your dynamic range. I think they work well if you want to use them outside at night to help illuminate a scene . The effective range is limited. However they do work well if you want to immulate the old classic Hollywood B&W hot lights glamour look. Since they don't get as hot you can make your own barn doors out of just about anything.

Many thanks for this new backstage session.
@Bec: Many thanks for posing in this session. I am sorry if the lights were too bright for your eyes, but with them I have just found today a new component that I think I haven’t seen before; you will read it in the comments to Peter. I am aware this session is not about posing, but please let me say my preferred parts are: a) when you open your arms, 2:46-2:46, it looks like you are going to fly like Tinker Bell; b) when you are approaching the camera, 4:41-4:44.
@Peter: Many thanks for sharing these multiple combinations of lights, and how to reduce the brightness to make it more bearable for the Model. The one I like the most is when the light comes from below because usually light comes from top or front. But what has brought my attention the most is how the contrast has created a kind of special dark line, in the Model’s contour, in the cover photography of this video for example; and after making a quick comparison with other photographs made and shared by you, I think it is not common to see it. I am aware this session is not about dresses but please let me say that these dark lines, which I have just mentioned, are reinforced by the linear based design of the dress that the Model is wearing.
