Just bought a few Amarans, but I’ve had a flexible LED light panel since around 2017, a company that was affordable but now non existent (VersaTile), and to your point it’s great for booming in to get very close, soft light, and I was able to take it on international jobs since it was so small.
Youre dead right when you talk aboit small spaces. British homes are generally tiny, so being able to light inside a semi-detached or terraced without knocking over the telly or pottery cat is phenomenal. Nice video again Sam
The softbox may not make it much softer, but when lighting certain subjects, you’ll reduce your likelihood of having multiple shadows from the multiple LEDs when you use panel lights.
Mate you're content is absolutely unreal - can't believe you only have 47k subs. The info and value you provide is genuinely top class! You'll be at 10x that soon I'm sure.

Not just at home, I can see it being used on location for my client shoots. Very practical and portable, wish it was a bit cheaper 😊.But surely would go for it if it replaces huge soft boxes that I have to take for professional shoots . Great video . Love it . Spot on ! Thanks
First off these things were really designed for portability more than at home use. Secondly any type of bounce material, even a collapsible white card that folds up, add any light source, and it’s almost as portable. And way cheaper.
We have several light mats; one of the great things about them is that you don't need heavy C-stands. Lightweight light stands are perfectly adequate. Not only is the instrument small and takes up a small space in your kit but the overall weight of your kit is much lighter too.
I’ve had a led light mat since day one! I knew if I kept it long enough it would become cool 😂 I love it because I have a tiny space and I love that they never give off any heat!
Right, Sam! Again the bearer of helpful news! My filming space is a mite scarce as well, and to subtract softbox dome will be welcome thing. I’m utterly sold. Thanks monstrously much. 🇺🇸💛🇬🇧
Looks great. There is one thing that would make it absolutely amazing: having the possibility to deactivate some LEDs individually, thus creating a shape or a strip. This would turn a square light into a strip light.
I love these lights nice, very easy to setup on location to where ever you shoot, weather it's some one else home or what ever having enough room is not a problem. I love it worth the money,,
The thing is, with this you are limited with only diffused light. Which is great for a lot of use, but with a point source of light you can also shoot with more focuses beam if you need and go wide with a diffuser. On big advantage it has, is if you want to film in a tight space .
I would build a funnel out of very light sheet metal or aluminium foil and place it in front of the LED mat. The metal inside reflects the light and the smaller outlet at the end of the funnel acts as a beam.
If anyone loves this idea but can't afford the £600 right now I can't recommend the Falconeyes RX-18TD enough! They're £300 (even at 100W they're blindingly bright in most situations) and even come with a lantern softbox attachment too. They're 18 inches across instead of the 24 inches this looks to be so I'm not saying there aren't merits to going up to the bigger Godox one, just amazing products really. I got my second one used for £170!
I've been using the ones from Falcon Eyes for years. Love this format! Saw these at Cinegear LA. The ballasts are a bit big and noisy for me. I'll stick to the Falcon Eyes ones for now.
Same here - I also don't see how this is new at all. It's being hyped up like it's some kind of innovation, yet it was the first bigger video light I bought nearly 10 years ago now…
Hi. You can put the box on the floor or on the stand but the light itself reduces space it takes up where a softbox would be. Imagine the control box behind the light.
@@SamHolland Yeah I am sure the light itself is great. I've also been very happy with my Godox lights so far. But recently I started doing a lot of interviews across Europe and packing and carrying the weight of the lights is the most annoying part. Wish there was something like the size of the Zhiyun G200 but without the controller box 😔 Maybe we'll have to wait a couple of more years for technology to catch up
Very innovative design and price point from Godox. My last Godox product broke in less than 2 years and there’s no where to get it repaired that I’m away of in the US.
Yeah, I wouldn’t expect any kind of warranty service from godox at their prices. For that I would purchase from LiteGear because I know part of the price would include additional service and repair capabilities.
For attaching it with Velcro, you can get Gaffer Tape compatible with Velcro. If it's not already on there, put semi-permanent velcro on the light, but use the gaff tape on your wall. You can attach/detach the light as needed, then when the project is finished just peel the gaff tape off your wall and you're done... as long as you bought the good (i.e. expensive) tape that peels off clean.
This looks insanely good mate! I'm working in a tiny corner in a box room/dressing room and no where for a soft box to go, but this looks like a solution!
Recently got one and really impressed with it, my biggest complaint is that they didn't include a fixing device to easily attach the power box to a light/c stand as they're supposedly sold separately but can't actually find one online. Also wondering if you have got the lantern attachment? Considering purchasing it but can't find reviews on it.
How loud is that controller's fan, and what's that dmx receiver thing that plugs into it that looks like a key, what does it do & why do I need it, I just want to light up my tiny studio.
Hi. Sure. If you have the light set up in the right way. Just make sure you have minimal shadows on the green screen and you'll be golden! 😃🎥 Good luck.
I've been using flex lights for about 5 years now and I was kind of happy to see Godox enter the game due to me coming from Westcott and now currently to Falcon eyes due to possibly a shift in price and perhaps resolve some of the issues I have always had ioth these types of lights. If you don't know and rarely are ever told in these product showcase video's is these are not for travel like you would think. When I first saw these and since I am on site everywhere always flying I was stoked that I could pack these (wrap them up) and save tons of space and weight. No, that's the case. In fact they took up more room and or weighted twice that of a normal light its side. Thats because of the GIANT power brick they come with. Some even come with two of them. Now, where these do shine and like he pointed out is putting them in places (as long as you get an extension cable for power) you couldn't or would bot want traditional lights. especially over head due to safety. Thats where these are great. If they fall, their not going to kill anyone. Seems the Godox are more pricey then most with the exception of Westcott. I will say my Westcott that are now 5.5 years old and my Falcon eyes that are about the same are rock solid still. hopefully Godox is the same. Godox is starting to go the way of Apature in both quality\price and reputation it seems. Sucks for the wallet but good for the brand.
I've used the LED light strips finding them excellent for lighting car interiors. These Light mats would be perfect for small spaces on location such as bathrooms, or rooms with low ceilings. Velcro a mat to the wall, cover with sheer curtains or opened venetian blinds, adjust the aperture to blow out the light, and it could mimic a window. I'm curious if the color temperature and intensity can be adjusted. I will be buying a few of these! Thanks for the video!
I've been wanting something like this, or even thinner, because my photo studio has low ceilings, and I have to perform magic to get the light I want from above. They should also, (Godox, Paul C Buff, etc.) create the same for flashes. I shoot editorials also and love to have my softbox over the models head sometimes for nice overhead soft light, but the softboxes take up so much space I have to ask the model to sit or squat which sucks.
@@shadowshapers because flash have their purpose in the studio and in outdoor shoots, esp when shooting sports and high fashion, or anything that requires a high shutter speed that way I can shoot with the lowest iso and still get sharp images

I think you're missing the point of my initial comment@@shadowshapers
I haven't had time to say goodbye to the softbox..... ;) can you answer what to do about filling shadows in the middle of a sunny day? For a group of three or four people? Full height or at least hard shadows on faces. The Godox AD400 Pro with the native softbox was quite good at this task. And it does not glare in the eyes with continuous light at the brightness level of the sun. Otherwise my models would just close their eyes or squint. I'm talking about how to make a photograph ... In spite of loud claims, there is a better solution for every task on the market. Obviously, for video shooting, a compact constant light source is a better solution than a single powerful lamp with a deep diffuser. When describing your finding, please describe also the conditions of its application, advantages and disadvantages so it will be quite good. All the best!
Practical, but at one third of the cost, and with FOUR times the output of the light panel, the Amaran COB 60x S Bi-Color seems like a much better deal.
How are you measuring output? Bare-bulb Lux at 1m? Put the Amaran in a 2’x2’ softbox, and compare the readings then. This is a 200W light, it’s not outputting a quarter of the intensity of a 60W light. A COB light has the flexibility of being used as a hard light, or modified in multiples ways to be different qualities of soft light. But the advantages of a panel are clearly explained in the video. If none of those apply to you (saves space, is lightweight, can be mounted anywhere, is weather resistant), then sure, the COB might be better for you. The real comparable light offered by Amaran is the F22X, which is the same price as this one by Godox.
@@colinjudge1261 Just looking at the output specs: the Amaran is 33,300 Lux @ 3.3'. The Godox is 8300 Lux at 3.3'. Unless these specs are completely misleading, that is slightly more than 4x the output at 1m. Plus, no multiple shadows. Of course the pluses of the Godox are evident but, as far as output, if you're going to spend $600US, you could get three of the Amaran COB 60x S Bi-Color, or even get two of the 200w Amaran COB 200x S Bi-Color (45,400 Lux @ 3.3') for a little more than the Godox 200w light panel.
@@SamHolland Considering I shoot in a 10x8 feet room, compact but large source lighting is so clutch... and it's lightweight! Might need to consider picking one of these up haha
Nice... but I invested all I needed to invest as far as light already .... including the aputure 1200d ... wish I have seen this pefore... Another issue.... you can make a hard light into soft ... but not the oposite.... so I'd rather invest on hard light and difusers
can work for video work, yes, photography tho... not really unless you got a more modern camera that came out in the last 3-4 years to get cleaner higher ISO.
@@Cwyrmthere are tutorials online - I've build one like this in the past, my mistake was sticking LED strips too close to each other - creating lots of heat dicipation problems, but on lower settings it was performing really well :)
Right .. This led pannel is like softbox 60x60cm but it is always a softbox. You wont put fresnel or optical spot. You can't use reflectors. Its always a soft light. You can put 1200W into softbox or 200W ... you don't have that choice with panel. You can take off front cloth from softbox and make harder light. You can use parabolic softbox and mimic natural light. Softboxes are deep for a reason. And yes, You can achive harder shadows with smaller softbox and softer with larger. I think it is nice as a fill light but won't replace bowens mount light which is more universal.
Great video! BTW, has anyone said that you and Ewan McGregor sound very similar? I didn’t realize it until I heard the audio without looking at the video. Keep it up, mate.
Hello . As always the main question is the length of cable . One in a set ? And any longer optional ? Cause we know it 99 % only special brand cables will work and the length of them usually limited So it can be a hard time to mount it to the ceiling and not to get wire in a wide shot... Then probably to mount a controll unit... Somehow It is also a big issue for the crane stands..we need a 2--3 meters up and 2-5 meters forward... To get a nice wide shot sometimes(here controll unit can be mounted easier) Another point . Is how do you consider is it more optimal chose for traveling alone and solo shooting. To pack them to the traveling case. Mats itself seems optimal, the dint take much space and it's pretty much impossible to brake or crack them (comparing to the tubes and mono sources fixtures) But the controll unit still big and probably can be dameged The battery is important thing too. Can it be powered by double/triple Npf970 with any special plate ? Do they sell one ? Do other brands works with a system ? V-mount batteries sometimes are too heavy/ not allowed in the plane / not easy to find in a lot of countries and cities.... Npf compatiblity sometimes really important And this bring me back to power /size/ power block size/ ways of powering ... Compare For traveling kit
@@SamHolland Thanks for your reply Sam, I really like what I saw in your review and considering buying the 600... however it's a good chunk of change to buy this one... I would prefer seeing a review of the LED mat shot without a diffusing and softening filter on the lens... this is not a fair representation of the light.
Point lights are far superior in terms of overall flexibility (think gobos, softboxes, fresnel lenses). They can be made soft, but a softbox can never be made into a hard light source, unless it is insanely powerful and used at a distance. The only advantage this has is in its size and portability.
What would convince someone to purchase this over the Amaran F22X? It’s cheaper and although Godox is improving, Amaran is a more trustworthy brand (imo). Maybe a video comparing the 2 would be beneficial? Love your content!
I get so confused about what to invest in - light mats or the recent ML 60, ML 60 II or the SL 60 when the most use would be for talking heads and corporate interviews 🤷🏼♀
I bought a Godox VL300 (not a cheap light), I used it a couple of times, and the following year, when I tried to use it again, it stopped working all of a sudden... and there went my expensive light. No more Godox again.
Have you tried LED light mats yet????? 😃
It is nice but more expensive than the Amaran version. However, having a 4x4 (600w) option is fantastic.

Better still if you use a monolight like from Aputure or Amaran, and attach a softbox using a Bowens speed ring.
An inexpensive sheet of diffusion fabric draped on top of it will quickly resolve that issue.

This piqued my interest 👀
Oooo what do you think?! 🎥
@@SamHolland Considering I shoot in a 10x8 feet room, compact but large source lighting is so clutch... and it's lightweight! Might need to consider picking one of these up haha
@@DavidZhou Ditto here, brother Zhou. Xièxiè.
🤩🎉🎥
Let us know if you do!
I am surprised to not see the zhiyun Molus g200. that little box light is INSANE.
Nice... but I invested all I needed to invest as far as light already .... including the aputure 1200d ... wish I have seen this pefore... Another issue.... you can make a hard light into soft ... but not the oposite.... so I'd rather invest on hard light and difusers
Thanks!
I wish this can be powered with the godox ad200 battery. This is a game changer.
can work for video work, yes, photography tho... not really unless you got a more modern camera that came out in the last 3-4 years to get cleaner higher ISO.
Saw the prices and just scrolled on by. Lol
Cool Sam,
Thabk you
Thank YOU 🙏🏻🎥
Looks like a fantastic product, but at £600 😮 I think I'll be sticking with the softbox
This is the kind of thing that could be built by someone with a bit of ee knowledge for
@@Cwyrmthere are tutorials online - I've build one like this in the past, my mistake was sticking LED strips too close to each other - creating lots of heat dicipation problems, but on lower settings it was performing really well :)
what strength black pro mist are you using? Might be a little soft for my tastes :)
What about flapjack lights that are just as thin? What so special about the ones you show?
If I am starting out and need a key light do you recommend I start with this instead of a standard cob and parabolic?
Looks great but cant buy another light ......... or can I ? Memore isn't that what Sheldon calls his Grandma !
😂 it sure is!!!! And you sure can! 👌🏻😉🎥
amazing. Thank you! :D
Great video! BTW, has anyone said that you and Ewan McGregor sound very similar? I didn’t realize it until I heard the audio without looking at the video. Keep it up, mate.
Thank you. 😂 no, I’ve not had that one before! 👏🏻 thanks for watching 🎥
not seeing them available anywhere
But how easy is it to swap out any of the LEDs if they break or run out of juice 🤔?
wow those look too good to be true haha. Great promo!
🙏🏻🤩🎥
Hello . As always the main question is the length of cable . One in a set ? And any longer optional ?
Cause we know it 99 % only special brand cables will work and the length of them usually limited
So it can be a hard time to mount it to the ceiling and not to get wire in a wide shot... Then probably to mount a controll unit... Somehow
It is also a big issue for the crane stands..we need a 2--3 meters up and 2-5 meters forward... To get a nice wide shot sometimes(here controll unit can be mounted easier)
Another point . Is how do you consider is it more optimal chose for traveling alone and solo shooting. To pack them to the traveling case. Mats itself seems optimal, the dint take much space and it's pretty much impossible to brake or crack them (comparing to the tubes and mono sources fixtures)
But the controll unit still big and probably can be dameged
The battery is important thing too. Can it be powered by double/triple Npf970 with any special plate ? Do they sell one ? Do other brands works with a system ?
V-mount batteries sometimes are too heavy/ not allowed in the plane / not easy to find in a lot of countries and cities....
Npf compatiblity sometimes really important
And this bring me back to power /size/ power block size/ ways of powering ... Compare
For traveling kit
Another thing I’m thinking, it doesn’t need a heavy c-stand, right?
That’s right. I’ve also been using it on my cheap flimsy stands 😂 just always be careful 🙏🏻😊🎥
Looks like you shot this with a Pro Mist filter on camera? Thanks for the review.
👌🏻 Tide Optics cine soft 1/8 🎥 well spotted
@@SamHolland Thanks for your reply Sam, I really like what I saw in your review and considering buying the 600... however it's a good chunk of change to buy this one... I would prefer seeing a review of the LED mat shot without a diffusing and softening filter on the lens... this is not a fair representation of the light.
I only used the filter on the talking head shots. Not the examples
What Led light suitable for live streaming ,?
Hi. I have a question about the F200Bi Panel. Can i power supplay this unit with only one vmount battery?
Thank you bro.. Great video.. Subscribed.. ❤
Thank you! 🤩🙏🏻 great to have you here!! 🎥🎉
Point lights are far superior in terms of overall flexibility (think gobos, softboxes, fresnel lenses). They can be made soft, but a softbox can never be made into a hard light source, unless it is insanely powerful and used at a distance.
The only advantage this has is in its size and portability.
So like... The Amaran F22x but not as good and more money. Got it.
Light mats are goated
Is there a more budget friendly version? I’d be happy with 60W as long as the price is under £150 😂
Falconeyes RX-18TD my friend! I have 2 and am obsessed!
So are there any cons to this light? Because this felt almost like a paid advertisement for the light that wasn’t disclosed.
What’s the difference between these and their FL line?
Godox has several, but the naming confuses me as the company writes FL250S / FL100 / FL60 on their Website (Europe).
What would convince someone to purchase this over the Amaran F22X? It’s cheaper and although Godox is improving, Amaran is a more trustworthy brand (imo). Maybe a video comparing the 2 would be beneficial? Love your content!
The Godox is cheaper in the UK
What about light noise?
I get so confused about what to invest in - light mats or the recent ML 60, ML 60 II or the SL 60 when the most use would be for talking heads and corporate interviews 🤷🏼♀
I bought a Godox VL300 (not a cheap light), I used it a couple of times, and the following year, when I tried to use it again, it stopped working all of a sudden... and there went my expensive light.
No more Godox again.
I want one but I think it's too expensive, unless the whole package of sl60w + stand + softbox ends up being similarly priced?
It’s 200W light which are usually more expensive anyway, plus the design. But if you don’t need 200W then you can definitely save money else where
