And this is why they call him the octopus, splitting his brain into quadrants, left foot holding the quarter pulse, right foot rolling the bass, right hand with swiss triplets, left hand holding an upbeat quarter. This is also why the latest album seems boring if you don't understand the complexity that went into each song. From a composer standpoint it's an absolute masterpiece

    • @andrewhussey4538

They're all genius, I know a few old school fans have had a bit of an issue since 10,000 Days actually. The reason I generally am given is variation, if you listen to Opiate and then Undertow, it's kind of a logical conclusion point. Then when Aenima came out it was a sudden and extreme shift, it's a perfect middle, it has the riffy rock root of Undertow with just a hint in songs like Third Eye and the like of where the band was heading, point being it's a massive evolution. Then Lateralus came out and they kind of crossed from just a really killer and smart metal band to that near religious experience feel, again, a massive evolution of their sound.
So you had four albums, each one a complete asimptote of an evolution in terms of the sound, to the point it's awe inspiring. Now it's not that I agree, but I know some people like me who were there when Opiate came out felt like 10,000 Days, as awesome as it is, sounds like just kind of an extension of Lateralus, and same with Fear Inoculum, they both (to those people) sound kind of like just more of the same... it's undoubtedly awesome, but I've heard some say it feels kind of like they're standing still since Lateralus, it's a great spot to be at but they miss that shock hearing something that sounds completely unlike anything from anything released before.
Again, this isn't so much me, I love both those albums but I can see where they're coming from, they're amazing but I can see how some will feel there's a risk in being in a comfortable space musically and they've become so comfortable in the sound they produce that it would be interesting to see them stretch themselves a bit more on their next album and try doing something maybe they're a bit uncomfortable trying, adding some new (or maybe old traditional) instruments or trying something outside their comfort zone.

@@andrewhussey4538 I think that’s well put. The first question that pops to my mind is, can Maynard’s voice match anything different? Like, he’s legit but there’s a reason you don’t hear Ticks and Leeches live anymore. Their sound is what it is because it’s what they can all play in unison with MJs vocals.

And also helped me accept that Tool is still amazing despite Maynard's reduced vocal range at age 56. I've grown to appreciate the entire record much more on further listens now. Many bands are just showcases for the vocalist, with other members occasionally taking center stage for a solo or whatever. Tool tends to be pretty balanced. Maynard's vocals are even mixed low so that his voice is just another instrument in the band. But Danny Carey is just so good that the band is increasingly becoming a showcase for his drums, especially on the new album. If you listen to it that way, you may find that you appreciate it much more.

Has Vin become a true Tool fan now? Isn’t it funny how you focus on a different instrument in a song and get a totally different song?

    • @Xanderj89

Perspective is a funny thing. It was interesting hearing him talk about listening to lyrics foremost, those are always the hardest to me. I can listen to a song dozens of times and not really know what they're saying, I see them as another instrument to deliver tone and rhythm, and only really get what they're trying to say if I force myself to focus on the words and not the way they're said. It's music first, message second. Makes listening to foreign music easy though lol, since I don't focus on words by default.

There is no drum kit, there is no Danny Carey. They are a single entity that know the sounds to be made and then it happens.
This is one of those vids that shows a human at the top of their game and it is mesmerizing.

Thanks to Tool/Danny Carey, I discovered classical (south) indian music. The origin. Percussionists showing off similar dexterity, but also being able to create this kind of magic in the moment - spontaneity, improvisation - I wish these guys could catch on to that, considering how long it takes for them to piece together each track/album (if not, I´m sure they´ll blow my mind again in 2035).

Like most Tool songs, this song deserves several listens. I try to listen to each song from each instrument. It gives you a new respect for exactly how much artistry they put into their work.
I was much like Vin in believing the newest album was not as good as the others. I have changed my mind and just view it as different but in no way lesser than previous albums.

Total limb independence is the biggest challenge for many drummers.
Learning to independently control your limbs, such that you can start playing 7/4 with one hand, and keep doing that 'mindlessly' from muscle memory, while you start playing # fundamentally different rhythm with your other hand, your left foot is keeping rhythm with the guitars, and your right foot is there for accenting bass drum beats.
You can learn a complex polyrhythm explicitly, and imitate this sort of limb independence, but drummers like danny carey can do it on the fly.
Ask him to play 5 on his left hand, 6 on his right hand, and 8 and 9 on his left and right feet, and he'd have it down within a minute or two.
The dedication and practice required to forcibly re-wire your brain to pull it off is just incredible.
And he practices so much that he makes it look easy. As a drummer, I deeply envy his dedication to the craft.

He uses custom electronic drums Vin! From the wiki -
"The Synesthesia Mandala Drum is a patented electronic drum pad developed by Vince DeFranco and drummer Danny Carey from Tool. It has 128 strike position detection rings from its center to its edge, along with 127 levels of velocity sensitivity. In its current iteration, mk2.9, both values are transmitted via USB MIDIto a computer, where they can be interpreted by any MIDI software. The Mandala also includes its own "Virtual Brain" software." So he can focus his strikes to hit a single spot on a drum head and make alt sounds.

Please notice that during the breakdown of the song, Danny starts 9:40 out with what they call a hemiola. By 10:30, he's using the WIDEST stay if drums and mandala pads. 10:58, he begins working his way back to the center of the kit as the intensity builds. He starts cycling down the number of drums he's interacting with, even as he's applying more physical power to the center of the kit!! (He misses a step at 13:28, but it's almost impossible to notice!)
    Amazing control.
He's so relaxed that at 9:44 he has time to spare Maynard a smile as he was by him! Inhuman... Or, rather, EXCEPTIONALLY human!!
As a guitarist, I will say that your band is only as good as its drummer!

Listen to the album a few more times Vin. When I first heard the album I was a little ‘meh’ too, but after 3 or 4 listens it became incredible. You really feel the vibes in all the riffs and the complex brilliance in the song writing. Especially with the drum work. It needs multiple listens to appreciate it 🤘😎 - Oh and play it LOUD! The louder it is the better!!

  • @battleborn4132

As you learn to play time signatures, " pockets" form, and after a while you get accustomed to some things that you don't even have to concentrate on much, and in some cases like Danny, Neil, Bonham, etc. You can do so much at once without realizing it. It's difficult to explain in words sometimes. But that left foot is doing so much that goes unheard unless you listen for it. If you have drummer friends, have them show you step by step. I probably made it worse, I'm sorry, but I'm self taught and it took a long time to do what I've been fortunate enough to do, then... A guy like Danny as well as others, make you realize how special these guys are. And it goes way back to jazz, blues, big band, etc. Over decades.

As a Tool fanatic since about 1994 I highly recommend listening to Fear Innoculum again. I am a huge Tool fan and it took me some time to appreciate all the nuances in it. I listened to it every day in my car for about a year now. (Pre Covid) It took me about a month to really get into it. It's not my favorite Tool album but it fits nicely into their catalogue. "Pneuma" , "Descending", "Invincible", and "7empest" are among their greatest songs ever IMHO. I hope you give it another shot.
