I’m a psychotherapist. When I first got into Tool, I was in undergrad studying psychology and philosophy. From there, the more I listened the more I got into Carl Jung, then collective unconscious, Plato, and other forms of archetypal thinking. So I went to get my Masters in psych with the intention of a PhD in philosophy, all meanwhile listening to more and more tool and exploring my own consciousness. Now, I’m 12 years into my professional of helping people find ways to discover themselves. Thanks to tool

I'm a clinical social worker, wassup 😊 I wasn't ready for the aggression when I first heard Tool in high school (I'm a sensative soul), but as my emotional complexity has matured I've fallen further and further in love with them. I'm a neurology nerd, and I just love the human capacity for shared psychological profundity through music, and few bands channel that gift better than these guys. I love hearing Adam's synesthesia paint for us through his guitar, and the madness that is Danny's wild polyrhythmic ambidextrousness, not to mention Maynard's heartwrenching lyrics and delivery, and Justin's precussive baselines that pulses that driving beat. They put you in a flow state and pull you through a journey of timelessness. They've helped me through a lot of difficult feelings and experiences with what they do.

I might be totally wrong, but I think Tool fans are very empathetic people. I say that because if you discover Tool, you have to want to discover something or learn something or love something before you end up liking the music. Most mainstream music is short, in and out with basic lyrics and radio friendly. Tool is the opposite of that. And speaking from experience, if you want to love tools music you have to be in for the long ride. I think that's why tool fans are so passionate, they invested the time in letting the music mold their emotions as the artist intended.

I think Tool Fans are across the board as far as personality and professions. I find folks that appreciate Tool, have a high appreciation of music that mentally moves a person. Likes to go on a journey to another place and time. Uses music as a way to go to another realm of understanding. Really its hard to explain how Tool can affect people. Personally, I accidentally stumbled onto Tool watching a Beavis and Butthead show back in the 90's. They became my favorite band after the second album, and I have never looked back!! @@markgeisler7709 agreed 100%. If you only listened to Opiate and Undertow, it’d be very easy to assume that Tool, or at least MJK, is very anti-religion and atheistic. However, it’s been interesting to see the evolution of the band and the lyrics from Opiate to a song like Pneuma for instance. Tool’s music to me is very much steeped in philosophy and IMO is almost gnostic in nature, not nihilistic or atheistic.

I lost a girlfriend/friend to a battle with alcoholism leading to suicide. For weeks and weeks after her death I couldnt cry to the experience. I felt like I was broken emotionally because of it. The crescendo of this song was the first moment where all that emotion with her loss came through me and I cried hard. It was so cathartic for me I listened to it every day until the tears lessened. Even though the meaning of the song is for his mother, I can still vicariously feel personal loss through it.

4:35 "It's just amazing how that pans around like that."
Adam played his guitar through a Leslie speaker. Basically, the speaker is mounted in the cabinet facing down into a spinning baffle that projects the sound horizontally, creating the panning effect as it spins.
    17:30 "Is that a violin?"
No, that's a guitar. He's either using a volume knob on the guitar; or a volume pedal; or possibly an eBow, which is a little device that uses magnetic fields to cause a guitar string to vibrate.
I *suspect* that Adam is just using the volume knob on the guitar itself, but I don't really know.

I'm a 42 year old woman. Master's degree in sociology, bachelor's degree in philosophy, living in semi-rural Kentucky -- maybe not the best representative of the common Tool demographic. I first heard Tool back in high school when the album Undertow came out. There was a metric shit ton of good music to come out in the 90s, but nothing sounded like Tool. I wasn't smoking weed back then, but when I got into college I started -- it had nothing to do with my love for Tool. Other than the mastery of the musical artistry the band exhibits, the lyrics of some Tool songs (and the song's composition itself) are philosophical treatises to the discerning listener. I am insanely happy you love Tool. Also, my mother still lives but I feel Maynard's pain in this song because my grandfather was the epitome of what a Christian is supposed to be. I'm not a hard believer myself, like Maynard, but I hope there is a heaven for people like my grandfather, even if I don't see it, because he lived his life with love, dignity, and faith, and he deserves the heaven his religion promised him.

57 year old Navy vet, married with no kids. I've been listening to Tool since Undertow and "Sober" came out. Tool's introspection through music is unparalleled. Penetrating and mind-bending lyrics, unique time signatures, as well as their signature way of stacking or layering their music, and then unstacking it piece-by-piece to let you down easy at the end. Melodic, powerful, and unlike anything else you may ever listen to. Tool defies categorization or stereotype. Their musicianship is not only top notch with each instrument (to include Maynard's voice), but it is the way they seamlessly integrate all of the components in each song. Maynard sings not only from his heart but from his very soul. Adam plays guitar, but also makes it sing and complements Danny nicely with his percussive guitar. Justin is like the lubrication that keeps everything anchored, on course, and flowing smoothly downstream. Danny is in his own category as a drum wizard--I would love to see an MRI of his brain while he's laying it down! Although quite different, the only band I've seen that puts as much love and artistry into its composures is Opeth. Check out "Ghost of Perdition"--Live at Red Rocks, for another mind-stretching experience.

60 year old retired preschool and special education teacher, mom to 2 daughters in their 30s and my son in Heaven, who would be 38 now but he passed at 31 and I miss him every single day. Enjoyed Tool in the 90s through first years of 2000s but it wasn't until my son died that Tool suddenly became the only band that somehow kept me sane and helped me process a lot of deep stuff going on with me, and it was really the first time I ever got into the lyrics and was like how could I have missed THIS all these years, that aspect of Tool beyond just the music and how it healed my broken spirit in some fashion I can't explain. While my devout Christian sister was texting me links to comforting Christian music I was donning my headphones and diving deep into Tool for the same spiritual succour she was attempting to give me. Not that those Christian worship songs were bad or anything but they could not help me in the way Tool inexplicably spoke to me. My middle child has a genetic defect and autism and at 35 she still functions on a 6-7 year old level and has numerous medical issues as well as her autistic behaviors; she lives with me still and I am her sole caregiver, and when I become too stressed or exhausted some days, Tool is a meditation for me, a way to find space to listen and go within and deal with my stress. My youngest daughter is an electrical engineer and has been a Tool fan since she was a teen and she and I would crank up 46&2 in our old car and sing at top volume and headbang together driving her to soccer or tennis or orchestra, where she played viola ha. She is 33 now and still loves Tool though she also blasts a lot of classic Pearl Jam ha. I love a lot of classic rock bands like The Eagles and The Doobie Brothers and Boston and so on and have wonderful nostalgic emotions for so much classic rock and r&b; but for the past 7 years Tool has been my fave band period.

As we watched her mind and spirit slip away, knowing she too not only had to be her in her body, she to watched her body become her trap that shut her in and away from the spirit that once was .. She did.. But never let us in on how broken .. I know she felt, she was a beautiful artistic kind selfless soul .. At that time handicap individuals were just starting to be seen too, not just to be .. I was fortunate to be with them as they left this journey to the next .. Also was a hospice set nurse for 30 yrs .. Many people I've seen them through those final days.. I knew of how important it truly is to see your loved, cared ones ,, all ones. On.. To honor as they just were .. No more anyone. But them .. Its their time.. Last time to give them their time only. but them. and I hope someone will at least just see me on to my roads set out for me.. So at that moment I know someone seen me leave .. And so they can close the door behind me.. I hope my journey is full of the many weird twists I've had here.. Just not as the too many painful twists...
I can't listen to sober as I had addiction running around in my body .. But my beautiful daughter is im afraid going to lose her fight .. I don't know if I should pray or loose my mind from each time to the other

Tool Army here. I’m mid 40s, business analyst in big pharma. I’ve been a Tool fan for over 25 years but only in the last 10 I realized they are what brought me through some very dark places in my life. Welcome to the Army and enjoy where they take you

I read an interview with Maynard, early in his career with Tool, that he doesn't consider himself a "lead singer"; he is another instrument in the band that creates words. Thought that was interesting.
Thank you for your reactions. I enjoy them immensely.

These songs came out a few years after I lost my mom. I dedicated them to her. Every time I hear them, I tear up.

You have embarked on the Journey of Maynard's life through song and it's amazing! These two songs are part of Maynard's healing journey with music. It starts with "Judith" by A Perfect Circle, then goes on to "Jimmy" from Tool and finishes with Wings Part 1 and then 2. I'm fortunate enough to be able to have seen Tool live a couple of times and they played Descending at both concerts. That song absolutely blows your mind live!

The next two-parter, you should check out is parabol/parabola. Make sure to find one of the videos with both songs. All of Tools' multi-part songs should be allowed to transition into the following song as the transition itself is part of the song.
I am a union pipefitter, and I have been a die-hard fan of tool since 2018. I had heard the typical edited songs they had playing on the radio and liked them, but I never got one of the albums and truly listened to the music. One day, I decided to smoke some weed, and I put on 10,000 days while I read the lyrics. I listened to the entire album in one sitting. It was an amazing experience that took me on a roller coaster of emotions. Tool became my absolute favorite band from that point forward.
I have always felt that every song by tool felt like its own self-contained album, and every album was the equivalent of an entire discography. The signature style you talk about, I describe as being able to hear the shear mastery each band member possesses and that no other band is that good.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist and personal musical coach/director secretly disguised as a mild mannered golf coarse employee. A Dad to 2 boys. next year i start my 50th year of riding skateboards. My state has legal weed and I wholeheartedly approve. My guilty pleasure is watching someone become a TooL fan so reaction channels are my crack. DO WHAT EVER YOU HAVE TO DO TO SEE THEM LIVE!!!!!!! Seriously sell a kidney if you have to, I was at the Portland Or, show on the second leg of the 10,000 Days tour. The show at Memorial Coliseum and because Maynard had a sinus infection(we were lucky to have a show that night) they chose a setlist that was light on vocal parts and they played Sad Wings and 10,000 Days,,,what a treat. They also played Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned, can't wait to see that one blow your mind. DMT and/or Alien Abduction, what else do you need?
Also got to see the Mar. 11th Portland show on the last show before the shutdown. I was able to see the Jan 20 Eugene show and they played Descending on both of those show. Seeing it live twice....I can die a happy man
