Thank you!!! I asked my hubby to take a look at the toilet and he said "call a plumber, that looks complicated" - I have to tell you he typically fixes everything! I mean everything! His response surprised me, so I googled and found your video, ran off to HD, and fixed it myself. I texted him "I fixed the toilet!" - His response "What? I guess you don't need me anymore" LOL.. Thanks again!
This was handy to learn what wasn't my problem. I traced my problem to the "flush or trap handle" after exploring the problem suggested by this video. Kohler has a mechanism that fits into a square hole on the outside of the toilet. The actual chrome handle has to be able to move through this mechanism in order to full and release the chain. After time the plastic mechanism can expand and tighten down on the small metallic pipe that actually goes from the handle to the metal (or plastic) rod that attaches to the flush chain. My fix was to gently drill out the plastic locking section of the "flush handle mechanism" so that the metal rod was no longer hanging up when used. This allowed the mechanism to work properly and no longer hang up when flushing the toilet. No more annoying running toilet. I haven't seen this mentioned on any other Kohler repair video so thought I'd post it here in case anyone want to update their presentations.
I just bought one of these newer style toilets and for the life of me, could not get the tank to fill up! Turns out my assembly wasn't even tightened. Your video led to me discovering this and I was able to fix the problem! Thank you!!!!
Thanks! Readjusting the seal worked (you might not have to replace it). Keep in mind that turning the cylinder is hard so you might feel like you’re breaking it.
I simply flipped over the rubber seal, wiped it off a little, and also where it contacts the base of the tank around the hole, and it's worked so far at no cost.
Wow! That was easy! My house got flooded with storm surge from Hurricane Ian (Sept 28th '22) so the entire area of homes have to have the walls and cabinetry torn out and redone. I scored a Kohler toilet that a neighbor had set to the curb for FEMA to pick up. I plumbed it in this morning and darn if it didn't have the exact problem you covered here! I popped the offending gasket loose all the way around the groove. It was very compacted in that slot so I just stretched it out all the way around and reassembled the center part of the tower and the seal is perfect. Thank you for the well explained simple fix. I would suggest folks just doing what I did first before spending for the new gasket.
I’m a home owner and I hate plumbing so imagine my face when the wife said the toilet keeps ringing 🤦🏻♂️ so I ran to UA-cam and after seeing a few videos saying to completely dismantle and that I need a special tool ( wrench ) to dismantle I was like 🤦🏻♂️. So after watching you video I was extremely thankful for you making this video. Your a life saver. Now I can get back to beer 🍺 and couch. And thanks for making me look like a hero cheers and I liked and subscribed to you. 😜👍
Thanks for this. First I changed the gasket at the bottom of the "flapper". That did nothing. What did stop my running toilet was to rinse out the fill valve. Took ten minutes!!!! The best part was it didn't cost a penny! Kohler has a video on how to do it.
You just saved me a bunch of money. I couldn’t figure out why the bowl was so low, and it turns out that dang white tube was out of the little hole. Thank you!
I was having this very problem, and thanks to your video and a trip to Home Depot, my toilet is operating like new again. Thank you so much for putting up this video, Geoff.
Old video but still holds true, thank you for this video. I’m normally a handy person and learn how things work while I take them apart to fix them. We just bought and moved into a new house and 2 of the bathroom toilets were having issues. This video helped me understand how the tank fill systems worked so I could fix the other issues with them. I was dumbfounded when I didn’t find a flapper or ball when I pulled the tank lid off. Thanks again.
Yea I echo all the comments in this video. I was gonna downvote cause you were putting your hand in all that nastiness but you did stuff in this video that literally turned on a light bulb in my head and I literally fixed my toilet in just 10 seconds (no lie). Took apart the only piece I needed and wham bam, working toilet flusher. Wow. When you have that going for you and all the other comments in this video saying the same thing - you know your video is gold - so thank you for this! Upvoted.
My commode took 7 minutes to stop running after every flush, and thanks to you I just turned the screw thing 2 clicks counter-clockwise and it works perfectly now. THANK YOU!!!!
A million people give instructions to replace the seal on a canister flush valve, but nobody shows how to replace the canister itself. I’ve replaced the valve so many times I could do it in my sleep. What do I do if that doesn’t fix the problem? Please don’t misunderstand my comments. You’re putting this info out for others at no charge, and that’s commendable. I’m just frustrated (and the Kohler video turned off comments - so I can’t complain to them). Thank you for your video.
Thank you. My orange washer was completely off. I put it back on and the running stopped! Gonna buy replacements for both toilets just to be safe. You saved me a lot of aggravation!
This is EXACTLY what I needed to learn to figure out how to fix my (apparently weird) toilet. All the other videos I found were about how to fix flapper style toilets. Thank you so much!
Thanks, I couldn't figure out why my brand new toilet kept running every 2 minutes. Turns out someone in the factory set the chain 1 section too tight and caused the tiniest of leaks. Thanks again, this video helped me quickly figure out what was wrong.
Oh my gosh...thank you. This is exactly what was wrong! I did everything else he said and then I saw this comment. The length of that chain never occurred to me as a possible problem!
quick tip, put the water hose line under the fill valve floater arm and it will keep the water from running without having to mess with the shut off valve while you work on it
Thank you for this great tutorial. After Farther's day dinner 2018 at Mother-in-law's home here in the Philippines, my beautiful bride asked if I could take a look at her Mom's Kholer, it would not fill. The unit in question is a little different design than your demo unit, with a push-button built into the lid rather than a flush handle on the side of the tank. The fill valve looks like my best friend the Fluid-master. Five minutes with you and about 90 seconds watching a Kholer factory repair video on the fill valve has given me all the information we will ever need to keep the fixture in top shape. Now, we cross our fingers the seal will be in stock tomorrow if needed? Always best to know how something is supposed to come apart for repair rather than using excessive force and destroy parts.
Your video made the repair on our toilet really easy! It was just the O-ring on the bottom of the tower flush thing -- but you showed how to take it off! Thank!
Thank you for the video. My toilet wasn't filling up at all in the bowl itself. After watching this video, I saw that the tube is in the cylinder itself. For whatever reason, mine was out. I just put it back in and bam, it's filling up with water again.
I changed the fill valve like you suggested and that took care of it.Ordered it from Home Depot took about a week for it to come in.All is good thanks for your help
Super helpful, thanks! Some kind of mi real deposit had built up on the gasket, so all I needed to do was clean it off and it’s working perfectly again! (I’m going to get a few spare gaskets for the 3 toilets I have like this, though, so I’ll be prepared for the future.)
I tried all options and they still would run but it was random. Both toilets were installed 2 years ago and I have had the running issue since install. It was DIY install. I finally noticed the chain on the handle had 2 extra links as it came this way from the factory. I dropped it to one extra link and since then neither toilets have had an issue. I believe the gasket has a solid seat now.
This is exactly what my running toilet looked like inside. I replaced the fill valve with a Flowmaster universal, $20 at Home Depot, and now it’s fine. So easy to install too. I’m a 67 year old widow whose husband used to take care of this kind of thing. If I can do it, anybody can.
Hello. Thanks for the information. I have a new house (built in 2017.) My Kohler only runs once every week or so. May last a day. Then it stops. I did not take the thing off to look at the seal but it looks really nice inside. I was hesitant to replace a seal if not needed. I am new to UA-cam and not sure of the rules but I thought I'd ask for any suggestions for what my toilet is doing. Thanks
This could be rare but considering it's still a new house sometimes Plumbers Don't deburr the pipes when they're put in you could be getting debris inside of your fill valve but this is rare also if you are on a well for water sometimes sand and sediment can make it way up through the pipes and get under the seals of that fill valve this is a long stretch though I would still look at the seal to see if it's seated correctly and also if you use those toilet bowl cleaners that make the water blue are the bleach tablets it eats the seals up really quickly
@@geoffhoweth thank you so much. I have no well. I do not use any tank cleaner and won't. My seal is orange but I guess it doesn't have to match? Also, I do NOT need to turn the water off, correct?
Thanks for the vid, i'm off to go fix mine now. (Bothers me that so many people would post a negative comments or dislike for someone just trying to help others, rock on!)
Thank you very much, I just had to fix the orange thing on the bottom that was loose. I did not even have to take off the whole thing to fix it. It's working great again.
I have many problems with flappers. I have tried different flappers. I even tried replacing the whole flush valve 3 times. The first was a complete Korky flush valve, it phantom filled. The tried a FluidMaster, it phantom filled, not as ofter. The third time, I replaced with a Kohler Cylinder style and never get a phantom fill. The only issue with the Kohler is you have to hold the flush handle until the flush is complete, then release to refill the tank.
First time I’ve had to address the toilet in my new place and the different inside threw me off. Would have taken me quite awhile to figure out how to remove the center part without your video. Also took your advice to clean the rubber gasket (and then I flipped it). Thanks!
I replaced the float and tge flush valve. I still have a slow quiet drip sound. It has improved but it’s still there. I can’t find any videos on how to replace the base. The Kohler instructions just said, “it’s difficult” ha ha! It’s the only thing left to replace! I have a one-piece tresham model. Do you know if any videos or a special tool I can use that won’t damage base on install?
I had this issue and all i did was go to homedepot and bought a whole new flapper setup and replace the whole thing along with the flush valve. Got rid of the canister style that it came with.
What about a brand new toilet we just installed? Do we need to replace that orange seal for a toilet fresh out of the box? I hear it running every hour or so. We've only had it a few days.
Worked just as you said. I will add that the quarter turn to get it off was very hard until I sprayed WD40 down the tube. That loosened it up and came of easy
Please, How do you stop water from running over canister? Every video address replacing seal at bottom, my issue is apparently with the float adjust? Tried adjusting screw, even took the plastic screw thing off, put it back on, water still rises above top of canister, running every 5 to 10 minutes. Thanks for your help!
Aw. Thank you for this video. I have this exact toilet and the exact problem you described went to HD got the wrong part for the salesman. Going back to get the simple rubber seal; complete my weekend bathroom project. Again thx for the vid.
Once I realized I was turning the incorrect way (clock wise vs counter clockwise) this worked perfectly. All toilets now back in running order thanks for the $6 fix vs an $100 plumbing bill
My Kohler has same kit but water fill hose on mine feeds the tank and not into top of canister. Mine won't stop running after cleaning and replacing rubber gasket. The float not coming up all the way unless I move it up myself.
One of the different thing you might want to try and everyone out there. I discovered it's a quick fix and it works. And if I have to redo it every once in awhile it's because I have hard water the slide that goes up and down inside the toilet tank get loaded with hard water deposits and gets stuck. Spraying a little WD-40 on the slide below the cap helps out it works fine and doesn't run again
I'd never seen this style before but ran into one at my mother's house. The rubber seal was off of the tube. The video was extremely hepful in seeing how it was assembled and what to do to fix it.
Thanks for explaining this Jeff. I really enjoyed your video and think it would help your viewers to learn how to shut off the water before inspecting the valve gasket so they don't get their clothes wet.
I have adjusted the float in every position and it continues to run which in return keeps my pump turning on a lot . I tried this video and still having issues with it running, Please help!!!!!!
Cut it a little bit shorter not too short the lid is hitting it when you put on the lid making it pop out of place if that doesn't work I guess you could super glue it thanks for watching
Thank you for making this video, Jeff! My apartment's Kohler toilet has been a nightmare since I moved in back in 2017 and I swear I've probably watched this video once every 3 months since just to double-check I'm fixing it correctly because having issues multiple times per year is just maddening. Low flow flush = line clog from toilet paper alone because my building's ancient pipes apparently need the full flush at all times, cylinder seal pops = running, cylinder rising popping water hose off the top cap = running, adjusting arm lift chain length to try to reduce the times the cylinder rising pops the water hose off the top cap = now the cap comes along too when it pops off and runs, etc. Plus my model came with a plastic domed lid which even a skinny friend found made an uncomfortable popping noise like it was about to snap and launch plastic shards into her ass when she sat on its closed top to watch me try on some makeup in the pre-pandemic times. It's just such a bad design to the point that I actively recommend to anyone rennovating to not buy Kohler toliets anymore, like an anti-advertisement. But as long as I'm stuck being a renter, this is my life at the mercy of Kohler toilets, so thank you Jeff for showing me how to DIY the 60-second fixes the maintenance man laughed over originally, saying he wished every call were that easy!
You can get most all Kohler (and equivalent) parts at Home Depot. The price will be very reasonable also. I have replaced darn near every part in my Kohler toilet.
i have a flapper release one i just installed a new one , and now when toilet is full it turns on every 5 minutes and runs water for about 5 seconds? should i clean around flapper area ? or do i have to replace fill valve ?
Yes...thank you for posting! My Mom's toilet was...or is running and I was like "no problem". Then took tank lid off and was like "WTF is this crap (lol).. where's the flapper"?!?
For a few years now my toilet will not flush completely unless we hold the flush handle down until the toilet completely flushes. The large cylinder drops as soon as we let go of the handle and therefore makes it so there is not enough water leaving the tank into the bowl to flush. Any ideas?
I followed these instructions and found a hard plastic black piece from manufacturer that was left on the rubber seal. Scraped off the black plastic and now the toilet doesn't run!
I replaced the sealed and after three weeks my toilet starting running again and now it runs several times throughout the day. I don't know what else to do to fix this running issue.
My Kohler toilet has been running continuously for hours today after the last flash (flush handle doesn't work since this time). First the bowl filled and then took hours to drain. Then at one point the water level in the bowl stayed the same whilst the water was still running. But now the water bowl water level is rising and it's 4am & I need to know whether the water level can overflow while I'm sleeping. Is it safe to turn off the water knob thingy near the ground till the plumber comes?
Thank you!!! I asked my hubby to take a look at the toilet and he said "call a plumber, that looks complicated" - I have to tell you he typically fixes everything! I mean everything! HAHAHA That's awesome Thanks For Watching Shelley Griesemer. Glad I could help. Just do me a favor and don't put him on the couch tonight 😂
LOL... won't to do that... I promise!
Some man you have… you sure he’s the husband?
Same here my husband said the hose doesn't go in the hole and we had no water in the bowl
Same with my husband , he said look up a video on youtube 😂

Good explanation. We just did this repair. Home Depot has this part. If you turn off the water you won't get soaked lol

I like how your just up front and honest and you do what you do to teach us how to do it in an American way. Thanks buddy.

I replaced the rubber washer - $7 at Lowe’s. Fixed. Thanks for the video!!!!!
Thanks Bro. Ran to Home Depot, got a new Kohler washer and voila ! It's Fixed ! Not running anymore.

Thanks for the help! No idea how to get that big tube out.
You are a terrific! Watched the video waiting for my kids in their school car line. Got home. Red seal was off. Thank you so much. 🤗
Cory Rubal Hey anytime Thanks so much for watching .

Amazing. Took me about 45 seconds to fix the problem. So happy! Thank you!
I am so glad that this video helped you it doesn't really take a genius to do what I do and as always thanks for watching
just wanted to comment and thank you for saving me a plumber call. thank god it was this easy.

First time I’ve had to address the toilet in my new place and the different inside threw me off. Would have taken me quite awhile to figure out how to remove the center part without your video. Also took your advice to clean the rubber gasket (and then I flipped it). Thanks!
So was that a quarter turn counter-clockwise to get it off?
Say what you want. Great video. Man knows how a toilet works.
Hey man, thanks for this! Managed to get the toilets fixed at my vacation home no problems
Perfect, reinstalled the gasket which was simply loose. Yes I'm sure it should eventually be replaced.
Thanks man!
Hey, he's great to help out those in need. Maybe try thanking him too. Any rate good job man. I followed yr instructions and it worked...thanks!
I replaced the float and tge flush valve. I still have a slow quiet drip sound. It has improved but it’s still there. I can’t find any videos on how to replace the base. The other UA-cam video on how to fix a kohler running toilet did not help me but this one did the trick - thanks!!!
I had this issue and all i did was go to homedepot and bought a whole new flapper setup and replace the whole thing along with the flush valve. Got rid of the canister style that it came with.
is the shut off valve broken? your a great instructor... you make it fun!
What about a brand new toilet we just installed? Do we need to replace that orange seal for a toilet fresh out of the box? I hear it running every hour or so. We've only had it a few days.
My problem is the fill hose keeps popping out. Any suggestions for how to keep it seated in the canister fill tube, please? Thanks!
I have the yellow tube and that part with the round piece will not stay in place. Has been like that since installed by plumber about 8-9 years ago.
Worked just as you said. I will add that the quarter turn to get it off was very hard until I sprayed WD40 down the tube. That loosened it up and came of easy
Thank you! Was hard to find this among all the flapper videos.
I replaced the fill valve and gasket, but the water is still trickling. I'm not sure what else it could be?
Please, How do you stop water from running over canister? Every video address replacing seal at bottom, my issue is apparently with the float adjust?
Tried adjusting screw, even took the plastic screw thing off, put it back on, water still rises above top of canister, running every 5 to 10 minutes. Thanks for your help!
Is it difficult to change the seal on the tank itself? That seems like a bigger job, but most of the in-tank leaks are related to that gasket.
What is the plastic rod that looks like it is phillips head screwdriver adjustable?
Cleaned the rubber seal and it worked! Thanks so much!
Took a toothbrush to my gasket and scrubbed off the limescale and what do you know? It worked. Thanks.
What it the white gasket that is just below where the overflow goes into? Is that white gasket necessary and what is it for because mine broke off.
So it is a quarter-turn click vs threaded
I have an elongated toliet and I'm not sure what replacement kit I need. The one I have has a flapper that doesn't seal
Replace the fill valve
One of the different thing you might want to try and everyone out there. I discovered it's a quick fix and it works. And if I have to redo it every once in awhile it's because I have hard water the slide that goes up and down inside the toilet tank get loaded with hard water deposits and gets stuck. Spraying a little WD-40 on the slide below the cap helps out it works fine and doesn't run again
I'd never seen this style before but ran into one at my mother's house. The rubber seal was off of the tube. The video was extremely hepful in seeing how it was assembled and what to do to fix it.
Thank you. I fixed my toilet watching your instruction
What happens when you flush and the toilet doesn’t fill up? How do you fix that?
Thank you for the this mini course. I have the intermittent hiss from a leak . Peace.
Thanks, with your video even a novice like me was able to do this the first time.
I tried this video and still having issues with it running, Please help!!!!!!
question, white tube how to make it stay in place?? keeps popping out
Cut it a little bit shorter not too short the lid is hitting it when you put on the lid making it pop out of place if that doesn't work I guess you could super glue it thanks for watching
Yes, so does mine. Crazy
Thanks Dude took less than minute to fix mine thanks you!
Great job! Toilet fixed in a flash. Many thanks.
i have a flapper release one i just installed a new one , and now when toilet is full it turns on every 5 minutes and runs water for about 5 seconds? should i clean around flapper area ? or do i have to replace fill valve ?
I can't get the canister out. I turned it a quarter turn but it still doesn't want to come up and out. I am afraid of breaking it. Any suggestions?
Very helpful video. Now I understand my Kohler toilet and this saved me money. Thanks!
Anytime Jason thanks for watching
Yes...thank you for posting!
My Mom's toilet was...or is running and I was like "no problem". Then took tank lid off and was like "WTF is this crap (lol).. where's the flapper"?!?
For a few years now my toilet will not flush completely unless we hold the flush handle down until the toilet completely flushes. The large cylinder drops as soon as we let go of the handle and therefore makes it so there is not enough water leaving the tank into the bowl to flush. Any ideas?
Mine is brand new and was just installed a week ago, but it's running. I'll try this.
same problem as Randy Boggs, i changed the seal and it still have leaking water for my Santa Rosa Kohler.
Thanks for the help I fixed my toilet late at night
very helpful, knowing I could twist that part off with a partial turn. I was afraid to break it before watching.
mine broke off!!! I just replaced it with a new center piece.
Thank you that was easier than I expected. It did fix the problem changing that ring.
Model # is on the inside top wall of the toilet bowl
So fast and easy! Thanks for saving me a repair bill.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Good insight it saved me from ordering a Flushing Valve off of Amazon. Good Job sir, simple instructions!
Thanks for watching Glad I could help
Very informative..ths
Hey the refill tube/hose keeps falling out how do I make it stay in place?
I followed these instructions and found a hard plastic black piece from manufacturer that was left on the rubber seal. Scraped off the black plastic and now the toilet doesn't run!
I replaced the sealed and after three weeks my toilet starting running again and now it runs several times throughout the day. I don't know what else to do to fix this running issue.
Hadn't seen that type before. Watched your video, gave it try and it worked. Thanks Geoff!
Hey No problem Thank you so much for watching .
UA-cam is making the world 🌍 a better place
My Kohler toilet has been running continuously for hours today after the last flash (flush handle doesn't work since this time). First the bowl filled and then took hours to drain. Then at one point the water level in the bowl stayed the same whilst the water was still running.
But now the water bowl water level is rising and it's 4am & I need to know whether the water level can overflow while I'm sleeping. Is it safe to turn off the water knob thingy near the ground till the plumber comes?
Thanks for putting this clip up Geoff. Save me a lot of time and money and a very easy fix
