Shiv Roy from Succession is a Terrible Person

  • All hail Sarah Snook for the performance of a lifetime.
In this spoilery video essay about Succession, we talk about why Shiv is is just terrible. Maybe not as bad as her siblings or maybe the worst of them all? There's a lot of discourse around her character lately but if you look back over the four seasons of Succession, Shiv has been written consistently as a truly awful person. While I think there's a possible skew of hating on her because she's a woman, we need to point out that she's not a girl boss. She puts her needs in front of everyone else, betrays her siblings and her husband, and reacts harshly to any kind of disloyalty when she gives absolutely no loyalty. Though, in the end, she made the right choice.

The interesting thing to me about the finale is it seems like Connor was the #1 boy all along?! He planned the funeral, he was at a dinner party performing silly songs and poems with his dad and the old guard just before he died. He got his dad's medals. She is literally the worst person. She always overestimates her position and bites off more than she can chew. She always uses everything, from her political position, to her pregnancy to her marriage with Tom to leverage people who are in weaker positions. She tries to have her cake and eat it too but then plays victim when things don't work out. Any worse of all in the final scene, her choice literally ripped the family apart. Kendall will never recover from this and will never forgive shiv. All because she hated the image of him winning over her that she chose a life that basically mirrors her mother (a mother that she absolutely hated)- a housewife, absent mother to her children and stuck in a loveless marriage to a CEO of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate. She literally became the thing she hated the most because she couldn't have the ego or bear the idea that kendall would win over her. Not to mention how Tom was basically a slave for her until the end of season 3. Once shiv saw Kendall's feet on logan's desk, she decided right then and there that she would rather drag everyone down than see Kendall win.

But Shiv was so unbelievably cruel to Tom! I felt bad for her when Logan dangled the CEO position in front of her and yanked it back but she soon lost my sympathy. By contrast, I see Kendall is a tragic hero. He just wanted the CEO position so bad and just wanted his siblings by his side only to get stabbed in the back over and over. Not in the power and wealth sense obviously but in the behavior. Thinking only of herself, wanting for everything to always win out for her, being absolutely sure she knows so much better than anyone else about anything, full of arrogance, fearing any sort of intimacy and hiding emotions to not be "weak", general childish behavior etc.
Together with whith Sarah snook's performance of all those emotions and her general appearance, it's almost scary for me.

As for Shiv, I'm really satisfied with her ending.. many might think Shiv won but on contrary she's the one that got the worse cos of her jealousy, selfishness and stupidity. She's in a loveless marriage (which will end anytime), pregnant with a man she doesn't love and will most probably cheat with Mattson who will treat her like shit.. her relationship with her brother will never mend after that betrayal and she will end up exactly like her mother but just more bitter.

I don't like when they say that Shiv's behavior is because "being a woman" is the only strategy she had to get ahead, is reductionist and perpetuates some language about women in the corporate world that is unfair to successful female executives that are NOT disloyal, or back-stabbing or manipulative snakes like Shiv, but hard-working serious women that have earned their positions not by fast-tracking using bloodline but putting the hours in a desk.
Shiv's behavior is because her upbringing was completely empty emotionally so she never was taught to love unconditionally nor she had the nurturing environment to make her feel emotionally secure as a child so she doesn't trust or love anybody but herself. Is not because "she is a woman" competing against 3 brothers.
Of course, I am not saying that women don't have to be tough, smart, and sharp to get respected in certain industries dominated by men, but Shiv is not IT. Just remember the contempt of Shiv for having to learn the business and get experience as if she was born superior or knows it better than Gerri, says it all.

I’m sure this is an unpopular opinion but I genuinely do think that Shiv cares for Tom, in her own fucked up way. Although at the dinner table at the end of season 2 she said that he’d be a good person to sacrifice, she later in that same episode talks to Logan and tells him “Just not Tom. For me, please.” and then Kendall is chosen as the sacrifice. Yes, she might’ve ignored his wants and needs at times, but she is also the reason he moved up from cruises to co-head of ATN. Plus the finale begins with her finally communicating her wishes to him, “Are you interested in a real relationship?” I don’t think her “love” for Tom really influenced her decision to vote yes, her vote was really just against Kendall, but it does inform her character. I think it also explains why she gets in the car with him, and why she puts her hand on his. But! the fact that it’s not a handhold is to show that this thing they have going on is precarious and Shiv really isn’t sure (the way she was at the beginning of the episode talking to him on the phone) that she’s doing the right thing being with him, and I guess neither is Tom. But really for the first time in their relationship, there’s a power-balance, maybe even tipped slightly to Tom.

Conor has to buy a woman; Kendall is clingy; Roman... 🙀; and Shiv, to me, purposely undermines the relationship with Tom --pushing and pushing until he finally cools toward her (becoming like her dad). Roman had told Tom to be more like Logan in order to tie it down with her.

What's so painful is that Tom is wholly unaware that she ever did that. It's all so sad.

The stuff about hooking up with others, hitting him during sex, verbal abuse, etc.... Shiv was trying to push Tom away bc she didn't feel worthy of the supportive and loving relationship he was initially offering. So she did everything to test him and to undermine it. When Tom spoke up, during the island picnic, she became terrified of losing him and swayed her dad to pick someone else. Logan did it for Pinky, plus he was already admiring Tom for some reasons, including the recent chicken incident. Shiv in a way picked Tom over Kendall at that point, just as she did in the end of the show.

The spoiled child attitude she literally beamed while telling the pleading Kendall “I just don’t want to (vote for you)” is one of the strongest moments of television drama I’ve ever seen. More than Kendall torturing Roman, it was her who provided the ultimate climax for the whole series, that hurtful, holier-than-thou, childish, petty, avoidant, entitled, vindictive, sadistic look in her face as she took pleasure in delivering the final blow to the brother she had cheerfully ‘anointed’ a few hours before. Shiv is the show's Cersei Lannister. She resents that she is overlooked in favor of the men, so she overcompensates by being Machiavellian to a fault. She undermines her brothers constantly because she has a complex about always being cut out and not being taken seriously. Marries Tom because she feels like she can control him. Logan calls her out on this and he was completely right. It worked for a few seasons until she got too forward about it, and Tom began to stand up for himself. While he Carmine seemed mostly dumb and in his own world ; he was chasing his dreams and staying out of the mobs buisness . While still holding some power just by his namesake. similar to connor. Both are kinda laughing stocks and are looked at as jokes . But while this is all true they came out on top, con had the best moments with logan, he had peace in the end as well; with everything. Carmine Jr was laughed at but survived the events of Sopranos and by the end of it ; he doesn’t even have enough power to be someone to knock down. He was i. the perfect spot in but not really. In enough to know n be in the game but not get his hands actually dirty.

I agree, to an extent.. I still feel bad for Connor because I don't think Willa ever loved him. She just stayed with him because he gave her security and gave her the ability to follow her dreams, but ... I don't know if she's actually happy with him.

FWIW my own personal interpretation is that Shiv definitely betrays Kendall because "if I can't have it no one can" initially (the look of waspish triumph on her face when she remembers about the waiter says it all), but it then becomes very real when Kendall lies about the death of the waiter and she realises that he either is or has become the kind of sociopath who would either lie about not being involved in someone's death just to get a powerful job or the kind of sociopath who would lie about being involved in someone's death to manipulate his siblings' trust and feelings of sympathy. She seems genuinely horrified when Kendall keeps begging her for her vote after that.

No way she was downgrading, being an underling to someone she hates more than tom lol ? She s petty as hell and miserable anyways, but would rather be miserable with him than Kendall. Weird girl .
