This is what I think people never get. Succession was always an unwinnable game where the kids would be given hope before they lost it all. And felt miserable throughout. It’s hell. It’s Sisyphus and his rock all over again. They make each other miserable. When dad isn’t in the picture, Shiv teases Roman about his weird sex stuff without malice. But when dad is around, she makes him out to be a criminal. When dad isn’t around, in the beach villa thing at the wedding, Kendall is offered support for the guy he killed by both siblings. But when they were in the light, they both felt okay publishing shit about Kendall’s terrible addiction. It’s just hell where they are always stuck torturing each other.
A lot of people got that it was unwinnable and that winning wouldn't help anyone. Unfortunately Game of Thrones ruined watching shows with people who have competing interest and access to power. Now the story itself isn't interesting. There has to be teams and theories of secret agendas and identities. I even saw someone theorize that Matsom was Logan's long lost son, and everyone will find out at the reading of the will. Or that Greg will be the successor CEO of one of the world's biggest media companies like a modern Bran Stark. They fell so in love with the contest that the missed everything the show was saying about the concentration of wealth in small, into incompetent hands.
Fantastic analysis. The callback to Sartre's play and the never ending nature of the torture they endure at each other's hands is truly genius. Thank you so much for your videos on this series.
The company was an outdated and doomed business. Who wants to take over Grandpa's newspaper company? It is mostly obsolete, but maybe you can make a sale if you convince enough people to make newspaper hats. It seems Logan did his heirs a favor by selling the company. All the siblings failed to realize they could win by losing.
One of the best videos about Succession I've seen. The one thing I disagree with is that I think they do love each other. "I really love you but I cannot f**cking stomach you" is an accurate representation of all their familial relationships. Their love for their father and theirs for them and their love for each other is all wrapped up in hate and jealousy and expresses itself in hurting each other, because that's what they were taught and the only thing they know, just like it was the only way Logan knew to relate to people who were important to him.
it isn't really love, just trauma bonding that they falsely glorify as "love". Narcissists of that degree don't and can't love. They are missing the alturistic "putting the needs of the loved one first" part because everything is transactional and power related with them.

Fantastic analysis! Kendall will undoubtedly stay in hell for the rest of his life. I forget where I read it, but I saw a comment saying that he will look back at these years as the most exciting and explosive years of his life. The period when he was so close to winning. How could he ever move on from losing the crown? He will stay haunted by his father's shadow no matter what he does until the day he dies.
Jesse Armstrong was actually saying this! That’s how he sees Kendall living out the rest of his life, doing dinky little startups, never forgetting what he could have had.
Just found this. Beautiful. Huis Clos is the perfect comparison to Succession. And, yeah, I was shocked about the Kendall infertility reveal. Wow. It explains so much.

It's interesting hearing other people's thoughts on a show this open to interpretation, because even when we disagree, it can give us insight. In a way I kinda saw the finale as a very happy ending and Shiv's decision as a lot more noble. I think she saw that Ken was on his way to become as toxic and abusive as Logan and that's why she pulled the plug. Tom got what he deserved as a suckup yes-man, now in the service of someone even more unstable than Logan and with a wife with every intention of usurping him. His only friend being Greg who has turned a lot more selfish and opportunistic recently. Roman is finally free other people. Finally free of seeking validation amd someone to abuse him, but also without anyone to carry that abuse onto. I think it's telling that he just leaves Waystar as fast as he can without looking back or throwing out a classic disgusting zinger. He has realized that this change is needed. Ken may look depressed, as he now lacks any purpose in life, but at the same time, I think the beautiful sunset signifies the beginning of something new to him as he is free to do anything he wants. You even hear that in the score, as the classic Succession theme is given a new ending. Also, there's dialogue hinting that Mencken will only get in the White House after years of legal batttles, if that even works.
Dude this was absolute poetry - thank you for creating this. So well done. I have watched so many succession recaps - best I've seen and its not close. Hope you blow up and looking forward to other analysis
Nowhere have I seen the writers clarify if Iverson is Kendall's biological son or not. It's clear that Sophie is adopted, but according to all information I can find, Iverson is Kendall's biological son. I think Logan didn't see Iverson as the true bloodline because he saw him as weak. And I think Roman uttered those sentences out of clear spite. But Iverson being "half-Rava, half- filing cabinet guy" might as well be a completely false allegation. I don't know why so many people assume that what Roman is saying is true. The characters on this show lie all the time. Other than that, great video. 👍

I really wonder how and why people make these kinds of videos?
What do you mean?

These videos are great to watch.
But, have you considered the time and effort it takes to research, edit, and analyse to create such videos?
And for what 550 subs?
Man, these video essays are really a labour of love.
@@raymeester7883 oh ok I definitely agree with you there lad. These videos take incredibly long to make, and you have to keep rewatching and doing your research to even make a good video. I respect everyone who analyzes shows like this
Welp, i just discovered a new UA-camr to follow. Amazing analysis!
Great video. You need more subs.
You'll probably blow up regardless
Thank you! I can only hope you're right 😁
