Everyone was incredible in 4x03, but Sarah's acting when she found out about Logan was phenomenal. She deserves to win her long awaited Emmy!!!
While she certainly deserves an Emmy, I would say the love and respect an actor earns through their performance is greater than any award and Sarah has certainly earned that. Same with Rhea Seehorn, she gave the performance of a lifetime only to lose everytime she was nominated
For me it was conor and kendall who stole it as it was both subtle and dramatic whereas sara was incredible but more on the side of the outburst.
@@sujalbageriya2619 it’s a shame that usually the most showy performances get the most attention from reward shows. Sets a bad precedent imo.
@@kaushikmahadev8635 alan ruck at least deserves his first nomination for sure!!! he captures connor's sadness so perfectly.
@@kaushikmahadev8635 long overdue outburst
its interesting how all the characters are nasty and vicious at various points in the show, but shiv is the one that seems to get the least empathy from the general audience- many seem to find her much more reprehensible than her brothers and the same kind of deep analysis think-pieces that have been written about them don't seem as common for her. it's a shame bc she's so fascinating and it's still rare to get to see complicated and morally grey female characters on screen
I know she's not a cartoon villain that you can easily dismiss and hate. She's as complex and as multilayered as everyone else on the show. You rarely see female characters allowed that kind of agency and moral complexity.
@@thandondlovu5392 Jessie even makes her look strikingly different--with her pink skin and red hair
Eh, I don't see it...especially for Roman.
That said, assuming what you're saying is true, I'd think it has more to do with Tom taking empathy away from her.
Because she has the least business experience and the most confidence
skyler white effect lol people just hate women that get in the way of the male characters dominating
Still in shock from the last episode
But I must say, Shiv's character by far had the most sincerely, relatable response to everything that happened at Connor's Wedding
Her holding her breath 😭😭😭
@@bhuffman1928 I got teary eyed seeing her in the last episode
I cheered for Conner going through with the wedding. And with no groomsmen present, mostlikely his brothers.
Overall he was smart. He saw what Dad did to his younger siblings realised the same was done to him and at some point accepted his fate, made the best of it and stole that once in a century actress away from the world.
I agree she did phenomenal, but I respectfully disagree that Shiv’s response was the most relatable; I think different people will find relatability in different siblings’ responses. Obviously not a big deal, just wanted to throw that out there! I agree this episode was shock-inducing!
@@kayla5356 I can see that. It's pretty remarkable that such a vile, villainous character can draw such an emotional response from everyone, regardless of what that response may be.
It's almost like if Emperor Palpatine died and people felt sad about it. It doesn't make sense because of the deeds he carried out, but the story and character were written in a way that you come to admire and love someone that anywhere else you would hate
At This point it is not just an observation.. this is detailed analysis
Yeah man. This channel is a gem. The best i ve ever seen (of this type) And i have seen a lot)
Shiv has a Dismissive Avoidant attachment style, and has lived and now worked in environments so hostile to vulnerability, that she probably doesn't even realize how often she ices out her emotions and takes opportunities to establish distance from Tom,who loves her in a way she's never gotten from her family.
she has some of the best acting for me, she can convey like 10 different emotions in 3 seconds and you understand each one. and she always stutters when she talks which just makes it feel more real to me lol
Shiv and Toms relationship is so brilliantly acted. The point where she found out Tom had boxed off all the divorce lawyers from her and she was started to be outdone by someone she thought was below her 👌 pissed but also half crying 😢
Not outdone by Tom. She got “mommed”; she knew and said that it was her father’s doing. That’s why it hurt.
He pulled a Tony Soprano.... He did the same thing to Carmella when they thought about divorce.
@@JoeyMartz My first thought too
@@JoeyMartzI had forgot about that completely.
Yes...out of all the siblings Shiv is the most emotionally guarded (maybe this is why she is the most "stable"of the Roy siblings) I think this is why she chose Tom as her partner because of her fear of abandonment and betrayal (Logan called her out for it)BUT he ended up betraying her too, since she never really "let him in" and recognized him as a person with his own ambitions (Tom isn't a saint either because part of him was there for the money and status of his wife...he chose power over her). I think her character is very sad but there is still hope...in season 4 I think we are seeing a more vulnerable Shiv
take the money and run, Shiv!!!!!!!!!!!
To be fair, Tom chose shiv first. He was willing to leave the money and chaos behind and just live with her on a ranch. But as you pointed out, she kept dismissing him so he went back to the money.
I love that you pointed to that hug between Kendall and Shiv. We as the audience know that Kendall really means it, but Shiv initially doesn't, but her face is so telling as she realizes and it's a rare vulnerable moment between main characters.
Such a beautiful scene 🥺
@@AGLadyBird Any time i can get sarah and jeremy on the screen together, it's gold 😭😩
Making her voice deeper and hitting a low register is also a very Elizabeth Holmes-girl bossy detail that I love.
I try that sometimes, too...
I did that too, as I had a young looking face and wanted to be taken seriously back when I was working in a corporate setting of mostly men.
I wonder how the casting process went with this role and who else was considered. For me, Sarah seems like a dark horse, and I'm constantly amazed by the depth she brings to the character in different scenarios. Anyone knows anything about her method? Man, I hope we'll be able to witness her range in many projects after Succession.
she was great in Predestination, the whole movie is held by her performance (and Ethan Hawke’s)
We know she’s not a method actor, unlike Jeremy. Mark Mylod said she was able to snap in and out during Connor’s wedding
@@cristinasada4819 sure! I meant a “method” like a process. She probably has some specific approach.
@@slonmish watching it!!! Thanks)
@@AnastasiiaPankina you’re welcome)
Sarah Snook is incredible. Shiv's reaction to her father's death gutted me the most, and that's saying a lot.
and pissed that her brothers didn't come get her sooner--they acted clueless, but in reality, they didnt even consider her until later
@@lynnhubbard844 Yeah I was surprised they didn’t grab her immediately
"Every other character tends to lie for business reasons; but with Shiv, we get to see her lie in her personal life, too" 9:37 Actually, we also see Roman and Kendall lie in their personal relationships as well. It's just not as expected of a woman to do so.
Gerrie, in her infinite wisdom, just flat out says she's not talking about her personal life
What do you mean it's not expected from a woman? Stop with that stereotype already. It's because her lies in personal life were shown more out of all the Roy children. Why? Because it's a major part of her character arc.
Please do Matthew Macfadyen! There is so much nuance to unpack in such a multi-layered performance.
"Shiv" is of course a nickname for Siobhan, but everyone essentially names her by an improvised prison knife... These characters are all beautifully written and acted, me having tears in my eyes when their hurt and grief occationally manifests itself.
not me, I was scrambling to keep up with the fast paced shock portrayed on all the characters
Sarah Snook needs to win Emmy for her acting in s4 ep 3 alone. It was like I was seeing someone I know grieve. It made me wo der if sarah had ever gotten that call of someone close's demise. That's how real it was.
Her first line was “I can’t have that”. Like a robot breaking down and throwing out random voice lines. Poor baby.
i’ve always found her character to be the most interesting, compelling and nuanced, from episode one of the first season. i grew up in manhattan “high society” in the 00’s and 10’s and her character is a very familiar and realistic archetype of that world. the conflict between the social/cultural progressivist tendencies of manhattan rich kids and their ruthlessly elitist and entitled worldview overall is very prevalent irl and perfectly encapsulated by shiv. sarah’s acting is just incredible too, she really brings the character to life and makes her a full person who’s genuinely authentic to that world.
Agreed I bounce back and forth between empathy for Shiv because she definitely faces sexism by her father and her world at large on top of the emotional abuse that she faced at the hands of her parents like her siblings however she's still just a selfish and cruel as the rest of them. Honestly I think she mirrors her father more so than her brothers.
I am not at all sure she IS selfish and cruel--I suspect she's just emulating and trying desperately to imitate male responses in order to stay in their game--damn season 4's last episodes may baffle us regarding her character
@@lynnhubbard844 Yes, I always had extra sympathy for her because of that. She was never considered for the business because she is a woman, and once Logan pulls her in she starts to pretend to be a "killer" and she imitates what she saw over her life from the men around her, she becomes worse and worse and she doesn't know how to play the game because she was never in it, to begin with. I don't say this to excuse her, but I think the show is about them acting like kids pretending to be adults all the time and Logan never letting them grow. Kendall pretending to be his dad, Shiv pretending to be what she considers a "man", and Roman acting like his father's "dog".
@@lynnhubbard844so you're implying that selfishness is exclussively owned by men? Let's not pretend like Shiv wasn't motivated by her own selfish needs. She's fascinating character but she's definitely not far from selfish.
The first thing i noticed about Shiv was her cold tone. Out of all people in the Roy family i felt most hurt when Shiv insults someone, her tone really sticks it to you.
Seeing her inner life simmering under the surface across everything that’s happened in her marriage to Tom, AND throughout Logan’s manipulation of her, is one of the more fascinating characters I’ve seen in a show. Sarah Snook does an incredible job portraying the tension between expressing vulnerability and avoidance over time.
Shiv is tied with Logan and Kendall as my favorite characters.
She really is a tragic figure. We see the downfall of her relationship with her father, because to me it always seemed like before Shiv got into the family business her relationship with Logan was good at least on the surface, which looking back is quite devastating to see.
Meh idk she always seemed pretty guarded, and like the only reason she had gone into politics was to recuse herself from all the family bullshit. Tom was supposed to be her little proxy before she was offered a spot. They have fucked up family issues going waaaaaaay back, including her with her dad even if she is daddys little girl.
Same she and Logan are the most fascinating characters to me
@@KD-ou2np I just mean they were on fine terms on a surface level vs. after getting into the business, and really after Shiv started working with Gill, the relationship totally tanked pretty quickly just all around. They for sure had family issues before, that was pretty clear in the therapy episode, but their relationship was guarded from being a total disaster. He dies while their relationship is a total disaster is what I mean. If he died in episode 2 of season 1 say, Shiv would have a lot less grief and regret seemingly.
@@KD-ou2np something tells me she wanted to be mommy's little girl
@@brandonwhite4992 wanting to belong
I love how the actor conveys her smugness, her entitlement and how she overestimates herself as she tries to match the men around her. It is an astonishing achievement to make these things visible but also truthfull. She is such an amazing avatar for women in these spaces. The actor is a genius and your analysis is very enjoyable to listen to as well 😺
shiv by name, shiv by nature. she's a concealed weapon.
can't wait to see what they do with the women post Logan episodes
@@lynnhubbard844 me neither. particularly gerri.
The first time I saw her was in Predestination. She plays a girl, a woman going through a transition as a man and really really nails it.
She impressed me in that role
Ah yes predestination
That movie messed me up
As someone who is writing a pilot/season of television, I cannot emphasize how much I’ve learned from your Succession series of videos, let alone your whole library!
Listen, I know it’s a secret until being aired, so please “don’t” tell us what it is about 😉😉
I came looking for a Shiv video, and as an Australian was equally shocked and not surprised by her origin ultimately. Just didn't expect it to be within an hour of this video's release! She's one of many A-grade actors from our humble country to venture to Hollywood. Thanks for doing Sarah Snook justice.
not only is she set apart from her male family environment, casting chose an actor with coloration very unique from them as well--the pink skin, red hair really stands out even though she dresses in power suits to try and blend in.
For me the most memorable act of hers is in season 4, part 3, when Tom comes to her, and she does need him esp now, but has to distance herself from him because he is there as he just lost his ally and protector. He loves her, but he is not there because of that. That one brief hug, and as she walks away from him is just ...so well done.
And at the end of the hug, as she turns to walk, she slightly pushes his arm away - and her face changes to “adversarial shiv”
She fully embodies the character at each moment
The fact there was no mention of Sarah Snook’s performance during Connor’s Wedding is testament to her incredible portrayal of Shiv Roy
What are you on about? On reddit, theres a plethora of praises for her acting in that ep
@@Vfxbenlee I think they mean in this video, which mightve been put together before that episode aired.
@@LeVidocq correct
@@LeVidocq yes, other videos that talked about this episode, got busted for spoilers
There are a million tiny looks from the actors in this series and cataloging them is a challenge. You're doing great work-
4:34 "this avoidance stems from being hirsched too many times before" Greg would be proud of the subtitles there
I’m not teamShiv but I love Sarah so much. Her performance in ep3ss4 is one of the best I’ve seen lately. It’s been 3 days and I’m still moved whenever I think of Shiv crying. She is definitely going to get her Emmy this year as a lead actress.
Such a brilliant in depth look at Sarah’s performance, the entire series is brilliantly cast.
Yes, Shiv is such a wonderfully acted and written character and it’s really cool to see a video genuinely trying to analyze and understand her
How do these actors master these micro aggressions and subtle body language? Amazing.
that thing she does when she feels slighted or pissed is just perfection. I don't know how she does that with her face but I love it.
I absolutely love these analyses, it really makes you appreciate the acting in a way you don't usually do.
for me, Sarah and Matthew are arguably the best actors on the show in terms of all the subtleties they bring to their performances. They are a force of nature together and Shiv and Tom. I hope Sarah can bring home her well earned Emmy
Never stop succession analysis mate, it’s a pleasure to watch
This was a brilliant analysis and breakdown of her acting with scalpel-like precision. Her nuanced and constantly shifting persona is stunning. Your assessment is spot on: I never know if she needs to be slapped or hugged, or both.
Such a brilliant actress
I could watch you dissect Succession all day. I was pleasantly surprised that you dropped a new video just today, and it started me going back and rewatching all of your previous Succession content. You’ve got a great eye, and you offer genuinely interesting insight into the actors, their characters, and the plot of this outstanding, once-in-a-lifetime show. Thank you!
"I'm the smartest person in the room and everybody should listen to me." I think that's shiv's biggest personality trait, whether she is right or wrong. That is what makes her my favourite character.
It’s easy to route for her despite how trrrible she can be
Because In hurting Tom, she clearly is choosing to hurt herself- isolating herself and not allowing herself to be vulnerable and therefor depriving herself of the comfort that could come of that from Tom.
she picked up on Tom's insincerity, waffling
yeah that's why in the episode 6 of season 4 it just amazes me how she let herself be vulnerable in front of him when he found her scheduling her grieve at least in that scene
I honestly don't understand how you don't have 10x the subs, this is one of the best, most consistently great channels going right now
12:11 probably my favorite moment in the entire series. love, love this hug, this scene and how Sarah portrays such deep emotions in just a few seconds. amazing.
like she's got all the motions compartmentalized
I mean, emotions (edit)
Amazing video as usual! I cannot WAIT for your analysis/reaction for episode 3.
For me, your narrative, observations and score, compliment this masterpiece of a series perfectly. Thank you
Wow this breakdown is incredible. Sarah is obviously brilliant but the little details she adds that are highlighted here…just wow.

Dude I’ve been watching all your Succession videos today, I love your analysis! Keep it up.
I have to admit, I'm one of those dense people who just enjoys a great show without fully understanding why I enjoy it so much. Vids like this make me enjoy them even more by pointing out the things I responded to without noticing them!
This is such a well observed analysis. Loved this video!
Personally Succession is one of my fav shows of all time. It's not just Shiv or Logan, every character is beautiful played even those supporting roles. A masterpiece!
Shiv was my favorite character very closely followed by Tom.
Their scenes together were incredible
I love Shiv. She's so INTERESTING and magnetic. And dangerous!

Fantastic analysis again🙏🏻 thanks for your videos.
Such incisive analysis. Cogent and pitch-perfect, commensurate with excellence being analyzed.
Thank you.
I needed this video from you. Thank you.
Really sharp and poignant character essays, both Logan's and this one are quite moving. Great job! Hoping to see your takes on the rest of the cast, especially Roman. (I'm pretty sure these are time-consuming to put together, but I hope there's more planned).
what a brilliant analysis. thank you.
Enjoyed that film - thanks. Agree they are all so stunted in how to deal with their emotions - you've picked out moments I had forgotten. Shiv's relationship with her mother was also portrayed very well I thought. Cheers.
wondering if mom's coming BACK!?
Spot on interpretation. I like this presentation a lot. The "click" to a still photo is a nice touch.
This is a great breakdown of how much effort and skill Sarah puts into her performance
I’d love to see your take on Kieran’s acting also. I think he’s a master!
What a great analysis! Probably one of the best I've seen.
I love this series and the kids so much and Shiv is one of my favorites. They are all so broken and damaged that I can't help but feel sorry for them 🥺
Oh and the last episode, damn I still can't finish processing it. If we already thought the performances were amazing now... What can we say? From another world.
I just realized she was the lead in Predestination, I remember being completely blown away by the performance way back when I watched it! She's soooo talented, if you haven't seen that definitely check it out!
omg! i had thought it was her! amazing
Yep. I saw that movie.
Just started watching your videos and gotta be honest, I'm a psychologist and you do a great job doing this character studies
why am I sobbing?
cuz you are a real human!!?
Thank you for these brilliant character studies. Makes me appreciate the actors even more, really sad to see the show end.
boy, won't the remaining episodes be fascinating without Logan controlling everyone!!!!!!!!
Shiv is my favorite even though she’s awful 😩. She really sells the idea that maybe being the favorite isn’t such a good thing.
Logan wanted to fire Gerrie; he replaced wives; he never let his daughter feel safe in his world either
For me she was never the favorite it was just Logan taking advantage of her vulnerability moments.
Very well put together
Excellent job of both actress and analyst 👏
great analysis, man. congrats! shout out to Brazil

She has perfected Shiv's character with so many layers and micro expressions through the 4 seasons that its impossible not to be emotionally invested in her journey, even if she shows the worst traits coming out on a lot of situations. In a cast thats really strong and on their A game all the time, she is the Standout for me.
super appreciate your attention to detail!
Great analysis I love Sarah's performance and she's so beautiful too
Ahhh, I love these “how (actor) defined (character)” videos. Please do them with movie characters too! I’ll make you cookies
One thing I like about Shiv, is how downright amazing Sarah looks at all times. Proud of Tom becoming able to break away from that nice Roy wagon.
Another Great video!
What a beautiful analysis. Such an elegant performance. I think this is a very common coping mechanism for ppl, fearing vulnerability.
That was well done. Thank you.
