The best part of this if he remembers is that back in episode 11/12 when you first met Greed and his crew at the devils nest, he asked why the chimeras couldn’t be anything more dangerous like a lion or gorilla. Well here’s the chimeras you unknowingly predicted

A little "fun" fact about the Ed scene, it is said that with the scene of removing this metal thing out of his body the author of fullmetal alchemist wanted to show how painful delivery of her first child was for her.
I didnt confirm it but chapter with this scene came out few months after her giving birth so it may be true.

Love the reaction at the whole Golden Being ... back when Mustang sent Edward back east to take them to the desert where they hid Maria Ross - They talked about how in Amestris Alchemy was according to legend brought in by a Sage from the East .... and Alchemy was brought to Xing where it became Alkahestry by a Sage from the West ....
And what is West of Xing ... and east of Amestrys? well Xerxes ..... and from what we saw last episode Hoenheim is slightly older than the destruction of Xerxes ... where only 2 beings survived one wandering East one West ....
Also that moment with Ed where he heals himself ... still gives me shivers

Just to clear up some of the questions you had this episode!
It's safe to say that Hoenhiem is around 400 to 450 years old, since that's also around how long ago Father and the other Homunculus have been carving the crest of blood they've mentioned a few times already. If you remember earlier in the series Edward and Fu shared a similar story of a golden haired man coming to their repsective countries and introducing alchemy (Father) and alkahestry (Hoenhiem).
As for the two Philosopher Stones, the more crystal looking stone that Kimblee has is the original from the Ishvalan War, while the spherical one is one that Envy gave him after being released from Prison, meaning the spherical one is the stronger of the two.
The footprints you mentioned, from what I believe, are supposed to be from Scar's group since they went into the mines to cross under the mountains. The footprints might've survived because the inside of the mine is lower than the ground level so the blizzard didn't cover it, but I'm not sure.
I'm also not 100% sure on this one, but as for your question about Al, I think you're pretty much spot on. It was explained that Ed and Al have a connection due to entering the Portal of Truth together. Since their souls are basically tangled together, and because Ed is the one that bound Al's soul, if Ed were to die at any point I don't think the connection between Al's soul and the armor would hold.
    I hope this helps! ^^

As a norwegian, i can confirm that the footprints do make sense. The buildings provide cover from the sideways movements of a snowstorm, so the snow cover in a street that tight would build up over a much longer period. As an example of this, think of how they stepped out into snow about a meter deep (~3ft for you imperials) because there is nothing there to stop it from accumulating at full pace. Day old tracks may be diminished in a street like that but someone like kimblee, practiced in tracking his victims in Ishval would be capable of tracking the remnant tracks. As for Al, he split off from Ed, heading the opposite direction though the wilderness in the direction of fort Briggs so none of those tracks would have been his, they were winry's group's tracks.

Kimblee has a good point when he says that Ed is making everything more difficult when choosing to not kill him, demonstrating the consequences by dropping the tunnel on him.
Ed also agreed that Kimblee is probably right and still chooses to fight on, patching himself up with grit and intelligence and unintentionally gaining some new allies. It is such a good showing of heroic virtues that we don't see enough in storytelling.

Ed's body is essentially the buffer between Al's Soul and the Suit, yes. The seal that binds Al's soul to the suit is made of Ed's blood, and uses Ed's life force essentially as a medium. This is partially why he's short. His body is supporting both his own and Al's body that is beyond the Gate of Truth. If Ed were to die, Al's Soul would probably snap back to his body, and in essence, be dead.

As someone who lives in a snowy region with lots of snow and blizzards. I can tell you there are situations where a storm doesn't affect snow in some areas where previous knows already fallen. Sometime one snow fall will come from one direction and a different storm will come from a different direction leaving snow from the previous fall untouched especially when it's in a fairly protected area like the bottom of the mine shaft. A gentle snow fall can drop snow straight down to the bottom but a storm especially with horizontal winds will just push new snow over the top of the shaft without anything getting in.

Kimblee was following the tracks of the other group into the mines where they escaped. In a blizzard, you can have high wind, high snowfall, or, one or the other. The blizzard in the show didn't really seem to drop a lot of snow and was very windy. It is quite possible that little to no snow at all fell into the hole of the shaft due to the winds. I live in the mountains and have my entire life. Snow does some weird shit and comes in all forms. When it comes to snowstorms the wind is the worst, and despite how frantic it may look in terms of obscuring the view, a lot of times the snow blowing in the air can mostly be stuff that was already on the ground being kicked up again if it was fresh.
The flat philosopher stone was the one Kimblee got in Ishval, the round one was the new one given to him by Envy for the mission, so he still technically has the freshest stone, though again since they are unpredictable, there is no telling when one will run out from use. The big explosion is Kimblee's specialty remember. He's the crimson alchemist but his forte is definitely using explosives. As Mustang so aptly demonstrated with a simple transmutation of water into hydrogen gas, you don't need much to make a boom, and with a stone in hand, he can basically make a kaboom whenever and however he wants.
There is a bit of entwining going on with Ed and Alphonse. Their working theory is that their spirits became a bit entangled during the transmutation attempt they did to bring their mother back. Not to mention Ed used his own blood to form the seal to bond Al's soul to the metal. It could easily stand to say that it is Ed's own will and life force that keeps Al bound to the body even despite the armor's attempts to reject him and his body tugging at his spirit. Not many things are going to stand a chance of success against Ed's force of will.

    • @IceAokiji303
      @IceAokiji303 10 місяців тому +1

Additional thing about Kimblee's alchemy and title:
In Japanese the title reads 紅蓮の錬金術師, Guren no Renkinjutsushi. The 紅蓮(Guren) part, while sometimes used as a word for a bright red colour, is also just literally "crimson lotus". And the crimson lotus has sometimes been used as a symbol of fiery explosions in art.
So it's essentially a roundabout poetic way of calling him "Explosion Alchemist".

You forget Olivier's philosophy, and Briggs in general. She trusts that her troops are strong enough and smart enough to not let themselves get sacrificed, and if they do, well then they were too weak to be good soldiers anyways. She's not worried about them, she's only worried about her country getting sacrificed, which is why she's in the heart of the enemy, gathering info.

    • @SnowyWolborg
      @SnowyWolborg 8 місяців тому +2

That's the funny thing. Central might be the most important city in the country, but the best fighters are not necessarily stationed there. Fort Briggs has the best defensive capabilities in the entire military, because it has to. They're not just border patrol soldiers, they are on guard against a country that is multiple times their size. In order to invade Central, one would need to successfully defeat either the North/West/South/East, all of which have soldiers who have experience fighting on the frontline. And in a world where there is no aerial combat, that kind of ground invasion is almost impossible.

the footprints were in snow, under stuff. so new snow couldn't fall on top.
Kimbly was were Ed fell into when he was tracking Winry and their footprints into the mines. its what makes this show go from good to great, the attention to detail.
edit - it was in a hole, so it had four walls around it blocking 90 percent of the snow storm, it had the very top of the mine (the crane looking thing) blocking more, and it had multiple canopies down in the hole. once snow has fallen, it doesn't suddenly get weightless it'll spread around. I think you were thinking it was on level ground with a single canopy, which would be ridiculous to expect to find footprints there, but that is not the case here.
I hope my aimless rambling was able to help lol

Yes, it was previously stated that Al & Ed's souls are entangled due to the human transmutation rebounding/going through the portal of truth together & Ed being the one to bind Al's soul to the Armour. This is also allowed Ed's body to provide nutrients to Al's.

I think the simultanously of these scenes are a good narrative tool to put emphasis on a bad situation for the main cast

  • @powersthetiddygoblin

Not gonna lie, this episode scares the shit out of me when I first saw it.
    - It would take hours of burning/ laying dynamite out in heat for it to dry out. It would be like trying to dry off sand: Eventually it will, but the fastest way (fire) would just keep going out over and over to do so. You could light and potentially burn the fuse, but once it hit the wet gunpowder it would just go out and then you have no safe way to detonate it again.
    - "Sometimes killing someone isn't as hard as letting them live" is such a raw line and it's so true. One of my favorites. I love the juxtaposition of Ed thinking you can rationalize and/or make others submit to resolve anything, and Miles being the one to say "but a bullet ends all the problems in a second."
Kimblee echoing the sentiment is great too because Ed has essentially given himself a handicap against opponents. It may work for Batman, but Ed isn't Batman.
    - Xerxes fell several hundred years ago. If you recall, back when Ed went to meet Ross in the desert, he and Fuu talked about how the last survivor of Xerxes was fabled to have brought both alchemy and alchehestry to their countries; named the Eastern and Western Sage by both. Now that we know what actually happened, we now know there are 2 survivors of Xerxes. And since Father founded Amestris and doesn't recognize alchehestry, that he must have went West, and Hoenhiem must have gone East first based on the Golden Being description. So each one is responsible for 2 different types of alchemy across the lands!
The golden hair and eyes refers back to my comment on the last video about how Xerxians all had these physical traits, and thus Ed and Al are the last of a line of an entire race.
    - The "aim carefully" is in reference to not only wind of the snowy terrain, but also to not make harsh movements that will draw attention to them. Not only are they wary of Kimblee, but they're worried about Ed doing something stupid to try and save Kimblee.
    - Love the dynamite thing coming back! Even if it doesn't light, throwing ammonia at animals with sensitive noses is harsh lol.
    - Kimbley had the shard in Ishval, so the new one was the sphere. The shard was the one Heinkel (the lion) picked up.
    - Turns out Ed was right that he was connected to Al's soul. As soon as Ed is potentially mortally wounded, he stopped supplying nutrients and energy to Al's body temporarily and it started pulling on Al to become whole.
    - Ed shortening his life to save it in the moment is also such a cool concept. And the fact that there's real consequences for giving your murderous opponents an advantage against you is so refreshing. There's an actual permanent effect of of not killing Kimblee and letting him wound Ed: his life is literally shortened, and he may have even risked Al in the process unintentionally. It's so good. Vic Mignonga is also so good at expressing the pain from that transmutation.
    - The footprints are supposed to be that they happened during the storm, thus there was still indents where they had been. If you've ever had a heavy snow, when you walk through it, you leave a footprint often several inches deep. And often the next morning after it's snowed again, you'll see that there weren't enough inches of snowfall to completely fill in the holes so there's a dip of a foot shape lightly in the snow still. Or contrary wise, when the snow starts to melt, the footprint areas are the first to show solid ground.

To further your point about the character building in this show, the chimeras. In most shows, they would be the generic mooks that only exist to get their butts kicked by the protagonists.
Instead, we're shown that they're just people doing a job and are far from 100% evil. They have lives, families, hopes, dreams, and regrets; they don't simply blindly follow orders and can change their minds.

Ed made a hypothesis when he dug up his and al's failed human transmutation.
That when they transmuted their blood as a template for their mom's soul. The transmutation was linked.
So Al lost his whole body into the portal, but Ed was linked to Al.
Hence why Al wasn't rotting like Barry the chopper in the portal for 4 years, skin and bone but he is alive. Ed is keeping Al alive due to their link. It's why he sleeps so much and is very short for his age. He is literally surviving for 2.

This scene is chilling and painful to watch, the combination of music, images and dialogue make it perfect. No matter how many times you watch it, it's still just as impressive.
And now that I've seen it complete in the English dub I can say that Edward's voice is fascinating, he does a wonderful job handling all the emotions and nuances that the scene should have. The first scene that made me say this was the one in chapter 21.
    "The price of mercy".
When people ask me why Ed is my favorite character I always show this scene. Having compassion on your enemies, forgiving life, choosing life, will not always be the easy path, many times it will be even more problematic, more painful, but it is the path we have taken, the only thing left is to face the consequences.
Ed knows that the price of mercy is his own life, and he is willing to accept it, he knows that his idealism and his philosophy will have consequences, and yet he decides to remain true to himself. Many will call it naivety, stubbornness and even idiocy, but in the end it's just a way of life.

There is nothing explicitly stated connecting the Elric brothers but there’s lots of circumstantial evidence indicating there is. Ed even made a theory that their intermingled blood when they attempted human transmutation connected them due to those circumstances. So it can be assumed that the weakening of Ed’s life force caused the soul-pull episode that Al experienced.

Dynamite is nitroglycerine and sawdust or clay. The binder keeps it stable and prevents it from exploding at the slightest touch.
It's just as dangerous wet or dry, and old dynamite is very dangerous because it starts to sweat pure nitroglycerine.
Then too, nitroglycerine freezes at just 13 degrees C, which means that the crystals will be very sensitive to impact.

At this point you're supposed to have already understood Kimbly's alchemy, but the anime gives you very little/few ints about Kimbly and his alchemy. However, from what you saw of him in Ishval and from how he was enjoying the sound of Lab 5 explosion, you can understand that his entire alchemy is focused on explosions and explosives. In the first FMA anime it was a bit more clear, they even show Kimbly using alchemy on Scar's face, making his skin explode in that X mark on his face and creating that scar.
Also yes, definitely! Full Metal Alchemist does an amazing thing: it creates a rule, and it stuck with it. Transmutation require energy? Good. Ed want to use his own life force/soul/body energy for the transmutation? He will need to pay that price entirely. This is what makes the difference between a well written opera and a messed-up opera. Take Naruto: the first part is an amazing fight/tecniques' manual manga. Then, starting with Shippuden, it creates tons of retcon and breaks tons of his own rules, between impossible power levels and infinite chakra on tons of people. The same example can be done between Harry Potter magic system, which is totally messed up and with zero limitations, and Inheritance Cicle magic system, with a lot of rules that the books never break.

I think every episode of this show is great, even if there's not happening so many things.
I have to admit that the scene where Ed gets hurt, shocked me the first time I watched the show.

Not sure how old Ed and Al's dad is but he's old enough for Xerxes to have become ruins and for people to now know a lot about it anymore. I think Ed is connected to Al cause it was his blood that was used to bind Al's soul to the armor. There are lots of anime that deals with characters being forced to kill and how they react in different ways but they depend on what kind of show you're watching.
You really like FMA now which is awesome. I recommend though listening to an OST from the FMA 2003 series, it's title is "Bratja" (Brothers) and it's sung in russian. I wish it was used in Brotherhood but I heard copyright stuff might've been the reason why it wasn't used.

Their philosophy also lends credit to why they quickly switch sides since Amestrian people operates on The Law of Equivalent Exchange, especially those in the military that they would quickly return a favor and scorn those who take advantage of others.
We also must note that the Chimera Soldiers shown were also forced to be part of this conspiracy, they're not like Kimblee who are willing to usher in the chaos and conflict. So the Chimera Soldiers have little loyalty to begin with, add that to their treatment of being expendables, and they can flip on Central and become their enemies by helping the protagonists.
