So glad to see someone else start giving this show the attention it deserves and helping blazing the trail on the reaction side of YT! Everyone should be talking about this show, it's fantastic!
This show has flown under the radar and I didn't expect you to react to it! It's such a great show, certainly the best one I've seen this year! The fandom has been screaming for season 2. There's no comic history of this show. The creators and writers, Amber Noizumi and Michael Green are a couple and they came up with the idea for the series after nicknaming their biracial child 'blue-eye samurai' for her blue eyes. Then they thought about what if this was an actual character? And so the idea of the show was born 😃
I've said it before, but I really appreciate how they attempt to keep the characters in the show from acting too anachronistically. Taigen may very well be sincere in his feelings for Akemi, but of course he's gonna celebrate his "engagement" at 17th century Hooters with arm candy and the boys. Even Swordfather, for all of his cool old guy vibes, steadfastly refuses to allow his apprentice swordsmith to admit her gender to him. I also appreciate that Taigen wasn't a complete pushover. He gave as good as he got, even WINNING their first engagement with steel. Nobody forced the samurai to fight with a handicap, and had he seriously wanted their duel to end in death, the show would have ended there. Our leading lady was very lucky to have gotten the chance to do her Goku disrobe for a steamrolling round two.
It'sn ot that he refused to allow the apprentice to reveal her gender. He tried, in his way, to make her stay. Either accept yourself fully, and live here, or don't, follow the revenge, and thus, live as you sold yourself as. If you want your revenge, then stop trying to build something here. It was more a lesson than anything else. Pretty sure he dosen't care one way or the other about her gender.
Loved this series, glad to see you reacting to it! Blue Eye Samurai is an original story, not from any IP be it comic, manga, book or otherwise. Love the animation but its the characters and characterization that really did it for me. You have just begun your journey, it only gets deeper as we go! Enjoy.
yeah was going to say it was written by Michael Green and his wife, Amber Noizumi Michael Green also wrote and co-wrote the screen plays for Logan, Alien: Covenant, Blade Runner 2049 and Murder on the Orient Express.
Good series choice! The thing with male anime protagonists (usually for teen/kid main characters in shounen), is that they are usually voiced by women. So, some anime watchers heard the voice and assumed they did the same to capture that anime feel. So the reveal at the end sort of worked as a little meta twist for people familiar with shounen.
I agree with the other posters here. The show is amazing and I'm glad you chose to react to it. It's easily on my short list of best animations this year. I'm honestly amazed it hasn't been covered as much as it should be by other reactors.
I can't believe you're watching this series! Your channel looks like my own list to watch. (Arcane, Vox Machina, Firefly, The Expanse, Battlestar Galactica and Avatar). I hope you enjoy this first season as much as I do.
I watched all of Season 1 in a single sitting. I went into it not expecting to get absolutely HOOKED like I did and was up all night, even with work the next day! Since then I’ve watched the whole thing twice more. Easily my favorite new show this year.
😋Today I am making a pork shoulder roast with onions and Yukon Gold potatoes that will boil in pork fat and homemade garlic butter - all to be cubed, stirred together again, cooled, and later pan fried as pork/potato hash perhaps with scrambled eggs and cheese. 😃 Thanks to you and Ringo for keeping me company while I do.
i loved this i watched every episode in 1 night and o my god this woman has been through so much shit in her life 7 more episodes of excitement shock and horror i see in your future if you continue
This show is certainly on my ((very-very-verrry))short list of 'Absolutely Must-See' shows! I'm so glad you're watching and reacting to it! The animation alone is 'Next Level' ((...if not beyond, in my opinion...)) And thus far, the story is a singular one, 'damn well told!
Loved the series (watched it twice last week) and loved your reaction to this episode! It’s great that you love Ringo so much; he can be a little annoying at times, but he’s also just so wholesome that even that comes off as more endearing than anything else. Swordfather is an absolute delight any time he’s on screen. Your reaction to the dojo fight was pretty much exactly the same as mine was. “Oh, oo, [dumbfounded shock], ah!” 27:10 “When you hit teeth, they don’t come out full root.” Very true, and reminds me of a funny moment that happened in the “Introduction to Dental Anatomy” course in my first semester of DLT school: Prof was asking if anyone knew how to distinguish between the first and second maxillary premolars. I said to look at their roots, because the firsts are split while the seconds are singles. He replied to that with: “Accurate, but patients aren’t usually accommodating enough to let you get that kind of a view.” Apologies for the tangent. I ramble when I’m tired. Anyway, great reaction, again! I’ll be subscribing to make sure I catch the rest of the series.
i am SO GLAD YOU’RE WATCHING THIS!!!!! you’re genuinely my favorite reactor on here- you’re so smart and so attentive!! you understand the deeper layers of a story so much quicker than others do, you pick the story apart and point things out others may not notice- and it’s very satisfying to watch
What a great choice of series to watch and react to. I watched the whole thing I think in about two days or so, It's a bit more adult but it's so beautifully drawn & animated and I loved the intertwining storylines. I really shouldn't be surprised by now, you seem to keep picking a lot of my favourite series.
I was just predicting that this show is going to hit a wave of popularity as people discover it. I can't believe it popped up on your channel so soon after that! Is the time now?!
Oh hell yeah!! You're a rockstar for reacting to this. Not enough people are and it's a masterpiece. Hopefully more people will start reacting and it will get a season 2!
This show was the biggest surprise for me this year. Never heard of it, saw it, clicked on it out of curiosity, didn't even watch the trailer. I like to watch like the first 10 minutes of something and see if it seems compelling to me. I binged through this whole show in 2 days, and it was fantastic. One season per "white devil" would be great, I'd be up for 3 more seasons. Loved your reaction, as always.
So glad to see one of the reactors I subscribe to reacting to this. Part of me wants to rewatch it, but I don’t have the time. This will be like a mini-rewatch.
Love to see you reacting to this series. It's honestly one of the best animated series I've seen in a while and it deserves way more attention. Can't wait for episode 5!
A thing to know about the Taigen scene in the Tea house, iirc, it was "normal" for samurais to relax with geishas and all, as they had to maintain a very noble facade all the time, which is madening. Its not Taigen openly cheating on Akemi, more like him taking a night to the bar. It was seen as okay back then if I remember correctly.
It makes me so happy that you're watching Blue Eye Samurai. I'm obsessed with this show, and firmly belive that it's a must see... period. Enjoy the ride, this show gets BONKERS. And violent. Oh, so deliciously violent!
pre-watch: FRICK YES!!! I loved this series and binged the crap out of it.. twice! I am overjoyed that you are watching this! This is up there with Arcane as a superbly written show post-watch - this is entirely new (no comic/manga etc). I really enjoyed a theme put forward in this episode - "purity" isn't a good thing- the swordmaker talked about how impurities (in right amounts) make the steel stronger.. And notice that none of the characters are "pure", and each time we meet a character obsessed with purity in some form, they are shown to be in the wrong :) I am very much looking forward to your reactions - and your commentary!
Yeah, Like you, I went with girl when I heard the voice and saw the shape of the face. Living 400 years ago, things were very different. Lots of friends have been recommending this and I am pleasantly surprised at this. Thought the episodes were going to be a half hour but if they're all this length, I really look forward to it. The style is really nice and characters are pretty fun.
wow this was crazy timing, i was literally looking up blue eye samurai reactions earlier today. looking forward to your reactions Edit: at 26:14 yea i despise when shows do that like why would i willingly want to watch spoilers
Thia might be my top 1 series this year. I had low expectations with this series but I started watching it it's just breath taking. The animation, the quagerphy simply beautiful
It's probably the best anime I've seen on Netflix so far, but I think it was written in English instead of translated from Japanese, and the English-speaking cast is the original cast, which makes a difference. The realistic portrayals of racism, sexism, and ableism were also surprising, not a pleasant surprise, but it's a detail that lends a certain authentic feel to the story that might otherwise have made it more difficult to suspend my disbelief, which is welcome.
So excited to see you react to this. This was one of my favorite shows of 2023 and is right there with Arcane in my opinion. Can’t wait to see you take this journey!
So glad you're watching this. As someone who doesn't normally watch these kinda adult animated shows, I had no expectations and this freakin blew me away
I like the soft magic that's in this world. Hitting a small iron piece like that shouldn't let you start a wick. The healing is incredible, and the stamina. The meteor metal, and durability and sharpness of the swords in general. But there's no fireballs, or lightning fingers, so it's mostly realistic.
It's an original story written by a woman who is biracial, a lot of her own personal experience growing up half Japanese written in the story. The voice actors are fantastic and they also have a great animation team that worked with professional fight coordinators. They spent a lot of work on trying to make accurate fight scenes, so the action is brutal but amazing.
King Tutankhamun had a knife made from a meteorite, placed on his body inside the bandages. I binge watched this, which I rarely do of anything. The fight scenes are just next level, so gorgeous and smooth.
If i remember correctly from watching the History Channel the first metal blades forged where from meteorite until people learned how to process steel.

I just found and watched this series! What a gem to find, at least to me. My goodness, when you said you have been in dentistry for 20 years I thought you were in your late 20's. Anyway, great series.
This show is so fucking good! The cast and animation is incredible. I love in this show that it’s the samurai’s whiteness that makes them other and not the fact their Japanese, like it is for so many biracial people in western stories. I really hope it gets a second season but I don’t think it will.
This show is exquisite in every way, although Netflix certainly gives the TV-MA rating a work out. What I’m looking forward to, however, is watching the cornucopia of angry glares and scowls it’s certain to evoke! Show’s just teeming with pricks to hate on.
Im a big fan of these kinds of stories and tales from Asia! This show when I started it and finished it within a week had me in a chokehold. The amount of storytelling and lore they put into the 1st season is phenomenal cant wait for the future of this show!! BIG FAN!!
This is the first thing to tickle my brain in a similar way that Arcane did.
The creators of the show are a mixed-race couple, Michael Green and Amber Noizumi. Their daughter was born with blue eyes and that's part of where the idea came from. 😁
“I don’t know what I was expecting but it was so much better” - big same, best show I’ve seen all year, absolutely mind-blowing!
