One of the things I love about the movie is the casting of these two and how perfectly they suit their characters. In the movie, Alfred Borden is clearly the better magician and Robert Angier is the better presenter. I feel this reflects the actors in real life. Christian Bale is the better actor, but Hugh Jackman is the greater showman. Simply put, Jackman hosted the Oscars and Bale won an Oscar.
It's interesting how Christian Bale, being known as a really hardcore, intense method actor, actually has a more academic style of figuring out his character's narrative, while Hugh Jackman seems to immerse himself a bit more readily when not on set.

Probably because at the time this movie was made, neither of them were that big in terms of career. This was before The Dark Knight and this was before Hugh Jackman was considered an A-Lister.
Christian Bale was nominated twice for his role in Empire Of The Sun in 1987, and nominated 4 times for his role in American Psycho. He was big before The Dark Knight.
AAD and Streamtrooper, check Christian Bale's filmography on imdb. He was NOT nominated for an Oscar until 2010 (The Fighter). Neither was he nominated for a Golden Globe or a BAFTA before that time. He was NOT an A-Lister when The Prestige was made. He had only been nominated for minor awards. Also, when The Prestige was made, Hugh Jackman was only about 5-6 years into his Hollywood career. I am a big fan of Hugh Jackman, and in my opinion, he didn't really become an A-List actor until after The Prestige was made.
Well, abt Bale : you can say Bale is underrated only by idiots, who have no idea what real acting is about. Hint : it is not about being loud and shiny, and having ''cool lines'' (so majority of superhero movies/actors today). Its about subtlety. Schools in acting are different, Bale is a minimalist, but a brilliant minimalist. And he obsessively cares for details. You can see all of this in Prestige as well. I absolutely adore him as an actor. He is kind of underrated by the public opinion (but not by everyone either, coz he also has many, many fans& very loyal) & exactly coz he is very private & not like typical A lister actor nowadays - prostituting on television non-stop. He doesn't do talk shows like Kimmel, Colbert, Latterman at all, no scandals in private life, with 1 woman more than 17 yrs already & every person who met him says, he is one of the most down to earth people ever. And if you follow him closely, thats exactly who he is&thats why I love him even more. The guy is real actor, no tabloids, no distractions, just enormous passion & dedication for his craft. He once said he wants to be ''an actor not a star'' and it's so, so true! For example for me, Clooney is a star, but he is not great actor at all. Yes, he had few very good roles, but not great, yet most ppl would say, Clooney is such a great actor etc. Bale is still not a star type, even after Batman - I mean he was a star at one time, after Batman, but he simply didn't wanted it - if he wanted it, he would go&do all this talk shows etc to maintain this status, but all he wanted is to be an actor & for me he is great actor. He doesn't just go for big Hollywood flicks, his choices of roles are very original& I love the fact that he is still such an outsider, despite being A lister - it's very rare thing. Now, as for his own habitat, the movie industry - Bale is very highly rated. He is def very respected by his fellow actors, he got Oscar - one of the most deserving Oscars in history imo, I mean, he was better Dicky than real Dicky in The Fighter, brilliant performance, so yeah, he got the Oscar &many other great actors still don't have it. Plus great actors talk very highly of him, for example De Niro visited him on set of American Hustle and was very impressed. So he is not underrated in the business overall, coz filmmakers/actors know their craft&they know how great Bale is. Of course he was underrated by the business more than once & while this happens to every actor from time to time, ignoring his role in American Psycho was shocking - let's be honest this was marvelous, brilliant performance, the best portrayal of pure psychopath/narcissist on the big screen imo. Yet he didn't even get the nomination for Oscar as he should have. But this happened, because the novel & the movie was ahead of its time - brilliant diagnosis of yuppie culture, Wall Street & modern society (years, almost 2 decades before Wolf of Wall Street) , and oh look, in 2018 Patrick Bateman (only dumber that the one in the movie) is in the White House. But idiots : critics& media at that time, made it abt ''violence&pornography'', missed deeper meaning between the lines and great satire, the fact, which only tells you everything about the intellect of these critics. But by now it all changed and American Psycho is cult classic and more&more media/critics etc recognize it as brilliant masterpiece it is. And without a doubt Bale made this movie. Like Tom Hanks said recently in the Actors on Actors interview with Viola Davis, if an actor can carry the movie this way, that the movie is nothing without this one particular actor - he is a genius. And Bale did exactly this in American Psycho, he certainly is brilliant actor. The problem as always, in any field, are people who just don't REALLY know anything about the subject/profession/ and judge it.
i agree but that doesnt mean that a star cant be a great actor for example Leonardo is both a star and a great actor but i understand that most mainstream actors arent that great

One of the most chilling moments in movie history: when Christian Bale looks blankly at the theater audience and whispers " abra cadabra " . No one breathed.
Making Something Disappear isn't enough but you have to bring it Back!!! Great lines said by a great Legend who worked with two great Legends and one Legendary Director. Christian is a brilliant actor, but comes off as a strikingly cold man but you can see Hugh work him over and warm him up towards the end. His talk about the charting and details sounded so sociopathic, but Hugh was so affable and accommodating. Really seemed like Hugh wanted to help Christian not come off as a dick.
+ZaneEX i see were your going, but if i say yea i keep up with murder cases and look into them every now and then, i find the motives of killers and how they pick there victims you know from a psych perspective. then someone else says yes i keep up to date on all murders in my state i build profiles of the victims and suspects, i study the thinking of killers and try to get in there minds. which one is more sociopathic
+onegirlrev Bale probably comes off as cold in Jackman's presence as the latter IS so affable. I feel like Bale is just always switched on which makes him so intense to people I think, you can almost see the wheels turning in his head, he's absorbing everything. So I would say they are evenly matched but just to tick off you Bale fanboys all over the comment section whining and downplaying Hugh just to promote Bale, which is so unnecessary, Hugh will take this fight hands on and win.
@@50n0fGod20 plus, Hugh with one punch, broke a WWE guy's jaw. He grew up as a sports guy.
They're such beautiful men-and good actors too!
One of the most chilling moments in movie history: when Christian Bale looks blankly at the theater audience and whispers " abra cadabra " . No one breathed.
It's been 14 years and I'm still enjoying watching this film
They hated each other but now they're friends. I find that a little funny
nearly a decade late but this christian bale is so freakin hot dammit
The greatest interview in the history of mankind. Bat of Gotham versus the wolverine of Canada.
Making Something Disappear isn't enough but you have to bring it Back!!! Great lines said by a great Legend who worked with two great Legends and one Legendary Director. Michael Caine, Hugh Jackman & Christian Bale is the Godfather of Hollywood. The Amount of emotions I felt in this movie makes me a patient of motion sickness. The Expressions and eye move were so perfect, Each time they showed up explain the entire scenario & then we have Christopher Nolan. He Indeed love to play with people minds. Who said movie will not teach you anything, for me It teaches me everything.
I only see Batman & Wolverine
bale:where's your movies!? WHERE'S YOUR MOVIES!?
jackman: not gonna tell ya bub!
you kinda get to know a little more about the actors' personalities here, amazing channel and these unscripted series
All I can think is Wolverine Vs Batman...
Too much testosterone in one room
...'will someone give this weak man some estrogen' haha
😂
Wolverine chatting with Batman....seems legit.
This movie was super underrated
Love both guys, christain is my fav actor, little side fact, Christain Bale acted with Hugh's wife in The Newsies
I Watched this Movie...first, thinking "It's all A Huge Act Man!." Then Towards the End, I stepped out of the theatre saying "Christ, and Bailed"...
Another Amazing Brain Twisting Movie from Talented Director Christopher Nolan.
+onegirlrev what do u mean exactly when u say "sociopathic"?
+onegirlrev You know before Bale sad he made a chart for the movie, Hugh said he kept a diary. So by your logic are they both "sociopaths"?
Also I think he always tries to be as honest as possible in that he wants the people he's speaking to to really get his meaning and not mistake him
I can see that. I didn't think to contrast the two, but it makes great sense now.
Nothing like a kickass Bond between two heroes .
Hugh gave a great performance in this movie one of his best actor reels
It feels like DC and Marvel crossover . Wolverine and Batman together.
They couldn't say hardly anything about the film, because it's really hard to say much without giving away stuff.
DAMMIT THEIR CAREERS ARE STILL GOING WELL
they were really both humble to each other...
It’s 7 years later and I want to see this fight.
Great performance from both of them in this movie. Nolan script was amazing.
Didn't expect I'd give a shit. But as it turns out Christian came out as being much more cool.Plus if you ever get the chance to be BATMAN or not be BATMAN always always be BATMAN
This movie is aging like wine for me
Wolverine vs Batman now that’s a Marvel and a DC crossover multiverse
was i the only one rooting for Hugh Jackmans character in Prestige?
lol, Hugh Jackman is one of my favorite actors, but his character in The Prestige was such a horrible human being that even I couldn't root for him.
sportsmed77 he did kill his wife
srdjankovic That's true.
Do not kill.
Bales character was better
