@woooudo what? no you;re thinking too much, people can like anime for similar reasons but the reason is different fundamentally to groups of people even amongst black people, this is more a case study of why more people gravitated towards it in a relatively short period(under 50 years) of time, though your reason might be the reason for some, the spike in black people watching anime could have been at the rising popularity of boondocks and afro samurai which is very believable though i am not stating it as fact, just probabilty. if these 2 shows and samurai champloo correlate strongly with the rising number of black people watching anime then it gives probabilty to his reason being a good causation whilst what you stated is more likely to be the reason people persist in watching anime not why they started. fact of the matter is there no not enough data in this kind of case study to even hypothesise a viable causation...... I'm black and took me a hell of a long time to watch boondocks and I still haven't watched afro samurai but somehow beacuse I started in the pubescent stages of my life I have fcking highschool of the dead and highschool DxD in my anime list..... i needed the "no horny" doge to bonk me in the head during those days lol. Exactly, people tend to gravitate towards thing's that are similar to themselves and/or that they are familiar with one way or another, weather cognizant of it, or subconsciously. It's basic psychology and everyone opporates this way. That's why media representation is important to a degree. That's not to say that there's anything necessarily unique about black people when it comes to this.

Ima give it to ya : most of the characters with darker skin than other characters in anime are not black. And for white people its even simpler to forget that most characters with white skin arent actually white people. Most of them are asian and sometimes its amazing how easy it is to forget. I have high hopes for us westerners getting more adult cartoons that have some of the same feel anime has.
The characters with "white skin" don't actually look white its just how the light reflects off them they're just light skin you can see a lot of asians with the same skin tone however the black characters do take on certain traits

I can't say i understand how black US culture is, since I don't live in USA, but definitely like anime for some reasons you listed. Since I am autistic and from a low income household, being socially isolated and bullied for having such attributes were a strong part of my younger years. I’m 35, probably older than most of the people watching this video. But I first was introduced to in anime in like 1994 or so with Dragon Ball Z. I don’t know if anyone remembers but back then DBZ was on basic TV it was on the UPS network. I didn’t know it was anime at the time, back then I had no ideas what anime even was. But I would religiously watch DBZ when it came on I thought it was a basic cartoon but I loved it. Then a little bit after that this amazing, beautiful, gorgeous movie came on that I didn’t know what it was I just thought it was just so beautiful. I tried for years to figure out what it was with no luck. But one day subsequently while watching something else I saw a commercial for the movie I had been looking for for years. The movie I had been looking for was Princess Mononoke. And I looked up what it was it why it looked so different from other cartoons I had watched. Only to find out it was an anime and given at the time I didn’t know what anime was. But I looked and found out that DBZ was also an anime. And this whole time I thought to myself that I loved something that I didn’t even know what it was. But around this time is when Toonami came with Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Inuyasha, DBZ, and then anime that reignitedmy love for anime Bleach. I resonated with Bleach so much because it was so atmospheric. And also because I would be out late (you know it was my teen years) with friends only to come in late and like clock work every Saturday when I got in for some reason Bleach would be on. And I sit and watch it and I just felt myself in Ichigo, because he would be out late doing god knows what living his teenage life. And the music just incapsulated me from the very start. I’ve said this once and I will say a 1000 more times Bleach has the best music/OST/background music of all time of any anime and I will defend that to the grave. But after Bleach my eyes were wide opened I would absorb any form of anime that was available at the time. And to this day I still do. And sorry for the long essay, I just wanted to give a little backstory into my life in anime is all.
Anime is accessible for every demographics. But there’s nothing wrong with anyone discussing on why anime had an impact to their community or demographics. Just because one group specifically mentions their own group, doesn’t make that inherently racist or exclusive from other groups. Anime so good because it is a portrayal of our lives it’s always a deep narrative of what we going through. The deeper reason why it is loved universal is because shows the test of the human spirit and makes its characters relatable and somewhat believable.
I fell in love with anime back in 94-95. Sci-fi channel started playing Japanamation movies like Akira, Vampire Hunter D, and countless others. American cartoons couldn't hold a candle to what Japan was doing. I was & still is hooked!
Pokémon, Yugioh, and Digimon were my earliest introductions to anime in the late 90's and early 2000's. The Big 3, Shonen Jump magazine, Toonami, and AdultSwim heightened my love for anime and changed my life. Back then, I only knew a few people that admittedly watched anime. It wasn't until shortly after I graduated from high school in 2017 or 2018 that anime really got to the mainstream. You have to thank RDCWorld and Lean Squad mostly for bringing anime to the mainstream social culture and social media. It's just crazy to me how much anime has grown in the states compared to back when I used to be the biggest Pokémon nerd as a little kid lol.

Good question As a black person myself I dont know why I'm watching it Its a blatantly obvious question but, im holding out for hope that it actually gives me a good answer
Well it's not as simple as that. The true question is, why do black people like anime more than other races proportional wise? As an asian guy, I can tell you that I've meet way more black anime fans than asian anime fans, which is surprising given the fact that anime originates from asian culture. What I'm trying to say is, if you were to select 10 asian guys, and 10 black guys all random, then the chances of there being more anime enthusiasts in the black group is higher than in the asian group. Now I'm not saying that the amount of pigmentation in your skin predetermines whether you like anime or not, I'm just trying to understand why black culture is so involved in anime.

I think anime just hits for people who have experienced being singled out and hated. I know Naruto really resonated for me and I just related because everyone picked on me and I didn’t understand why. To see someone as badass as naruto experience the same thing made me feel better. Maybe I could be like him someday and get a girl like Hinata and be respected by everyone. It made me want to work harder.
Man, thank you for sharing this. I've been an anime fan since the early days, back when you had to get ahold of fan-subbed VHS tapes to watch anything other than Robotech. And even back then, it was evident that anime had a special resonance with the Black community, even beyond the normal otaku. That's always stuck with me, and I've since wondered what that connection is. Seeing the Boondocks come out with that distinct anime style made it even more apparent, but until now, I didn't know what made it so special to the Black community, specifically. I definitely appreciate your sharing this perspective.

I'm from Africa and it's weird hearing we don't watch anime, we grew up watching DragonBall and sailor moon and this was in the 90s
Most my aunties introduced me into anime (sailor moon, afro samurai, etc.)
Listen
I'm from Kenya.but I got a handful of Friends in college who love watching anime and reading manga. Because we love anime so much than the american shows
In high school we use to keep this (anime) on the low because of the stigma of being lame. A lot of Brothers watched anime in 80’s and 90’s; but now that I'm almost 40 I have been watching it every since I can remember!😎
Same here I had to get vhs tapes of ninja scrolls and ghost in the shell I'm so proud of how far anime has come
I think that's why it seems like there's just this big explosion of black people liking anime now, they've always liked it, but there's always been this stigma in the black community about being a lame or too different and stuff like that so they didn't openly express it, that's why I think RDCWorld is so influential and successful, they showed it was cool to express yourself in that way.
That was me in highschool 2016-2020😂
A lot of brothers watched anime in the 80's that were redubbed for American, such as Voltron,Robotech Starblazer's and there were a lot of anime inspired cartoons such as Thundercats bionic 6 etc...I loved to draw and animate in high school and do t-shirts....but Akira was the one that made it an art form....had no idea it would get as popular as it did....but now guys like me no longer have to hide their interests
@@bryantsmith2061 I'm with you on that, being grown and having the ability to enjoy the things that you truly enjoy openly is refreshing. I look at my Sons and they don't have the same problems we had growing up, these dudes have whole Beyblade tournaments. I’m Muslim (has nothing to do with the story) but the closest thing I ever got to anime when I was a kid was Pokémon and Bakugon lol. Then I met a bunch of blacks dudes that were all anime fans and they introduced me to naruto, dbz, bleach, parasite, JOJO and AOT. Anime most definitely helped build our close bond 💯

And how to be awesome and not ugly, right?
The first anime I started was dragon ball z, no profound meaning.... just loved seeing big buff dudes yell till they endangered their planet with their screams and punches... simple times.

You can be black and like anime for not reasons listed in this video, AND, or also be black, but definitely grow a kinship for anime from the reasons listed here. I think this video did a terrific job at diving deeper into the sociological impacts that anime has had on and with the black community, and I think everyones journey with it is their own, but definitely what was said in this video is very true at looking at anime and its impacts on society and the black community as a whole through a more sociological and cultural perspective and experience.
Anime isn’t a genre, it’s a medium, there’s so many stories for everyone . In this age all races and genders can have a show for them or feel relatable. It’s great more fans are coming out which means more to look forward to

Now here is one for you : is mirko black or using fake tan, which is a trend in manga/anime, as it was a few years ago in japan ?

But may i remind you most of us in the west are not blond and do not have blue eyes. Which would leave only the name in anime or straight up saying where the character is from to guess it. My point about anime making no significant distinction stands.

😂😂
Certain cultures can relate more to certain anime
and plus that’s not what the entire video is about, you should watch it with an open mind and not base your opinion off the title
We needed this video like 20 years ago bro. i always wondered this its why i always connected with black people i love them.
Great work! Amazing essay, thank you so much for making this!
I can't wait When Saturday am managaka gets their manga into an anime that's when you will see a lot most of black anime and black characters
I’ve been watching anime since I was 6 and I am black. I used to get made fun of at school for it but now they think it’s cool.
As if being black has anything to do with whether or not you like something...
Bro you just put me on to some new Anime, thanks for the indirect recommendations. Much appreciated.
You've definitely answered the question, and this documentary was well put together, and so I thank you. I've loved anime ever since Escaflowne and I think it was because of the art. It was so fluid and dreamlike, yet it was the beginning of me loving anime in most genres. Due to my love of anime, my husband and I have Anime Nights, where we watch anime and eat our favorite foods and have started an anime page on Facebook. Again, thank you for this video!
Im saying this as a black person. Anime is just cool, its not that deep. Idk, I just dont like the idea of me liking anime having to be made into this big deal just because of my race, but thats just me.
we love anime but anime don’t love us 🤦🏾♂️
Check out the new anime coming out about the black samurai yasuke, he was a real black retainer of oda nobunaga
@@mookiestewart3776 The trailer didn’t look too realistic with the crazy colors but I really love the story so I’m most definitely watching it
What do you mean?
@@erenjeager5290 He was real person but they just made it semi-realistic with the anime
What do you mean by this?
Because we're people and anime cool? Do people actually think like this? WTF?
Really good video, I never really thought about why I love anime so much until I watched this video
GREAT VIDEO...ABOUT TIME SOMEONE SPOKE UP ON IT...BUT WE NEED MORE OF IF..I NEED MORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean anime is cool, and being black as nothing to do with my appreciation of it
He’s just sharing his opinion from his point of view as a black man. There’s nothing wrong with that and you don’t have to agree with him either.
