Thanks the the video! I’m moving to Japan soon and I love fishing, so I’ve been trying to research what my options will be when I move. Thanks especially for showing your equipment! If you are ever in Hyogo let’s go fishing!
Planning a river fishing trip in Hokkaido this October. Do you need to have any permits or licenses to fish? Are only certain rivers open to public fishing?
The only river I know you can fish for salmon in is the Churui River, near Shibetsu, but you do need a license to fish there. From what I recall, all other rivers are no fishing zones. Good luck with it.
I always thought Chum salmon is good for catching, but not for eating. Thanks for showing me otherwise. Are there runs of Sockeye salmon anywhere in Hokkaido or elsewhere in Japan? Cheers
Hi Inorvain, Thanks for you comment. The only other salmon I am aware of in Hokkaido is pink salmon, known locally a "Karafuto Masu", and they usually run a little earlier than the Chum, from late July into early September.
geez way to make me add salmon fishing in hokkaido to my japanese to-do list! great vid

I think everybody should visit Japan at least once. If you’re careful it won’t break the budget.
