How Japan's North is Like Canada... But Not

- I finally went to Japan's Northernmost prefecture: Hokkaido. As the plane was descending, I thought to myself, huh, this looks a bit like Canada. Thanks to the following for providing for my family's travel, accommodations, and food.

@SecretCommie bet
Taught himself English for a year is totally mindblowing.
He said he actually did bad in English at University, so he went to Canada to get better. It's been 30 years though, so I asked him how he maintained it. In the winter he works at the hotels around Niseko (famous for skiing and Australians), so he gets to practice his English there. Last thing I didn't include about him is that he said he couldn't afford to travel the world and meet people, so he wants to have people from around the world come stay with him so that he can see the world that way. Both the Oikawa's were very, very nice. Good people!
@@LifeWhereImFrom Damn... this kind of mindset the Japanese have really is something to marvel at.
All Japanese take English classes for many years, but they usually never really learn to speak the language, only pass written tests (like my high school French). It's not surprising that he could learn to speak when immersed in the language since they do have a good foundation.
Wonderful video about your experience in Hokkaido. Please do more and promote the prefecture and local cities and towns.
@@LifeWhereImFrom oh my God. I totally want to meet him when I'm in Japan next year. Please tell me how to reach him and his address

Watching the Silver Spoon anime really opened my eyes; the culture is seemingly identical in every way to what I'm familiar with in America

@@stevorobo692 nope, quoted from LWIF "In the winter he works at the hotels around Niseko (famous for skiing and Australians), so he gets to practice his English there." he just hang out with gaijin-san...
He does have a Japanese accent
The typical Japanese English accent everyone is familiar with is by people who come from the Tokyo region. The Japanese spoken in Tokyo is standard Japanese, while in the other prefectures they speak dialects AND standard Japanese. This allows Japanese people from more rural prefectures to hear sounds that Tokyo people cannot hear because they’re used to distinguishing between different sounds as they have to be able to hear a wider variety of sounds. That doesn’t mean that they’ll have a perfect accent, but it does make it easier for them to imitate more western sounds especially if they start at a younger age. This is just from my experience speaking to Japanese people trying to learn English.
I trully appreciate the farmer couple, dedicating their lifelong occupation with the intention of helping their daughter.

"Japanese farmer cannot make money"
Same everywhere, bud! Happy to see small farms that haven't been completely crushed though.
They have a very communistic system when it comes to farming. Some say this is to blame for their slim margins when at the same time, food is rather expensive in major Japanese cities.
Your voice is so soothing i could literally listen to you talk for hours.

There's a lot of content that you sorta gotta be in the mood to watch, but whenever I see that you uploaded a new video my heart skips a beat.
The cinematography is always stunning, the editing is smooth, it's informative, sometimes thought provoking and the content is very versatile. It's also straightforward, simple, and regardless of the subject of the video its always very interesting to watch.
To me you represent a zen-like entertaining learning experience. Based on the number of subscribers and your views, its definitely something we need more of in the UA-cam community.

100% agree! Keep up the good work Greg 👍
Can't get over how much rural japan reminds me of my home state of iowa. The beauty captured in both is different yet very similar.
It's just the nature of being surrounded by mostly nature. It reminds me a lot of farms where I live, in rural Colorado.
Maybe similar climates? I've only been on a farm 1 time in my life and it was a coconut farm. It looked very similar to what you would find in Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
Like Iowa, but with volcanoes, and without meth.
When Japan began settling the island in the 1870s they hired advisors from the US to recommend industries and crops for it. During their surveys they saw it was very similar to the Midwest and recommended what worked there.
@@slappy8941 marshaltown takes umbrage with the meth comment 😉
As a Thai I love Hokkaido especially winter, what a nice change from the year round heat we get and I kinda obsessed at walking around outside when it's 10 below freezing and it's snowing.
One thing I remember from my trip to Japan was the trees and how similar they are to where I live in Canada. I live on Vancouver island and getting off the plane in Japan made me feel at home because of how the trees looked and smelled. Specially how tall they are. I live by an old growth Forrest with some of the oldest trees in Canada and the Forrest’s in Sendai where I was, was a mirror to my home in Canada!
Damn, never realised how badly I need to head to Hokkaido
You’re white.

@@cannabisPREVENTION why does it matter?
I was half paying attention because I'm at work, looked over, and was quite shocked to see pictures of what's also my hometown!
My husband and I had the same thought when we visited Hokkaido! (We live in Yokohama, but we miss snowy Michigan winters.) So as the plane was landing we were immediately like "wait...this looks like Michigan!"
I think that if you've lived in Japan (Honshu) for a while, you'll find similarities between Hokkaido and some foreign place.
If you live in Hokkaido, you most likely won't see such a strong similarity.
The quality of life is generally pretty good; I can't think of any glaring issues that I've come across that are inherent to Kanagawa. It's more just general things like the language barrier and renting housing as a foreigner. The big things like healthcare, public transit, food, etc are great! Kanagawa is nice because I'm still close to Tokyo, but the pace is slower and it's less crowded.
If you're looking to get away from the city, southern Kanagawa has some really lovely quiet neighborhoods, nice beaches, mountains, etc.

So true for Vancouver!
@@LifeWhereImFrom Yeah, little hurt by Toronto being put down. I'm from Niagara, and we are tough in the snow. I know you were just joking around, though.
@@theresaratelle7111 I loved the dig at Toronto. Honestly, Torontonians will never live down that incident.
On Vancouver island there was school when ice was on the road enough that we got stuck for a few moments in the middle of an intersection but another day I could have made it to school fine and it was cancelled lmao
Northern Japan has the same climate as Ontario and Quebec.
Yep. Also, why people dislike the plains. Have you ever tried living in -40*C in shorts walking 5 minutes to your local safeway when snow is up to your waist since they don't always shovel the snow?
Southern Ontario, middle Ontario, or Northern Ontario? Big differences in temperature.
@@leeham6230 Southern Ontario has the same climate as Hokkaido. Northern Ontario is basically Scandinavian.
@@Andrew-gn9qp 🍉 okay thank u
-40 is -40 in celsiuis and fahrenheit by the way. I mean it’s the only temperature that they meet at but next time you want to mention living in minus 40 you don’t have to specify! :)
I used to live in Sapporo for about a year, and trust me, Hokkaido is nothing like Naichi part of Japan. It feels like you living in different country, and as someone who come from tropical part of Asia (SE Asia specificaly), experiencing Hokkaido's winter is the best thing i've ever did.
I could say Hokkaido is a big chunk of nothingness filled with hidden gem.
Yup, Hokkaido is like Canada or Finland, and Sapporo looks like Montreal.
Magnificent nature and big bears. Hokkaido and Canada have a lot in common
omg those price sold to factory are daylight robbery 😱, i feel sad for the farmers 😢, hope they have a good health..
The Midwest, Canada, and Hokkaido apparently need to just host a potluck and get to know each other.

I have been in Hokkaido for almost 14 years now. I‘ve been a subscriber of yours for a long time as well. Love your videos. You really captured a lot of the great and frustrating things about Hokkaido, as you always do. Cheese being number one on the frustrating side.. (and snow, we got our first snowfall in Sapporo today). But I really appreciate the natural beauty and space every time I visit other parts of Japan. - Also my wife‘s parents are farmers near Toyako, something I am very appreciative of every time boxes show up at our door here in Sapporo. Thanks for the great videos!! Glad you guys enjoyed Hokkaido
Phillyprnc so why don’t the local cheese makers copy more of the Euro varieties?
I live in Canada, specifically in Ottawa and we got first snowfall a couple weeks ago. Already dropped about a foot of snow :p We get basically double the amount of snow compared to Winnipeg and Toronto, still, nothing compared to Hokkaido apparently. That being said, the scenery of Sapporo in the winter looks so identical to Ottawa, its kind of amazing. If I ever visit thats exactly where I'm going!
@@esitu5655 Shouldn't they make what they prefer to eat?
I visited Sapporo for the Winter Snow Festival and was shocked by how they dealt with the amount of snow accumulation. In some areas they just let it build up and tossed gravel on top for traction. Some snow banks I saw were over a foot high above the sidewalks. =0

Kinda makes sense. Hokkaido took in a huge proportion of American agricultural and economic advisors that introduced a lot of North American farming techniques into Japan. The Americans brought cattle farming and beer with them, among other things.
Edit: incredible, relaxing video
The irony here is that the Marshall plan was an economic purchase-act designed to buy people out of communism. Two generations later, the result of that Marshall plan was the Liberal Democrat party running the country for 45 years and the Hokkaido farmers cannot afford subsistence off of market-prices.

Thanks for another great video. I don't normally comment on these things, but I recently drove from Otaru in eastern Hokkaido to the Shiretoko peninsula in the west and back again. I took the overnight car ferry from Maizuru in Kyoto prefecture to Otaru, which is an experience I thoroughly recommend - it's a very reasonable price and there's even a sento onboard which has sea views! I think you'd enjoy it. I’ve spent some time in BC, too. I also thought there were many similarities between Hokkaido and Canada. As a photographer, I’ve enjoyed photographing bears and eagles in both places. The quality of seafood is also famously good in both Canada and Hokkaido. Also, Hokkaido and Canada both have large indigenous populations - visiting the Ainu village near Lake Akan was a highlight of the trip. Anyways dude, thanks again for the great videos. Hokkaido is like Wisconsin! With their dairy products and whatnot.
It’s like a cross between Idaho and Wisconsin.
Part of the reason Hokkaido is like this goes back to the 1870s when Japan began settling the island. They hired experts from the United States to advice them on what industries and crops could be developed. During their surveys they saw the similarities to the Midwest and recommended the same industries and crops that were successful there such as dairy, wheat, potatoes, corn and beer brewing. The last one directly led to the founding of what is now Sapporo Beer.
Fun fact: A bunch of Hokkaido's agriculture is based on the agriculture of Denmark

But damn those hash browns at 6:42 look so sad to me. Must have crispy hash browns!
Claire Z I am sure they were crispy, I am guessing that’s the colour when freshest potatoes are used!
@@alishamohanty7732 I've grown my own potatoes many times, and though I can only guess how they were prepared in this video, I am a total lover of hash browns, and I can tell you that the crisp-level of your hash browns depends on how much moisture was removed, and how starchy the potato is. Before making hash browns, especially when using fresh potatoes, you should shred them into a cold water bath, to remove excess starch, rinse them repeatedly, and dry them well, if you want perfectly crispy hash browns! If you don't rinse and dry them extremely well, you'll end up with colorless and gummy hash browns, which is always sad, in my opinion.
:)
