About 10 years ago I put in a lot of time trying to learn how to fish for Salmon and Steelhead. I never learned any of this stuff growing up and was always envious of those that did. I spent a lot of time at Fisherman's Marine back then asking question - youtube wasn't really a thing yet so I bought a book. I tried to hit the right spots, do what everyone else was doing. The idea of hooking onto a big ol Salmon or Steelhead...and of course eating it seems about the coolest outdoorsy thing you could do. I never caught anything :( and after a few seasons, of driving all over the region I gave up. But I never lost the desire to catch a big fish and lately I've been looking at my old gear and thinking about giving it another shot. I'm really glad I found your channel - I've subscribed and I'll be trying to learn as much as I can. Thank you.

Hey man I just want to say I caught my first big steelhead this week and I was feeling the same way before that. Like, was I unlucky or just bad? Your best luck will happen when you're at a river and you see other people landing big fish, listen to what they're saying to each other and look at their setups, copy it. If they're landing, you can too.

Cant stress it enough, reel until you feel tension then set the hook. I fished bobbers for years and never got a fish on a bobber because i would have my bobber go down and id just set the hook with all the line on the water. Than i learned to reel down before setting the hook and now a rarely miss fish. Trust me, it works

the weight is right after the float , yes it would keep the float vertical but so would a weighted bobber and you would have one less thing on the rig for better presentation and less chance to hang up.. With the weight right after the float it really has no effect on the bait that i can see?

Yall use some crazy heavy gear over there. Most people in the great lake tribs use center pin setups with 10lb test, sometimes less, and manage to land beast chinooks still 🤣 I use a baitcasting setup but even then it's a lighter bass set up, your gear could damn well be used for musky. Its a really interesting contrast from the two different fisheries, same species but two very different approaches.

Better to lose some mono than break off the lead. That way you avoid polluting the river with lead. I prefer the inline sinker with lighter mono than the braid so Im less likely to lose the lead.

So that way you lose everything, and the lead. Ok
