- I am tired of seeing YT videos with bad subtitles when there's no excuse. Even those who put effort in are only putting in very little. In this video I passive aggressively demonstrate how easy it is to add quality subtitles.

I think the worst part of auto subtitles is how it breaks things down word by word, makes it very painful to read. I make subs for (almost) all my vids and even do some fun things like change fonts or point out mistakes and a lot of viewers really apreciate it.
It also allows for creative things like what the youtuber Joe Vevers does with his doctor who joke videos, which I'd hope you're aware of, where he uses the captions to hide fun facts and also add in hidden jokes like Dalek names and sound effects.
I've seen this trend mostly in tiktoks and it's just illegible.

As someone who used subtitles, I really do appreciate when there are fun and interesting things in subtitles. (I do not even Need subtitles, I just like using them.)

I miss the days of community captions, they worked great and allowed such a wide audience to enjoy more things. Captions add another layer to videos, for me some examples I've seen are where the captions themselves have little jokes hidden and embedded in them, or they help elaborate things along with the video, like corrections and finer details. I myself just enjoy reading them with videos it even if I don't need them that much, but others very much do need them. So thank you for addressing this issue!
Captions with extra jokes are the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. It's disorienting when the captions don't match the video at all. It's annoying.
I believe kliksphilip made a video about community captions where he said that often there are people who barely change the auto generated captions or somebody else's captions and also put their username somewhere. While this is not ideal, I still think it's better to have community captions that are flawed than none at all. To fix that, UA-cam could even let you choose some trusted users to be allowed to make community captions for your videos so you could easily filter out the bad ones for example. There are probably more methods that could have solved that instead of UA-cam just removing them altogether. I personally don't exactly need subtitles but they help me a lot when trying to understand what's being said.
@@LauraLowe Yeah I can see your point, they can be disorienting. I myself just like it, makes it more fun but yeah it's not really the intended purpose, they obviously have a time and place. More serious and accurate captions are better and more helpful, I just enjoy when simple videos often have fun with their captions, but accuracy is priority, I suppose I should've omitted that or reworded it. I like how this dude came out of nowhere, started uploading absolutely mind-blowing hl2 and source engine videos, and now is trying to make UA-cam better. What a legend. Subtitles are great feature, I used to watch Jolly Wangcore back in school when he used to make subtitles for his videos and that even helped me a bit to learn english.
He's actually been editing on the VDC wiki for years, so it makes an awful lot of sense for him to know way too much about half life games
I do have a great sense of hearing, but thanks to dysphasia, I have hard time understanding speech itself, which is only made worse if somebody has a bad mic, speaks with a thick accent, or mumbles too much. Subtitles make a world of difference, and I'm always thankful for content creators who put even a tiny bit of effort into subtitling their videos. You're setting up a great example, I really hope other creators see this video and learn from it 💜
just curious, what's dysphasia like? i looked it up and i'm curious cause i also have some trouble understanding speech, i often have to ask people to repeat themselves usually more than once and im pretty bad articulating things trough talking as well, mixing up words pretty commonly

My hearing is just fine, but I often have to ask people to repeat what they say slowly and clearly multiple times, and sometimes even that won't work. Dysphasia also affects my speech, it causes me to stutter a lot, I make up my own jargon, and mix syllables and letters constantly, and pronouncing some letter combinations and sounds is really difficult.

Thank you for this, english isn’t my first language and having proper subtitles are always so much better for comprehension. I know a lot of bilingual people would feel the same.
As a video editor I actually make subtitles for all videos our production team create. But I don't like using UA-cam tools for that. I use Premiere Pro built-in subtitles generation tools, it much faster and easier to edit subtitles on the same timeline with project. Then I simply export them as .srt and upload to UA-cam. And as a non native English speaker myself, I really appreciate when creators add non-auto subtitles to their videos.
As a hard of hearing person, I really appreciate it when people put effort into their captions!

I used to use subtitles a lot more when I was learning english. It's super useful even if you aren't deaf
UA-cam shot themselves in the foot super hard by removing the cooperation of community subtitles. Incredibly shoddy.

I make UA-cam videos on my iPad, and not a computer. As such, fiddling with subtitles in the editor is very tricky and I don’t really bother with it. Nonetheless I still enjoyed the video, you have a very calming voice :P

Subtitles are important for learning or clarification too. Say someone mentions a term, without the subtitles you might mis-hear the unfamiliar word or term and never find it.
A good example is learning another language, sometimes by proxy. There’s a Chinese word people keep using that sounds like “Shabdo” which is actually said phonetically as “Cha-bu-duo”. The comment sections were almost always people mis-spelling the word or asking what it was with the uploaders never responding. But with subtitles on it would have saved them from being spammed the question over-and-over.

You're exactly right. There are a great many strategies to creating even halfway decent subtitles. One is if your script is accurate, take the body text, and create a double line break at the every piece of end punctuation. UA-cam splits subtitles based on these blank lines. To aid in readability, you can create these breaks automatically with this regular expression in Notepad++ or similar: Find: ([!?.])( ) and replace with: \1
And if you want to put even more effort into them, you can use free high-quality software, such as Subtitle Edit. Another is asking users to write them on Captionfy or Amara.
I promise that as long as I have subtitle editor permissions, at the very least 2ndJerma will receive high-quality subtitles whenever I have time.

Just yesterday I uploaded my first video in months, and was just incredibly done with the project as a whole, for many reasons, having spent what feels like an eternity on it. Adding subtitles took like 15m total and was barely even a consideration effort wise.
Also, readability tip: have a tiny gap between each subtitle segment, that way it is much easier to tell when they have changed.
I enjoyed your Portal challenge video, seeing the spacing you had to make to save all the turrets in the end! Also, thanks for adding captions, it certainly improved the video :D

I'm relatively young, still in my early 20's, but I have hearing damage (nerve damage from a disregard of hearing protection, mainly comes in the form of tinnitus that can drown out reasonably loud sound and even be physically painful) that continues to slowly progress. I think that someday, likely sooner than expected, I will completely lose my hearing. Once that day comes, I will be entirely reliant on UA-camrs being thoughtful enough to actually bother manually subtitling their videos, something that is sadly uncommon.
While UA-cam does have automatically generated captions, they're terrible, as appearing word-by-word means I spend all of my time looking at the captions, instead of quickly reading it and being free to look back to the video's main focus. But it's not just that, because UA-cam HAD an option for community generated captions, but axed that feature for no decent reason, and got rid of the old captions generated by such efforts. So now having accurate and well-timed captions is seemingly a luxury.
While I understand that for certain channels, where content is improvised or done "as live" (such as certain let's plays/funny moments, any sort of reaction youtuber, people that do live content such as streaming, etc.) may have to put in more effort than those that read a script off a page, I still think that they really should, because there are people out there who struggle to pick out words, or differentiate between speakers if there are more than one, and that's not to mention those who are completely deaf.

Captions aren't just for Deaf folks, either (though that IS extremely important)-- conditions like Auditory Processing Disorder can make it incredibly hard to understand other people, even if you have perfect hearing. Even more of that 30% needs those captions than you'd think.
As a non-english native speaker subtitles help A LOT, even as a psychological thing, I know they are there, I know that I might even not read team at times but having them there gives me actually working placebo and I hear stuff better.
Even having automatic subtitles can help, the worst of the worst is when UA-cam gets the wrong language or when video makers straight up disable them, even the automatic ones.

And I really appreciate that on this channel subtitles are taken seriously, since automatic ones objectively suck for things like character names, lore objects and/or technical details (map names, console commands, etc - which is BTW clearly demonstrated in this video). So the lack of CC in similar videos can cause a lot of confusion, to the point of having to rewind and re-watch confusing fragment

About the automatic ones I still like them rather than nothing, as long as you listen they really give an hand in videos where there are just normal terms and simple stuff.

It’s uniquely sad that I’ve suffered with automatic captions so long that it has stopped looking weird. I’m HoH and kinda just participate in the Hearing world because I have to. :/
The channels who have someone who does captions and even has little bracketed in jokes or something are the best kind of person. They are my treasures. Technology Connections, Tasting History, are the top two for this!
The script upload is better but still bad. At least I can get the idea of your video from that but I can hear some things still. So my brain gets confused when I hear things that don’t match what I’m reading.
The problem isn’t I have no hearing. It’s that the noises I do hear don’t make fucking sense.

Subtitles are a very important thing for not just deaf people, but anyone hard of hearing or with some kinds of audio processing issues - like I have. I can understand videos without subtitles, but it's a lot easier when there are subtitles.

The auto-captions are very funny sometimes. It can (or could) understand Winston Churchill's speeches.
Also it detects swears. I haven't yet seen it incorrectly censor a word, but most fucks and shits have been blanked.

Honestly i love so much when people do subtitles, im not deaf, but i find difficult to hear someone, even at full volume i still find it difficult, by the subtitles i understand way more what someone is saying, especially if is english since is not my first language, so i really appreciate a lot when people do subtitles! this is also one of the reasons i like your content, dont know how to make it more understable but i appreciate it a lot really.

Something that I think is worse is when a video has, like, a weird hybrid of the two, where it seems like manually-written subtitles, down to just being called "[language name]", but they're... off.
Line-breaks are put in the wrong place, sometimes swears are [___]'d out, sentences end in the wrong places (including in in-video clips); all that autosubtitle badness.
For good examples of this, the two that I can think of off the top of my head are Civvie's Blood II video, and some (but not all) of Lindsay Ellis's videos.
I've seen the same thing. It's especially obvious to me on channels like LTT where technical terms get transcribed incorrectly. I suspect that they're using a commercial captioning service that doesn't have particularly high standards, but I don't really know.

The worst offenders are the ones that seem to just look over the automated captions and then bake them into the video like I'd rather they didn't do anything at that point.
The weird ones are the ones that reflect some kinda script change in the video like how do you miss that?
I hope this video gets lots of views from other UA-camrs. It's maddening to watch big budget videos with automatic subtitles while many smaller channels like yours take the time to make them properly.
Your voice is clear so your demonstration wasn't very representative of this problem. Sometimes the automatic subtitles even say the complete opposite of what the speaker is saying (confuses do/don't for instance).
I'm not a native English speaker and I have audio processing disorder plus I live in a noisy place, so these "details" make a difference on my enjoyment of a video and returning to the channel.
Content creators may also walk the extra mile and keep the bottom clear of in-video text so subs don't cover them.
Forget deaf people, plenty of UA-camrs are seemingly oblivious that their video's audio track is so bad (whether there's background noise/music drowning them out, people literally talking over each other on podcasts, or the creator having such god awful accent) that neither the automatic subtitles, nor me, a person with perfect hearing, can understand a thing anyone is saying.
Adding captions to videos with good sound design is a good accessibility option, but some creators being too lazy to subtitle themselves literally lose regular views because nobody understands them.
Hopefully more attention will be given to subtitles in the future, I prefer using them whenever possible as well (I even watch movies/shows with CC enabled). In this case, since they were corrected, at least the subtitles aren't soup, I've seen many cases where they are mistranslated to shit lol.
Also, since it was in the video, I think the Rebels/Citizens almost never firing their RPGs is an old bug that arose from the engine transition. This worked as intended in the old engine, but it's yet to be fixed in the OB one. The Deck update fixed tons of things and added more improvements (it even finally fixed the death poses after over a decade), but it looks like some gameplay related bugs do still remain.

I played old engine HL2 from start to end a couple of times and IIRC rebels were still not firing RPG as often as in Pinsplash's footage. I am pretty sure OB engine made it worse, however.

actually, it can be difficult too: that editor was insanely laggy when i was subtitling a 5 hour video I made.
Still, I try to subtitle every voiceover video I make and I appreciate every channel that puts in the effort.
Captionfy offers a very similar editor that's lag-free and offers additional features. Formats are fully compatible with UA-cam.

I use SubtitleEdit program, you can add colors, adjusts the duration of text appearance, alignment and more, porting it to youtube is a bit tedious but worth it.
I struggle a lot with my adhd and subtitles are super helpful for me to be able to keep track of any information a video gives. I absolutely hate how UA-cam removed the community captions.

You see, I admittedly watch youtube when im not supposed to, and I have to mute the video. In those cases, I usually am forced to use auto subtitles and have to piece together what the hell the youtuber is saying, which is usually confusing.

I don't often need subtitles in videos (though I do in games), but I REALLY appreciate when people put in the effort to properly make subtitles for their videos. Hell, depending on the youtuber (or company even), they may hide some sneaky/funny stuff in their subtitles which is often a great extra touch.

oddly enough this applies for movies and stuff on streaming services. there is so much content, that nearly none of it is hand subtitled, and its terrible. there are typos everywhere, lines last too long or too short, either because they are programmed that way, or because the display lags behind. its insane that captions from 1995 on original airings are better than todays offerings

If you use Premiere to edit your videos, you could also try its Caption system, it works relatively similar and (for me) its word auto-transcription works better. You'll still need to work on the line breaks and stuff like that, but its even faster, in my own experience.

Just like my favorite songs, often times I go the longest time mishearing a lyric only to find a lyric video 10 years later and I'm like "what"
Same goes for UA-cam commentaries, subtitles help clear that up on the spot.
I love when I finally require subtitles to understand what someone said, enable them, and see that it's autogenerated and the bot that generated them had a harder time understanding the creator than me.

i'm not a native english speaker, and the subtitles a lot of the times, helps me understand some words i don't understand, because of the reason that you have mentioned
I use subtitles in English (not in Russian), just to fully understand the speaker's speech, because it is more difficult to translate by ear without subtitles. I don't have any hearing problems, but subtitles help a lot to understand content in another language.
i can hear perfectly well however i enjoy reading the subtitles anyways because it helps me take the information in

Yeah those automatic captions are just terrible. I've seen it using word 'foreign' when some sound plays.
if only they had not removed community subtitling, used to do that a bit. quite fun timing subtitles and making them look nice.
heard of a plugin called nekocap which allows community subtitles to be loaded on any video, but there are rarely any available.
it's nice to see a creator taking this seriously, even if I never paid attention to it in the first place
I def share the frustration with youtubers treating captions as an optional thing. Like, mate, you spent how long editing the video and rewatching it back and forth, but you can't do a quick once-over for people with hearing or parsing issues? Or heck, sometimes my headphones die and I wanna keep watching videos while it's recharging, and for that, I can only go to people who don't half-ass or no-ass their captions.
Hell, when people leave in the fucked up timing like what you were fixing, the captions can actually make it MORE difficult to parse what they're saying
thank you for this video! i'm not even hard of hearing, but i do occasionally turn on subtitles on videos. we can absolutely tell and appreciate if someone puts in the (dare i say) minimum effort to provide subtitles and allow accessibility for more people to enjoy videos.
so that's why i've been seeing desync'd captions
as someone who used to caption other videos, while not difficult, it is on the time-consuming side. if you live a busy life with a tight schedule i can definitely understand when people don't do this.
another problem ive noticed, is that often, the youtube CC stays on-screen, and covers up the subtitles that where baked into the video!
Yeah, this is a problem. Special formats can fix this by manually positioning the subtitles. Few channels go to this effort however. One that comes to mind is Tom Scott. I do so as well on 2ndJerma.

Yeahhhh, the youtube autogen subtitles really only work when you still have hearing.
thank you for talking about this, i use close captions as much as i can since even though i can hear things fine, i can't process speech that well and often need close captions. if i ever plan on like, taking youtube seriously, i do plan on doing close captions, i've already had some experience messing w/ close captions in the past, and have an editor of choice ready to go.
btw, i like youtube channels like my life in gaming that use those advanced captions that can be positioned wherever, it's very useful for when you don't want subtitles blocking important elements. ...the unfortunate part is those captions use the file format of .ASS, i'm not joking

I use subtitles quite a bit when Im eating so I can hear the video over me chewing without having to turn the volume up to unreasonable levels
I imagine videos that are like, 5 or so minutes long would be a breeze to fix up the captions for. But a lot of UA-camr's make long-form videos, which range from 30 minutes to an hour long. Even longer. I am in no way defending laziness, but asking people to fix up captions for a 30-60+ minute video is kind of fuckin' absurd. Of course, if it's nowhere near that long, then there's not much room to argue against fixing up your captions.
This wasn't as much of an issue back when Community Captions were a thing, but now that they're gone, there's not much that can be done about it unless the uploader is willing to take the time to fix up the captions (which for a 5 or so minute long video isn't that bad, but for long-form videos, it's understandable why they wouldn't bother).
Also, I find UA-cam's built-in tools to be really frustrating to work with. It's quite janky and unintuitive in crucial areas.

Honestly, even just pasting a script in is already significantly better than relying on automatic captions purely. It's also a better starting point to actually fix up into good subtitles the way you did it, rather than fixing up from the purely automatically generated ones, because different wording is still often way closer to the actually said things than potentially completely nonsensical generated text UA-cam makes.
for various reasons at various times I will use subtitles - and I don't have any hearing problems. But if I did, I could not watch any channel without them.

Honestly, adding subtitles and putting in little Easter eggs (usually emojis) is like, the best part of uploading a video for me 😌
If the subtitle window wasn't complete dogshit for transcription I would use it more (I am currently experimenting with Final Cut Pro's subtitle system instead)
Subtitles are super useful. If I'm in a voice call or any situation in which im watching something and other people can be heard, I turn them on because it allows me to talk and hear people without missing any dialogue from the video.
Even if i leave captions enabled because they were enabled automatically for me, they are still helpful. Even if i and most of other people don't notice that some captions took a lot of effort to make, they are still important and need to be made properly. Even if i don't actually care if the subtitles are going word by word or by full sentences, that's still a good thing to do them. Not only deaf or hear impaired people can enjoy the videos, sometimes i don't wanna put the volume at high, and this is when the captions are helping me. I actually notice if captions are really well made (and if i do them myself, sometimes, i try my best)

i had no idea that you could just edit auto subtitles... anyway, this video is very important and i agree that every youtuber that includes speech in their videos need to pay more attention to subtitles as some people either don't speak English, are deaf, don't have speakers, or just need an easy way to find a certain part of a long video (transcript).
As a non-English-speaking viewer, it is quite difficult to understand the English voice of a UA-cam video even though there is no great difficulty in daily English conversation. Because I can't see the speaker's mouth or expression at all. In this case, English subtitles are very helpful for understanding videos easily.

Is subtitles have some guidelines? I notice YT deleting some of captions from my videos in odd way. I adding two languages, and videos can 'lost' random one after some time.
Auto generated captions are becoming a problem outside youtube as well. A while ago I took an online course for learning the Godot game engine. After the first video they apparently decided it was now called Guido for the entire rest of the course.
Each video was only a few minutes long and this was a course you had to pay money for.
From my understanding TV and film have legally enforced standards for accessible closed captions. Sometimes I kind of wish some parts of the internet had that too.
I'm not deaf but mental and environmental issues I deal with can make it hard for me to focus or parse what's being said in videos, and subtitles make it much easier. However, BAD subtitles are actually even worse for me- since I'm still watching with audio, I can pretty quickly notice if the subtitles don't match what's being said, and it can get distracting and annoying enough that I either watch without subtitles or go watch something else. There are some youtubers I've stopped keeping up with because it's incredibly obvious they just blindly copy paste an early rough draft of the script and call it a day. I really, sincerely appreciate you, Technology Connections, Tom Scott, and all the other youtubers I watch who put in the extra care with captions. Otherwise i'd never have anything to watch while eating cereal.
Wow, the subtitle tool was improved significantly. Too bad I can't do community captions anymore and I don't upload anything worth subbing.
as someone who always has captions on it pisses me off when someone just ignores captions completely (i.e. autogenerated subtitles missing or in wrong language) especially since i cant use my pc for a good while as im in another city and wont be able to listen to audio most of the time without big headphones

Actually, I can watch videos in English normally, but it still takes a little time in my head to figure out what it's about. In addition, some words or phrases may not be clear to me. Therefore it's amazing that you make subtitles for your videos, it's always more convenient to read/listen in your native language anyway.
Even auto-captions are better than nothing. They're enabled by default, so people who go out of their way to disable them (or set them to the wrong language like Vietnamese... for some reason) are some of the worst kinds of people. Why make a video *less* accessible??
Yes, the auto-captions have problems (they tend to Capitalize Random Words for some reason, among other issues) but they've gotten a LOT better since they were first added. I used to avoid using auto-captions back in ~2018-2019 because they sucked so much.
