I'm still at level 55 in my first playthrough. I just tried a couple of times the gems and it's a huge system. I have no idea how I'm gong to combine all of those ems, I'll take it slowly. I took a lot to understand how Xenoblade Chronicles 2 worked, I guess I will take a couple of months until I understand this prequel.
The information is solid, but I recommend spacing out your text into paragraphs and maybe sub headings for the gems, as it's difficult to read otherwise. Looks like one big text wall. :(
I think Dunban/Riki is a way better combo for Cylinderising a Crystal, especially late game. That is because his Combo Master has a hidden property that weakens Flames below normal whenever the flame changes, which reduces the impact of the odd Medium or Strong Flame on Riki. For Mega Heating I love Riki/Reyn because it has a better average than Shulk/Reyn. Imo that is worth grinding the affinity. Riki is Gemsmith God
I feel like such an idiot. I've played this since the Wii version. I never once thought about using Sharla and Riki to purposefully suck at crafting so that they waste it all on gentle flames and then you can cylinder individual traits. That's SO SMART.
You thought that was bad? I recently completed the game and somehow completely missed that you could still burn crystals/cylinders even when the percentage is over 100%.
Dunban and Riki can be used for optimal sucking at crafting. Because Dunban will make it that even if the occasional strong or medium happens, it will always only be 2%.

I think something that's worth mentioning is that the glory gauntlets (and speed v frame for seven) give haste 45% which is just 5% below the max. It's really nice because haste is a weapon gem and having it on armor can be invaluable. If you plan to do an armor guide this is definitely worth mentioning. I also want to say that ether up gems can be really good on Melia/Riki because ether arts tend to scale better off ether than strength arts do for strength so if you have some extra space on your armor throw them on. The method can be found here about 2/3rds down the page gamefaqs.gamespot.com/wii/960564-xenoblade-chronicles/faqs/65405 It does spoil Seven for those only reading the comments.
I'll admit that the Sharla-Riki combo for crafting gems to have the required cylinders is pretty smart ! In my many playthrought of the original, i used to have one of my affinity link between two party members at lowest as possible so that they had the less moves possible to craft the correct cylinder, and it worked nicely but obviously i would miss out on an entire skill tree link between two party members so that wasn't such a great method overall ... I also noticed you mention certain gems as being really useful when I'd never really thought of them as being so. Got me wondering, might you be able to do a tier list of sorts on gem effects? I think it would be really useful for people who would otherwise overlook very useful gems!
Nice video guide. What is far more work, though, is unlocking the fourth and fifth skill tree branches of the seven main characters. Though that is not a key requirement for beating the main story or killing the superbosses.
The best way to safely split crystals into cylinders or refine cylinders to higher percentages is a minimum affinity Fiora/Riki pair. Low number of turns for an unwanted party bonus chain to spike your 32% desired trait to 114%, low strong and medium flame chances, high gentle flame odds, and a guaranteed cylinder gauge level 3 from the start. Refine your cylinders until the combined value is about 150% for your desired trait. Pick only the desired trait to refine into a gem, don't go for other gems in the same firing, and then refine it as Riki/Reyn. I have never once got less than 300% by doing this. 400+ is the usual result.
Really appreciate the spoiler alert :) I'm new to the game so haven't got very far yet. The gem crafting has me super confused though, lol. Will revisit this video once I've got the 7th party member. Thanks so much :)
Most fun I had in mid-game was Electro Up and maxing out ether on melia, linking Riki´s skill that you get reduced cooldown in daylight and sharlas ether boosting and watch melia 2-3 shot alot of enemies with Thunder Spam. Maybe you want to make a video about expert mode aswell, because it completly changed how I play through the game. Completing EVERY SIDEQUEST POSSIBLE before entering a new area just leaves me on the same level as most basic enemies and its AWESOME, forcing me to use a good party setup and properly using the mechanics and actually time my skills instead of mindlessly pressing all arts that are not on CD. Also it allowed me to max out abilities and Passiv trees, because the enemies reward you with more experience.
Thanks for talking about the best gems. I had never thought about the attack plus gems. I thought it was only for auto attacks. I didn’t know every skill bases damage off of auto attack stat.
I really enjoyed gaming this system back in the Wii days. I was able to use gem crafting to turn Seven into a full-blown auto-attack murder machine. With their haste buff on top, I had them doing nonstop autos and it was hilarious. :P
This might have been said but ironically the hardest gems to get mega heat are the rare mining crystals since they often have 3 or 4 traits and at max party affinity it is VERY rare to not overshoot the 100 purity rating and make a low-quality gem. The best solution is ironically to try and mega heat all of them at once with Melia (Shooter) and Fiora (Engineer) as this pair specializes in good Medium flames which raises all traits in the furnace. With party support and a half decent RNG roll you will get mega heat on at least 2 of the qualities in a single session and you don't have to savescum many times to get 3 or all 4 traits to mega.
One thing I found regarding medium flames. If you're okay with sacking less than necessary gems for more desirable ones like debuff resist, haste or stat boosting ones, medium flames may be helpful for separating the qualities from a set of several different types, and cooking it at the same time. Saves a bit of time when you cook the gem a bit afterwards to get close to 100%. I personally like using Melia as the engineer for this purpose, as she is good at creating medium flames.
when playing the first i liked having my affinity low between 2 certain people so i could get the incremental gains and be very careful with having them close to 100%
Thank you so much for the spoiler warning in the beginning, haven't gotten that far yet so I guess I'll come back to this video once I get further into the story!
The best way to get individual cylinder that I found is to use Seven as the lead and Riki. Since they have horrible synergy with one another, you just pile in a lot of low% ether crystals and they will refine them to a higher percentage as well as let you actually keep them. This doesn't work quite as well if you have a 90+ % crystals but this has worked wonders for me.
I actually prefer to use Riki and Reyn as a double boost from Riki on a Strong flame each time gives crazy boosts making it much easier to get mega heats.
One thing I did on my first run: It happened that my Affinity between Nr. 7 and Melia was pretty bad due to the fact I never really tried them in the same team. So what I did was to lower their affinity to red (which is below the starting point) with gifts they didn't like. They are a very good team to seperate crystals in their respective single buffs and also, if you change them around, to slightly raise the percentage close to 100%. After having two cylinders close to 100, I changed to Shulk & Reyn, who were indeed Max Affinity, and then I almost certainly had the 300%.
idk if you know or not but you can get Gauntlets with a 45% Haste Gem and a weight of 1 called glory gauntlets. Really handy (pun not intended) since you can usually only equip Haste Gems on a weapon which keeps your valueable weapon slots free. Could be worth doing a video at some point on notable drops like that.
Was just gonna mention this. Haste is really important to have, and combined with Double Attack you'll be filling the talent gauge pretty fast. However, now that Attack Plus has been fixed it probably takes precedence over Double Attack for the weapon slot.
For crafting, Riki+Reyn easily outperforms Shulk+Reyn, because with Riki's shooter ability, at max affinity, you get anywhere from 20-30 turns, where Shulk only gives a max of 15 plus the rare chance of fever turns. In the original Riki was bugged to where he would only shoot a max of 15 times, but this was fixed in DE.
I'm in the end game of the main story. I've been fine with the setup that I have currently, but I always end up overthinking what I should have for the setup for each character.
What I do is get multiple gems with stats that I want, example Double Attack, Haste, Poison Plus, Blaze Up, Chill up, Debuff Resist, Spike Resist, and put 1 of each of those gems. Then I use Seven and Melia together. Seven's affinity gives you 3 cylinders from the start, and Melia has good Medium flame. You can end up getting 5 high quality cyclinders in one go that you can then use with Shulk/Reyn to get perfect gems.
I don't think much was said about crafting pairs and what they might be good at so my two cents are (always in shooter then engineer combo) Shulk and Reyn for early game single trait Megas but will need max affinity to consistently get to mega. Sharla and Shulk for early game cylinder making outclassed after getting Riki but useful til then. Sharla and Riki for mid-game cylinder crafting and far superior but make sure you scale the number of traits in one session to their affinity so you are less likely to overshoot and junk gems. Riki and Reyn for amazing single trait mega heating this is kind of busted once they get to max affinity though that will take a while and you might have to grind but is worth it and they can even mega two traits in one session with help. Add Shulk's fever skill link for extra broken glass. Fiora and Riki for cylinder crafting after joining your party since you get a fixed 3 cylinders for free and long sessions increase the RNG of your crafting goals Riki or Melia with Fiora is the best way to mega rare mining crystals though this will need high affinity and party support but are more likely to just take two rare crystals to mega than trying to break them into cylinders after you have max party affinity. There might be others but Dunban and Melia are the least useful at all stages of the game as Reyn does what Dunban does but more consistently as an engineer and his shooter ability is very unreliable in my experience though your mileage may vary and as Enal said medium flame is often the most useless so other than partnering with Fiora as the engineer to try and double mega rare crystals is just sub-optimal so don't use Melia.
I prefer Riki + Reyn in DE because they fixed Riki's shooter ability so that he properly shoots twice per turn. While Shulk + Reyn technically can provide the highest % possible with lots of fevers, I found Riki + Reyn to be far more consistent.
Having a low Affinity party member can also help to push that cylinder to 99% without it going over. Because they have less turns so it's a bit easier to manage.
Okay, let's see if I can get the following gems. Haste VI, Double Attack VI, Debuff Resist VI, Spike Defense VI, Topple Plus VI, Daze Plus VI, Unbeatable VI, Agility Up VI, Recovery Up VI, Revival HP Up VI, and Arts Heal VI.
I found a method to craft any top tier gem using 2 monster gems with the stat you want instead of 4: 1- Save your game. Take 1 monster gem with the stat you want + any other random monster gem without that stat. Use Shulk>Reyn to craft a trait with that stat (+40%). Load your previous save if you didn't get one. 2- Repeat step 1. 3- Save your game. Craft the 2 top tier gems with Riki>Sharla using the 2 traits and reaching +300% heat. Load the previous save if it didn't work. 4- Enjoy your top tier gems.
Shulk - Reyn is a decent combo due to how easy it is to increase affinity. But Riki - Reyn is true forging. Riki has Impatient Shooter which allows upgrades to be twice as fast. It’s more reliable than Shulk’s fever ability. Seven - Riki is great for pure separation. Seven - Melia is just as good as Sharla - Riki.
aw thanks for the shoutout dude
So I just need to farm Deinos Sauros gems. Thanks.

I really like your content of Xenoblade, when I found you doing your xenoblade chronicles 2 i was immediately hooked and bought a nintento switch just to play #2. i still haven't beat it lol but I bought this definitive edition soon as it came out. I really appreciate your content keep it up. cheers. Can't wait for your world records xD
Excellent guide! That's about all I can say, lol. Seeing this in video form helps me understand it better, and I was worried when some people said that you need low affinity between Sharla and Riki to make it work.
nah you can just load up on traits or savescum lol
@@EnelXC That's pretty good to know. I've also got a question, hope you don't mind. I've been looking at the datamine for the game and found spawn rates for the collectibles, so I'm attempting to make item maps similar to the ones we have for Xenoblade X...but I don't seem to have any luck figuring out the X,Y coordinates. Do you know anyone who could help with that? I posted on your discord server about it.
@@gmaster2647 yeah if you join the main xeno discord server and check out the datamine chat I'm sure some people there could help out.
Great work as always
How about a guide on rebuilding Colony 6 next? Items like Fossil Monkeys and Ice Cabbages don't seem to actually exist out in the field and it's super frustrating, it's quickly become my most hated quest in the game
Well believe it or not you can actually buy those items from the time attack mode lol...
I spent a fucking HOUR looking for one fossil monkey. I finally got it though
Enel
You genius
@@MrStarman926 it took me so long to find 3 black liver beans (one for the collectopedia, the other two for Colony 6). I'm pretty sure I searched the entirety of Bionis Interior at least four times before getting a second one... and then immediately got a third. I hate my luck sometimes.
Thanks for the spoilers about the seventh party member, I'll defiently watch this till I figure out who it is
All my friends tell me it's going to be the craziest shit ever, but I think I already figured it out and I cant wait to meet him
Him... or her... or they (could be gender neutral)
Just out of curiosity, who do you think it is? Also spoilers for anyone else who doesnt want to see the guess.

It's that one dude in Shulks dream saying some stupid shit about the true Monado. Also I think I saw him on snapchat add and he was running with the gang
If it's Poppi/KosMos/Elhaym(I mean Pyra/Mythra) I'll buy a second copy to show my devotion.
@@jamesa.646 Come back to this video when you discover whether you were right or wrong. I'm very eager to see your reaction!
Thanks for this guide! I'd gotten a bit rusty after not playing XC1 for so long, def needed this for a refresher. I also noticed you mention certain gems as being really useful when I'd never really thought of them as being so. Got me wondering, might you be able to do a tier list of sorts on gem effects? I think it would be really useful for people who would otherwise overlook very useful gems!
Been waiting for the gem crafting one! Yay!
I was just looking for a guide like this and there it is. Thanks!
Xenoblade DE is missing one massive thing that they could have added from XB2 QoL improvements:
Poppi
@@TARDISES thanks for that Info, but do DoTs stack? If for example Riki uses poison, is it overwritten/enhanced or just added to Melias poison?
I always use Shulk and Reyn, but I would never have thought to use Riki. Didn't realize party affinity was so crutial to the process.
Thanks for talking about the best gems. I had never thought about the attack plus gems. I thought it was only for auto attacks. I didn’t know every skill bases damage off of auto attack stat.
Just when I needed this!
I really enjoyed gaming this system back in the Wii days. I was able to use gem crafting to turn Seven into a full-blown auto-attack murder machine. With their haste buff on top, I had them doing nonstop autos and it was hilarious. :P
Thanks a lot for the guides Enel
Great tutorial. Even someone like who played the original two versions of the game could learn some new things.
Wow, whenever you play a game, you seem to know all about it and you beat it in 1 day
This might have been said but ironically the hardest gems to get mega heat are the rare mining crystals since they often have 3 or 4 traits and at max party affinity it is VERY rare to not overshoot the 100 purity rating and make a low-quality gem.
This is the best gem video I've seen! Thank you
One thing I found regarding medium flames.
3:53 any chance that shot of you pausing right before being stepped on by a sauros was intentional? Because that is peak perfectly cut comedy
when playing the first i liked having my affinity low between 2 certain people so i could get the incremental gains and be very careful with having them close to 100%
the gems close to %100 i mean
Yeah I purposely keep Riky and 7 affinity low to transform my ores with multiple interesting property into cylinders
Enel’s videos giving me good luck, got my first 400% while watching!
I know all of these things but I juet love talking about Xenoblade and listening everything Xenoblade:)
Great guides, trying to get the avalanche abaabsay to spawn thoun is a bit of nightmare, but hopefully now I'll be better equipped
Quite helpful. Whenever I make gems I tend to just mash A and hope for the best. Obviously that's not the best every time.
This doesn't work quite as well if you have a 90+ % crystals but this has worked wonders for me.
also if you want faster movement speed in areas with very few skip points i.e. alcamoth then craft some quick step gems
Ughh I can not describe the frustration of waiting to get the seventh party member so I can watch your guides
I'm sorry man LOL. it's about halfway so you'll get there :)
Really great guide. Thank you.
I actually prefer to use Riki and Reyn as a double boost from Riki on a Strong flame each time gives crazy boosts making it much easier to get mega heats.
One thing I did on my first run:
It happened that my Affinity between Nr.
THERE WE GO!
ALRIGHTY!
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY MINT! WOW!
Hey nice guides, would love some character build guides aswell!
I'll get those pretty soon!
Quick step is such a good gem to have equipped.
Didn't expect Attack Stability and Attack Plus to be that good. I mostly used Strength Up and Ether Up in the Wii version.
yeah they give you way bigger boosts to damage
What I do is get multiple gems with stats that I want, example Double Attack, Haste, Poison Plus, Blaze Up, Chill up, Debuff Resist, Spike Resist, and put 1 of each of those gems. Then I use Seven and Melia together. Seven's affinity gives you 3 cylinders from the start, and Melia has good Medium flame. You can end up getting 5 high quality cyclinders in one go that you can then use with Shulk/Reyn to get perfect gems.
Please make an in depth guide on how to get all the extra skill trees for each character
I don't think much was said about crafting pairs and what they might be good at so my two cents are (always in shooter then engineer combo)
Shulk and Reyn for early game single trait Megas but will need max affinity to consistently get to mega.
Fiora and Riki for cylinder crafting after joining your party since you get a fixed 3 cylinders for free and long sessions increase the RNG of your crafting goals
Riki or Melia with Fiora is the best way to mega rare mining crystals though this will need high affinity and party support but are more likely to just take two rare crystals to mega than trying to break them into cylinders after you have max party affinity.
Exactly, I'm so surprised that the video didn't recommend Riki at all. I get about about 95% Mega Heat with Reyn and Riki.
I'm trying to use your Sharla/Riki strat, but the rest of the team are CONSTANTLY popping up and pushing my gems past 100%.
So is there any reason to hang onto level 1 or 2 crystals/canisters? Close to being maxed out inventory.
I found a method to craft any top tier gem using 2 monster gems with the stat you want instead of 4:
1- Save your game.
After finishing all the gems in Xenoblade 3 I really miss this system for gem crafting...
headed to Bionis Interior the 2nd time so I stumbled across this at the perfect time
Where can I find some "Back attack up" gems/ crystals. Because I am searching for a while now and can't find any enemies with a drop chance.
Does "back atk gems" work with arts too? Prolly a dumb question but just making sure
Debuff resist does not prevent topple.
Also try using Rikki instead of Shulk when gem crafting.
Overall very informative guide.
both shulk and riki work fine, more people are likely to have shulk and reyn maxed so i used him for the video
Does it matter if you press the button versus holding down the button when you are crafting gems
When you say the Attack Plus was glitched in the "original game" which one is that exactly? The 3DS or Wii?
wii and 3ds.
@@EnelXC dude that SUCKS! lol I love my 3DS version. Guess I gotta buy the game on the Switch lol
Thank you!!! Please next make it a guide about characters
That will be coming soon i promise!
