Yeah the representation of men being murderers and torturing people is fine, but an under-dressed woman is controversial? You see Quiet earlier in the trailer being tortured whilst clothed so it's very apparent that she has been De-humanised and humiliated during torture. Please at least play Snake Eater before calling Kojima a "hack".
One of the things that people don't seem to realize is that the silly or sexual moments are there to relieve tension when things get a bit too harsh. He's actually stated this before in interviews. The moments are supposed to pull you out a bit before you get too stressed by the darker themes.
People could say they have sexualised men before in the games, too. If people are going to comment on the women, why does no one comment on that? Hideo Kojima said that Raiden was made to look the way he did because of fangirls. He recieved a letter from a girl that said she didn't like playing as an old man so he created something more appealing to females. No one talks about naked Raiden, no one talks about Snake having his shirt off. This game is trying to stir controversy. That's why the violence and gore is a lot more intense, that's why it's a lot more brutal. One might even describe it as "pointless". But that's the very point.

People seem to forget that the male character are every bit as sexualized as the female characters. Yes, kojima throws in fan service-ish moments with the female characters. But the ENTIRE series is a fanservice extravaganza. You have shirtless men everywhere, crouch grabbing, and Raiden ( who was made to appeal to women believe it or not)and etc. But you're also forgetting, The Boss, (a female)one of the most well respected, unsexualized, and strong characters in the entire series. Of course you didn't play that game thus the prejudice. Even as a fan I can understand people's problem with kojima sometimes. He's not the perfect artist by any means but he does have talent and I think he, like anyone, deserves the benefit of the doubt regardless of past actions. lastly, I don't know much but I think kojima mentioned that he said what he did about quiet to prove a point. He also mentioned that Quiet was made as a ANTITHESIS to over sexualized women or the sexist momement. Whatever that means........
I don't get why people are upset over a thong when you had to play as a Naked Raiden in MGS2...people didn't seem pissed then, but you add a bra and thong to a military outfit and people get disgusted...i truly don't get it...

My theory is that Quiet's skin is optic-camo, so she has to have it exposed so it can change colors. If you watch the first trailer you can see this happening on her face. At first I thought it was bad shadows on her face but after watching it over a few times I realized she had black face-paint that literally faded off as the camera panned up to her eye level. Maybe I am wrong, but watch that part and see what you think. Having her skin be like the octo-camo from MGS4 would fit in with the strange powers of MGS characters in the past and justify why she goes around naked in the desert. I hope her skin just keeps out UV rays too.
The Boss character from MGS3 was cool female character and not at all about objectiving. So hideo can do it. Just hold judgement until you played the game.

To me, the torture and child soldier theme it had going on wasn't very impactful, so that little bit of fanservice didn't feel all that jarring. But a person who is fully ready to be immersed in a dark story about war and child soldiers may find your typical video game fanservice to be jarring. Not saying your opinion is "wrong" mind you. You can be totally on the mark for all I know. But I feel one's opinion on whether Quiet's design crosses the line or not depends on whether you can take the trailer's theme seriously. You took torture and other controversial themes more seriously than I did.
IHate4Kids I think the difference is whether previous games' fanservice was as jarring. I'm not able to take this trailer's themes as seriously, hence I didn't find the fanservice as big a problem. Someone from Kotaku actually took Dragon's Crown story seriously, and they were put off by the fanservice as a result. I'm guessing here that Fraser took torture and child soldier as themes more seriously than we did.

You could say the same thing about Lara in Tomb Raider. There were a load of moments in which the camera would zoom in slightly while she was crouched, or the camera would angle under her when she would be hanging by a ledge. Yet she still turned out to be a fleshed out character, well written character. This could be the same thing with Quiet.

So because there's one character in the game that you don't like, that ruins the game/Kojima's reputation? Don't you think that's a little rash? I take it these guys have never invested some proper time into playing a Metal Gear game. MGS has to be one of the deepest most thought provoking franchise out there. If they do not see the amount of work that goes into one of these games then they aren't a true gamer. MGS never fails when it comes to graphics, gameplay and story telling and The Phantom Pain is no exception. The reason for the dark tone is because we see the demise of Big Boss or as Harvey Dent from Batman puts it ' You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.' MGS has a very deep plot to it. So deep it requires you to do further research by yourself (well at least i had to) so of course its going to be overwhelming and Fraser isn't gong to understand the darker theme to this game. What I respect Kojima for is that he's willing to take risks and try something different in each game. And other gaming companies get criticised for using the same formula again and again. I guess you can't please everyone. Just give it the time it deserves and you will appreciate it for the gem it truly is in the Gaming genre.

This game i believe is gonna prove a certain mind-set of a broken soldier...why we love and hate Big Boss...and what he will do to honor his fallen soldiers his way and that is what will be emotionally shocking to us is what will be Big Boss' choices through this game. Lots of history lessons about nuclear weapons, the black market arms industry, genetic engineering, etc. that ends up slowing the main story down. Fraser I'm curious but have played all 4 MGS games? This is not the first sexy female character in war time. There is Eva for example from MGS3. I played MGS 1 for 80 hours+ one highschool summer. I loved it. Sniper Wolf was one of my favourite characters and still is. This rant is about the established mood and my subjective assessment of the mood/context. At no point in MGS 1 did I feel that I was playing a serious war drama; It felt too intentionally melodramatic for that. But everything I have seen and felt from the MGS V imagery makes me feel very contemplative and solemn about the violence and setting. That is what is creating the whiplash I feel with thong-zoom shots.

I can't say anything about "current" Hideo Kojima, honestly but I freaking love the original MGS on the PS1 as well as Snake Eater, which is amongst the Top-5 of my favorite games of all time. MGS 2 was meh in retrospective and while MGS 4 was awesome, it could have been even awesomer, if the cutscenes (especially the briefings) weren't so damn long. I never could get into Peace Walker, nor Ground Zeroes, to be honest. Still, I'm gonna give Phantom Pain a try, the trailer was awesome (god, I love that song). By the way, I don't think MGS was all melodrama. I won't deny that there is some, but there are also a lot of legitimately sad scenes and situations. Snake Eater in particular had some extremely powerful and moving scenes and the ending actually made me cry.

As everyone is fond to point out (Including Fraser). Metal Gear Solid has always been a mix of melodrama/sex appeal/camp and Dark/Violent. I think for Kojima those things are on the same dial. When he turns the dark and gritty up he also turns the campy sex appeal up. Which is why you go from Sniper Wolf from the first game in an open jacket with no bra on in a snowy environment to Quiet in a bra and thong in the desert. Quiet isn't the first character to be made to appeal to a certain audience. Raiden was created cause Japanese women couldn't find Solid Snake attractive. That's one of the reasons at least.

People seem to forget that the male character are every bit as sexualized as the female characters. Yes, kojima throws in fan service-ish moments with the female characters. But the ENTIRE series is a fanservice extravaganza. You have shirtless men everywhere, crouch grabbing, and Raiden ( who was made to appeal to women believe it or not)and etc. But you're also forgetting, The Boss, (a female)one of the most well respected, unsexualized, and strong characters in the entire series. Of course you didn't play that game thus the prejudice. Even as a fan I can understand people's problem with kojima sometimes. He's not the perfect artist by any means but he does have talent and I think he, like anyone, deserves the benefit of the doubt regardless of past actions. lastly, I don't know much but I think kojima mentioned that he said what he did about quiet to prove a point. My theory is that Quiet's skin is optic-camo, so she has to have it exposed so it can change colors. If you watch the first trailer you can see this happening on her face. At first I thought it was bad shadows on her face but after watching it over a few times I realized she had black face-paint that literally faded off as the camera panned up to her eye level. Maybe I am wrong, but watch that part and see what you think.
Having her skin be like the octo-camo from MGS4 would fit in with the strange powers of MGS characters in the past and justify why she goes around naked in the desert. I hope her skin just keeps out UV rays too.

This is just my guess, but I think the reaction to Quiet's outfit is based on one's reaction to the trailer's themes. To me, the torture and child soldier theme it had going on wasn't very impactful, so that little bit of fanservice didn't feel all that jarring. But a person who is fully ready to be immersed in a dark story about war and child soldiers may find your typical video game fanservice to be jarring.
Not saying your opinion is "wrong" mind you. You can be totally on the mark for all I know. But I feel one's opinion on whether Quiet's design crosses the line or not depends on whether you can take the trailer's theme seriously. You took torture and other controversial themes more seriously than I did.
IHate4Kids I think the difference is whether previous games' fanservice was as jarring. I'm not able to take this trailer's themes as seriously, hence I didn't find the fanservice as big a problem. Someone from Kotaku actually took Dragon's Crown story seriously, and they were put off by the fanservice as a result. I'm guessing here that Fraser took torture and child soldier as themes more seriously than we did.
G1ingy I feel the theme of rape and child soldiers is jarring to me because I have experienced it so seldom in fiction, and I am afraid that one of my only experiences with it will be from the man who brought me VR mission upskirt minigames.

You could say the same thing about Lara in Tomb Raider. There were a load of moments in which the camera would zoom in slightly while she was crouched, or the camera would angle under her when she would be hanging by a ledge. Yet she still turned out to be a fleshed out character, well written character. This could be the same thing with Quiet.
Don't mind this one having a darker tone. This is Big Boss's decent into madness. Also really like the song in the trailer.

So because there's one character in the game that you don't like, that ruins the game/Kojima's reputation? Don't you think that's a little rash? Can't a game have a few elements you don't like but still be great? Forgive me if I'm putting words in your mouth Frasher, I'm just saying what it seems like you're implying. Just wait till game comes and you play the entire game yourself before you make such assumptions. Maybe Quiet will be a very well written character and fleshed out character. She might end up being so awesome that you forget about what she's wearing. That's all I'm asking and I think at the end of the day, that what all us fans want you to do. I take it these guys have never invested some proper time into playing a Metal Gear game. MGS has to be one of the deepest most thought provoking franchise out there. If they do not see the amount of work that goes into one of these games then they aren't a true gamer. MGS never fails when it comes to graphics, gameplay and story telling and The Phantom Pain is no exception. The reason for the dark tone is because we see the demise of Big Boss or as Harvey Dent from Batman puts it ' You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.'
MGS has a very deep plot to it. So deep it requires you to do further research by yourself (well at least i had to) so of course its going to be overwhelming and Fraser isn't gong to understand the darker theme to this game. What I respect Kojima for is that he's willing to take risks and try something different in each game. And other gaming companies get criticised for using the same formula again and again. I guess you can't please everyone.
Just give it the time it deserves and you will appreciate it for the gem it truly is in the Gaming genre.

Well, apparently the whole dressed down female character is going to be explained within the story of the game.
This game i believe is gonna prove a certain mind-set of a broken soldier...why we love and hate Big Boss...and what he will do to honor his fallen soldiers his way and that is what will be emotionally shocking to us is what will be Big Boss' choices through this game.
Ps: Hideo Kojima has no limits...there is no such thing as limits when it comes to the MGS series

Lots of history lessons about nuclear weapons, the black market arms industry, genetic engineering, etc. that ends up slowing the main story down. There's a lot that could afford to be chopped, but the problem I have is ppl not giving credit where credit is due. He HAS made some great games and I feel it's just become trendy and popular to shit on him.
Fraser you addressed the anger people had over the sexual assault Lara Croft was going to experience in the latest game saying that every other medium addresses such issues and for video games to be taken seriously they need to address these same issues or they will forever be seen as childish instead of an art form. I think that is exactly the same thing Kojima is trying to do with this game with the use of brutal scenes that will make your gut wrench in disgust because of how real it looks and makes you feel. Sure it's awful especially that it's being done to children but I remember being angry for a month at a TV show for shooting a child, It may sound silly but I was just astounded they could do something like that on TV. People discuss how jaded society is to violence nowadays and some people blame video games for that, I do not think that is true and the fact that there are developers out there trying to make you feel rather than just skip over the repercussions of violence shows that that assertion is untrue.

I played MGS 1 for 80 hours+ one highschool summer. I loved it. Sniper Wolf was one of my favourite characters and still is. This rant is about the established mood and my subjective assessment of the mood/context. At no point in MGS 1 did I feel that I was playing a serious war drama; It felt too intentionally melodramatic for that. But everything I have seen and felt from the MGS V imagery makes me feel very contemplative and solemn about the violence and setting. That is what is creating the whiplash I feel with thong-zoom shots.

Eaglesolidus I know this is a year old post but Quiet wears less clothes to use her ability which can be seen in the Quiet trailer for Mgs V: TPP. The torture you see in this is trailer is the torturer making her wear clothes so she can't escape.

I can't say anything about "current" Hideo Kojima, honestly but I freaking love the original MGS on the PS1 as well as Snake Eater, which is amongst the Top-5 of my favorite games of all time. MGS 2 was meh in retrospective and while MGS 4 was awesome, it could have been even awesomer, if the cutscenes (especially the briefings) weren't so damn long. I never could get into Peace Walker, nor Ground Zeroes, to be honest. Still, I'm gonna give Phantom Pain a try, the trailer was awesome (god, I love that song).
By the way, I don't think MGS was all melodrama. I won't deny that there is some, but there are also a lot of legitimately sad scenes and situations. Snake Eater in particular had some extremely powerful and moving scenes and the ending actually made me cry.

This is like saying the boss is overly sexualized after seeing some screenshots of her costume in the final fight. You don't know the full story.
As everyone is fond to point out (Including Fraser). Metal Gear Solid has always been a mix of melodrama/sex appeal/camp and Dark/Violent. I think for Kojima those things are on the same dial. When he turns the dark and gritty up he also turns the campy sex appeal up. Which is why you go from Sniper Wolf from the first game in an open jacket with no bra on in a snowy environment to Quiet in a bra and thong in the desert. Quiet isn't the first character to be made to appeal to a certain audience. Raiden was created cause Japanese women couldn't find Solid Snake attractive. That's one of the reasons at least.
Should have watched the full trailer more stuff happens after the title with speech from Big Boss and Kaz... and you see other stuff including a METAL GEAR!
