Metal Gear is probably the most complex video game story outside of maybe Kingdom Hearts. There are six main games in Metal Gear Solid with two games on the MSX. Phantom Pain refers to a lot of different things in the game since the main character, Venom Snake, does suffer from phantom pain in more ways than one considering he also lost his arm. You don't see it because he has a cybernetic prosthetic that he can upgrade to do insane things.
The series started in 1987 and while it's still going on, people consider it dead because its original creator, Hideo Kojima, left Konami due to internal disputes. It follows multiple different characters who all go by the name of Snake - you might remember Snake from Super Smash Bros. Each Snake is related to one another in some way, either through biology or through ideology and they are usually trained by the previous Snake. This is a game where no one is a good guy, not because everyone is a scumbag or wants world domination but because everyone works for the true villains without realizing it. Essentially, the world of Metal Gear Solid is run by the Patriots, a shadowy organization not unlike the Illuminati who manipulate global conflicts. Every time you see a battle between hero and villain in a Metal Gear game, almost always both characters work for the Patriots (unknowingly) and battle each other on behalf of their leaders believing they're doing what's best for the world.
This series is extremely strange since it jumps genres all the time and shifts its tone from extremely serious and grounded in reality to campy and satirical. It's famous for its fourth wall breaks that rival Deadpool using his health bar in UMVC3, but people mostly remember it for the deep, philosophical discussions and the hour-long cutscenes. There's so much lore in this game that it may even rival Warhammer, but there is a 40-minute video by the Leaderboard that explains the entire timeline chronologically. It doesn't do the best job of explaining everything since it mostly hits bullet points, but when you have a series as long and as dense as Metal Gear, those bullet points still take almost an hour to get through. Watching that video explains the guy with the Zoro Mask (Skull Face), the guy with one arm (Miller), and the guy with the shrapnel sticking from his head (Venom Snake) as well as all the other characters in the series. However, I will warn you that this game takes some crazy loops. The story begins in the 1960s Cold War and ends in 2020s as you follow Patriots' schemes to maintain their control over the world, each Snake you play working as their top man without realizing it. It's a truly tragic story but there are a lot of emotional highs to balance out the lows, and there is a happy ending to this story.

The original reveal trailer for phantom pain was nuts. This e3 trailer was the first time that more of the world and vision was shown the year after. The hype was pretty crazy.

After this, I strongly recommend watching the Red Band trailer for this game; it shows some gameplay, themes and plots.
“Lingua Franca” refers to the concept of a language adopted by several different cultures; a contemporary analogue would be American English as it’s a prevalent language for business and somewhat applicable to travel. MGSV, and the MGS series in general, is very much an anti-war, anti-nuclear proliferation and anti-colonial series. Language is used to dominate smaller cultures and over time effectively wipe them out by lingua franca. One example that comes to mind (I can’t source this as this was explained to me by a fellow student at university) is how in English the word “green” describes green, but only one shade, whereas in native languages there are several words for greens of different shades that match their geographical location e.g. the color green of a specific plant when sunlight shines upon it.
The games are very much a parody of action games and while you’re provided lethal means to progress, it’s encouraged to play more sneakily and/or non-lethal methods.

    • @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames

Thanks for going over Lingua Franca for us. And explaining how the language aspect fit into this since we were curious 🙂

    • @wetnoodlex
      @wetnoodlex 2 роки тому +4

Interesting concept for sure, but to be accurate, there are several words that describe different shades of green in the English language. Many of these words exist both as a hue of green such as lime or olive or fern, but they also are names for objects as well. I don't know if your associate would consider this the same as how you describe shades of a color in your language.

@@wetnoodlex That's not really the same thing. Any language can have descriptions for different hues, but there are some languages where different shades of green are considered different colors, like how in English orange is a different color from red, as well as pink. In some languages, "green" would be as vague a grouping as orange, red, and pink under one word.

I’d definitely watch some more MGSV trailers, there are some really good ones, most of them have great music too. Kojima has good taste when it comes to accompanying tracks and they even licensed a bunch of period appropriate songs for the game that you can steal from cassette players in enemy camps. Then you can play them while you’re doing Cold War spy stuff. In this game you have like, a dedicated helicopter that you can upgrade and use for a bunch of different tactics, but one thing you can do with it is put a speaker on it and have it blare any music you’ve got. So it can do bombing runs to “Born in the USA” and “The Final Countdown.” Which is pretty fun.

Metal gear solid is the type of game series where it could still be difficult to piece together, even after you've exhaustively dedicated yourself to the series, played everything, and did your best to take in the cutscenes (up to hour long at times too, and they're essential to the plot).
The series started all the way back in the days of NES and Famicom, when it was just called Metal Gear. But even then, the events in those first games aren't what happened first in the story.

Yes. Language was the way. If one person was the fundamentally change or control what we used to communicate, then we would only follow not disobey or rebel. But it is not like that because language is not confirmed or set. But what if it was. That's what Phantom Pain is trying to express: The power of Language or communication. It is a very deep argument.

As people have commented already, all the MGS games (besides Survive that came after Hideo Kojima was removed from the studio) have underlying themes such as these. The kind of world order concept that the antagonists either upend or embrace, and your place as Big Boss or Snake. I definitely recommend the Red-Band trailer, since it's about 9 minutes long and really gets into some of the themes and characters there-in. MGS5 specifically has a lot of themes that are good for newer players. MGS games in general don't require the past games to be played, especially since they jump around the timeline in each one. MGS5 takes place in the 80s, but MGS3 in the 60s. MGS4 is in 2014, and the spin-off Revengence in 2020. The more you play, the more you understand and the more characters like Ocelot, the revolver-spinning guy in the trailer, fit in to the world. There's so many double-agents and triple-agents and competing interests...that the best places to be are new players and veterans, simple because knowing nothing and knowing everything is so much easier to comprehend what you're given. But yea...give the red-band trailer a peek sometime. It's a bit brutal, but nothing as bad as the Mortal Kombat games. More disturbing than gross, if that makes sense. :)

The storyline in metal gear solid is ridiculously good and outstanding it speaks on the philosophies of a soldier who’s dream to create a nation independent of others. For people who live on the battlefield The plot twist always confuses you but if you play the game in chronological order it makes perfect sense but there’s a lot to go through the main protagonist. Solid snake and his twin brother Liquid snake. Who are by products of a cloning project from the original naked snake who’s known as big boss. This series is probably the most philosophical game ever created especially for soldiers who can relate to a lot to it excluding the fictional aspects about it

This is wiki's interpretation of Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain: Premise
In the aftermath of the events of Ground Zeroes and the destruction of Militaires Sans Frontières (commonly abbreviated as MSF), Big Boss (Kiefer Sutherland/Akio Ōtsuka) falls into a coma.Nine years later, he awakens and helps lead a new mercenary group, Diamond Dogs.[28] Adopting the codename "Venom Snake", he ventures into Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War and the Angola-Zaire border region during the Angolan Civil War to track down the men responsible for MSF's destruction. Along the way, he becomes reacquainted with his former rival Ocelot (Troy Baker/Satoshi Mikami) and encounters Quiet (Stefanie Joosten), an assassin and sniper with supernatural abilities. While he and Kazuhira Miller (Robin Atkin Downes/Tomokazu Sugita) are initially driven to exact revenge, Snake soon unearths a plot by the Patriots organization to develop a new model of the Metal Gear system known as the ST-84 "Sahelanthropus".

The thing about MGS is that you can't really understand a single thing unless you've played the games. And even if you have played them you probably won't understand EVERYTHING until you've played them multiple times AND watched some explanation videos on youtube. So much twists and turns and some bat shit crazy stuff in there.

@Definitely Not Definitive - Games The Red Band trailer really is a red band one. I remember i was in shock by the end of it. Highly Recommend.
One very very very curious thing about this game is that the entire worldwide community HAD to work together to unlock a very specific achievment in the game:
-At some point forward in the game you're allowed to have online gameplay with other people, where you sneak into other online player Main Base and steal/sabotage their resources.
That said, further on in the game you are able to produce/steal/maintain Nuclear Warheads.
The game had a secret, unbelievably near-impossible hidden cutscene that was only going to be shown AFTER ALL THE NUCLEAR WARHEADS FROM ALL THE PLAYERS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD were decomissioned.
The challenge was taken by the Playstation 3 Metal Gear Community, that got together and managed to decomission all the Nuclear Warheads from the Playstation 3 Servers. And they did it.
Above the War related Story, Metal Gear is essentially a anti-nuclear, anti-war message.
The bad side of this Game is that Konami fired the director, Hideo Kojima, and stumbled on the story near the end, when Kojima wasn't there anymore overseeing the project things got sloppy.
My favourite Metal Gear Solid game is the Third one, Snake Eater.

From the same creator of Silent Hills PT and Death Stranding. Hideo Kojima. Metal Gear Solid is a fantastic series. You should definitely check out the red band trailer as it shows just how gruesome war is. Hideo Kojima has expressed his frustration making a game of war in Japan, since there Cero rating has to have the game be censored a lot. In one particular scene Big Boss has to take out a bomb that's inside a woman. In Japan they don't see the blood and the incision made to the woman it's all let out of frame. While in the US we see the whole process. Hideo has stated that it ruins the immersion and story having to censor or leave out bloody moments of war.

Warhammer actually touches up on this topic of controlling a population via limitation of language/communication.
To sum it up, if you dumb down a population to be unable to communicate and articulate their thoughts and feelings, it makes it damn near impossible to teach and learn anything let alone organize to fight against a tyrannical leadership.
In the 40k universe, it’s stipulated that a divide in language via high/low gothic is how governments micromanage colony worlds; one of the many reasons some worlds in the 40k universe is still stuck in medieval times despite there being a literal space station above them.
For MGS, their theme is to spread a virus which effectively destroys its host via speaking a language. Take English for example: if you were to say any English word you’d start spreading something like the Black Plague which would effectively render those infected with this language parasite a mute due to fear of spreading a disease.

Man I'm glad I never saw this trailer. I feel like it included a scene from almost every cutscene ^^ (Finished playing this game 1 week ago) It was my first metal gear game and I really enjoyed it (Though I had to look up some stuff from the other games). Only thing that threw me off in the beginning is that the main character is voiced by Kiefer Sutherland and like 1 month before starting the game I had finished all 9 season of 24 for the first time. So in the beginning I only heard Jack Bauer.

The dude at the beginning is Punished Snake, previous call name Naked Snake and later he will be known as "Big Boss". In Phantom Pain he's actually the players character.
The shrapnel "horn" you can see protruding from his skull is from an accident he was in earlier, but it is also used as a game mechanic. The more "evil" you are, the bigger the "horn" gets.
The fewer people you kill, the better decisions you make, the less injured Snake seems on this scene and the fragment doesn't portrude as much = smaller horn.
Language is a major part of this game's themes, plot and even game mechanics for plot reasons I shouldn't spoil here why, or how. It seems like an indifferent detail until it becomes relevant.
Les Enfants Terrible (The Terrible Children) is a genetic project to create super soldiers. This is the project that created Liquid, Solid and Solidus Snakes (Later became the POTUS and raised Jack "Raiden" The Ripper in the Liberian Civil War as a child soldier) using Big Boss' DNA as BB was seen as the greatest soldier at the time.
Is Big Boss/Punished Snake the good guy? That's a difficult question to answer. He's a troubled character that yearns for freedom away from world dominating powers and thus creates a 'Haven' for soldiers that no nation wants, cast outs, mercenaries. He definitively is the antagonist in the first Metal Gear game and multiple games after, but saying he's the bad guy is too simplistic. Similar to Darth Vader. Yes, he's the main antagonist when we first hear and meet him, but that wasn't always the case and even then there are nuances.
To avoid spoilers, I included one MASSIVE piece of misinformation regarding Punished Snake's identity.

Oh metal gear, such a good series. Playwise the franchise goes MGS3, peacewalker, 5 ground zeroes and phantom pain, metal gear, metal gear 2, Metal gear solid 1, metal gear solid 2, MGS4 and Revengeance. By the way that is a piece of shrapnel in Snake’s head, it can cause problems in gameplay when an explosion happens close to you. It’s just shallow enough to not cause serious damage but to deep to remove without pretty much killing him

Metal Gear is a series that is a mistake to jump into a later entry, but it's not completely out of the question. The gameplay is stellar and (in most of the games) there's a singular theme that can carry the plot even if there's a lot of call-back to events from previous titles. From MGS1 to 5, "Gene, Meme, Scene, Sense, Peace, and Race." Hideo Kojima's writing is often criticized for driving his point home to an absurd degree, but there's something loveable about how enthusiastic he is about it.
Metal Gear is a series worth playing through. There's no other games like it.
