Every now and then I get questions about how to load a Colt 1873 black powder revolver replica, and in this video I'll demonstrate how to do so. Unlike most other cap and ball revolvers, this gun does not have a loading lever so alternative loading procedures are required. Thanks for watching, enjoy.

Just bought one of these manufactured by Pietta in 1999. Fit and finish is great compared to what I’ve heard about Piettas 90’s quality. Has a mirror polished hammer with correct checkering, deep rich blue, and very beautiful blue case color hardening. Also came with a set of faux ivory grips. Cost me half of what a new one costs. Still my best purchase to this day.

Outstanding test video Mr. Black Powder Shooter 44, Ben!
The impact of my 36 caliber VKV SMLGUB 145 380 videography is amazing!
A few years back one man obtained my predecessor bullet of my current 145 grain Universal Bullet, the 140 grain 377 diameter and using a Pietta 1861 Navy with an 8 inch barrel with the cylinder chambers filled up to the brim with Pyrodex P powder shot a 152 pound Wild Boar at 7 Yards in the ear, he followed up with one more 140 grain round at 7 feet in the ear which killed the beast "Dead Right There". So as we see the 36 caliber is a capable potent caliber. My 35 caliber Universal RFN bullets give the 36 the most capability for the Hunter, Camper, Hiker in Wilderness Defense situations especially with the plague of roaming marauding packs of Coyotes.
I Thank You Very Much, Ben, for Your Excellent Dedicated work in testing the potential destructive effect of my 36 Caliber Universal Bullet on a target.
All of my custom 6 cavity 36 caliber 145 grain 380 diameter molds and the 44/45 caliber ,220/240/255 grain 6 cavity molds are all in stock available for immediate shipment in the USA, Canada and Europe.
I got to say your craftsmanship is exceptional and you got a good thing going with your custom revolver presentation boxes. Maybe you should consider making Full Storage Boxes or Loading/Storage Stands, a Case like an Armory where people can store their percussion revolvers knifes etc.
Best Wishes, Keep up the good work, Safe Journeys!

The right size bullet is dependent on the diameter of the chamber in the cylinder. Some of these .44 cal revolvers fit .454's better, where others could require a .457, for example. The only viable option if you love the gun design, not if you love shooting.
An 1860 Army shoots the same ammunition and does it a lot better than a percussion 1873. The 1873 was designed for metallic cartridges, so the cylinder was bored through and the entire length employed to hold the charge. To create a percussion version, you have to add metal back into the cylinder to hold the loose gunpowder, making the chambers in the cylinder ridiculously small.
The 1873 Percussion simply cannot hold as much powder as an 1860 Army revolver does. The cylinder is too short (it's shorter than the one in a .36 caliber Colt Navy!)

You have a proper powder flash why not just powder directly from it? The volumetric spouts screw on and off, or you can cut that one down to throw the volumetric charge of 25 grains, but black powder and all substitutes are made to throw by volume so the volume your spout throws with one matches the others regardless of grain weight.
You place your fingertip over the end of the spout, open the valve with your thumb, and turn it upside down to let powder fill the spout, then close the valve and tilt by up - you have the proper amount in your spout. The method you're using isn't giving you any better accuracy so why complicate the process.

The only cool thing about these is if someone made a conversion kit to shoot cartridges, but apparently Pietta makes these so that converting them to cartridges is near impossible. I would like to see more C&B revolvers not based off historical designs (Ruger did a great job with their Old Army) I know there's a company in the UK (don't know their name sadly) that makes double action C&B revolvers with modern designs and materials. Can't imagine they're cheap, but they are interesting.

I believe they make it this way so that people in the UK can buy these and actually say it's a black powder firearm. If I was able to just pop a cartridge cylinder in there then of course it would be a cartridge gun that can shoot black powder as well which would be great, but the laws over there don't allow standard firearms for the most part, as we know. Thanks for watching!

@@blackpowdershooter44 Actually, from what I've gathered, cartridge converted cap and ball revolvers are okay to own and don't require a second license.
My guess is the reason Pietta went out of their way to make these unable to hold a cartridge cylinder is they made these many years after they had started manufacturing the 1851's and 1858's and other true C&B revolvers, then other companies started making cylinders for them where people could shoot smokeless ammo from them and Pietta was like, "WTF? Ok, if you're gonna do that, we'll make this so you can't shoot anything but black powder."

Uh, A-L-L 1873 Peacemaker Frame revolvers, of whatever brand, and whether it's a cartridge OR percussion cap pistol, should ALWAYS LOAD FIVE (5) , N-E-V-E-R - 6 ! For Example, this is why Ruger quit making the single action old model 3 screw, .22, .357, .44, etc and designed a transfer bar safety for the revolver because ignorant, inexperienced shooters kept loading 6 and accidentally firing a load! STUPID! On the 4 click models,
A-L-W-A-Y-S keep the hammer back ''1 Click''
''KNOWLEDGE'' is also a ''Safety'' ! There are MANY variations of the 1873 peacemaker, whether it's the original Colt, the 1970s Virginian Dragoon, Ruger with adjustable sights, Uberti, who by the way, makes an excellent reproduction, & several others. The point is, they are all based on the Colt 1873 Peacemaker Frame (or the Army M1873 until almost the end of the 19th century) Incidentally, Ruger modified the design by removing the double leaf spring and replacing it with coil springs! However, I have made my own leaf springs out of feeler gauge leafs. But instead of ONE THICK SPRING like came with the gun that always breaks, I stack about 5 or 6 thinner ''feeler gauge leafs'' together! Which hardy ever break. Use a Dremel to make the springs, and keep and use the original hole in the feeler gauge for the screw. If you'd much rather replace the broken spring with store bought, go ahead. I NEVER do though
