    Guns of the West channel did the same chrono test with BP and Pyrodex P which gave the same result as yours. Another less realised advantage of Pyrodex is it's lighter than BP, therefore giving more shots per lb. I've used both and prefer Pyrodex. As for what folks say about Pyrodex rusts guns to dust in an hour....rubbish, it's no worse than BP. What's important is to clean the gun thoroughly after use.

      Another advantage is Pyrodex is readily available, though I tend to prefer Triple Seven. Save the real black powder for flintlock !!.

      @Gupa-jw4zz perhaps that and cost per cylinder are the biggest advantages. Thanks

      @@Gupa-jw4zz I used to use 777 exclusively until the law changed here in the UK placing it in the same category as BP = an 'explosive' , not a 'propellent' as it was before. This means obtaining a special explosives licence to purchase BP & 777 .....also a special wooden box to store them in. Neither are required to buy or store for Pyrodex or Smokeless powder. Then there's the price. Pyrodex = £46 per lb. 777 = £67 per lb. 😠. Finally, I get better accuracy with Pyrodex than 777.

      @@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb My theory about why Pyrodex gives a higher velocity is this. If you read Hodgdon's Data sheet, the 3 main ingredients are the same as black powder, only they add others (some of which are secret) to retard the burn rate. The difference is noticeable if you light identical volumes of each in a string with a taper. The slower burn rate of Pyrodex gives the projectile longer to accelerate down the bore. I suspect it's also possible the faster burning BP loses slightly more pressure through the gap between the cylinder and barrel. It's like comparing fast burning pistol and slow burning smokeless rifle powders.

      Greetings, jstone, I have a question / request, though it might be a little off-topic. I am curious about your leather gear: primarily holsters. Your revolvers seam to slide in and out with ease. What brand holster do you prefer? How do you break one in, or do you? You get the idea: it's all part of the hobby. Also, I have never seen another shooter who wears cross-draw but uses the strong side hand as you do. There has to be a story there. Your videos and positive information are a delight. Keep it up, please.

    • @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb
      @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb  3 місяці тому +1

      @user-nm3rj6wd5c hey thanks! So here’s what I have. My holsters are various brands from Dixie gun works that loop over my 3”belt. They are designed for long barrel single action revolvers. My guns slide cause I use it a lot! My belt is the most important part…it’s a leather powder belt from Historical Emporium online. No cartridge loops. It’s 3” wide and it is sturdy. Now my carry style…cross draw on string side is actually called the plains draw or cavalry draw. The cavalry used this cause it was easier to carry on the saddle..the string side twist draw is as fast or faster than butt to rear (long barrel comes out of the holster smoother) and…if your strong hand gets wounded you can use it as a weak hand cross draw. It was very prominent in post civil war on the plains. Google the cavalry or plains draw and you’ll find stuff on it. My holsters are all $30 bucks or less. Now the buskadero carry like Matt Dillon where the holster attaches through a loop only happens in the movies so I never went with it. This sounds like a good video topic. Great and interesting question. If my answer is unclear ask first clarification. Thanks

    Interesting test. Appreciate you taking the time to conduct it burning some precious gunpowder ..👍😏
    I've been shooting BP weapons for 64 years now. When Pyrodex first came out in the 70s, I tried it, and grew to like it. When American Pioneer Powder arrived, I tried it too. Remarkably clean burning and requires no lubricant on any bullet style. Great in cartridges too. A bit harder to ignite, especially in flintlocks (must use ffff BP in the pan) but it's great powder. If you want to eliminate powder fouling like in your Remington revolvers, APP is your best choice. Now I tried 777 powder, but stopped using it due to it being too hot, raising pressure levels I didn't care for. Further, it was highly susceptible to absorb moisture, causing rusting issues in weapons.
    I get a kick outta watching you blast away with your pistols. You are definitely enjoying it. Thanks for sharing your passion for the old caplock revolvers! 👍

    Cleaned between cylinders? I have a suspicion that fouling may reduce available volume in both cylinders and bore, increasing pressure and, therefore, velocity. Just a suspicion, and now that you've put the idea in my head, I can check that out for myself, except my cannister of Pyrodex is 20-30 years old - that's a variable I don't need to add.

  • @waynestormer7774
    @waynestormer7774 3 місяці тому +1

    Definitely a fun video but is a bit misleading as there are a great many variables you didn't take into account. One is unless you load the chambers with the exact same measured compression consistency with the black powder. It has been seen that Pyrodex doesn't need the same degree of slight compression that black powder performs best with. Another important fact and observation is they increased the potency of the Pyrodex Pistol powder from what it used to be...to increase sales and profits. It still isn't anywhere as potent as the Triple 7 powder though. Another observation with fouling with Pyrodex is both CAUSTIC and corrosive doing so faster and hardens more sooner. Black powder is only corrosive and not as fast acting. One has to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. Use what one likes, but regardless of what one uses, cleaning should be done immediately afterwards. It isn't that hard.

    • @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb
      @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb  3 місяці тому

      I thought about compression consistency but I’m also not in a lab so I tried but who knows. But for everyday use conditions this is valid on this gun, on this day, with this chrono and those conditions. I do agree, cleaning is a must!!!! Thanks

      Not misleading at all stop crying!

  • @chuckjones9939
    @chuckjones9939 Місяць тому

    I like the idea of comparing the different powders, but using volume is misleading. The powder is sold by weight. Charges should all be weighed accurately to be a valid comparison. This goes for different brands and grain sizes of real black powder also. Some powders are more dense than others. The volumes don’t weigh the same. That’s one of the reasons Swiss black powder is more powerful than Goex. It is more dense and you actually get more powder in the same measure. Please do the same test again, and weigh each charge to get a more accurate comparison.

  • @jsharp1776

    Wow you had a much higher velocity with pyrodex than I did. You averaged about 200 fps faster. Where my test with my dragoon 44 was much closer about 100 fps faster with pyrodex. Over the Swiss black powder, with equal loads of 50 grains of each.

      Reliable? They all go off everytime. Reliable in terms of similar feel … probably not. It brings more punch that BP grain per grain. But…I’m not sure one is more reliable than the other. I like them both…but shoot pyrodex more mainly for economics. And at distance I like the extra punch

    • @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb
      @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb  3 місяці тому

      That’s a good question. Could be loading lever compression differences…uneven powder quality. Beyond that I have no idea. Everything else was the same (grains loaded, ball size, wad and caps. Prolly need to do it again and see if it tightens up.

    • @cdarrinford
      @cdarrinford 3 місяці тому

      @CapBallFanatic-gb3jb large spreads like that really affect your accuracy. Try actually weighing the powder for each chamber to eliminate that as a variable. You can also mark a line on your rammer to use as a seating depth indicator. Normally, you shouldn't have more than 40ish fps on the spread. It could be a really good video series.
