That is WAAAY more involved than the Funnyplaying IPS displays. I'm still a novice, and I think that is a little beyond me for now, but I agree that there is something magical about the OG display.
6:49 Quick hack. When you have both layers up, wedge something like a credit card underneath and move it around while pushing slowly. When you do it like that, there is also little risk at breaking the glas because of too much pressure. You just have to remove some glue afterwards. I just did this for the first time following your tutorial. Now the cleaning and soldering begins. Thanks for that!
Thanks! That was a good guide. It brought back traumatic memories of doing my own. Lifting the pins was a pain in the .. and the sticky polarizer was impossible to install without a bit of dust and bubbles. Not really noticeable when it is on though. I believe the early DMG models all had Phillips and not tri-wing, maybe the first year or so. I have one, seems to be identical in other ways though. I like the DMG, they have a certain charm you don't get with a modern display. 10-year-old me would have been in heaven with a backlit screen!
I'll stick to my old school green tea, rather than modern mountain dew, but still good to know how this is considered a "simple mod". Also just buy one used, save your time.
I did this one a couple years ago on my original gameboy and loved it, but some games it still doesnt have the clarity I'd like so I'm going to do an ips. Actually just emailed funnyplaying yesterday and theyre working on a laminated ips kit for the DMG (and have been for the best part of a year at least), so if anyone is considering an ips I'd wait for that kit to come out and see how it compares to the current ones available.
This one definitely drained some of my confidence with modding, thought id give it a go since i was planning an IPS swap anyway and had 2 disposable screens with horizontal lines, the side ribbon cable pulled away from the screen on the first attempt and the second attempt the screen bled, safe to say this looked alot simpler than it actually is 😂, awesome video though bro!
I have the possibility to get 7 pockets for 150. All of them needs fixing in some way, and thinking about doing it and mod them all in some way, and try to make some money on them. What would be your choice when it comes to the pockets? Mostly screen problems.
@@JakeSimmons: And it ate batteries like crazy. Plus a year back then for LCDs was like a year in late 90s for PC parts - tech was evolving crazy fast.
I slacked on a gba LED screen when it was like 35 bucks.. I finally got it done when it reached 55 bucks for the screen. Also put a Ben Ven LED Lynx screen in my gen2 Lynx before he changed to lots sales woot.
Hey! Excellent video! I followed all of the steps, but when I rotated the polarized film 90 degrees at the end to switch the colors back, I keep seeing the same inverted colors, but now darker. What could be wrong? Thanks!
Hey mate out of curiosity what is your favourite handheld of all time and game on said handheld? Cheers for making content featuring the brick, the brick rules!
I recommend buying a DS lite with a broken hinge or top screen and trying a macro mod. It’s only a few simple steps and really cheap if you break anything. Plus with the resistor being so small to solder on, if you can do that, you can do most basic mods
Which color did you go with for your bivert? and which color should I go with to maintain the original look and feel of the screen to go with my original shell/buttons? I just want to keep and all original "spirit" with this one.
Cool, what brand is your spudger? If it's not branded like iFixit, what keyword did you use to find it if it's ok to ask? I highly recommend: using rechargeable lithium AA 1.5v batteries if you don't want the look of the rechargeable lithium battery pack for the vertical form factor Game Boys. By the way could you use 99.99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the gunk after removing the reflector? God bless us modders/
Playing contra on my bed without cables is the best or tv I have the original game boy fat one case but I don’t know how to mod it to play game boy colors or game boy advance is there anyway
That is a LOT of work… but the result looks awesome - more close to how it suppose to be. I wolder how this go with Pocket. Anyways, great video as always 👍
Is this somehow doable for the original GBA as well? Or is it a different type of screen and it's impossible? Because most of videos are about replacing the whole screen with some IPS or TFT and just a handful about adding some front light
@@ItsDoms Thx, I put in an 100 ohm resistor last week from another backlight set i had laying around. The gameboy wouldn't boot my flashcart because of the power consumption of the led-panel so I tryed soldering in the resitor and it worked.
@@JakeSimmons thank you real quick I'm waiting on a soldering iron to get my house I took my Gameboy apart it's working except the sound I did hear go on for a bit tho should I get a speaker?
Would there ever be a mod kit without soldering for a gameboy pocket? Like bro, there should be a mod kit without soldering like the gbc one, this is kind of clickbaity tbh, not everyone has a solder and I'm pretty sure they are pretty expensive so not a good video so Thumbs down to the video.

4:18 I totally thought the excess ground wire was another red circle or the screws 😂

2:10 and you can see the difference between backlight simple and backlight plus bivert

Yeah this is wayyyy harder than the average IPS mod and the GBP version is even harder. I would definitely give an IPS mod a shot though!
I strongly suggest you keep that ground wire as short as possible.
I just hooked my backlight up to a 6ft USB cable from Temu. Works great. No more light flicker.
whats the voltage on the usb cable :)
For me the hardest part while doing it myself was the polarizer with a sticky side hahaha (update: bivert mod and backlight are successful!).
What is the purpose of that rubber strip that you removed? Is it needed? How do you glue it back on? Thin strip of Elmer’s glue?
I don’t think it’s necessary. But if you want to put it back, idk use double sided tape. That’s how it was originally put on there

Hey Jake where can I ship you a gameboy game that was made in 2022?
My PO Box is in the description!
"What Nintendo should have done from the start in 1989." They should have released the Game Boy with technology that didn't exist yet?
Sega released the Game Gear a year later with a backlit display

It’s hard to choose any definitive answer but Pokemon Diamond on the DS Lite will always have a special place in my heart
How would you recommend gaining some beginner experience with soldering for someone who’s trying to get into retro game mods?
I recommend buying a DS lite with a broken hinge or top screen and trying a macro mod. It’s only a few simple steps and really cheap if you break anything. Plus with the resistor being so small to solder on, if you can do that, you can do most basic mods
My gameboy also has philips screws, from what I hear, that's a rarity.
some of the very early production of the dmg01 had nothing but Phillips.
I'm new to modding and soldering. What kind of resistor is that? Does it matter?
Which color did you go with for your bivert? and which color should I go with to maintain the original look and feel of the screen to go with my original shell/buttons?
I just want to keep and all original "spirit" with this one.
I just did white but yellow or green would probably be closer to the original
soooo question does the bivert mod work without the Back light ? 0.o ??
What do i do if i dont have kapton tape or heat shrink for the resistor?

My game boy isn’t turning on anymore, I don’t know where I failed.
Clean switch

The pocket version will come out soon ish!

You can add a front light but nothing like this
@@JakeSimmons I see. Thank you for clarifying!
08:03 how many ohms is the resistor value for this backlight kit?
The color stripes are value codes, looks to be a 100ohm resistor.
why does your gameboy can handel 4 batteries hacker
My kit doesn't have the resistor. What happens without it?

Buddy you’re a bad influence. My backlight and bivert kit gets here on the 25th lol
Muahahaha
Dose it work for GBC
No
Ok thanks
I love the shirt
