I love how every one of these GBC mod videos I watch showcases Pokemon Crystal, which is actually the reason I'm modding my old grape GBC. Successfully replaced my speaker and a dozen cart batteries without killing anything, so I figured I'd treat myself to my first major project build (most of the parts should hopefully be in by Saturday). IPS kit + case, some clear buttons/membranes, LED flex board, LiPo battery kit, amp board, and some replacement caps because supposedly those are good to change out. Going to be super tricked out by the time I'm done. Yours is the only tutorial I've seen that talked about the possibilities of shorts, so with all the stuff I'm throwing in I guess I'd better be extra cautious about that. Retro Game Repair shop has an amazing selection of stuff, but I also wanted to shout out Handheld Legend for having a lot of product overlap, but also having a lot of smaller mods and accessories that RGR doesn't. Between the two, as far as I can tell you can get a pretty complete catalog of hardware mods, stickers, shells etc. To anyone on the fence about trying stuff like this; get a cheap soldering kit online and practice with some Gameboy batteries or a cheap soldering project. It's really not as difficult as it seems once you've gotten some practice, and being able to mod/repair your old stuff is a really satisfying skill to have.
The quickest, cheapest and easiest way to learn soldering is to solder a cube out of wires of different thickness. You can even use paper-clips for that, mix them up with different sizes of wire, use spare metal parts, what ever you have lying around.
I mean the basic gameboy color is an spectacular quality system with lots of amazing games, but a good quality backlight lcd makes an already amazing system better
I had a gameboy color when I was in my 20s. My friends and I used it throughout college. We had a link cable to connect 4 players. People would watch us play it at lunch.
Man, the best tutorial! Thank you so much, first ever modding project of mine turned out great thanks to your guidence! Thank you for sharing your experience too with the tips and everything! Greetings from Hungary
I accidentally bought an extremerate shell, but just bought a funnyplaying screen with your code. Gonna have to cut the shell so we’ll see how it goes lol
@@JakeSimmons the shell is “IPS ready,” but it only fits a V1 screen and my OEM screen. V2 is not compatible, hence the cutting I’ll have to do haha. I bought on Amazon. I’ve seen a couple cutting vids on UA-cam so thats probably what I’ll reference.
Update: I took a couple knicks out of the corners of the plastic that I was able to at least color in with black sharpie. But they’re Super tiny. I was actually able to do it. It works. It’s an awesome feeling. 🤯🤯
Hey jake, is there a chance in the future you will make another all-white GBA again? Identical to the one that you have as a thumbnail you have on your website. I would definitely buy one.
DAMN, all the kits I find are smaller or for custom shells/not just drop in. Man I gotta learn basic electronics skills and soldering 😅 I want to tinker with some of my other stuff and my guitars…
Hey Jake, your videos inspired me to get in into modding, just got my materials, and ordered my LED v2 GBC screen. I was wondering, how to you figure pricing when you sell your modded GB's?
I mostly base it around the cost of goods. I make about the same amount of profit on every sale. The price differences really come down to the different models and if it’s a shell with a design on it. And then I add the value of my work to it
It’s not a full soldering 101 video but I feel like it will really help! Also catching streams live helps so I can answer any questions you may have while I’m soldering! ua-cam.com/video/xGgT8MM51AI/v-deo.html
I have quite a few GBA tutorials! My in depth tutorial for the GBA wasn’t as good as the rest because it was the first one I did. The most recent GBA tutorial I did is the kit I recommend now but I encourage you to watch them all and decide for yourself! Also the VODS channel has uncut streams of me doing several GBA mods if you need more help!
Hey question I bought the kit and installed the 2.0 version, ribbon said 2.7 version so it pops up a display when I hold start and select. But I can't seem to change the different color options for each word just the whole thing to a different color? Any ideas on the new version? Ty
You can’t make each word different colors, they’ll all be one color. When it highlights “game” and “boy,” hitting start or select will change the centering of the display. When color is highlighted, you can cycle through all of the colors with start and select. Then holding down both buttons on the color you want will set the color for the whole logo. I’m a little confused by your comment so I hope that helps. Otherwise I’d need a visual to help
@@JakeSimmons that answers it perfectly 👌 I think it just confused me because my version actually brings up a menu to change everything 🙃 but thanks again you are the man and your discount on items is appreciated
Hey! I have a question!? It looks like something poked through my ribbon cable where the little connector plugs into the back of the screen. The screen still works but looks like images get burnt and the images all start over lapping. Do you think I just need to replace my cable or is the screen garbage too
Hehe I have 100% ipa. No… I really do have it, and it melts through gunk like no tomorrow but mine smells like it has some methanol not water so it’s gonna smell awful. P.S. It’ll only smell like that tho for about a day then it will smell like almost nothing.
@@JakeSimmons really excited to start fixing gameboy consoles. i have a green Gameboy color i can start with. i just need to buy the ifixit kit and solder kit aswell. im glad i found your channel.
The sensor should be built into the ribbon cable if you’re using the same kit as me. It’s the black square next to the part that goes into the game boy motherboard. The yellow touch pad is there just in case the built in one is defective. You should also be able to solder the other touch pad down without the need for the wire and still have it touch the top of the shell
I’ve been doing it for a very long time because the first time I ever did this mod, those pins were shorting on the ribbon cable for this kit. I’ve been doing so long that I was curious if it was still necessary or if it was just a coincidence that I had that issues on my first attempt. I still covered everything in kapton tape and those pins poked right through it and it was shorting again. Tried it twice with 2 different boards, same thing. Some people don’t do it and I don’t know how they do it but from my experience, I recommend just taking the extra 2 minutes to do it so you don’t have to open it up again once you’re done. Also, make sure all of the pin clippings are off the board. Those little leftovers can also cause shorts!
I don't know man maybe I'm the odd one out but I feel like it's blasphemy to replace the screen. I know technically it's superior in every way but I feel like it's putting a brand new Corvette motor in a classic Chevy. It's cool to most people but to purists they kind of cringe.
How did you get my mom's toothbrush...?

those childhood memories were accurate, to the parents yelling at us 🤣
God dang that's clean! I do wish I had this as a kid.
I ordered this kit for one of my gameboy colors. I got a nice pikachu shell to go with it too.
The actual AD sponsor word was clean!
Just finished, thanks so much! I was nervous for the soldering but it turned out great! Thanks so much for the tutorial it really helped.

I just uses a reading light, but I do want to get a separate GBC to mod at some point.
😂 the street ligjt one hit hard af 😂😂
The game boy color and light.
just followed this video step by step and modded my first Gameboy Color!! Awesome video dude :^)
Ps you should know that UA-cam inserted ads right after your line "here's a word from our sponsors." Apparently you are sponsored by McDonalds now.
I put the ad there on purpose haha I just don’t get to choose what ad plays
The two peels part!!
😆
Intro was spot on 😂
i used to have a little light that plugged into the transfer port, also had a logitech light magnifer too.
i remember having a clip on torch powered by the headphone socket on mine.
This is a legit clean build 🔥🔥🔥
Gameboy Color be looking amazing 🤩
I used to have a worm light for my Gameboy color
I called the gameboy a few years back and it actually still was in service ,I’m not sure if it is anymore though
Nice I have the same one only instead of a white screen I have a black one.
The only problem I have is the only Gameboy Color I have is a near mint Pokémon Yellow Special Edition.
Dont do ettttt

Nice build Jake, what's a good site to buy japanese consoles?
I buy in bulk from eBay. If you’re looking for single game boys, I’ve heard sendico is good
I second sendico
Also Zenmarket/Buyee, both support the Yahoo auctions where you can bulk purchase used japanese gameboys with appropriate pricing.

With these mods do they play any regular games
Do you ever worry about crossing wires since you use all the same color? I tend to use several colors and label them in a notebook.
When it’s only 3-4 wires it’s not too bad but if I’m not given any wires, I’ll do mine with several colors

Can you add the buttons down here as well

You don't use flux, so from my opinion your soldering is crap.
If the shell screw holes are too skinny, how do you widen them?
I’m not sure what you mean
The screw holes don't come threaded. So just use a little bit of force and go slow when screwing them in for the first time.
