I've been a "beginner" guitar player for 20 years, playing open chords and easy songs from the internet. Since we're all isolated I decided to start learning the theory of the guitar neck. I wanted to be able to finger pick and travel up and down the fret board, something I've never been able to learn all these years. My awakening started a few months ago when I rented a keyboard and started learning the key positions on that. That helped me a lot when I started learning the guitar neck layout as well. I've watched a hundred guitar tutorials over the last week and this is BY FAR the most concise/succinct explanation I've seen yet. Now back to trying to master CAGED and memorizing the Penatonic scales etc. Sorry to ramble on, I type really fast. :)
You've mirrored a Lot of Guys and Gals out there that are in the same 'Guitar Camp' as you are! Thanks for Sharing! My Goal? Learn all the Scales, the entire Fretboard, then Sing the Notes with my 'Fingers' up and down the Neck!
i have been playing guitar for two years now and was never able to understand any of these guitar note explanation videos but this guy dumbed it down so much it just opened a whole nother world of learning thanks man
When I took my first guitar lesson I told the teacher when you tell me something say it like you’re teaching a ten year old because I’m stupid and I can’t grasp anything. It worked great. Now I can jam the shit out of Mary’s little lamb.

Yes 🤔 This sort of theory never changes so people keep watching. I did a newer version of this video, (ua-cam.com/video/w89mP1yRfdA/v-deo.html) but people still find the old one, I guess that's just the way UA-cam works . . 😊
I'm getting an acoustic guitar for Christmas. Im already trying to teach myself some stuff without it. I didn't know how it would be learning at 22 without lessons, so hopefully you keep coming back to reply!

As a piano player the guitar always looked so complicated and hard to understand but after watching this video it really helped. I never knew the note concept was so alike.
I just bought a guitar and today I watched half a dozen videos claiming I could memorize the fretboard in 10 minutes but you are the only one that actually explained what is going on with those crazy dots on my fretboard so I'm gonna hang out with you for a while:))
I watched a number of other tutorials trying to learn this with no luck. While watching this video I drew out six strings on a sheet of lined paper pretending the lines were frets. As I watched the video I labeled my 'fretboard'; then immediately after I picked up my guitar and played the notes while saying them aloud one by one. Done. Fretboard memorized in like 10 minutes or so. Thanks guys!!!!!! Now I plan to use a metronome playing the whole notes up and down the neck while saying them out loud until I get to 120bpm without tension in my hands or arms. After that I plan to practice the CAGED method to become fluent with using the whole neck, while learning as much as I can about music theory. Along the way I plan to take lessons in person about once every two weeks while playing Rocksmith 2014 an hour a day, and practicing technique drills for another hour. The ultimate desired goal is to get closer toward playing in the style of music of a Nick Johnston, Joe Satriani, or Yngwe Malmsteen. +GCH Guitar Academy does that sound like a reasonable path considering I travel for work a lot and have limited availability for in person lessons?
Is that Rocksmith game any good? I saw a 2nd hand copy the other day but it didn't come with any of the wires. I didn't want to waste money buying everything if the game wasn't very good.
Yes I agree, - I've watched loads of the vlogs on how to learn the fret board note. The picture caught my eye. I looked for reference, - so glad I did. Many Thanks.👍😀

As a beginner I was daunted by the charts of notes in seemingly random spots but you have explained it in such a simple form I feel confident to move forward - thank you so much 💕 I will check out your other videos as well 😀
I had to hop on the comments and say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! I am a woodwind, piano, and percussion musician and know how to read music on the page, know the pattern progression of notes, octaves....all of that. I have always wanted to learn guitar and I picked one up finally. My biggest roadblock is that I want to start learning just scales so I can know the notes on the fret as I play, then incorporate scales and go from there. My hurdle was understanding what notes were played when pressing each fret. It starts with finally memorizing open fret, as you mentioned in the video. Then, when you started showing the notes on the low E string and how to know that chromatically, the B/C and E/F are always together with no half step in between...it clicked. A fret is a half step! I was able to relate it to piano keys and how that is set up and now, I'm off and rolling. It took your video for me to get that click to happen so now, I know the notes on the fretboard. Thanks again! If I could thumbs up this a million times, I will. I'll definitely subscribe to your channel and see what other words of wisdom you have. You've saved me from frustration!
Thank you very much for your feedback on the lesson and your experience. It's really encouraging when you find out the videos are helping people out . . . thank again 😊😃
Finally a visual aid that really helps. When you wrote the notes out A BC D EF G A, (with the gaps in between) it finally clicked as to where the half steps are on the fretboard!! This is something I can close my eyes and see it and remember it! THANK YOU!

Holy shit! You made naming the notes on the fretboard so easy! No one i've watched explained it like that. It's so easy now, all you do is start at the string, for example Low E, and follow the pattern he showed earlier in the video and you've just named the frets. Wow Thank you man!!
Wow! Wow! I have listened to more than 6 different teachers thought i would never get it. You are simply the best teacher for a beginner. Thanks from Kenya

Just wanted to say a big thank you for this lesson. It was so clearly explained and I know I will be able to master this within a short time. Brilliant!
The day i master the guitar - i can always say ur sites help was the MAJOR REASON. Pls keep on.n can u also keep a vedio on what r the main mistakes beginners make ☺👍👍
I had my guitar for about a year and never really looked into the actual notes ever since the first video i found on it seemed wayy too confusing. Somehow you made everything very memorable and simple and I now Know all the notes on the guitar with only one watch through and some pauses 😎 THANK YOU!
There is a better way, especially if you plan on learning to read sheet music. The guitar is tuned in fourths except for the B string. The order of flats in the key signatures also proceed in fourths. The order of flats is B E A D G C F. For example if you have your finger on the 5th fret on the low E string, that is an A note, as you should already know. On the next string down (A string) at the same fret is the note D. To make this more clear, you know how to tune your guitar, right? It is tuned E A D G B E. The tuning of your guitar also follows the order of flats except for the B string as it is tuned a third up instead of a fourth. To make this crystal clear here is the order of flats and you will see the notes of how you tune your guitar between the added slash marks, B/EADG/CF. No matter where you are on the fretboard the note on the next string down follows this order, except on the B string which will be one fret forward. To prove to yourself that you already know this without realizing it, get your guitar and put your index finger on the E note on the A string at the 7th fret and bingo you know the name of the note on the next string below..... Just like tuning your guitar EADG.... Memorize the order of flats and you will have it. You already have four of the notes memorized you just need three more. To get a bead on this just think the word BEAD then GCF. BEADGCF And lastly this sequence of notes moves one fret forward at the B string and when the sequence ends on the F note it will begin again one fret forward. The only exception is going from the F note on the G string at the tenth fret to begin the sequence again on the B string at the 12th fret.
This was literally me first time watching your channel, and I am absolutely blown away by how easy to understand you're making it. The theory had been a bit difficult for me,but I could tell from the moment Eddie Ate Dynamite,Good Bye Eddie stuck in my head that this would be a great lesson, and it WAS. Thank you So much!
I have improved and even started Writting better because of your video on how to understand and use each letter on the chords of the string thanks for your help.
Thank you for your wonderful lesson this is so much useful to me you are unique brilliant teacher thank you from the bottom of my heart .God bless you. Raj From India.
40 years after giving up any chance of learning the fret board, you dumb it down enough for this block head to understand.............................tears of joy flowing all over my face !
Thank you so so so much!! You made it seem really easy and explained it in a way that even a begginer like me could understand everything You just motivated me to keep learning the guitar Thank you so much!!
I am an absolute beginner.. with no knowledge on guitar playing and the notes n felt tough to memorize strings or sounds.. the spacing really helped how to navigate across strings telling the logic between the sounds.. Best ever lesson.. thanks a lot.. am now able to know whereAll E can be played in a B string or whereAll A can be played in a G strong.. and many more.. and starting to practice this.. wow.... thanks so much Guru :)
If you remember the Beatles song “Let it be” You will now remember BE, as there are no notes between B to C and E to F. If you want to learn open strings 1 to 6 ( thin string to thick string ) try the following Eddie Bought Glitter Dynamite Amusing Eddie. No one ever gives the mnemonic for strings 1-6...but now you know. Very good video.
i have been trying to wrap my head around the fretboard and scales for a while. brilliantly done! thank you, so much! (and thanks pandemic lockdown, mysterious fucked up ways. =] )
I’ve played in band in H.S., marching, concert, jazz, and pit orchestra for our plays. Went to college on a music scholarship and played with professionals all thru college and after but I never picked up a guitar until 5 years ago. I already knew the scales to improv in jazz and was intimidated by try to learn to play the guitar. Now thanks to YOU and this video. I do think I’ve got it. Thanks so much for your help and I’ll come back and let you know how I do. You got a new sub. Thanks again.
That's amazing and that's what it's all about . . it sounds to me like you're serious about your music and it's a great complement you found my videos useful 😃
I've been playing on and off for years and never really progressed. This dude just dumbed it down to where I can finally learn more, move forward and not feel like a damn hack..
I tried to learn this theory and tried to asked my friends who are experts but they just send me the charts and its hard for me to understand and they are not willing to explained to me as they are not open minded and here i found your simple explanation and helped me understand understanding the theory better and it means a lot for me and i would surely suggest any self taught artist who are trying their best to learn and lastly thank you so much you will always have a place in my heart and because of this video as i almost give up but now i have the strength to move another steps thank you so much words can’t explain this feeling sir 😇😇
Thank you very much, it's really nice to know I can help . . I teach in the same way I need to learn. I didn't understand any of this for a long time. 😊😃
A really cool way of simplifying the notes on the guitar. You have taken all of the mystery out of the equation and broke it down for beginners to understand.
I've just posted the second part in this tutorial to take you one step further and understand sharps and flats

The day i master the guitar - i can always say ur sites help was the MAJOR REASON. Pls keep on.n can u also keep a vedio on what r the main mistakes beginners make ☺👍👍
Thanks, good suggestion . . will do! 😊
This is the first time I've ever seen note layout explained so clearly. Thank you!
Thank you :-)
I had my guitar for about a year and never really looked into the actual notes ever since the first video i found on it seemed wayy too confusing. Somehow you made everything very memorable and simple and I now Know all the notes on the guitar with only one watch through and some pauses 😎 THANK YOU!
That's great . . Thank you . . 🙂🙂
There is a better way, especially if you plan on learning to read sheet music. The guitar is tuned in fourths except for the B string. The order of flats in the key signatures also proceed in fourths. The order of flats is
B E A D G C F. To make this crystal clear here is the order of flats and you will see the notes of how you tune your guitar between the added slash marks,
B/EADG/CF.
BEADGCF
And lastly this sequence of notes moves one fret forward at the B string and when the sequence ends on the F note it will begin again one fret forward. The only exception is going from the F note on the G string at the tenth fret to begin the sequence again on the B string at the 12th fret.
Watching this lesson opened up so much of my guitar knowledge. THANK YOU!

Thanks so much for your help and I’ll come back and let you know how I do. You got a new sub. Thanks again.
