@@thereallittleson that’s the problem with most teachers, they deal with adults so they think everyone should just get it. Nah they need to explain it like we are a blank canvas with 0 idea on it
FYI, the stuff in UA-cam videos is just the tip of the iceberg. Steve's got a wide variety of in-depth guitar courses for guitarists of all skill levels. I was just saying that last night. I told my wife that I used to save up $4.00 to go buy sheet music, and now I can go online and play an actual song with the chords moving along, stop the video, see the chord more in detail, play with actual artists from UA-cam videos, all for free (or some variation of "free" - we pay for something somehow I guess). I've learned more from UA-cam tutorials than I could locally. No comparison. Just an incredible way to teach and to learn.
The art of teaching is to simplify a difficult concept. This guy has hit the nail on the head, he is a great teacher and that's why he's obviously such a good guitarist also. Its so simply put, well done Steve.
Thank you for this! Your explanation was so clear and simple. After my brother passed away last month, I developed a passion to start playing the guitar. He was amazing at playing, it was a natural gift for him. I know I have musical gifts too and maybe I can take on and continue the guitar gift that he had. I don’t have a guitar and can’t afford one, but last night when our church was empty I took the guitar and strummed however I could. I can’t explain the feeling of joy that filled my heart. It felt natural, like the guitar just belonged on my lap! The sound was so beautiful I fell in love! Ah, maybe some day I will be able to have a guitar but right now I am preparing myself and learning so I am a little more ready. Again, thank you! Truly amazing video and first one that opened my mind to understand what’s going on with the frets and notes.
I played guitar for years as a child got frustrated quit till I was in my late 30 got frustrated again now in my 50s have learned more from you since I subscribed a week ago than I ever learned from my other teachers,, you have broken things down in a way I can understand them!!!a lot of things I didn’t understand before now make sense!!! Thank you soo much for your help !!! I really appreciate you!!! From southeast Missouri,,,,
I also played guitar for years as a child and I also quit because I got frustrated. Now I'm 24 and I started again. So many people on the internet can explain it so much better than any of my teachers. And now if I don't feel like playing for a week I can just not do it and I don't get that look of disappointment because I didn't practice. The internet is such a wonderful thing. Though, I wish there was some kind of platform where we could easily find all of these good videos in a structured way. I accidentally came across this video, and I'm sure there are videos which I should see but I don't know about them yet.
Yeah mate spot on me too, I Played for years, had lessons practised heaps. Slowly slowly I made progress but stop for 20 years because of frustration and timing issues. Picked up the Guitar about 4 months ago turned on the "internet" and wow guys like this have helped me progress 100 times faster. Also I have been learning full songs, chord progression etc then finding the BPM with drums only and my timing is the best its ever been. I just turned 50 wish we had the internet back in the day. Never to late I suppose. Cheers from an Aussie living in Turkey. Happy playing people :)
What a lesson ... somebody who can actually explain music too a total beginner who new absolutely nothing about music at 68 years old... THANK YOU STEVE
hello steve i m 30 years old working guy from north east india. i want to say thank you as i have almost spent 2 years asking my teacher to suggest me a easy way to remember fret board but your 10 min video made me more clear then ever. thank you brother edit:sorry for my bad english
My first introduction to guitar came from a man who broke into my house and fell asleep on my couch, drunk and lost on his way home. I found him one morning in too embarrassing a position to do anything about it, and I'm glad I did, because his way of apologizing came in the form of teaching me some guitar lessons when he saw I had one. Bless his heart, but it didn't quite get into this. He went over "Do re mi fa so... etc.," and where that is on the frets, which turns out to correspond with the above video without even knowing the exact notes, but along with chords and some right-hand techniques I never understood WHY the sounds worked where they were until watching this. The simple, easy to understand explanation of the rules here just put into perspective for me so many years of blind, if still very joyful, noodling around without much direction or comprehension. I feel like I've just had everything click and am fully on a new page with my playing quite literally in a matter of minutes. THANK YOU!!!
A way I remember that B and E have no sharps is this little saying someone in my guitar class at my highschool came up with. “There BE no sharp” Read it as if you were a pirate.
took me 5 seconds, but since i did some b&e as a wayward youth, it just sank in. didn't steal anything, just looked around for playboys and quarters. you'd be surprised how many quarters you can find in someone elses house.
I've seen a lot of different methods for learning this, the biggest thing in my opinion is to just make sure to think about it every day. Just visualize your fretboard when you're bored at work/school, when you're in bed at night, etc. Don't wait until you have your guitar in your hand every time to practice this.
when i was younger i used to be a hater (hope u read this steve, much love) i used to think all you were saying was nonsense and rambling about all these complicated things u didnt need ( i was young and dumb and not ready to learn) but now at 21 years of age i find you the most insightful teacher on youtube. you describe everything so perfectly that i just understand it ive learned pentatonic all thanks to you. i never understood or saw the value of them until i saw your video, you were the literal gateway into learning guitar for me. you said all the right things to just make it make sense to me. thank you and keep doing what your doing. you really are helping people out there and im living proof. keep rocking!

I learned more in 10 minutes learning the notes just one string at a time and applying that formula than I have in 25 years of playing guitar. For the last few days I have been searching around and people are trying their own way to explain it and it just never clicks with me so thank you.
I paid for a course on memorizing the fretboard and worked on it for months. You just explained it better in this video than that entire course ever did . Light bulb moment. Thanks much
you can tell this guy is a good teacher because of the way you can see him thinking about how to communicate this stuff clearly and memorably, all of which is complex stuff for music theory newbies. instantly subscribed! :)
Steve your the best guitar beginner tutor there is on youtube today today without those fake tutors that keep asking you to click on this link and start spamming your email !.........easy and to the point. Keep it up good man!
You didn't even say the words "circle of fifths", but within the first 5 minutes you made me understand what countless others made impossible to learn. Thank you!
I tried a few different Methods and then came across THIS Method of Steve's. Hands Down, this is the BEST way to learn the Fretboard. It works! After using it for awhile, all of the Accidental Notes simply filled themselves in and I learned them without even trying.
Steve Stine is simply one of the very best guitar teacher in the world. As a student I spent hours learning from his videos, and now that I'm lucky enough to give private lessons, it's always refreshing to come back listening to the master and get a clear picture of things again. Infinite gratitude. ♾🤟🎸❤

Very good. I'm 70+ and have played for myself most of my life. I enjoy singing and it was a vehicle. I had always assumed it was too complicated to learn. Since retirement, I've played more than ever. That and choir membership have given me general musical knowledge. Your style is so informative, if I had seen it sooner, it would have made the guitar more approachable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
At the age of 60, I’ve just started to learn the guitar. This video explains a lot and clears up some of the mysteries for me. I’ve played the piano and keyboard at different stages, so have an understanding of the notes and octaves etc. When thinking of individual notes I always have a picture of a keyboard in my head which helps me. Thank you for the tips you’ve given. Great video 👍
Thank you for the lessons!! I am a 65 year old drummer that has always wanted to learn basic guitar and you explain things that my thick head understands it!!! Thank You!!!! Mike Ploetner
My apologies for commenting again. This is just mind blowing for me. I’ve always enjoyed playing according to what sounded correct, but I had major issues with learning theories because I can only learn with “photographic” memory. If I read a theory on a book, I cannot understand it - my brain doesn’t register it. It’s very frustrating and it probably doesn’t make any sense, but what you just showed made sense for the very first time in so many years. I just wanted to thank you again for giving me hope and making me pick up my guitar again. Thank you! You’re by far the best guitar teacher on here, as well as the most genuine person. 🤘
I just took a whole course with the worst theory teacher EVER. I learned more from Steve in 10 minutes than in 6 weeks of lessons. What the hell! Some people are great teachers like Steve, and some are just good musicians who know nothing about actually helping people to learn and retain information.
He's a good communicator first and foremost. He could probably explain the quantum theory of light better than those useless profs if that was his field.
Well that's quite unfair. You spent 6 weeks learning, then came here and "learned" more. You probably already learned a lot and just with time came into the understanding phase

Wow this has blown my mind at its simplicity working out the notes, its Saturday and im looking forward to jamming later, thanks mate ur a legend Steve
Just watched it 10 times today. Keep doing what you're doing. It's working! Also, i wanted to comment on the pace. Some video's go so fast assuming the audience will just pause and play (and repeat) .. I love the pace of your video. There are very few times where I had to pause. I understand the notes now, thanks.
After struggling to self teach for a few years now, I’ve finally committed to get serious and really learn. I’ve watched a few of your videos now and relate so well with your teaching style. Had to subscribe and will be watching all of them eventually. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
wow. amazing! i picked up a guitar on monday this week, got put in quarantene tuesday night and have spent countless hours practicing. when i was younger i never understood. today my daughter of 10 years told me i should learn the notes, tomorrow i'll be able to show her what i learned. i would have never dreamed i could learn the guitar. now i m learning dust in the wind, chords and notes amazing work thank you Steve, and team i guess
I was just watching Rick Beato's video on how to learn the fretboard. Now, I love Rick's videos, but I was lost and got nothing after watching his video for five minutes. This video came up in the sidebar so I clicked on it. After 5 minutes of watching, I'm following along without any problem and am already learning valuable, clear, easily understandable stuff. Thank you!

I've been trying to learn to play guitar by myself for about a year now, today it occurred to me to check "how does the fretboard work" and my mind has been completely blown, now i feel like i can make it.
Trying to learn and finally a video that does not focus on the person in front of the camera and his/her skill but actually on the viewer trying to understand how to read the guitar - this was so helpful! Thanks
Totally love this guy, 64 years old and I'm sick of playing crap on and off (mainly off) since the age of 10 ; needed someone to truely explain things without showing off or patronising. If you're in your teens or close either way, think yourself really lucky you've never seen Bert Weedons' "Play in a Day" and have this at your fingertips!
I have found these lessons incredibly helpful, and his level of experience as a teacher is incredibly apparent in how few edits there are in this video.
Finally an instruction on the most basic item in music. I am just starting out and this made sense...it helped also that I played piano as a kid. Thanks Steve!

This is, quite frankly, one of the best guide videos I've ever seen. I can't put into words how great you are at explaining things (kind of ironic, huh? lol) and how many doors it feels like you opened for me. I clicked this expecting another complicated mess of nonsense and you broke it down so well. If I had you as a teacher back when I first picked up a guitar, I'd probably be somewhere by now hahaha Subscribing and gonna be watching a lot more of your content. I wish you all the best!
The young lady in the picture is my Foster Daughter. I'm 68 years old. I have learned to play individual songs. I know about 30 or so but everything I play is through memory by ear. I wish I had known about you and your methods of teaching a few years back. You, Mr Stine are what I would consider to be a great communicator. It seems like without you even trying you capture and hold my attention with an eagerness to hear and learn more than I ever expected I would at my age and it's fun! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!. I'm going to see how I do with my memorization of the notes and if goes as well as I feel it will, I will become a patron. Again. Thank you...L

I just told my wife I’ve never had someone explain music notes to me this well, within the first few minutes I started to understand my guitar. Thank you
I took up guitar a year ago, "instructed" by I/N videos and printed media. This video was a true "Eureka!" instant. At my stage of struggling with learning all the fretboard notes, I realized that the next stage of my learning must be: Before learning the note you're playing, learn the note's OCTAVE PROGRESSION up and down, across and back the fretboard. Since I started a year ago, I recall reading and seeing videos that stressed that intervals are as important as notes. It just started to make a lot more sense. Thank you Steve.

Man I've been looking up videos about learning notes on the fretboard. .and my god this video was just what I needed..the most easy and simple way to learn.thank you so much for this video 😎🎸✌
You, sir, are an excellent teacher! I was putting together some notes to get a friend of mine started on guitar. I came up with the same system you showed here! I'm not an accomplished guitar player by any means, but I do have a way of seeing things and can usually convey my ideas or Knowledge (or hair-brained schemes) to others. Glad to know I'm steering him in the right direction! Thanks so much for sharing - sub'd!
Hi Steve. I’m a beginner and watched many videos on this subject. Your explanation on this is by far the easiest to understand. Your explanation in regard to the piano layout made the ‘penny drop’ and became so much easier to understand. Thank you very much indeed for highly informative lesson.
Steve it brings back memories for me. My dad rest in piece was an excellent guitar player. He tried to teach me this same thing your teaching. I wish I would have paid more attention to him. Thank you for teaching the same techniques my father did.

You deserve more recognition than you have right now. I can say im a mediocre for years and now this is a breakthrough. Im definitely sharing this and will watch all your videos. Thank you so much!
This was darn helpfull! I was always a bit intimidated by trying to mesmerize the notes, but with this I got a new perspective and it kinda clicked for me. Thanks very much! :) \m/
You made my day... my whole life... I still own my first guitar, it has been almost 40 years and today I finally know how to figure out the notes on the fretboard.
Wow, Thank you Steve! I am a beginner and your lessons are absolutely amazing. Your teaching style is very easy to understand and apply. I am so grateful for you sharing your time and talents.
Looks like a gnarly outlaw but talks like the nicest 1st grade teacher you ever met... love it! .. seriously tho, you make the fretboard simple and understandable. I'm a terrible teacher & will recommend your videos to anyone asking me to teach them. I was taught piano as a young child, so theory just makes sense to me, but explaining it so it makes sense to others is definitely a gift you have. Thanks for the lessons , will definitely share😎

I signed my kids up for piano lessons because all of these relationships are so much easier to visualize on the keyboard (which I don't play). Now they're way better musicians than I'll ever be. Thanks for sharing these great tips.
This should be the first lesson on a guitar. funning thing is i have been doing this exactly... not as easy as is sounds, been working up and down every string, forward and back, than try doing it with your eyes closed... and then skipping around strings. than try to hear each note on each string... do it one hour every day. I think this is the most important thing you can learn if your a beginner.. than write it out on musical notation all mixed up, and play it,,,, if you can get to the point you can do it all easy,, your one hundred times ahead of everyone else that's learning. it's not easy,, still working on it.... Oh yeah one more thing, on a 24 fret guitar C can be played in twelve positions.. on a piano with 88 keys that is 4 different C locations. Middle C on a Piano can be played in 5 positions on a guitar. See this image of guitar in musical notation... visualguitar.com/ I had to come back and add this because it can be very confusing.. a 24 fret guitar in can be played in 4 different octave ranges. Meaning the vibrations/sound waves of each individual note can be four different wavelengths. However just because there are 4 different octaves does not mean they sound the same, they are just vibrating the same. For instance C at the 5-3-5 position and 6-8-6 position are the same octave, but do not sound the same on a real instrument.. But on MIDI they do sound the same, which is why tabs in the same octave sound so bad on a computer but completely different on a real guitar.

This isn’t just “tips.” This made me look at the fretboard in a whole new way. Thank you so much!!!
I've learned more about guitar in 2 videos than picking all my life!
I agree. Thanks so much Steve, really enjoy your vids.
He keeps it so simple its seems easy, thats what teachers should do. Explain to everybody like u are explaining to a child..
FgaBC andD
@@thereallittleson that’s the problem with most teachers, they deal with adults so they think everyone should just get it. Nah they need to explain it like we are a blank canvas with 0 idea on it

lol right, we should be the ones saying sorry for taking up steves time lolol
Seriously this could have been 2 hours and I would still be engaged
He can take all the time he wants with me! 😜
I know. He must know how restless some of us get and yet want to learn to play music

Amen oh yeah
I was just saying that last night. I told my wife that I used to save up $4.00 to go buy sheet music, and now I can go online and play an actual song with the chords moving along, stop the video, see the chord more in detail, play with actual artists from UA-cam videos, all for free (or some variation of "free" - we pay for something somehow I guess). I've learned more from UA-cam tutorials than I could locally. No comparison. Just an incredible way to teach and to learn.
Okay I confess I wasn't going to watch it whole (22mins), but couldn't stop once I started.
Literally happened to me and by the end of the video I couldn’t stop smiling on how easy it was to learn and absorb the information. 🎸 🧠
the same for me. This man rock!
Right??

The art of teaching is to simplify a difficult concept. This guy has hit the nail on the head, he is a great teacher and that's why he's obviously such a good guitarist also. Its so simply put, well done Steve.
Watching your guitar lessons is up there with watching Bob Ross paint. Relaxing and encouraging.

From southeast Missouri,,,,
Same here
Yep, it's like a light came on. Such clarity of explanation. Thank you for sharing Steve! Most appreciated!
Keep Practicing man
He’s a fantastic teacher. He breaks it down and simplifies things better than anyone else I’ve seen so far on UA-cam.
For C and D on the 6th fret I like to think of a CD because it has a hole in the middle, like a circle which represents the dot that they surround
its the silly stuff like this that really helps with learning that many people neglect in their lessons. Thanks for the tip
Wooaaww, that's better than the bunny ears example. Thanks buddy🙌🏾

What a lesson ... somebody who can actually explain music too a total beginner who new absolutely nothing about music at 68 years old... THANK YOU STEVE
I think every single person starting to learn guitar should start with THIS lesson. Thank you
hello steve i m 30 years old working guy from north east india. i want to say thank you as i have almost spent 2 years asking my teacher to suggest me a easy way to remember fret board but your 10 min video made me more clear then ever.
thank you brother
edit:sorry for my bad english
There was a B&E (breaking & entering) and somebody stole the sharps and flats. That's how i learned it
Good one thanks
That's good! Lol.
took me 5 seconds, but since i did some b&e as a wayward youth, it just sank in. didn't steal anything, just looked around for playboys and quarters. you'd be surprised how many quarters you can find in someone elses house.
Fels Naptha this is so silly to me
@@FelsNaptha I use to steal all the quarters out of my dad's change bin and go to the arcade or get a hotdog. Use to drive him nuts.
I've seen a lot of different methods for learning this, the biggest thing in my opinion is to just make sure to think about it every day. Just visualize your fretboard when you're bored at work/school, when you're in bed at night, etc. Don't wait until you have your guitar in your hand every time to practice this.
Bro, it feels like this video is opening up my third eye with all this easy to understand guitar knowledge.
when i was younger i used to be a hater (hope u read this steve, much love) i used to think all you were saying was nonsense and rambling about all these complicated things u didnt need ( i was young and dumb and not ready to learn) but now at 21 years of age i find you the most insightful teacher on youtube. you describe everything so perfectly that i just understand it ive learned pentatonic all thanks to you. i never understood or saw the value of them until i saw your video, you were the literal gateway into learning guitar for me. you said all the right things to just make it make sense to me. thank you and keep doing what your doing. you really are helping people out there and im living proof. keep rocking!

Yeah, if only you could stop or rewind the video, haha😉 He does a great job. Hes just trying to manage his time. He packs a ton of info in his videos.
Holy shit, that video was 22 minutes long? Not once did I want that to end, felt like I learnt more from the video than all my time practicing
Thank you for turning on the light switch!
Steve Stine is simply one of the very best guitar teacher in the world.
You need to be a school teacher. You have a gift to relate ideas to other people.
I just took a whole course with the worst theory teacher EVER. I learned more from Steve in 10 minutes than in 6 weeks of lessons. What the hell! Some people are great teachers like Steve, and some are just good musicians who know nothing about actually helping people to learn and retain information.
I do agree with you!...
He's a good communicator first and foremost. He could probably explain the quantum theory of light better than those useless profs if that was his field.
Well that's quite unfair. You spent 6 weeks learning, then came here and "learned" more. You probably already learned a lot and just with time came into the understanding phase
Holy crap...now I get it... I can pick out simple songs in 1st position but finally now understand this crucial piece of 411. THANK YOU!
I’ve used fender play for the past few months and didn’t really understand what I was doing til I found this channel. God bless, what a goldmine.

Just watched it 10 times today. Keep doing what you're doing. It's working! Also, i wanted to comment on the pace. Wow, I never got it until now. Thank you sir. Love the way you simplified all of it.
This is, quite frankly, one of the best guide videos I've ever seen. I can't put into words how great you are at explaining things (kind of ironic, huh? lol) and how many doors it feels like you opened for me. I just told my wife I’ve never had someone explain music notes to me this well, within the first few minutes I started to understand my guitar. Thank you
I took up guitar a year ago, "instructed" by I/N videos and printed media. This video was a true "Eureka!" instant. At my stage of struggling with learning all the fretboard notes, I realized that the next stage of my learning must be:
Before learning the note you're playing, learn the note's OCTAVE PROGRESSION up and down, across and back the fretboard.
Since I started a year ago, I recall reading and seeing videos that stressed that intervals are as important as notes. It just started to make a lot more sense.
Thank you Steve.

I was taught piano as a young child, so theory just makes sense to me, but explaining it so it makes sense to others is definitely a gift you have. Thanks for the lessons , will definitely share😎
Uk subscriber here and I've been following you for years now Steve. I think you are one of the best teachers on UA-cam. You explain everything in a way that is easy to understand. Thanks for all your hard work and long may it continue. Best wishes from England.

Damn, after all these years I just now get it 😂😂
Bro it actually was BE sharps
Cause both B and E don't have sharps
Steve I like how you flex on us for a few seconds before getting to the goods
My Lord!!!! I'm only 5 minutes into this video and my mind is blown. Of all the videos I've watched, and I've watched quite a few, your technique of teaching the notes just automatically clicked. Now I need to buy another guitar! I gave mine away years ago because I just couldn't quite get into it because of a lack of understanding. This video has made all the difference. And I'm not even halfway through!!!!! God bless you!!! 😩🙌🙏❤🤗
Thanks for the kind words, Amaris! I'm glad Steve's video helped you better understand the notes on the fretboard.

@@stinemusiclessons Thank you so much!!!
Video 1: "Idk, im trash"
Video 30: "IT'S TIME TO ROCK"
Awesome!

11:04 "Sharts" on repeat at the moment, now all I cant hear is shart.
He didn’t even crack up! Now THAT’S a PRO! lol
My favorite note is now the A shart
What a great teacher. He simplifies and explains things so clearly
Thanks for the kind words, Mike! :-)
