Not finding any PDFs. Very interesting and I would love to pursue it and you more. But .......
Great lesson
I would like the free pdf. Then I will look into buying book.
Can't see any free PDF's. Did you remove them?
Can’t find the pdf
Maybe it's obvious to some but I was confused for a quick second. Rule 1 refers to the G and B STRINGS. Rule 2 refers to F and B NOTES.
Download the free PDF as that has the rules all written out
Thanks.

Yep
Makes sense, I think there is a lot of context missing here before we get into the detail. It feel a little like explaining how electrons spin without explaining what a molecule is. I'm still not sure of the HOW or the WHY after watching this. I was lost when the highlighter came out, as in, what's the significance of this. Maybe I need to watch more of this series?
I learned how to play as a kid, by ear. Then learned tabs later. Then started learning sheet music and such way later. My mother was a music teacher, and tried to teach me, but i just got confused. Something I've learned over the years now is, when you listen to great players like Eddie, Jimi, even SRV. The very seldom play a song the exact same way each time. I have several different recordings of Little Wing. Some by Jimi and some by SRV. They each played it differently from each other and differently in different recordings. The best advice i ever got from a guitar teacher, you can learn something someone else wrote and played. But, play it your own way as long as it sounds good. Make it your own. We all have different bodies. One may have longer fingers than another. One may be more flexible than another.
Omg, this has literally blown the fretboard wide open for me. Finally a lesson that makes something like this easy rather than "just learn the notes" thanks so much for this
I’ve watched your previous video on this and really found it useful. This one is better as it is short and to the point. I really had a light bulb moment with the perfect 4ths and major 3rd discussion and diagram.
Thanks for a great video.
Love your teaching style Ricky! ❤
i struggled watching a few fretboard videos but this one is starting to connect a few dots. thank you my friend
Brilliant. Thank you!
I keep my guitars by my bedside. So when I wake up, I can see the fretboard right away & I can grab them to practice. Soon as I wake up, I look at a guitar & read off the notes on the 6th & 5th strings, to make it second nature memory ~ To let it sink in. Then, I close my eyes & think in my head, A String: 3 is C, 5 is D, 7 is E, 9 is F# & so on. Then I think about the E string & I go, “3 is G, 5 is A, 7 is B, 9 is C# & so on. I learned it in a couple of weeks. I only got overwhelmed when I tried to learn all the strings at on e. Then, I came across a teacher who said learning the 6th & 5th strings are the most important, because those two are where most blues, rock & pop are played. That was very encouraging. I’m proud to have learned the E & A strings this year, 2023. It was an important New Year’s resolution. ❤️😁

Love this way of learning. I wish I could get a teacher like this when I was starting. Great content and pacing. Keep up the good work.
This is a brilliant way of teaching the fretboard. Thanks for sharing, it really resonated with me
Watching this helped me understand the idea behind the b bender mechanism. Great video and saved for future reference! 😎
This is great! Thanks for the lesson!! Much appreciated!!!!
This is terrific. I'm using this with my guitar students and I actually made an assignment out of it where they have to fill in the information on a blank guitar fretboard.
Fantastic to hear Brad! This is only part of the story. I have a follow up/expansion of this idea that makes playing guitar so much easier in my live stream tomorrow at 7pm UK time. Well worth a watch if you want your mind blown!
Thanks buddy awhile back I seen your video about grouping notes together to memorize the fretboard. It helped me out immensely 👍👋💯👊
I bought your book! It is wonderful! You are the best guitar teacher on UA-cam!
I learnt it a Charles Frederick years ago, to remember the # & b
nice job of applying it to the guitar neck as well as adding “bead”
👏👏👏👏
This is awesome man, thanks for pointing this out and explaining it really well!
That was a fantastic demonstration of the fretboard! Thank you!!!
Really helpful and simple video. I’ve been struggling with finding notes and I think getting this ingrained into my head is going to help me massively
Thank you for the lesson!
Finally a fantastic and relatively easy way to memorize the notes on the fretboard - I've been working on this for years - but with your little mnemonic device I've finally cracked the code - much appreciate !!! One of the most useful theory lessons I've ever watched on UA-cam!!! Cheers from Canada!!!
I wasn't actually into the previous videos about the fret board, but that's illuminating. Finally a mnemonic for guitar fret board!

This is very helpful. Thanks
Thank you Ricky.
I learned the pattern back in the early 90's without the pneumonic. I believe the Holy Spirit gave me the enlightenment/Wisdom of this pattern. Ironically in all my earlier instruction books on Guitar, this pattern was never shown, from what I can remember in them. It seems it has not been in regular circulation til the 2000's, which is a long time considering the popularity of guitar. YOU Ricky have the best Beginner lesson's on UA-cam by far. Wish I would have been able to have you book back in the early 70's.

I remember notes on fret randomly, mainly pattern of C, D, E and F, G A but your explanation connected it all together. Thanks for it
Very useful video Ricky. I’ve also noticed that the frets for both E-strings follow the chromatic scale up the neck so you can identify the first note at any fret! You can then use that beadgcf.
O.M.G. you fixed my brain. This is brilliant! Thank you!

Way too helpful thank you
I think I got it but will watch again and practice. Thank you so much
Very well done! I've played from tabs but never learrned the notes. Son is taking lessons and I've asked him how he finds notes because it makes ZERO sense. This finally helped - thank you!!! To those saying you went too fast, I only had to rewind it once, so it was well laid out. Appreciate it.
Learning about this for the first time on the day Charles got diagnosed with cancer is wild.
Great video. I enjoyed it and learned from it.
❤ Thank You
wow. I’ve been playing for over 20 years and this is still super helpful. I ended up memorizing the fretboard by using a tone row where open E was zero to 11th fret as 11, was finally able to see the patterns you’ve illustrated here much more useful with notes for key signatures. Great lesson!

Thank you for this. I've been trying to memorise the fretboard I've already meorized the E and A string cause of bar chords and wanted to memorise the whole fretboard cause I want to learn how to improvise. This made memorizing the fretboard so much easier. Thank you
Nice! Way to go, man!
Circle of fourths is magical !
I’ve been learning guitar for a year. Last week while i was doing an arpeggio exercise, I used BEADGCF to remember all the notes i need to hit first for each arpeggio cycling backwards through the circle of fifths. Kindve neat getting recommended this after figuring out that pattern.

Thanks Ricky ..
Ricky, Thankyou for this. I have been on a "Quest for Fire" for more years than I care to reveal and this is a gift of clarity and demystification I wish I had known or been told of many, many years ago. If people would spend 1/2 hour of effort to listen and understand this the reward is outstanding. I see people here expressing their self doubt about learning and comprehending what this all means to their playing. You're literally handing it out to everyone on a platter. I would hope that more players would put aside that doubt and realize that an hour or two with the guitar, your chart of the fretboard and some really fun exploration will enrich them with freedom on their instrument that will make them smile like they had won the lottery. This is really special, thankyou so much!!
Omg love you Rick for this. I am good with chords thats how i started learning guitar focusing on chords only as i try to sing with it. Then realised that knowing basics and leads will add that oomph to my songs. But i was so frustrated that i did not have patience to do exercises and was finding the way to learn the fret board. I was praying to the Universe please help me. Look what i found. Your video. You and Father Charles’ saved me. Thanks Rick. Gratitude🙏🏻🥰

for years people kept yammering at me about the circle of 5ths. I could see how it helped make sense of key signatures but just couldn't get it to make sense on the fretboard. Now I know why. My brain works in patterns and you are the only one who has ever explained the patterns in a way that makes sense.

EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT VIDEO!! GLAD I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL I SUBSCRIBED! Now I just have to learn how to play.... 😊

Thanks for putting this together Rick! You can't be a good guitar player if you don't know where the notes are.
😲 very helpful 😊
I could never understand why the "fb" pattern stopped working after the 10th fret. Thank you for explaining so that it makes sense to me.
❤️🔥❤️🔥thanks so much
For the first time I came to an understanding of how fretboard works??? this video is amazing. I’m surprised it’s free. I’m subscribing dude!!
Only that, this gave me the big idea of the fretboard, but putting it into practice is another thing. If there are exercises that I can do on the guitar to put this in my muscle memory, that’d be a great follow up video :)

Genius!! I get it!! Maybe because I have history of theory and understand the circle of 4ths & 5ths. It helped me a lot!!
This in depth video makes it all much clearer and significantly more important ua-cam.com/users/livema1AxeNGdV4
Knowing the Circle of Fifths, I was instantly able to apply this technique to the 7th & 2nd frets but not at all to any others. HOWEVER, knowing the intervals (full/half steps between notes of the major scale in addition to what you just taught me might help me figure out some more of this (e.g. a note on any of the top 2 strings will be the same note two strings & two frets higher). The compensation you mention has to then be added to use that on the next two strings (D&G). Maybe that will help other people who can't grasp your approach.
Best basic lesson I have ever seen since UA-cam began!

I like the story. Very us4ful.
awesomeness
See you Charles! That's proper!
You are the best... The most concise, genuine method with clear explanation I ever found to navigate the fretboard with confidence. It's amazing.
For those who are confused about his rules, it's a vertical navigation trick from top to bottom following his mnemonic one after another within a cycle:
R1) G to B = +1 refer to the 3rd to 2nd STRING move following the mnemonic
R2) F to B = +1 refer to his mnemonic cycle to start over again
R3) is the combination of R1 and R2
You are genius, I've learn something today.
Thank you very much, may God bless you bro.
Thank you Midevy! You need these 2 videos to expand this into something even more magnificent!

Thank you and please keep up your good work.
Thank you Ricky, gawdam.. I actually visualized the licks I'm practicing. They all make sense now. One question, so this also apply when you play at a # or b major/minor key, right?

@@rickysguitar yo, Thank You ❤️🕺🏻
One more thing to note is that once you have this pattern memorized you can use it from any note on the fretboard.
This will allow you to easily play in different keys.
You can use it from any NATURAL note on the fretboard.
Can you guys elaborate? I'm struggling to see the practical use beyond just memorizing the location of these notes
To elaborate, scales are pretty much the same in whichever key you are in. So just knowing the pattern(not the name of each note played) will keep you in key.
For example, if you play the pattern of the C major scale, but start on the D note, the pattern will take you through the notes D, E, F#, G, A, C#,D, even though you may not know those note names.
@@williambiggs3699 That would be playing in D Major using the notes you listed above. Besides the B.. You can also play the C major scale, but start on D and use the notes D E F G A B C D. That is how modes work and that would be D Dorian.
This in depth video makes it all much clearer and significantly more important ua-cam.com/users/livema1AxeNGdV4
This was a great device for finding notes. A couple of confusing things that might help. The opening segment talks about compass but then that device is replaced with a different device about high and low. The latter makes more sense so the first one felt like irrelevant knowledge that I had to disassociate with. I would love to hear how this translates to sound. Granted I can just pick my guitar up, but it's still helpful for ear training relationships

Bright eyes always detect glowing candle fire 🎉
This is insane.
Very clever!
not really useful, but year. I see no practical usage of this… when you start learning the fretboard some little advices like these ones could help a little, but eventually you will be using pentatonic shapes and dance around… and your fingers memorise all the patterns themselves.
No Ivan. this is massively useful. It's a fretboard matrix that is a foundations for understanding more in depth topics. I did a livestream on why this is fundamental to absolutely knowing your fretboard so that you can unlock all the music you want to play on guitar. You can watch it here. You might even enjoy it. ua-cam.com/video/ma1AxeNGdV4/v-deo.html

I was a professional pianist for years but in the "Nashville" scene. That is, I don't read music but I'm well-versed in chords, circles of fifths and fourths and basic music theory.
But, as a long-time pianist, the fretboard is so frustratingly stupid that it's caused a lot of frustration for me as someone who wants to learn to play guitar. Unfortunately, I can't say this video has helped me at all. I understand the relationship between the notes and I understand the mnemonic for remembering the sequence....but, honestly this is so illogical that I can't see much practical use for it. God, the fretboard is so stupid....
Ok. So the thing is you’re comparing a piano perspective to a new way of seeing how notes are laid out. You could think of the guitar as 6 staggered piano keyboards(think Jordan Rudess/Rick Wakeman). The BEADGCF mnemonic is essentially the white keys jumbled into a sequence of 4ths (B to F = #4). We find sharps/flats relative to the natural notes. I have another video that look in the linear pattern. When I look at a piano I always use the 3/2 black key pattern to find my way around. Because the fretboard is essentially uniform on each fret (apart from the position dots) we have to think in 2D like a chessboard. Have a watch of this video and see if you see things any clearer. ua-cam.com/users/livebDZYmhIlS4A?si=n-Tz2AV6coePX-cc
You'd be much happier with a mandolin. Tuned in perfect 5ths and the fretboard is 100% consistent and logical.
