I recently read on a guitar forum a post from a guy who had played for years and had been stuck for a while. He memorized the fretboard and suddenly one evening as he played...he was able to jam out and he played for a couple hours. He said it all came together because he could see what he was doing as he played things he knew while thinking of the notes he was playing. It made me realize that I need to be able to know what note I'm playing at all times, which is why I'm here! Thank you for creating these videos and the PDFs!
I do believe it’s essential to learn the notes, and I think that the insight a lot of people miss in a story like that is that you’re not thinking of the names of every note as you play them, but being able to think of a note and then immediately move your fingers to the right position is exactly what gives you the freedom to move all over the fretboard. Thanks for sharing that! 🎸🧪🤘
@@fretscience This makes a lot of sense especially after recently seeing a clip with Joe Bonamassa saying "if you're thinking about what to play, you're too late." It seems similar to Chess. You want to be thinking at least 3-5 steps ahead. When we know where we're going it's much easier to find paths to get there.

Hi Keith, I have been playing the acoustic guitar for about 30 years now. After years of feeling "trapped" within the confines of the first 5 frets, I decided that I needed to start learning the notes of the fretboard. I've watched countless videos on everything from the CAGED-system to triads. They all kept saying that I need to visualize the chords within the scales, but - try as I might - I just couldn't. This video is the first one I've seen, where I actually had two "aha-moments": how the diagonal movement in octaves relates to CAGED, and using the rectangle and stack for the pentatonic, as well as how the warp affects both. I really feel like your way of explaining these patterns has unlocked a door to visualization for me! Thanks!
Your stack method literally unlocked the entire fretboard for me. Thanks so much for your series of videos. Following them in order and they are amazing.
After years of trying to connect the fretboard, you have not only explained it best, but your graphics are incredibly clear. So grateful! I have work to do…but finally think I have the right roadmap to follow. Thank you!
I started playing guitar 60 years ago and used it mostly to play songs by others and then to write music to go with lyrics I wrote. Learning to read music has been so hard due to issues with my eyes keeping up with the written notes. In any case, after 10 years away from guitar and piano, I have a renewed interest in learning to play more than the basics. Thanks for sharing your methods of learning with us.
I made the exact same mistake. I had started playing when I was 15 ( I'm now 62) I played for a good 25years and got pretty good. But I always ran into that wall because I had never learned the notes. A lot of it was there was no such thing as the internet and I could never afford lessons. Life as it does over took me and I out down the guitar for many years. I had to focus more on raising my family and for the longest time never got back to it.I was finally able to pick it back about 15 years or so and I started from scratch. The first thing I did was to learn the note names and I couldn't believe how much my playing took off. It was so much easier learning theory after I took those first steps of learning the neck. My playing took off like lightning. Now I can play pretty much any thing I want to with proficiency. I play everything now from classical to absolute shredding. The best video I have ever seen on fretboard understanding. All of my learning in last 7 years of guitar playing were given a theoretical backup due to this video. A Real Pro!!
Describing the relationships between notes as a chess move really gave me some insight, playing an octave of whatever note you're already playing really is like moving a chess piece, knowing where each scale degree is in relation to your current note being played is exactly like the different movements of chess pieces.
I have weekly guitar lessons in U.K. and find this material is the Rosetta stone that unlocks the understanding of fretboard patterns without over whelming you.
Thanks! I definitely believe that good source materials plus access to a knowledgeable coach is the fastest way to advance. UA-cam alone isn’t nearly as good on its own. 🎸🧪🤘
I have just purchased your Fret Science Bundle PDF Bundle. On first glance this is highly relevant to supplement my guitar lessons with succinct information that does not over load. I will view it in the logical viewing order suggested to enhance my understanding. Thanks.
You are the best! I watched loads of videos from UA-cam but you are the most explicit and you give us the most logical explanations! All i can say is Thank You ! You are the best!
I’m truly glad you’re here, but if you’re just starting out, this may not be the best place to start. I usually recommend learning some chords first and starting out strumming some songs. My Cowboy Chord Superpowers video is worth watching after you’ve learned your first handful of chords, and then this is a great place to return when you feel ready to learn to play melodies and dip into jamming. Whatever you do, keep it fun and stick with it…it’s a rewarding experience!
Can someone give those who worked on this video medals for making the single best introduction to music theory and teaching you to actually "see" the fretboard for what it is? I recently discovered the caged system on my own because I had a basic understanding of all my majors and minors and well as some augmented and diminished chords and I finally started seeing what I was actually playing. It's made messing around a lot more interesting. I think caged is the biggest thing I wish I learned about sooner right next to scales.
Some troll earlier today asked “did Jimmy know the notes?”…now we know the answer is yes, he does! 🤣 In all seriousness, thanks for your kind words 🎸🧪🤘

Hey. Intermediate player here with basic music theory, but very little in relation to guitar. I can say firmly say your video was the most helpful among like 5 other videos with more views trying to teach guitar music theory
These lessons are awesome. I have learned the 3ps & the pentatonic shapes from them. Now I need to learn to move around so as to soloing does not sound mechanical. So there is lots to digest. Now learning the notes of the fretboard is a new insight. I will buying the pdf's in coming days. Thank you very much
That’s awesome, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that moving around the fretboard will make you sound less mechanical. BB King mainly played out of a very limited range of positions and was anything but mechanical-sounding. Working on phrasing is the biggest key to making better music!
Superb! I was excited to see and hear the patterns and shapes that I’ve picked up through 30 years of playing and exploring theory as a hobby explained and visualized. Love the tips and looking forward to checking out more of your videos. Glad I found our channel! Keep up the amazing work!

I’m only 9 minutes into this video, but learning about the vertical patterns being 4ths with the “diagonal” movement is mind blowing! Thanks for taking something I’ve over complicated and made simple
Really solid content with a fine teaching style. Definitely one of the very best theory/guitar mastery channels on the Tube! One of the nicest features for me is the multiple ways to conceive, learn and practice fretboard application.
This is the video that's been missing from your catalog until now! I agree with everything you mention in the first 30 seconds and look forward to brushing up with your exercises!
Great video! I had to figure this all out by myself years ago as this kind of content has only just started being pushed by the algorithm on UA-cam. I'd like to add that one thing that helped me a lot was memorising the shapes of ascending and descending intervals of each note starting from the root to any string. This basically meant I never had to memorise any scale shape ever again and if I know the names of all the notes on every fret, I can basically start a stack from anywhere by remembering the intervals that made up a scale.
💯- I talk about this approach some in my intervals video, but it deserves a more detailed treatment. Shell voicings for 7th chords are a great place to start. Cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
I made an all in one web app that teaches several different things. With my simple fretboard memorization tool, it took me a month to learn all the notes. My first drill is I set a timer, do random order of notes and find them all on the fretboard, the second drill right after is a random note on a random string. The random string really was a game changer because you have that laser focus going on due to trying to get a better time. Now I can do both drills together in under 3 minutes where as just the first drill took over 10 minutes alone when I first started. Practice, practice, practice.
If you can motivate yourself to practice that way, that’s great! I never found note-drill apps on a screen to transfer well to the actual guitar, but everyone should do whatever works for them
Thanks! There’s no avoiding practice, but I have found that if you understand why you’re practicing a concept, it’s a lot more motivating and satisfying. And I hope that the approaches I teach can reduce the repetitive nature of that practice time. Cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
Thank you so much for one of the best theory videos I’ve ever seen! Your voice pace, visuals, and examples made it so easy to follow along. Excited to keep practicing!
I was very surprised by the content this channel illustrated in this video! The information was well explained and went in depth where most music teachers would shake it off. Thank you so much for making such a topic well understood! New subbed, looking forward to coming back for more!😁🙏
As someone who has finally got this down, i wish i would have seen this earlier in life! Cheers! Thank you for a good informational video! Keep with it
Yes. Spend time early learning the fret board. What I did back in the seventies was easy. I drew a guitar neck. In-between the frets I wrote the notes. I then made copies. On each copy I circled the notes for a specific scale. I did this for all twelve major scales and related modes. I then drew a blank neck, and I showed which fingers were used when playing the scale. I had it memorized way before I finished making the charts.
Thank you for making this excellent video! I needed this video 30 years ago! 😂 with my limited spare time I have struggled to memorize the fretboard. Your video makes it really easy and now I finally have a plan! Thank you!

Just wanted to say thank you so much for this video. It's genius and so well explained. Halfway through I was already naming notes up and down the frets using the cycle of 4ths without having to look at my notes! I've been struggling to learn the fretboard for a while but I feel this approach is a real breakthrough for me. Just like some other comments I had several epiphanies and "A Ha" moments. I've been playing acoustic guitar for 16 years and electric and classical for 2 years. I also play the piano and tenor horn so I have a good musical background but this video has really moved me on with my theoretical knowledge and practical application. Thank you so much. I've subscribed and liked and am about to check out your other videos in order! I'm very excited. I would love to see the videos on learning to improvise that you mentioned. Many thanks from Herefordshire, England. xxx 😁🎸🎼🎵
Very cool! I’ve been playing guitar 55 years professionally in all genres. Started out as a sax player learned all my music theory, chords scales, etc. but wasn’t able to improvise on the sax very well at 14 years old. Then I picked up the guitar and just started playing by ear. I took my knowledge of music from the sax and applied it to the guitar. Obviously, I did not memorize the notes or the scales. I just figured out the pattern of minor scales major scales blues, major and minor Pentatonix scales, harmonic minor scales. And when I improvise I use key centers. I’m not a jazz musician at all, but it’s funny, sometimes I play with jazz musicians and we’re not even playing jazz tunes and I manage to improvise through the changes better than they do for some reason. Kind of mind baffling. But I really do like this video and your approach. I’m dyslexic so sometimes my brain just plays funny tricks on me when I look at all these notes trying to figure out what they are. You figured out some cool tools. I’m gonna have to give it a shot. Thank you!
I’m glad that you found it helpful (or at least interesting)…I’d be interested to hear if any of my other videos end up being helpful to you as well. Cheers! 🎸🧪🤘

3 years of tutorials, Chordify and gutarists at the studio m..it's just like they'll just thrkw out pentatonic knowledge in passing.
😢rummer but I just appreciate it man I'll hit you up thank you
Glad you’re here, man! 🎸🧪🤘
This is amazing. Played longer than I haven’t and have watched and read countless things about theory and how to understand scales, chords, etc better. This is by far the best I’ve seen.
Much appreciated, thanks! If you haven’t seen my other videos yet, I can’t wait to see your reaction 🤣🎸🧪🤘
The best video I have ever seen on fretboard understanding. All of my learning in last 7 years of guitar playing were given a theoretical backup due to this video. A Real Pro!!
Much appreciated, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
This channel changed guitar playing for me, and I don't know if I can recommend it enough. Thank you for all the insight.
That’s awesome to hear…glad it helped! 🎸🧪🤘
Thanks.
Thanks for your support! 🎸🧪🤘
This is the best explanation i found in 20 years i've been trying to learn the fretboard. Ty!
Great to hear, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
You are the best! I watched loads of videos from UA-cam but you are the most explicit and you give us the most logical explanations! All i can say is Thank You ! You are the best!
Much appreciated! 🎸🧪🤘
57 years old. Second day of playing guitar. My fingers are tingling. Didn’t follow much, but I listened and will again. Thank you.
@ Wow. Thanks for reaching out. I am practicing a little bit every day (I am not loving the finger tip acclimation process). But, yes, I will be back.
@@fretscienceNo man thank you for this really informative video. I'll be sharing this with a friend that wants to get back into guitar but just hasn't quite been able to yet but when he's able to get into it I think this will be perfect for him.
@@fretscience oh and can't forget about the circle of 4ths/5ths. That's been incredibly useful too.
I’ve watched tons of guitar videos over the last 10 years, and I finally found a channel I like. This one video will be a large stepping stone to my career. Thank you
Cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
Subbed. Watched all of your videos. Made my purchase of your bundle to support your channel. As a 60-yr old Mechanical Engineer, I love your systematic approach to teaching music. Thank you.
I just started playing, and this info is frickin invaluable, words can't convey how grateful I am right now, thank you, truly 😊🙏
Welcome aboard! 🎸🧪🤘
Dude! Your lesson taught me more than I have struggled with for years! Thank you!
That’s great to hear! 🎸🧪🤘
This is the first guitar video that I actually got. I’m new new but always run into chord and triad memorization. This is helping me a ton
I’m really glad to hear that it was understandable and helpful 🎸🧪🤘
So happy to have found this channel. The presentation, the pacing, the whole package is perfect. I cannot wait for this man’s book to come out, I’m buying it the second it’s released.
Much appreciated, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
We want the book! We want the book! We want the book! 😂
I have played bass guitar 6 years never understood the circle of 5ths till 9I came across your video
How you explaine it is so much easier to grasp thank you ❤
Happy to help! 🎸🧪🤘
One of, if not THE, best instructor on youtube. Appreciate you so much.
Wow, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
Hey. Intermediate player here with basic music theory, but very little in relation to guitar. I can say firmly say your video was the most helpful among like 5 other videos with more views trying to teach guitar music theory
That’s great to hear…I hope you find my other videos helpful as well! 🎸🧪🤘
You’ve really put a lot of pieces together for me. I knew the theory but you’ve made it tangible!
First video I've seen that explains the science of the fretboard so well. So glad I happen to stumble upon it
Welcome aboard! 🎸🧪🤘
Superb! I was excited to see and hear the patterns and shapes that I’ve picked up through 30 years of playing and exploring theory as a hobby explained and visualized. Love the tips and looking forward to checking out more of your videos. Glad I found our channel! Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks…glad you’re here! 🎸🧪🤘
best video ive seen on the basics of guitar layout. some people seem to understand this stuff intrinsically but NOT ME!!
Glad it was helpful! 🎸🧪🤘
I’ve played around with circle of fourths before but the way you explained and presented it clicked so so well! Thank you very much for this video
I’m glad it helped! 🎸🧪🤘
this video is amazing. having bought my first guitar 2 weeks ago, i know nothing about music theory. this is game changing for me, as i feel i have some fundamental knowledge, as well as a desire to go practice what i just learned!
I’m glad it connected with you…you might find my other videos a little tougher to chew on, but if you can find someone to answer your questions, you’re in the right place to make progress fast! 🎸🧪🤘
Your approach was extremely helpful for me to visualize the pieces of the fretboard.
Glad it helped! 🎸🧪🤘
this channel is criminally underrated. you are a fantastic teacher whose content I have used for years! let's get Fret Science past 100k subs and beyond in 2024! thank you for all you do, sir.
Thanks for your kind words! 🎸🧪🤘
Criminally!😂
I am 48 and had played piano as a child. I have been learning guitar for the past three years now. I really needed the encouragement and information in this video to begin to learn and unlock my fretboard. I am learning so much so quickly now , thanks so much to you!
That’s great to hear! 🎸🧪🤘
appreciate you being concise. wish more videos were as efficient as this one was.
I get a lot of comments about going too fast, so it’s nice to see that turned into a positive 🤣🎸🧪🤘
Excellent Lesson. Your outline on Practice routines is MOST helpful. Greatly appreciate your lessons & pdf files 👍🏽👍🏾🎸🕊.
Awesome, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
I’m only 9 minutes into this video, but learning about the vertical patterns being 4ths with the “diagonal” movement is mind blowing! Thanks for taking something I’ve over complicated and made simple
Glad it was helpful! 🎸🧪🤘
This is a wonderfully concise lesson with a lot of meat to it. I've ordered all the cheat sheets just on the strength of this video.
Thank you! 🎸🧪🤘
Stumbled on this and wanted you to know it’s excellent. Wonderful content taught in an accessible way. Thank you!
Much appreciated, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
Really solid content with a fine teaching style. Definitely one of the very best theory/guitar mastery channels on the Tube! One of the nicest features for me is the multiple ways to conceive, learn and practice fretboard application.
Much appreciated, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
This is by far, the best lesson I’ve seen on this topic.
Much appreciated, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
This amazing, incredibly clear, organized teaching. I'm getting this!
@ltb1919 Thanks for your kind words and your support! 🎸🧪🤘
best video ever!!!! I have seen more than 50 videos in last month about memorizing the fretboard, but this is the best!
Much appreciated, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
This is the video that's been missing from your catalog until now! I agree with everything you mention in the first 30 seconds and look forward to brushing up with your exercises!
Awesome, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
I was stuck till i found this video you have my gratitude as well as many others thank you so much.
Glad it helped! 🎸🧪🤘
This is absolutely stellar. I wish I had watched this years ago. Spectacular work and thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🎸🧪🤘
Cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
Yo Keith you are a legend, blessing UA-cam with your videos. Man U da greatest
Much appreciated 🤣🎸🧪🤘
I can’t believe your videos haven’t been recommended in my feed until now but I just subscribed. Thank you.
Glad you’re here…cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
Hi Keith, such a great help 🎉 amazingly clear and easy to understand. Your logical and direct to the point approach helps me to learn.
Thanks, David! 🎸🧪🤘
oh. m. god. You can''t imagine how much this helped me as a self learning bedroom guitarist. Thank you so much
Glad it helped!
I never found note-drill apps on a screen to transfer well to the actual guitar, but everyone should do whatever works for them
Great video and great teacher it has to just click to be understood and this helped the confusion. Practice is the only way to nail it in now
Thanks! There’s no avoiding practice, but I have found that if you understand why you’re practicing a concept, it’s a lot more motivating and satisfying. And I hope that the approaches I teach can reduce the repetitive nature of that practice time. Cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
Hong Kong guitarist here. This vid helps a lot, its greatly recommended
Glad it was helpful! 🎸🧪🤘
Its always great getting a post from FS 💯🎸
The practicing approach is GOLD
Great job with all of your videos. They’re very helpful. Thanks!

Thank you so much for one of the best theory videos I’ve ever seen! Your voice pace, visuals, and examples made it so easy to follow along. Excited to keep practicing!
You're very welcome…cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
I was very surprised by the content this channel illustrated in this video! The information was well explained and went in depth where most music teachers would shake it off. Thank you so much for making such a topic well understood! New subbed, looking forward to coming back for more!😁🙏
This may be the best guitar video ever, thank you for this.
That’s far too kind, but greatly appreciated! 🎸🧪🤘

As someone who has finally got this down, i wish i would have seen this earlier in life! Cheers! Thank you for a good informational video! Keep with it
wow how is thisvideo not shared and mention all over guitar forums great lesson if i seen this before I would save money on the books i bought
Glad it was helpful! 🎸🧪🤘
Great to see the man behind the magic your lessons are invaluable, wishing you the best in the coming year✌🏻
Thank you…happy new year! 🎸🧪🤘
The graphics at 3:55 gave me such an aha moment, thank you so much, incredibly well made video that taught me so much in 23 minutes!
Glad it helped! 🎸🧪🤘
Thank you for making this excellent video! I needed this video 30 years ago! 😂 with my limited spare time I have struggled to memorize the fretboard. Your video makes it really easy and now I finally have a plan! Thank you!
Awesome…that’s great to hear! 🎸🧪🤘
My God......What a way of teaching...bravo 👏
Thanks for this! Your videos have been great for my guitar journey, i look forward to more!

@@fretscience awesome, thank you for being a positive force in the universe!

THANK YOU, Keith,...TO THE MAX!!!!!!, FOR ALL OF YOUR "FRET SCIENCE" LESSONS, AND INSIGHTS!!!!IMHO: => THEY'RE ALL "PURE GOLD"!!!!!!
🎸🧪🤘
Wish we just went up to the letter L instead calling things sharps.
🤣🎸🧪🤘
Time for a new system?
If we go microtonal the sharps and flats can take on a new meaning, throw in the while alphabet why not...
You should rather focus on learning Celcius and Kilometres instead of Fahrenheit and Miles. Because that makes more sense. 😊
@princefriendship Freedom doesn't have to make sense. You know what freedom starts with? F. You know what communism starts with? C. Coincidence? Possibly. But what if it isn't?
@@john236613 What the communism has to with International System? Are you out of mind? Do you meen that the people of those countries who are using international systems are not free? Even scientific community of America like NASA uses it because they don't have any choice of freedom like you.
Hey Keith,
Lately I´ve resarted playing and I decided to dig in youtube so I can learn new concepts!
I can tell you, nobody get in to your level nowadays, concerning lecturing a such dificult instrument!
Congrats
Much appreciated, thanks! 🎸🧪🤘
Learning guitar self taught and you have earned that sub my guy you are a legend and I'm so happy and grateful I have come across your video thank you for all your lessons and tips I appreciate you so much for everything you do

Heck yeah 🤟
What an outstanding lesson, so much great material, really helps, thank you
Much appreciated! 🎸🧪🤘
the best guitar information channel out there
Thank you! 🎸🧪🤘
Many thanks from Herefordshire, England. xxx 😁🎸🎼🎵
Thanks for your kind words…it’s great to hear that this material is helpful! 🎸🧪🤘
Great lesson. Exactly where I'm at right now and you do a great job breaking it down.
Rock on! 🎸🧪🤘
Cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
How nice not to have a
Tutor that rips the neck up. And then starts the
Lesson.. You take the time to educate people
To have confidence in the process..Many Thanks..Kevin
Glad I stumbled upon this video. This really made sense and was quite opening.
Wow, this is so great! Really appreciate this video! Thank you thank you!
Glad it was helpful! 🎸🧪🤘
@fretscience, thank you so much for all the content. It's the first time I'm trying to learn guitar theory, and you make everything seem less overwhelming🙏
I feel like I'm getting the hang of the circles of 4ths and 5ths and the rectangle and stack method.
If I were to add one remark, then I'd say that the videos would hugely benefit seeing you play the guitar whilst instructing on the various topics. I say this because at this moment I'm struggling to position my fingers on the fretboard, whilst playing the rectangle and stack.
Otherwise, love your videos! Keep it up 🤘
I appreciate the feedback…cheers! 🎸🧪🤘
