I was a nomad freelancer for 3 years 2011-2014, and then last year I went on to travel for another year in SE Asia. I have watched tons of travel videos and I need to say... They're pretty much all insufferably pretentious with the same editing style and music, and focusing on their maker's faces. Your videos are a breath of fresh air, simple, genuine, informative and I think you're just an endearing bloke with whom travelers like me probably have a lot in common. Cheers!

I think rm20 is quite possible in KL.. But need to be extra careful in what you spend & which places you go of course..
      Breakfast
      Nasi Lemak - basic rm2.. Tea tarik - 1:80
      =rm3.80
      Lunch :
Noodles or Mee hoon Sup or nasi lemak with chicken : rm 5.00
      Warm Water : 0.20
      =rm5. 20
      Dinner
      Nasi goreng rm6.00
      Plain water : rm0.20
      =rm6.20
      So for meals 3.80+5.20+6.20 = rm15. 20
The balance rm4. 80 is for moving around a bit..

20 ringgit a day? EASY! Go to a supermarket and look for the cooked food section. You can get meals for 3 ringgit a plate but you cant be picky. Simple stuff like fried noodles. You can even get a whole deep fried chicken leg quarter for 5 ringgit in there. You could split it and have the drumstick for lunch and thigh for dinner. For breakfast you can get some buns for a ringgit each. Sometimes sold in morning markets. They usually have some homemade buns or cakes for breakfast. 1-2 ringgit a piece. To save more, drink water ahaha. To save even more, drink water from the river of life 😂

Good try. Now here is my suggestion:
For breakfast, look for chinese vegetarian restaurant that have a green sign, you can have a rice with 3 dishes for just RM2 with free flow of plain water. There's a lot of them around KL and Selangor, the sign that mentioned RM2 is in Chinese so just look for the big number 2 if you can't read Chinese 😁. For lunch, head to Dharma Real Guan Yin Sagely Monastery at Jalan Ampang, near Petronas Towers, just 5 minutes walk from KLCC. They have a canteen at the back offering delicious vegetarian buffet at reasonable price, open at around 11AM to 2PM. For dinner, you will have a lot of options because you have quite a lot of balance left from those 2 meals and now you can choose what you want. Try again.

Vegetarian food is costly elsewhere in Malaysia!!!

    • @OvDevilz
      @OvDevilz 4 роки тому +6

That's why I am suggesting the place as well. I think rice plus 3 dishes for RM2 is quite reasonable and full plate of rice with dishes at the monastery is about RM7 - RM12 depending on what you are having but those two places are relatively cheaper compared to other places with the same portions. And we are talking about KL city and Selangor town. Kampung Baru is a good place for cheap and tasty variation too but comparing the portions, still is a bit pricey. Nasi Lemak for example, you can get the basic (rice, sambal, anchovies, cucumber, boiled egg - quarter) for RM2 but you need to pay extra for additional dishes. You can get RM1.50 Nasi Lemak but the potion is less satisfying. And that's only the food where some places even charge 20cents for plain water. 😓

Breakfast Roti canai + teh Tarik just RM4.00. Don't eat at Nasi Kandar Restaurant. The price slightly higher.
Lunch with Nasi Campur ( rice + any curry + mineral water ) = RM6.00
High Tea, don't go to Nasi Kandar Restaurant ( Roti telur + sky juice ) = RM 3.00
Dinner at any Malay Thai restaurant ( Nasi goreng kampung / Kueyteow goreng / mee goreng + hot tea ) = RM7.00
    Total RM20.00

It is possible to do a day in KL with RM20 given you are willing to walk up to 25 minutes from Pasar Seni.
    Breakfast:
2 pieces of Roti Canai + Teh Tarik at Mansion Tea Stall for about RM4
    Lunch:
Thali set at ABC Bistro Cafe, Brickfields for RM6. This complete vegetarian meal comes with soup and a desert. You can just drink plain water because the meal is so filling.
    Dinner:
Splurge at KFC with 1-pc Rice Plate for RM8.60 in Nu Sentral.
These places are walkable from Pasar Seni.

Nak seribu daya ... Rm20 a day. Can do la. If you seek Mcd for lunch, burger king for dinner sure not enough. Here one example. On breakfast, don't take light meal like roti canai, but take a little bit heavy, nasi lemak or bihun goreng. Aim to make you survive through lunch without meal. For lunch, just eat fruit slices and plenty of water. Wait until around 5-6, then dig for your dinner. Heavy one. Make sure with plenty of vegetables cause vegetables is going to make satiety until sleep time. If you still hungry after dark, have another fruit slice that you bought earlier. Breakfast RM 5, Fruit slices RM3. Dinner RM7-8, Fruit Slice RM3. Total RM18-19. Easy peasy.

Three years ago I was working in a remote area 64 km (40 miles) away from where I live. I travelled daily by motorbike to start work at 8.30 a.m. I use to stop by at a small coffee shop for breakfast. I have 5 pieces kuih muih (curry puffs and pastries) for RM 1.50 and a glass of hot nescafe for RM1.00. I also buy 2 sizeable pkts. of Nasi Lemak @ RM1.00 each for my lunch. I have my bottled drinking water at my workplace which cost RM1.50 for a 1.5 litres. So my breakfast cost me RM2.50 and my lunch cost me RN2.00, Drinking water for the day RM3.00. After work as I head back home I stop at a restaurant and have my dinner of Nasi Campur (Mixed Rice) which cost me RM4.00 and a RM1.00 hot nescafe to keep me alert for my 64 kms motorbike ride back home. All in it costs me RM 2.50 + 2.00 + 3.00 + 5.00 = RM12.50.
Daily petrol cost was another ,RM6.00 for the trip to and fro. My pay was RM 3,500.00 per month, enough for a retiree having his own house and none to support.
Costs aside the travelling was a thrill daily. I use to see some animals including snakes, a variety of monkeys including the scary berok specie that moves alone or with just a mate. Afte some time it becomes a routine and the excitement is lost.

5 pcs kuih for RM1.50! Which area was that? It was RM2 for 5 pcs at my place back then but now it's for 4 pcs only. Nasi campur for RM4 is pretty rare. Nasi + ayam + sayur normally cost me RM6-7.

    • @samraj3179

Mohd K, it is a small Kg. Cowboy town. I was surprised myself, the very first time I ate there. Imagine Nescafe at RM1.00 when at other places, it was priced at not less than RM1.50. The customers who "lepaked" there too were very friendly. Besides the food cooked daily was not in huge quantities and so you get the home cooked flavour with good taste. No gimmicks. I enjoyed the rural setting and the way people went about their daily work activities. Of course the price of Kuih is 5 pcs. for RM2.00 in my town.
When long ago, the price of chicken satay in my town was RM0.25 per stick, it was selling at Bukit Mertajam town for RM 0.20 per stick.
I am an old timer, so everytime the price increases a little I am more aware of it. In the early 70's, kuih was only 5 sen, Nasi Lemak was 10 sen and Ice Kacang (ABC) was ten sen. Light Milk tea was 20 sen per one litre bottle. If you want Thicker Milk Tea, it was 30 sen per one litre bottle.

Many of the tourists love to visit Batu Caves. But if you wish to have cheap but delicious/variety of food, it's a 500 metres walk from Batu Caves to Seri Gombak. There is a Yellow State Free Bus - one every hour, after 5 minutes - press the button to stop at Taman Sri Gombak - but it's better you tell the driver where you want to stop. You can use Grab (the Malaysian Uber version) - I think it's about RM7.00 to RM8.00. Look for the row of stalls - a mix of Malay, Indian (pure Indian), Mamak and Chinese... (along Jalan SG 1/8) - there are more actually but I leave that to you guys to explore.

For rm20, you got to go hawker stalls.
Breakfast like mee goreng, nasi goreng, kwetiau goreng & plain nasi lemak you can get around rm4 (plate full + egg if your are lucky) or less + the tarik rm2 or less.
Then you would have around rm14+ left. Average of rm7 for lunch / dinner or you choose to have heavy lunch & light dinner or visa versa.
Lunch on precooked food in Malay stalls normally cheaper then specially cooked hot dinner. Normally we don't have precooked dinner because it would be quite stale already by then.
Nan is more expensive as compared to plane roti canai but more filling. With rm20 you can NOT go extravagant like having cheese or garlic nan. Just plain nan & plain water or teh o only. No milky dirink too.
    Got it?

Pronunciation tips. Say the word as it sounds when you read the alphabets. A = ah, B = bh, C = ch, thus canai is 'cha-nigh'. Kandar = k (kh) a (ah) n (nasal n) d (dah) a (ah) r (rah) = kan-dhar, kan as in (khan minus the h), similarly Lumpur = Lum (l = leh, u = u, m = mm) as in 'loom', pur (p = peh, u = uh, r = rah) as in 'poo-r'. You should meet your target then. But don't do it everyday. Treat yourself as well another day.

Get a touch and go card if you're a frequent public transport passenger, just tap the reloaded card and go, the fare prices are discounted and not much fuss with the tokens too :) Saves money in a long run
