Using My Base Model M1 MacBook Air as a GAMING Rig! (Thermals, RAM Usage, Fortnite, Tomb Raider)

- I wanted to take the gaming performance of the new M1 MacBook Air 8GB memory version to the extreme. I tested it playing 1440p games via an external gaming monitor to see what the performance would be like.
Bear in mind, these games/apps are not yet optimized and should still be running on Rosetta 2. Therefore, the performance you are witnessing in this video is in no way the final product. Stay tuned on this channel as I will be running more gaming and performance benchmarks when new updates are released.

Hey! Great Video, I’ve bought the MacBook Air myself and looking forward to play on it a little.
You really did a great job with showcasing the Mac. As for future videos i would recommend you putting music under the video, especially when you do a time lapse like you did for example by around 10:15. Also I would recommend when showing the FPS or Settings doing it from upfront and not from the side with zooming in!

Great rundown, thank you!
Solid review, so thank you for not doing typical geekbench testing and others like that.

Thinking of getting an m1 mini for some light gaming and moderate video/photo editing. Wasn’t sure to just get the 8gb model or spend the insane $200 penalty for an extra 8gb. From the looks of it the 8gb model should work just fine. Awesome video!
I love the M1, it dominates the competition when it comes to productivity and general laptop. But I think no one should buy this if the sole purpose of their purchase is 100% gaming.
I don't think nobody on this world would buy ithis solely for gaming, but you can't be working 100% of the time, I sometimes game with my friends for 0.5-1hr on free nights so this is very informative
Disagree. It runs everything so smoothly. I have a gaming pc that is awesome at gaming but worthless with everything else. Macs are now good at everything, and I don't have to sacrifice anything when switching.

Hey, do you think that using the Air for longer time in intensive tasks or gaming, would somehow higher temperature damage internals(talking about long term usage, for a couple of years)? There is no fan, to help the air cool down :/
I’m still undecided if I should go for Air with 16GB ram or take the base MBP for the same amount of money?
P.S. +1 subscriber, you’re doing a great job!
It has temperature protection if it gets too hot, but you should buy the macbook pro with 16 gigs if you want to actively game on it, but remember this is NOT a gaming pc. The fact that it works to play some titles rather well its just a nice twist of fate, but not really a gaming rig you know..

Do you know if there’s a big differents between the 7-core and the 8-core gpu? Btw keep up the good work!
I guess it 7 core gpu
Between the 7 core and 8 core GPU there's is about a 4 to 10 fps diffrence
I do not own any of these devices yet(on the way :) ) but from what ive seen in about 20+ videos the differences is not that big in the first 20minutes.. then u will see some performance drop(but it is not because of gpu but heat-no fan) id definitely go for pro if u consider gaming for at least 1hour. But to answer your question, it is not big difference
Difference is ~10%
In world of warcraft it makes the difference between a solid 60fps native res or 40s-50s turned down. idk if thats the RAM being better in my MBP or the gpu XD
I am willing to use this laptop for atleast 5-6 years. My usage is basically multitasking(document editing, 15+ chrome tabs, netflix) and light programming everyday. So with this usage will I able to sustain this laptop for atleast 5-6 years with 8 GB of RAM?
It would last much longer if the part doesn’t get damaged, it’s an electronic product and might go bad. To safeguard it for atleast 3 years you must buy the apple care + it’s 22k. If anything go wrong after the 1 year warranty, it will cost big amount even close to 50-60k or more as these macbooks are hard to repair so they would just replace.
8gb ram is more than enough! People want to pay for the extra ram they would probably never use. Don’t think about future proofing, If 8gb works for your need today, it will be fine 5 years later as well.
You'll be fine with 8GB. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM that I use for basically the same things you mentioned (+ some light video editing / gaming) and it still works just fine over 4 years later, battery is still amazing never had an issue I'm waiting for it to die to buy an ARM Mac. So go for it! I don't think you need Apple Care+ (never had it on any of my Macs and never had a single issue).
@@simon4512 care+ for mac is must, I have had my iMac display replaced in just 1.5 years, without warranty cost over 800usd. It's good to have otherwise it's a gamble.

Why do you use a seperate HDMI adaptor when your Apple multi port adaptor has HDMI on it?
I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps it has something to do with the bandwidth per port, but I can only guess
I am wondering the same thing as the newer version of the apple adapter does 60hz 4k and supposedly 144hz
I know this is a very old post, but after I tried running a mouse, HDMI out, and power through the same multiport adapter, I got crazy mouse lag. Now I set things up the same way as in this video and now have no issues. I do usually open the MacBook and turn the screen brightness to off if playing a demanding game. I find it really helps with cooling.
Do you think the performance will improve noticably if I upgrade MBA to 8 core gpu and 16 GB ram ?
Btw keep up the good work
Yes about this video will be great
Thank you
Yes, probably, because 8gb model is using at least 1 GB of swap(you can think of it like RAM but stores data on SSD/HDD which is not that important at the moment, its definitely slower than RAM), having more RAM will provide good headroom.
Unless you are pushing the M1 hard (and I mean as in a professional hard) you aren’t going to notice it. My MBA with 8GB is crushing my MBP 16” for everyday tasks lol
@@CAM-hc8ip I am just a beginner but I intend to keep the MBA for a minimum of 4 years so that's why I was wondering that should I go for 16 GB.
