- This is a quick video on how to remove the dash off a Chevy Cavalier, I'm sure this video can be used for many different years of cavs but this is for a 04. If you have any questions or need help just let me know. This is most ideal for replacing the stock radio. Sorry for shaking a little, i was using a camera and it was hard to keep it steady.

Awesome video. I just repaired my cig.lighter / power port which had come loose behind the dash. I can charge my phone again!! Watching your video made it a no-brainer that took me less than an hour. '95 Z24-Cavalier. Thanks.
WOW !!! This video was great ! It was very useful to me when I installed an instrument cluster on my daughters car. If I did not see this video, I would have paid $280 to have the old cluster re-built. Instead I only paid $75 for the part and just over one hour to do the whole job.

Thank you Bruce!! I had to replace my daughter's radio and was really struggling to remove the dash. She brought out her laptop and said that she found a video that might help. I followed your step-by-step instructions and they worked perfectly. I did lose one screw when putting everything back together, but no big deal. You sure saved me alot of time and money!!
Christ there's a lot of torque screws. No wonder why I busted my '96 dash all to shit trying to get the radio installed. Thanks a ton for this vid - I'm in the process of doing this right now. Life saver.

Very helpful, my buddy almost broke my whole dash trying to do this until I showed him the video... Still ended up breaking one of the clips in the front but someone else put this dash through the ringer before i got the car, this video was amazing!
Thanks for the video. Helped me install my daughters new radio. Took me less then 45 minutes to do it the second time because I forgot to plug the mic into the back.
The fact you say don't touch the airbag makes me want to touch the airbag when I do this job next week.

Just a recommendation for you if I may. I would consider getting a couple different tools. One of them is called a scew-driver, and the other is nut drivers. Instead of using the torx bits you can use a 7mm socket(typical size on almost all GM vehicles) I use a scew-driver and the 7mm driver in my drill with the clutch adjusted. You can pick that stuff right up at home depot for about $30-40 total..minus the drill. You can make that money back quick doing some other cavilers :-) Great video!

Yes, I should have removed the air-bag fuse !!! I kept looking at that thing. My son did most of the work, and when I told him to keep his head away from the right side of the dash and away from the air-bag, he told me that they were told at school to remove the air-bag when working close to it. ???

You will need a RADIO HARNESS this is what plugs into your existing cords then from there you will need to hook the wires up the the new aftermarket radio you install.
You will also need a MOUNTING KIT the one your looking for is for all GM cars and look on the back of the box it will say for "Chevy Cavalier 01-05" or something like that after that, your pretty much good to go...

Before starting I'd just unplug the battery. You don't have to worry about shock, or the airbag going off on you.

I was also wondering about this. I'm going to try this pretty soon because I need to replace the stepper motors in the instrument cluster. All the tutorials I've read + this video has made it pretty easy, but I'm also a newbie at and don't know which tools I need to remove the torque screws and the bolts in the glove compartment. It'd be really helpful if someone could answer.

I see you have a switch laying there under the radio. I'm assuming that's to power the radio on/off since there's no ACC wire behind the radio. Never see that mentioned anywhere and the switch is the route I took.
Just to throw it out there for every, Cavs of all years should work for this. Although working on a Canadian car it had 10 mil bolts instead of tourques.
hey question.. totally offsubkect but the cig lighter thing by the steering wheel can you plug in a car charger for cell phone in that one? I have a cavalier and mine either doesn't work for car charger for cell or it is broken.

works for a 2000 Z24 as well? i need to get the skinny dash peice located closest to the window. its snapped in 2 peices and i want to repair or replace it.
I need to replace the dash cap on a 01 cavalier that the dealership destroyed trying to take out. Any Ideas on how to replace that without pulling the entire dash or windsheild

hey.. when you put your aftermarket stereo.. did you do something with the theftlock.. did you buy something? because when i remove mine.. my car dosent start because the theftlock..
excellent video for my 2000 cavalier, but the downfall is, someone has either wrecked it and slammed into the dash, or some moron had taken it out before hand and busted every single dash plastic anchor and cracks all over the dang thing, and for some reason it still had a factory cassette type of radio in it..
@TheDrmort Thank you haha, and yeah, some people try to charge you so much for such an esay job, its the labor they're getting you for you know. But its a lot easier to do some research yourself to find how to do it, then just spend an hour or two to do it, not to bad haha thank you though
What tool/size do I need to remove the torque screws? Sorry I'm a noobie at this stuff
You need an interface to install the new head unit right?
Did u have a theft system go off when u changed out your radio
works on a 2005 as well. If you have no access to a torque bit, 7mm works as well. kinda ridiculous you have to rip the entire dash out to access the radio. This is at least my 5th time doing this lol....smh
how do you remove just the air vent? my driver side air vent wont move left/right.
Just a quick helpfull reminder to people who plan on doing this, REMOVE the batery cables connected to the battery only for your own safety.
Do you think a 98 Cavalier would be set up similarly?

The screws are 7mm if you don't have a torx

Those are 7mm bolts, not torq.....
They're both.
Like Sean said, there are both T15 torx and 7mm bolts (the 7mm are both located in the glove box).
I think you should have hit the airbag, You know, so we all can see how not to do it lmao
