My dad and I wanted to say Thanks for your great instructions.
We replaced the fuel pump in my 2003 Cavalier yesterday. My dad knew kinda how to do it, but I made sure he watched your video to make sure we were on the right track. It was very helpfull!

I have an 04 cavalier been sitting for a year and a half, got it to fire up won’t stay running, not getting fuel, have to flush the fuel system and put in a new fuel pump. Thank you so much for this video, mine is far more rusted than this, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Your video was top notch. I am a novice mechanic but i was able to change out a 2003 cavalier pump with no issues. The post above talked about the anti friction pads so I did have to pry the tank but everything else was spot on. Symptoms were car died while wife was driving. I could turn key but never heard pump kick on. Fuses good so pulled tank. New pump and filter was 298.00 at Oreilly in Hot Springs Arkansas. Again thanks for the post.....gave me the inspiration

Hands down best mechanic video I have seen on UA-cam. Starting with diagnosis and other possible causes before taking out the tank has probably saved some people lots of time and money while giving comprehensive step by step instructions with helpful tips has saved others frustration, time, and busted knuckles. Thank you for your time and effort to make and upload this video. Shame on anyone who posts any negative comments. This guy made this to help others out of the kindness of his heart, while you are simply an ungrateful POS. I for one appreciate how much easier this video made my life so I will give it a thumbs up and subscribe to his channel to show my support. Keep up the good work and know that there are people out there who are grateful for what you have done for the good of us all.

Thank you for the positive feedback and kind words, i appreciate all the support. as you noticed there will always be someone to try and drag others down with negativity instead of simple suggestions if they have found an easier way or what not that would be beneficial, there was a time when i would let negative comments or thumbs downs get to me, i have since learned to let it go and focus my attention on the ones who appreciate what im trying to do like yourself :) thanks again

I couldn't agree more with this comment. Thank you so much for your time and explanation. Even though this video is fairly old. I just watched it today as of 9/5/2017 and found exactly the information I was searching for. You did an excellent job of describing your process and methods. I will certainly subscribe!

Thanks for contacting me with the info and further repair video. People dont seem to want to hear what it takes to fix their shite. Even if you are saving them trouble. Having your well explained step by step video is a godsend. In the case of the car I was trying to help, access was gained beneath the seat cushion. the car was way out in the woods. It had to be at a certain temp. alum wire conn at that floor pump supp. conn. was poor contact. video shows it with red safety snap hanging

Wiring diagram part is interesting. Kind of ironic you post this video. We ended up on a 17 hour round trip in an '88 Chevy 1500 truck that required a roadside fuel pump (actually entire tank/fuel pump assembly) job over the last weekend, long story, but pretty simple job and made it home just fine. Keep up the good videos...

@000030stephen thank you. glad you liked it, i will work on some troubleshooting vids, i feel electrical is my strong point, not just in automotive, im a industrial mechanic as well, and work with 480v on a daily basis, not as user friendly, however we use low voltage to control the high, therefore there is allot of control circuits, including relays, timers, controllers,PLC's all the things involved to automate equipment, so when it comes to electrical troubleshooting, i love it :)

@2JDT4 yes there is. the new plug comes with a pinout diagram. you will need to wire it according to the diagram. it's pretty straightforward. the 2 black conductors are different gauges. if I remember correctly the other 2 were pretty close to the same colors. however just follow the new diagram that comes with a new plug

Just completed a fuel pump replacement on a 02 cavalier.
    1. To remove the relay, the blue lock bar must be pried out towards the fender
    2. The relay block is labeled on the side, next to the fender (A is closer to the fender, B is closer to the engine.)
    3. Under the car the gray power wire was in C, black/white ground was in B
    4. Run 12 volts from battery directly to gray wire just to make sure the pump is bad.
    5. Plug in new pump first using the connectors to make sure it turns on.

you mentioning the part about problems with corrosion, a few weeks before my 04 cavalier stopped running I would have it on cruise and the cruise would kick itself off for no reason. sometimes i could get it to come right back on and other times it would not. also RIGHT before the car "chugged" out on me the low traction light came on and when I started up a hill and pressed the gas it started cutting off, backed it down to 3rd, felt it kick in pressed gas and it cut off for good.

Quick question if you don't mind great video I just wanted to ask you if the sending unit isn't showing any voltage in the positive pin what does that mean I need a new sending unit? because my fuel pumps not working and I wasn't getting any readings from the harness at the top or a plugged into the fuel pump so I went to the stores and still nothing at the sending unit any ideas and again thanks for everything

@zloben9000 thank you, yea believe me i wanted too. this was on a Sunday. i recommended to change the fuel filter while we were there, easy enough, when i got there all i had was the new fuel pump to work with, and no parts stores near that were open, so i just did what i could with what i had to get him going, i ran into him the other day, he assured me he changed the fuel filter the following weekend and the car is running great, this is his daughters car

I know this is an old video an all but, Im hoping for a response anyway. I have a 2002 cavalier and while watching your vid I noticed that little panle with the 3 plugs. I'm curious what those are for I was recently under mine also trying to figure out some serious idle issues, I noticed that one of the connection was just hanging and had 1 broke wire. The plug has 2 wires red and white says A B C D , only C&D are used. With the letters PED 13 at the bottom and for the life of me can not figure out what the **** its for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thumbs up on the wire splice -- soldered connections.
One long-life improvement you may want to think about and/or try. As I'm sure you know, most would probably just use crimp barrel connectors. However, corrosion usually does such types of repair in over the long run. Plus, corrosion gets under the wire insulation and begins the long cancerous death of the creeping green crud.
I usually use two sleeves of heat shrink, one over the first. But, before the first tube of heat shrink, I apply a little liquid wire insulation to the solder joint and where the bare wire meets its insulation. This provides just a little more protection against moisture invasion.

I had the same problem with my Cavalier (fuel pump not running even though the relay was working) This is a great to the point video and did give me some good ideas. But my problem turned out to be different and I'm only commenting about it in case it may help someone else.
My fuel pump was not running even though the relay was clicking in and transferring power to the pump. Without going into all the things I tried and tested I'll cut to the chase.
I found the ground wire between the battery and the chassis was bad (The ground to the motor was still good) No chassis ground and most things on the car still worked including the engine cranking and the dashboard, but the fuel pump did not. I hope this helps someone.

    • @keemez
      @keemez 2 роки тому

I also had my share of frustrations with my 03. I replaced the pump once only to have the same problem develop again later on. I tested the original pump on the bench (naturally, after I had already done all the hard work) and found it to work just fine. The real problem was the inline connector near the right rear strut area. There was poor connectivity on the 12v to pump terminal. I wound up modding that one pinout in the connector block and it worked flawlessly after that. Nice work, GM. One problem among MANY on that poc.

@littleelvisofMA that was the estimate from the other repair shop including labor, that's the resin why he had it towed for me to do the job. and for the price you gave split that in half my cost, you will find if you don't do the work yourself, labor is what jacks the price,

Great vid. the wiring diagram explanation was a big help!
My issue is on a 2000 cavalier with 2.2L: when i turn the key on I can hear the pump cycle for a few seconds then turns off (assume that is normal) but zero fuel pressure, I checked at the fuel injector inlet with nothing attached to the line and no fuel flow, so i disconected line at the fuel filter inlet and connected pressure gauge there and zero pressure. The car has 1/4 tank of fuel. Can a pump run and still be bad?
    Thanx !

Hello , I have a question about air compressor I have a huge 80 gallong 3 cylinder oil belt driven 17cfm air compressor. I bought a nice Ingersoll Rand ti-max 1/2 impact wrench they stated the tool needed 5 cfm to run. But now that I recived it in the real owners manual they state it needs like 24 cfm to run ! When I bought my air compressor I choose the biggest one there was so I would be sure this never happened. Will my compressor be able to run properly my impact wrench ? Thanks a lot !!

I have a 2003 cavalier. Driving home yesterday, started to lose power when i pushed on the gas, the car then died on me. I tried starting the car, plenty of crank power, it would start briefly, sputter and then die again. Can i take off the hose on the gas filter on the engine side of the filter and try starting the car to see if the fuel pump is working correctly, meaning to see if fuel shoots out? What other possible issue do you think it could be?
