Like one's clothing choices, interior design can be intensely personal. However, unlike clothing which of course, you can change every day, interior design is a bit more permanent. Classic interior design can actually mean a wide variety of things ranging from more traditional styles
like English country home to more modern aesthetics like Bauhaus and mid-century modern. In fact, these days, you don't even have to commit to appointing your space in just one style. Raphael and Teresa's interior design for example leans heavily toward traditional aesthetics as you're seeing here but even they don't stick to just one school of design. You can experiment with multiple styles at the same time to find a blend that's unique to you. If you look at modern home retailers, furniture companies, and design firms, it's clear that traditional design is not the most popular style today.
Traditional design as it's used today is most chiefly inspired by 18th and 19th century European home decor. This style was formal and sumptuous embracing color, pattern, curved lines, and details aplenty. In other words, it's really the opposite of minimalist style and it's often described by adherence as being elegant.
There are many classics out there, of course, but we think that this curated list of 11 choices will suit gentlemen who, like us, don't want to be in a space that will seem hopelessly dated in 10 years' time. Colors, patterns, finishes, and even the size of different furniture pieces can wax and wane over time but we think that this particular list of classics will never go out of style.

I was classically trained in piano, and to me nothing is sadder than someone with a piano in their home despite never playing it i.e. just for the looks. If you do buy a piano, I highly recommend you also try playing it! It helps with mental issues like keeping away dementia, it helps improve hand-eye coordination, and you can impress guests and yourself with some beautiful music!
I think that if you have guests over pretty often, having a piano and hiring a pianist for a party or gathering is a good idea.

As an artist I can tell you, if you want to avoid gallery prices my recommendation is to contact artists directly. Many, me included, are happy to work with you. The benefits are a) better price (depending on the artwork) and b) you will own a true original artwork that was made specifically for you. Cheers!!
Artists always have work available that they were not intending to sell but may do so.
This is 100% true, find an artist you like, and get a commission. I personally regularly buy art

Exactly. It looks too trendy for me, and it’ll go out of fashion a couple years. For fashion, general trends can be good but for interior design, timeless is best.

As a side note to the piano, please do tune it at least once a year especially if you expect to have visitors who actually play the piano. Also, if you have friends who are musicians, get them to advise your purchase, as a good piano can be gotten for an excellent price if you are prepared to spend some time hunting, both with dealers, and places like Gumtree, etc.
It all depends on temperature and relative humidity and age of the piano, some need to be tuned more often...
Gentleman's Gazette, it’s the change in humidity and temperature that causes a piano to go out of tune. The more stable those two things, the longer it will stay in tune.
I know, I am a pianist. I just find it really annoying when a piano is not looked after.
tnmtemerity and also put them along the inside wall and always get an iron frame piano and a stool with storage.. I don’t play.. my mum does and has a 30s baby grand and a nifty metronome from the same era. She’s also got a pianola and heaps of rolls. And a few music cabinets for her music books
Matthew Hilberts, I agree. That is always very disappointing.
I feel like some of these risk coming off as phony. Having a piano if you don't play, taxidermy if you don't hunt, a pool table if you don't play billiards, it a book shelf curated as a decoration, rather than a place to store your books, feels like you're trying much too hard, rather than being the relaxed and comfortable in your skin gentleman that all of the other GG videos put forth as the ideal way to live.
That's a bit like saying it is phony to eat meat if you do not hunt and butcher it yourself or to eat bread if you do not grow and harvest the grain or wear clothes that you did not sew yourself. We try to show you things that you might like and can incorporate into your life. If not, that is ok. A piano makes for a nice decorative object, and we have one even though neither my wife nor I could play when we got it. But think about it, how would you ever learn to play pool or piano without having access to one? I have taken some classes and practiced and it is challenging but we also have a player, so we can listen to piano music while having dinner on a weeknight, or when we read a book or others play it at parties. There are wonderful taxidermy artists that have created stunning things, why do you have to hunt them to display them? and why can't a book shelf with your own books be decorative? We read our books and do not have nice looking leather bound books that no one reads, but they create a special atmosphere, and if that is what you like, go for it. The way interiors make you feel have a big impact on your happiness. Of course, if you are just trying to impress people, then you have a hard time at the moment as no one comes to your place anyways. But it is even better to design the space so you like it and enjoy it, and to keep an open mind
I agree. I think personal spaces should be defined by the nature and character of the person, and their life experiences. Otherwise it comes off as pretentious.
@@gentlemansgazette , I will say that I appreciate the video, but on a piano, I think it's a bit odd to have one, unless you intend to play, learn to play it, or have it play music. I don't find it gentlemanly to have a piano around "just because". It looks nice, but the connotations surrounding a piano can seem (I emphasis seem, and do not mean to accuse anyone) a bit classist.
Ultimately, people must do what they feel comfortable with, but it seems odd to just use an instrument associated with a certain economic class just to fill space, and not to actually play music to me it seems like:
1) The piano is just used to signal to others your own economic class (this may not actually be the case, but if one does not play it OR does not intend to learn, it would be a reasonable assumption for people to make)/show off
2) At a time where many do not have a lot of space to begin with, it seems a little gaudy to me, to fill in the space with an item that is never intended to be used.
Again, I say these things without any judgement, just trying to offer a different perspective as I'm sure many people with a piano (like Raphael), are quite fine, well mannered, and kind individuals. The piano, is the only thing on this list that I felt was not necessarily "gentlemanly" in spirit.

Indeed. It´s like wearing a coat of arms of a family, you don´t belong to. That´s just something, wannabes and imposters do. I always recommend to imagine Sherlock Holmes entering a room. What conclusions would he come to? How emberrassing would they be?
I like a mish-mash of 1950's styling and cyberpunk.
Taxidermy can be very classy. I have butterflies displayed in my office, people always walk right up and inspect. The amazing colours and patterns always catch people’s interests.

Even though I like Preston's, Raphael's, Kyle's style of dress. Not gonna lie, that comment gave me a chuckle.
Personally, I think the guy in the video looks and talks like an elf from Oblivion/Skyrim.
I love the Greek Revival style and as a pianist I’d be great to have a massive 9’ ebony Steinway concert grand in a dedicated music room, and a Victorian square grand in a parlor.

I've been collecting and restoring antiques and antique furniture for several decades now. I like to consider myself eclectic, but the basis of of the decor I feel comfortable with is fairly tradition, and compatible with what you suggest in this video. Additional items that come to mind would probably seem cliché, e.g 17th century maps, long case clocks and marble busts, but they still fit nicely. Most long case clocks tick only once a second so they can be a very restful presence, by the way.
I do think it's good to "kick out the jams" once in a while, maybe in a "man cave" setting. When I retired my 1940 Indian Chief from the road it became quite an interesting design element for the next several years. Let's just say, no one left the house without commenting on it.

My style runs to the 1920's. A revival of traditional decor was popular during that decade, and the furnishings were easily found and not outrages in cost. I live in a 1919 home, with much natural woodwork and original lighting fixtures. My home has the built-in book cases, as well as a built-in buffet in the dining room. On the painting area, I love seascapes and marine [ship] portraits. All my furnishings are contemporary to my home. Being a grand piano is a space gobbler, I have a vintage player upright, paper rolls and I make the music. No "stuffed" creatures or plants are present!
I’ve found AMAZING paintings, gilded frames and mirrors at thrift stores.
I’ve read your English Home Interior article multiple times and have incorporated some of those things as well as the things covered in this video into our newly purchased home. As always, thank you guys for the wealth of knowledge you bring to this community!
This is interesting, very well done and I’ve enjoyed it. However, one note about the bookshelf. If one is purchasing books to put on shelves as simply a design element of his living space, he is missing the point of what books are for. As well, he is tenuously perched on the precipice of what being a gentleman is all about. Being a gentleman has both form and substance. Eventually someone will come into the space and inquire if the books have been read. An answer in the negative will reveal the charade.
You can have both. I have over 5,000 books (mostly science fiction). The bulk are in storage shelving, but a curated (and definitely read!) group are on display in my living room.

Pianos traditionally are simply placed wherever they are to be played; lobbies, parlors, ect. You can bring your guitar or even cello to an event to play but not a piano, but even people who don't play an instrument may want to hear it sometimes and it's not bad manners to let a guest in your home to entertain others.
Agreed. All videos have great advice. The piano advice was garbage. Unless you play or are learning, or fool around with piano. Makes me look down on people like that. Show off real hobbies or collections no matter how unique or out of style. Respect on being real.

I’d say the home is the most important variable, aside from maybe the owner themselves.
I’d you have a loft in a small apartment building it’s gonna look weird to have a grand piano and curated art- but by the same token most large houses/mansions just look *weird* with post modern or minimalist looks (if you’re such a minimalist why is your house large enough to house 5 families, lol).
That’s very true. I’m getting kinda tired of the generic Hollywood Hills style home where everything is white and has no texture. I’d much rather have a more traditional style.

Thank you for the history of the design classics. Another good option for window coverings is real wood shutters. They are especially handsome in a library/game/billiards room and are available in a wide variety woods and colors.
I’ve got a chesterfield-styled wingback chair that looks almost exactly like the one at 6:04 but it’s an office chair on wheels and the color is a little more reddish, sort of closer to burgundy. It’s got real wood and genuine leather. I inherited it a few years ago, along with a solid wood Sligh desk and a little lamp from my uncle (my dad’s older sister’s second husband), who inherited it from his father. Needs a little TLC but I love it
Although taxidermy mounts may "last forever", one should avoid displaying antique specimens in an open area of the home. The process of preservation employed arsenic, which in time leaks as dust (especially around eyes and legs). A family heirloom trophy should be permanently encased in a locked glass cabinet.
I'm moving into my own place for the first time in 4 days. These tips are priceless and Preston's outfit is a total goal.

Great video. 👍I consider myself a minimalist gentleman style wise, however I can appreciate the aesthetics of the Classic design featured here. My parents in NW Pennsylvania own a turn of the century Doctors home and it naturally lends itself to this style, even today. Palms and all. I was rather surprised a Grandfather Clock was not on your list of design elements, but I think you covered all the major ones nicely.
An ornate mantle clock is a worthwhile accessory.

First off, I am a fan of your channel. As a young man and emerging professional it is difficult to find reliable sources for haberdashery and sartorial topics. I have had a passion for style since primary school, and have been a fan for some time now.
I am an architectural student and will be graduating next year. Having worked in a design firm, I believe this is one of the most accurate videos on interior design for what I call "warm" homes. I am seeing now that the "minimalist" and clean style is on its way out of popularity. Traditional is still around for a reason...

I've owned several wingback chairs over the past four decades, and I have always found them to be lacking in comfort. I now use the much more comfortable club chair option. Mine are covered in elephant grey leather, and my guests seem to gravitate to the them much more quickly than they did to the wingbacks.
on paintings, the partner and i purchase ours from a local artist and purchase along a particular theme depending on the room. the partner being a sailor, we prefer naval paintings, and find that the topic of the painting combined with the locality of the artist provides an interesting talking point and a little bit of character to the room.

However, as a gardener, I dislike artificial plants. Suggesting a "faux" palm tree is a mistake (most look cheap). Also, note that plants may not get enough light in "corners", so be sure to consider a plants' lighting needs when placing them.
By that budget people can get interior designers and staff to clean/care for plants.
Suggesting a faux houseplant is the equivalent of suggesting a clip-on tie pleather belt.
I loved this video, I found it to be quite an interesting addition to the channel, it's about style too, although in a different way. I was quite amazed that you didn't mention-or I believe so-lighting as an item (green bank lamps and chandeliers, for example), and sculpture can be a beautiful substitute for taxidermy. I hope to see more of these series!

I loved this video and believe you dress your home like you dress yourself. I’m a contemporary urban gentlemen, which is reflected in both the way I dress my home as well as I dress. I’m not a hunter and say NO to taxidermy.

Grand Piano is really only good if you have lots of space. Having a good quality modern digital in rosewood looks modern but still in keeping with the style. If you play they can be much better than an equivalent acoustic, but also it sets a tone that is space efficient and isn't pretentious.

Loved the video, I work at an Auction House and when I need to I go all out with the 3 piece suits and colour :) we see all the beautiful furniture from the Victorian Era and Georgian Era and like you say, you can get amazing things for brilliant prices. Love the videos, keep on moving 😊

I recommend tapestry, especially for those who don't like the idea of carpets collecting too much dust (allergies). Other thing adding flair to a room are a built in cocktail bar (maybe globe sized) a globe, a chandellier and the indirect lighting of a floor lamp.

Good overview on some traditional styles. Just make sure to actually use the piano and care for it. Otherwise you ruin a perfectly fine instrument and there's nothing gentlemanly about that.

Putting pianos in bay windows is a bad idea, damages the instrument and the finish.
As an interior designer I would say that you are right about the traditional style. However you are wrong about rugs- not well kept machine woven rugs will be cheep especially if made with synthetic materials . 100 knots per square inch in a well kept hand loomed rugs appreciate over time and start at $10,000 new and up -I worked for a retail of handmade rugs in sizes 10'X15' and I am a proud connoisseur of rugs . Also taxidermy does not keep indefinitely . The feathers and fur do get spotty if attacked by beetles and time.
Yeah, he doesn't know anything about rugs. Or pianos. Or pool tables. Or taxidermy. He makes the same sorts of mistakes about all four. Worse with pianos and rugs.

I propose you to make a video about the style of the royalty and aristocrats. Maybe about what can we learn from them or something like that. They always have the perfect style in different occasions (like weddings and funerals that are often under the public eye).

I think it's rather a mistake to completely ignore midcentury modern design. A wingback chair or large chesterfield is fine if you have a Craftsman house like that (it is very nicely appointed! I'm a big fan of Arts & Crafts style houses!), but would overwhelm smaller spaces. MCM accent chairs and dining room furniture fits better into the smaller houses and apartments that most urban people are living in these days. Though you may not consider the aesthetic "traditional" in the sense that some stuffy old Scottish people didn't have it in their 19th century hunting estates, Scandinavian midcentury modern design has been around long enough to be a part of classic design vernacular for decades now. We are now discussing matters of taste though, so I recognize that not everybody will agree.
I believe Preston said he would cover "classic" mid century modern in an upcoming video. He also commented that the style highlighted in this budget often requires a large space.
It’s definitely taste. I personally, repeat, PERSONALLY, really hate Mid-Century Modern. I’m all about Art Deco of the 1920’s and 1930’s.
