00:00 Modern Interior Design Classics Introduction
The modern style of interior design was a hallmark of the mid-20th century and it still remains quite popular today. With its emphasis on clean lines, functional materials, and practicality, it can represent the apex of both comfort and beauty, and it’s incredibly appropriate for gentlemanly spaces.
01:16 The History of Modern Interior Design
decorating your space in the modern style doesn’t mean appointing it like the headquarters of a James Bond villain or like the Brady Bunch home. There are a number of more subtle modern design touches that can be effortlessly implemented in a gentleman’s home, but at the same time, we do recognize that the modern style can be polarizing.
So, whether you want to go full Mad Men with your interior design or just add a few modern touches, we think that there’s a lot to love in this versatile style.
05:01 Characteristics of The Modern Style
The modern style actually encompasses several different sub-genres of design, but through all of them, there are a certain amount of fundamental principles.
Modern Design Pieces for Gentlemen:
06:20 1. Barcelona Chair
07:58 2. Eames Lounge Chair
09:53 3. Knoll Sofa
11:31 4. Pop-up Bar
12:55 5. Bar Cart
14:11 6. Arco Floor Lamp
15:40 7. Houseplants
If you do choose to use house plants in this way, the modern style favors deep, rich greens rather than excessively vibrant colors. So, we’d suggest using leafy plants rather than flowering ones. As such, here are a few suggestions.
** Fiddle-leaf Fig Tree or Ficus lyrata
** African spear plant or Sansevieria Cylindrica
** Split-leaf Philodendron or Monstera Deliciosa
** Creeping Fig or Ficus Pumila Variegata
** ZZ Plant or Zamioculcas Zamiifolia

21:39 Buying Modern Interior Design Pieces
We should note here that famous modern art pieces purchased new tend to have relatively steep price tags anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000. So, you should keep this in mind and decide whether this is truly the right decision for you.
Famous pieces of modern furniture can be somewhat expensive secondhand due to their popularity, and, of course, you should also keep an eye out for forgeries. Helpfully though, there are guides available online that can help you to discern a fake from an original.
Guides available for free online will show you how to discern an original from a fake:

We hope we’ve given you some good ideas on creating and constructing a space that works well for you. As Charles Eames, himself, put it: “The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” And after all, who visits your own home more than you do.

Bless this channel for always striving to pronounce non-English names correctly.
Definitely appreciate the effort, however "Mies" is pronounced with a long "i" and the "e" is silent and "Knoll" has a strong "K". Enjoyed the insights nevertheless - great work.
Yeah, not in all cases... I did not understand the pronounciation of the Finnish designers Eero Saarinen and Eero Aarnio at all, but I knew the chairs so...
tis quite gentlemanly
this man seems like he's never said "dude" in his entire life
Now I really want to hear him say "dude" or "bro"
he sounds like a woman
@@madstevens8961 No, he sounds like a classy person
How about "homie "?lol
He is ascended
I just love seeing how far this channel has come and also how large the community has grown
One of the best museums I've ever been to was the Poltrona Frau museum in Italy. You could see history through changing furniture design, it was so fascinating!
I'm one of those who think that modernism definitely did humanity a favor. One of the things I like most about Mid-Century Modern is that it's a reflection of the philosophy of the time: the preference for practicality and functionality without losing sight of an elegant and light aesthetic that undoubtedly adapted much better to the lifestyle of twentieth century society. It's still a very current style. I have an Arco lamp from Barcelona Designs and I'm in love with its features. Great video!
When we talk about the modern interior, we should not forget Mr Ingvar Kamprad and his company, IKEA. It made many modern interior items accessible to large masses.
Yes, but unfortunately Ikea is becoming more and more "mainstream", apparently to sell to the broader market.
I've also noticed that less and less of their once incredibly made products, have been cheapened up and are now being manufactured more in Asian countries and not Sweden, like they were to begin with.
@@slicksnewonenowActually Russia
IKEA?!? Maybe Design Within Reach. I will say when IKEA first opened. they had better designs and better quality.
So cool to see the channel branching out into these adjacency topics.... Love it!!!
It’s hard to go wrong with mid mod and Scandinavian… functional, comfortable, clean. The Eames chairs and Noguchi table will always look nice.
God, non sponsored content is so refreshing.
Awesome video, these are absolute classics. Barcelona Chair and Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman are my favorites.
24:13 it’s sponsored by their clothing accessory store. Not sure how people don’t seem to understand that concept. It’s just less obnoxious.
@@toonsoffun5733 The company is producing their own content and integrrates plugs to their products. They are not sponsored by third parties that have nothing to do with content (Skillshare, Harry's Razors, box subscriptions etc).
I really love your videos and appreciate the time, effort and research needed to put these together. As for the humor, outtakes etc continue with it. It makes this channel unique and entertaining. Kudos to these young men.
Nothing beats the chesterfield sofa.
Great video.
ehh, leather furniture just feels icky to me
Awesome!!! 👏🏻 I watch your channel just to see nice things, to educate myself and to relax and It always works!!! To see people talking about style, about beauty in lots of forms feeds one's soul! Even if I can't really use all your dressing information, being a woman, still makes me feel good watching you!!! Thank you!

eames lounge chair and ottoman is a fine piece I want in my future house!
Now you're talking! This is my jam. Love you guys! Now do a video on Mod. Fred Perry, Baracuta Harrington, Bass Weejuns, knit polos, Sta-Prest trousers, three-button suits cut just past the waist w/ narrow lapels, ticket pocket, side vents, usually in interesting colors or patterns.
Mid Century. What was once old is chic again. Love the minimalism.
One of my new favourite videos. Thank you, Gentleman’s Gazette
Best MCM video I’ve seen
This guy is so proper, his collers are tucked inthe sweater.
what about: Arne Jacobsen "The EGG" (60s) and Gerrit Rietveld Red Blue and Yellow chair (10th) Charles Rennie Mackintosh the the Hillhouse Chair (10th) le Corbusier LC 4, (20s) Eilin Grey Round table (20s), all of which, are must have's in modern interior design, very eye catching, as stand alone, just like Charles Eames, and Mies van der Rohe
I have the Le Corbusier chaise lounge, Le Corbusier two-seater couch. Barcelona chair with Ottoman, Marcel Bruer Wassily chair, and an Eileen Gray end table.
Really was waiting for you guys to make one of these!! Thank you!
I'd love to have an eames lounger. I love the way they look
What attracts me the most is the modern lightning furniture and perfectly placed liquor bottle
Pop up bar, cool 👍
Very nice! My wife and I are planning on doing some decorating very soon in this similar style! We really like Fraser and Mad Men so it rubs off.
This episode gives me much knowledge about designer furniture. Thanks
I m a fan of victorian interior design
I don’t want a sports car but one day I would love to have an Eames lounge chair.
"Modern"/MCM/etc is my absolute favorite style! Lately we've also been really digging "Japandi" style
That ZZ Top cut was he coolest thing I've ever seen haha
I prefer the classics
I dig what you do dude very nice delivery
This is the first time I stumble upon this channel, and I’m in love, literally. I need more of this in my life and i need Preston in my life, i need that man to be my man 🥰
I always enjoy the humor in the videos
More content like this please! Amazing video you guys!
Thank you, Preston! You gave me interesting advice for new apartment
I am a little disappointed you did a whole video on modern design, and not even mentioning Danish design, it was huge during that era, and a lot of high-quality timeless pieces came from it.
Agreed, Danish Modern was huge at the time, I remember seeing some of it as a hold-over when I was in primary school in the late seventies.
What a great video. It’s was informative, well presented and hilarious. Do more like this.
Some great pieces of furniture there (have to get a 'Mad Men style pop up bar for my office now), always enjoy Preston's work.
Very helpful
, thank you.
Planning on redoing my room soon in a mid century modern style
I'd love an eames lounge chair for my office
Do a video on the gilded age. Some of us like the "cluttered, over the top, dust collecting, eclecticism".
Great primer on modern design. I'm a huge fan of Eames, Nelson and Noguchi.
Great video...great tips and ideas here...also Preston's burnt orange sweater looks very nice...
What a great and interesting and shall I say, aesthetically pleasing video!
Great video and more of this type please!
Well, this is different! Enjoyed this! :)
I love our host's Down in the Park look.
Awesome video and tips! Thank you! 🙂
This was like a video description of my home (though I have a lot of art on my walls). Great stuff.
Thank you . Lovely. Can you please do a video on the history of the lamp on your bar cart . Thank you . I have a few of the lamps .
Nice looks
Very informative!
I do prefer the styles in the earlier video however.
Great video. Now I’ll pay closer attention to the modern furniture section at MoMA in NYC.
Congratulations, execelent !
Great vid. Thank you.
Wonderful presentation.
Perfect timing. I sub'd. I'm in the beginning process of completely changing my apartment furniture..look & style.
Actually, the sooner the better. I appreciate the style & decor advice.
Excellent review
Stick with timeless classics. You can't go wrong. Design Within Reach is a great source.
4:53 - Definitely have NEVER heard the 1980's described with the word "minimalism" before that's for sure!!
Great video
That grass portion was the great 😂
A half full bottle of whiskey in my bottom right desk drawer is my pop-up bar.
Awesome video, can you please list out all the reference movies that you mentioned in the video. I really want to watch them all. Thanks alot
Amazing video
3:25 "Pierce Patchet?" Love that movie.
Pronunciation like a pro. 🎩
I own two Knoll Barcelona chairs.. a Herman Miller Eames Lounge chair, two office managers chairs, and many other mid-century modern pieces..
Learn from the master, Frasier Crane
No one mentiones marty's "barkalonger"!
I own the Herman Miller Eames chair! Absolutely wonderful! Got the vegan leather version.
The Herman Miller licensed Eames Chair and ottoman is nearly $7000 USD now.
Thanks & good job. Can you do a video on bigger items like housing and cars? How does one find & buy classic housing and transportation? 🤔😕😛
Modern now is vintage but seems suitable for the clean modern cut suit. The style that seems more fitting for GG more 30-50's style would seem to be more a 50s vintage. Well done video, a ton of history and sources. Every girl's crazy about a sharp dressed Preston.
This is my style. Although I didn't hear the words Art Deco once. In my house, I have:
Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge
Le Corbusier two-seater couch
Marcel Bruer Wassily chair
Barcelona chair with Ottoman
Yes I like the Eames lounge chair...
Or a similar design with easy to clean leather.
But you only want 1 because a standard sofa or couch is better for reclining, and can seat 3 if needed.
It would be nice if the footstool had adjustable height.
I like somewhat masculine decor.
Luxury Decor gives me the stressed feeling of:
"Gee, I hope I don't break something."
As for me, Scandinavian modernist designs are the more elegant due to it's more warm, human-like appearance and shapes
in contrast the cold European tube-syndrome (probably triggered some gentlemen) designs.
One of my favorite designers like Alvar Aalto and Hans Wegner, especially Wegner, treat wood with enormous respect
and let it show it's great qualities, what I really admire. Aalto, as a good example, has made beautiful shapes but also used always
birch wood as it grows like mushrooms out of the ground in Scandinavia, which is more cost-effective but also much eco-friendlier
then the expensive (and often endangered) exotic woods and steel used in works of the typical European cannon.
Yes, I like wood more then metal but still have respect for the (social-minded) mid- and post war European modernist
way of thinking and aesthetics.
Ater all you've done a great job, as always, and mentioning the top icons is totally fine and not a mistake for sure, but still,
it would be just a bit more professional to mention also the more 'unknown' (or at least overlooked by the majority) design pieces.
Once more, great respect for you and your efforts and keep the gentleman subjects coming!
You've got to love Aalto. The iconic Aalto vase is a staple of decoration in many homes here in Finland.
@@harjad9546 Oh yes, a masterpiece! I really love the Savoy, both of them, the wooden mold and the iron one.
Very nice
21:33 The Big Book of British Smiles
Terrific
You should do a video on interior design for the office
I have no regrets about the re-production Eames I bought a while back. The finish and construction are very good as is the quality of the materials. That said good reproductions still run a few thousand dollars.
Best of luck to 100k 😁😁
Good informative video, learned a few things 👍, but I'm just a Indian blanket, bear rug kinda guy.
Where can someone find thats pop up bar cabinet? That looks amazing!
Good video. Nice intro for those not too familiar with design (which I'm betting is most guys).
One pet peeve, though. The bar cart with the lamp (13:06) has the lamp's power cord just hanging out in space, flapping in the breeze. Not a good look. (in the computer/electronics/gadget age it's unfortunately quite common.) It doesn't take much effort to run the cord down the leg of the cart and make it much less visible.
I was very surprised that none of the plant recommendations are available in the Gentleman's Shoppe at Fort Belvedere "available here" next to the boutonnieres!
Was the Sullivan designed building that you showed the Guaranty Trust building in Buffalo NY?
Brilliant presentation. I just wish there was a recommendation for a home office chair ( Herman Miller perhaps?) and desk (?).
Aeron.
You're a brilliant person, Preston, and, an influence on my own style choices. But, please, note that the English word "often" contains a silent "t". We shouldn't say Off-Ten as often/"offen" any more than we would say sof-ten as the English word soften/"soffen".
Always a gent.
While I'm not a fan of Modern styling generally, I am all on board for more houseplants. 😁 Pothos, aka "devil's ivy," is another great low-maintenance plant that trails attractively. I also like the "UFO plant," which has a unique leaf shape very appropriate to the mid century modern aesthetic.
Nice video Kermit.
Seeing Pat Batemans apartment so many times made me remember that I needed to return some videotapes.
Don’t laugh. Eventually it becomes a felony.
A question, I already own an Eames lounge chair and watching your video, I was thinking to pair it with a Barcelona chair. Would that be a good idea? Thank you
When I was a young man I used to have 2. Just like in american psycho.
They looked cool and were good for playing guitar but were not very comfortable.
Maybe go to a shop and try one out.
Also would a 2 seater not be better with a lounge chair.
I would love living in the home of a James Bond villain
OUTTAKES I much prefer at the END rather than in situ.
Eames made their lounger resemble a baseball players mitt. Soft leather that you sink into like a baseball fits in the netting of a mitt
I would have preferred Raphael. To me, he is the Gentleman‘s Gazette and what I expected
Interior design is cool and all but quality furniture is very expensive and if you get bored with a certain piece you can't just lock it up in a closet so it is best to stick to the classics. My favourite is 17th/18th century design .
I love Ming Dynasty furniture. They are ornate, yet very minimalist and modern looking.
AGREED! Neolithic Period furniture is By Farrrr my GO-To Faves. Classic, Timeless, Totally Unique in this day n age, & talk about Function OVER Form....wooF!
@@DiZzAstA Poor sarcasm. Not very funny. Aldo, if you are serious, go for it. Neolithic chic is the new postmodernism.
@@DiZzAstA Depends on the culture. I love the jars of Neolithic Jomon people in Japan, which are the first potteries in the history of mankind. But, if we are going to the ancient route, I think Bronze age China is still the best
What kind of 17th/18th century design, specifically? There's some variety in that range, from baroque to rococo and classicism (and of course the regular furniture normal people actually had). But mostly you find that in late 19th century or 20th century, factory-made revivalist versions, which can be a very different deal. I've found that sticking to more modern (namely jugendstil and functionalism) styles is much more practical, since there's actually stuff available for us non-millionaires who can't afford traveling after Christie's and Sotheby's.
