Greg you lucky bugger. You better appreciate Katie. I did a lot of what you are doing over the past 60 years but I never had a wife who would help the way Katie does. Congrats on the new purchase.

@@andrewsimckes5748 just a thought. Maybe a lot of these ideas are Katie 's. She does seem to be the main leader of the couple. Good for her.

My ex wife was the same way.. would never help with anything on the property or even so much as come out an hand me tools when working on something. But yet when a friend would come over with something for me to fix or weld she would make coffee snakes an bring them out to the shop. Make it look like she was a great partner. Yet by my self never bring a thing out or even come into shop. A fake.

Of all the homestead/build channels I watch, there are three that stand heads and shoulders above all others. Your channel I can truly say, you two are totally amazing. The refreshing part is you both know what you are doing, and that is, you know how to build the right way and not just blowing smoke. You are at the top of my list to watch.

Yeah, I have watched a good number of off-grid channels and have only subscribed to two (this channel being one if I'm not being clear). Both of the channels I'm subscribed to are very different, and I'm happy when a video drops on either - but happiest when this channel drops a video 😀

Greg and Katie. Love watching your channel from Northern Ontario. Love the can do attitude and just plain hard work without any religious crap that so many UA-cam off grid channels ascribe too. Life is what you make of it with all the ups and downs but when two people like you set your mind to it life is a rewarding journey. May your journey find you all that you want from it.

If you build a workshop in the new area why not move your sawmill to the spot where the old sawmill is? It would be covered and the setup may work for you on placing the logs on the mill.

Congratulations on the new land! An old timer told me years ago to ALWAYS buy your neighbors land when they sell whether you need/want it at the time. You will never regret expanding the size of your land. Owned my land for 18 years and no one has sold yet. 😆Regarding that old junky trailer...dont trash the entire thing! Just demo the top and keep the base frame and then deck it with some 2" thick timbers and now you have a good flatbed utility trailer.

Good morning Katie and Greg! This is very exciting and I am so happy for you two. I smiled watching the goats in their new area and saw how happy they appeared. That property is absolutely ideal for your set up and I look forward to watching you plan and develop the area. The drone footage really helped me get a feel for the layout of your property. Until now I didn't really have a good feel for it so that really helped. Katie, among other things, you are quite skilled at flying that drone as well as your efforts and talent at vid editiing. As a fellow member of the @ 12% of left-handed people, I'm sure that is why you are so good at it. 😉 Have a producting and safe week ahead, take care. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

In the 1980’s My Dad fabricated a sawmill almost identical to the one on your new property. He had some pieces but he made the carriage and put the cable drive together and ran the mill from a tractor pto driving automobile tires that pressed together to engage the mill. What a piece of history!

Just a thought! Strip the unwanted travel trailer down to the frame, junk the old materials. Then, using the lumber you just removed from the privacy fence, built a chicken coop on the old trailer frame. You may want to put new wheels and tires on the new portable coop, or at least tires. One side of coop could have a large swing out access panel for easy clean outs. Put a people door on one end of coop. Install a window so chickens get sun in winter. Could use tractor to move coop around the homestead.

My Grandpa and his brothers and their uncles used to run old sawmills like the one you have there, in fact one of his brothers was still using his in the early 90s. Those old sawmills were a very important part of the building of America in the old days.

  • @carlnelson7358
    @carlnelson7358 9 місяців тому

Instead of getting rid of that old trailer, completely tear it down to the frame, and throw some new tires on it. Then mill some lumber and make a flatbed trailer out of it. I did that once with one of my old campers. Also, congrats on the new land. Been watching you 2 for a couple of years now.

Your neighbour was the same one who helped with pigs? Had the tractor/plow pulling you out?
It's going to be a lot of work, but it could be something worth doing.
I tend to agree with the "chicken tractor" because the others I have seen have a kind of coop over top.
That gives the chickens some protection and places to roost overnight.
The structure definitely should become a good workshop later.

Best thing you can do to protect your existing property is extend the buffer around it by buying more property. If you have the money or if you can get the money and the terms aren’t to your disadvantage, do it. We started with 30 acres. Now we have 81. The quality of the land has so improved because of what space allows you to do and control. Congratulations to you both.

Rather than trashing the one trailer, gut it, replace the flooring (if needed), take off the tires and put it on blocks to keep off the ground, and convert it into a coop. It's already insulated, might need some more along with some covering over areas that get exposed when gutting it out (meaning cabinets, etc), it has windows, exhaust points for letting fresh air in and old air out, can (likely) use some of the gutted materials to make egg boxes, etc. Good protection against predators since it's metal, will save tons of time, money and materials since the shell is already made. Anyhow - rather then put it in a landfill repurposing it would be better. Doesn't have to be chickens, it could be any animal, or even as a grow room to start your gardening efforts inside a structure during the last days of winter so you can get more plating time in ground sooner. Just a few thoughts. Congrats on the new purchase, I enjoy watching your progress.

Sure is prety country. However in my old age I dont tolerate cold. When I was your age we lived in upstate NY in the snow belt. It would start snowing the middle to end of October & you wouldn't see the ground until June. I even took a picture of a snow storm we had in June. In the dead of winter, we seldom saw temps above the low negatives. We would get minus 20 to minus 40. That was before they started giving temps with wind chill. Wishing you folks all the best. Love the videos & thanks for allowing us to come along on your journey. I'll stay in the sunny southwest, thank you. LOL

That is great news, you talked about additional acreage, and this is so perfect. It is level with you current property, so it is definitely melds right into it. It is very open, but trees surrounding it. Would it be open enough you could relocate your solar panels, being closer it would help with the voltage drop.
