That customer was unreasonable. I received something that was broken. I was more than happy to send whatever pictures the seller needed so that she could successfully complete the claim. I even held onto the box and broken item in case the seller needed additional info.

They got very lucky that it wasn't through eBay , they send an email to the buyer that has to confirm it was broken to get the refund going. If not you have to go through hoops to get it approved.

I agree with expensive items going with Pirate Ship!! I had a vintage 4' tall ceramic christmas tree that sold for $750.00. Was shipped in 3 different boxes, used 2 large rolls of bubble wrap. The main piece of the tree arrived broken. It was well wrapped and boxed. The photos the customer sent showed a hole in the box where something poked into it. That was exactly where it was broken. Pirate ship was wonderful, they represented me with UPS. I had my money back in 3 days. Now, anything that requires extra insurance I ship with Pirate Ship.

Thanks for sharing your good experience with Pirate Ship insurance. I've used their insurance many times (reselling and also to send things to my airman son stationed overseas) and haven't had to file a claim yet but have always wondered if it's easier than with USPS or UPS. Good to know they represent the buyer and expedite the claim.

@@rachelh5211 it was so easy…I just initiated a chat with pirate ship on my phone. The information they requested I did a screen shot with my phone and attached to the chat and that was it. This! Pirate Ship uses Shipcover insurance, which has very good rates and amazing turn around times. I filed claims with them multiple times for a variety of different valued items, and they never once refused or questioned any of my claims. The rates are also a hell of a lot better, they're so good that I even insure First Class items between $50-$100 now because it's only $0.80 to insure them! Yeah I know that $60 shirt isn't going to "break" in transit, but now if it gets lost I'm covered haha.

This is from the reverse perspective as a customer, I bought a Tibetan mask and eagerly awaited the arrival. It came smashed to bits, and was obviously poorly packed. I took a TON of photos, and kept the wrapping for the seller. Eventually, he refunded, but it turned out that he had sent the expensive item without insurance. From a human perspective, I feel sypmpathetic that he was out the money, and I was very sad that I was unable to have the item. He spent plenty of time blaming his wife for the packing and shipping, but I thought he should have done some oversight for an expensive item.

Wow! What a nightmare! I’m so happy everything turned out well.
My shipping story was from a few years ago. I acquired a vintage pedal car/ fire truck and I had listed on eBay for $750. It was a little beat up, but was in one piece and worked. However, because of its size and weight and fragility, I had it listed for local pickup only. I had a customer in TX whose business was buying real cars, refurbishing them and selling them for profit. He was interested in this item for his adult son who actually had one of these when he was little. He wanted to refurbish it and give it to him for his birthday. So, I researched different shipping options, different companies, etc, and just couldn’t find anything reasonable that would insure it adequately. So, I declined the sale. He wanted it so badly that he arranged and paid for men he works with here in CA who deliver cars to him for his business, to come pick it up and drive it to him in Texas. I agreed, and the sale was made. I cushioned every fragile piece with bubble wrap, and wrapped the whole thing with an entire cylinder of plastic shipping wrap. His men came to my house about 3 days later and picked it up, wrapping it in 3-4 moving blankets and off they went. About a month later, he sent me a picture of the refurbished piece, and it was BEAUTIFUL! This guy was the real deal, and definitely knew what he was doing! I looked for the picture, but can’t find it! If I do, I’ll share it with you. It’s one of my favorite stories of doing this business!

Been a UPS employee for 5 years, I can confirm a lot of us throw around smaller packages without any care for what's inside. It's harder to do with larger, heavier boxes like the one you described, but it still happens. It's mostly because we're tasked with getting as much volume out as humanly possible and are chastised for not reaching the highest numbers. Most employees don't care about the items, only about not getting yelled at for going too slow. If you have valuable items like this and if you're not willing to pay the high insurance costs, DO NOT ship through UPS. There's a high chance it will get broken.

@LegoLover I agree with you. When I had a p/t gig @ FedEx the exact same thing happened all the time. Management was just concerned about their numbers and productivity. Most of the employees didn't give a crap how the packages got on the trucks and if something didn't fit...STOMP ON IT and make it fit. When the conveyor belts got too busy and backed up it was an acceptable practice to shove packages onto the ground whether it was a Serta mattress, car rims, a treadmill or a Weber BBQ grill. They did not care b/c it would just get written off as 'Damaged'

Most expensive item that Ive sold on eBay was for $4,950 with a $50 shipping fee. Item came with the original box and that made it easier to ship. I found this item locally for $15 and It took me about 4 months to sell it. I did choose to ship with ups cause they covered the most in insurance. I used the $50 plus an extra $50 out of my pocket to cover the insurance. Item measured about 12x10x5 inches (so it wasn't a large item). Heres how I shipped it: first, I found a box that was slightly larger and loaded it with large bubble wrap and placed the item within its original box inside and taped up the box. I then found another box that was larger than the last box and added bubble wrap to all for sides into that box and put the other box inside this box and taped it up. Lastly, I found a third box that was larger than the last box and added large bubble wrap to all 4 sides and I put the box inside this one and taped up the box and added tape to corners. So, I basically shipped the item within a box, a box, a box within another box. Each box had layers of bubble wrap for cushion. Item was delivered and its been about 7-8 months now.

Only issue is if it did break during shipping UPS would claim you did not package it well enough and deny any claim. So best way to cover yourself is have them pack and ship so they take full blame. She is very lucky UPS did not deny her because the buyer was being a jerk about it.

I listed them as such and ended up selling for full asking price and being that they were larger speakers and due to how much they sold for, it took me about 1hr to package them. I shipped via UPS ground, unfortunately the package never made it to the receiver. I luckily added insurance via ebay and went through all the motions of opening a claim and my case was resolved rather quickly. I refunded the buyer and UPS refunded me, it all took about a week. As far as adding insurance, the $250 threshold is a good idea, I like it. 🙂

It’s always sad when beautiful art ends up being lost, but if she got it back broken, maybe she could just treat it like a puzzle and glue it all back together? 😂 haha!! Personal use only, obvs.
I think that while this was different content from normal, it’s important to know and very useful for your viewers, so thanks for sharing.

Sometimes the buyer just doesn’t know what to do, and they often throw away the box and wrapping before they talk to you. For expensive items it is a good idea to put a note with the item telling them to take pictures and hang on to all the wrapping. UPS requires 7 or 8 pictures for a claim.

I really enjoyed this. I sold a rare 1962 Gibson Les Paul amp for 1500 plus shipping. Thankfully I charged 250 and brought it to my local shipping store that ships ups USPS Fed ex etc. They double boxed it and individually wrapped all the tubes and components. Thankfully, the owner's husband was a big fan of old amps and he told her he was jealous so she took great care of me. The boxes and packaging was 150 and the shipping was around 100 because it was ground and only had to go 250 miles. I insured it fully and it arrived 3 days later and the customer was thrilled! I. Going back there next time I need to ship something large.

As a 25 year employee of ups, I'd like to apologize for whomever broke it. Most of us don't throw things, and treat packages with care. Sometimes things happen. Insurance on something that expensive is a must. But I'd investigate that buyer. May not be our fault.

agreed Ive had nothing but good experiences shipping UPS, but these are all items I have packed myself knowing what they have to survive through. If UPS is truly at fault I would be blaming it on whoever did the packing not the delivery drivers. That buyer was sus tho, but I'm guessing he was just a grumpy ebay buyer happens quite often with buyers on ebay.

When dealing with eBay sellers, I usually asked them to NOT use UPS as a shipping service, but to use USPS Global Priority shipping instead because, aside from receiving cracked, damaged speakers thanks to incompetent UPS shipping, UPS used to charge brokerage fees IN ADDITION TO the shipping charges and those fees would only occur when the UPS guy was at my doorstep. Eventually, there was a successful class action lawsuit filed against UPS and I was refunded about $240 in the end which covered the brokerage fees I had paid.
So, I'm not a fan of those UPS "brown shirts", not that they're all incompetent or crooked, but I prefer other shipping services.

One thing everyone should know about UPS insurance. Since UPS stores are franchises (not corporate owned) the insurance they offer is a third party independent company. So it is something they pay for monthly if a claim is filed or not. So they are more likely to pay out but could also mean to care less about your items. The reason FedEx sets a limit because they are not a franchise or insurance company and are more strict paying claims. They want receipts of value and photos are required. All payouts are made by corporate not individual stores.

I've shipped some expensive items and some fragile items, but never an expensive fragile item. The only thing I've shipped that I was really worried about was a Breakfast at Tiffany's music box/snow globe. It wasn't really expensive ($50-60). The buyer wrote to make sure it was properly packed because the last snow globe she bought had arrived broken. I put the globe inside a zipper bag, just in case, wrapped it in a couple layers of bubble wrap, then put it in a box, cushioning it with air pillows and pieces of foam. Then, put the box inside a larger box with more air pillows. I may have gone a little overboard, but it arrived safely and the buyer mentioned the good packing in her feedback.

My worst damage experience was with a $500 collectible photo I sold on ebay to a sports collectible dealer in Chicago. It was at least 16x20, framed behind glass. I packed it to be bulletproof, with stiff board making sure nothing could get to the glass, then lots of bubble wrap, then a double-walled box. Then I treated the double-walled box as if it were a piece of glass, and packed it with closed-cell foam inside another double-walled box.
I was still super nervous, because the shipping address was in Chicago, and the business name included the phrase Sports Collectibles. Just super likely to be stolen by any UPS employee looking to steal something, especially with it being insured for $500, adult signature required, etc.
Sure as anything, it went missing for an extra week. Then UPS located it, said it was broken, and they blamed me for shipping something containing glass. They refused to pay. I told them to return it to me, broken or not. They did so, but then changed their mind and said because the box was damaged and there was broken glass, it was too dangerous for them to handle, so they had to destroy it.
Likely story. They wouldn't even refund the shipping cost or the insurance I'd paid and they didn't honor.
I have a commercial UPS account, and paid through the nose for daily UPS pickup at my house.
None of that mattered,. They blamed me, wouldn't pay the claim, wouldn't deliver it to my customer, and wouldn't return it to me. All despite the fact that I am POSITIVE that the only way it could get damaged is if they opened it while considering stealing it. They also refused to send me any photos of the damaged package, broken glass, or what remained of the item. So it probably was stolen rather than damaged.
    Total BS.
I'm sure glad they didn't damage or lose the $13,000 telescope I shipped via UPS fully insured, before that. Thankfully it was just addressed to a person, not to a business. I think inside jobs stealing packages target things going to businesses, especially if the business is known for handling high-dollar items. I don't think I'd ship even a $100 golf club to an address like Peoria Platinum Pipe, Inc.; Sacramento Rare Gold Coins LLC, or Priceless Yankees Collectibles of Boca Raton.
The only shipping method you can totally trust is USPS Registered Mail, insured or not. But before they accept a package for that, you have to have it packaged exceedingly well and sealed perfectly in a way that can't be tampered with.

Funny story!!! I bought a statue from Gamestop it was a little over $200 and it was gonna be shipped to my house. A few days go by and I was just curious about the item so I looked it up and found a lot of complaints on the head of the statue would break off during shipping. So I went into my local Gamestop and asked the manager "which he is a really cool guy" about that issue and sadly they wouldn't replace the statue of it was broken, but I could get a refund. He said because of the amount that was broken during shipping Gamestop decided not to deal with that manufacturer and just offered a full refund. So the best part about this story is when my statue arrived it was in one piece!!! I was one of the few luckiest people to have a perfect statue of Moxxi from Borderlands!!

Fragile items, especially large statues, are always high risk of breaking. Sometimes it's something little, like a single piece snapping off that can be glued, and other times the box will arrive looking like it had been kicked in by an angry lunatic brandishing steel-toe boots. That's why insurance is great! If the postal service ruins your item, they're the ones who pay for it. I've had quite a few broken-item shipping stories, both as a seller and buyer.
As a buyer, I've had two cases where figures I bought arrived partially broken. This damage was easily repairable with the right figurine glues, and I had the means to repair them. I filed the claims as the buyer, and got my full payment back in one case (like $250) and a max payment back on another ($100 total, buyer didn't pay for extra insurance but I was fine with that. Was literally a tiny break). In the end, I got to keep my items, and got some or all of my money back. All without having to trouble the seller, just the postal service.
As a seller, I've had a few cases of items arriving with minor or major damage over the years. Sometimes it works out great, the buyer requests a return and I allow them to send it back to me. I refund them, then get a insurance refund for the item (so essentially I still made the sale, I'm just out the return shipping). I then repair the item, and sell it again! I'll end up making more money in the long run. I had one case where a very fragile and expensive ceramic church arrived just absolutely destroyed, breaks and chips all over the thing. The outer box was absolutely destroyed with a hole that looked like it got stabbed in by a pallet jack. Even though this was obviously the fault of the postal service, the buyer was very unreasonable and aggressive. But in the end, they returned the item, I got the $350 back from insurance, and I glued it up and relisted it for a little less and sold it again!
In this case, the seller in this video should have shipped it herself and used Shipcover insurance with either FedEx or UPS (whichever has lower rates for the package size and rate). Shipcover covers up to a max of $5000, it literally only costs $32 to insure an item with a value of $4000. This can be purchased easily using Pirate Ship. They also have a much easier and quicker claims process and I've never once had them deny or even question one of my claims (probably around 6-7 total so far). Doing insurance directly with a store location is inviting trouble and horrible turn around times for claims. The buyer was a absolute jerk for refusing to send images of the box, but never in any circumstance should you refund a buyer before they comply with what you need for a claim. You're protected by eBay, if the buyer escalates the situation unjustifiably or refuses to communicate with you eBay will side with you so long as you're professional and did everything correctly. Just spell it out for them simply:
1: Send me clear images of the damage, outer packaging, inner packaging, etc. I will file the insurance claim then fully refund you once it finalizes. You will get to keep the damaged item.
2: Send me the same images, and go ahead and return it to me at my expense. You will be fully refunded once the item arrives back in my possession.
That's it. I'm not playing around with partial refunds, and I'm not settling for any less than every picture I asked for. If the buyer is angry, take it up with the postal service, I don't have control over whatever idiot destroyed your package on it's hundreds of miles journey.
Also the amount she paid to ship this item was ridiculous. I have experience shipping statues that size, as well as purchasing shipping on statues that size, it should AT MOST have cost $160-$180. Maybe I'm underestimating the site of the piece, but still.

  • @sstobbe1817
    @sstobbe1817 2 роки тому

My fear with ensured shipping is, that you pay extra, but when time comes they won't pay anything. That's the basics of insurance: make people pay for the service and try not to pay out when they come asking for that.
I'm not sure if it has changed over the last few years, but in when I used the service, they wanted invoices and only paid back what you paid for it. That works when you resell goods you buy from distributors and such, but not when you buy used goods in lots (or even when not in lots), as you most of the time won't get a proof of purchase. Even then, if you look at the amount of time it costs to get money back from the insurance, you have to figure out from what amount you do that and up to what amount you take it out of your earnings. You can, for example, put a percentage aside from every dollar you make (10% from your net profit, for example). Put that in a separate bank account and don't touch it. After a while, you will know if that percentage is enough or not.
The amount from what you will insure the package also might vary from when you begin with reselling (and maybe have very limited funds) and change with time.
If you buy something for under $5 and selling that for $25 up to $50, you might decide to take that risk. If you paid $25 for the item and selling it for $100, you might take the insurance.
Pick a number from what you want to insure the package to start with. The number where I start to think about insurance is $100 and up. Depending on what it is and how it's sold (as e-bay can give money back to buyers and other ways of selling might not have that option that simple).
I agree with people that say, "I would drive an hour or two to deliver that item or meet in the middle". After payment, that is. Especially with those amounts of money, you don't want to walk around with it, because someone knows you have that amount with you. For my location in Europe, I will look into the whole insurance part and try to figure out how easy it is to get money from what you insured. What's the use of insuring something when it costs you lots of time and energy to get it back. Maybe a separate transport insurance might be an option.
Besides all this, you probably should film all packaging you do. At least for the more expensive items. You can even request from the buyer to start taking photos and making film from the moment it arrives. With expensive goods, it shouldn't be a problem. That way, you can show footage of how you packed it and show footage how it arrived. If in between the package was opened, it will be clear immediately. You probably still will have a fight for insurance, but might have a case with law enforcement then. With high-priced items, you should make this clear in the information that you "demand" this (expect cooperation from the buyer on this) or you won't accept return requests. Not sure how e-Bay would respond to this, but if it's mentioned, you at least are better off then without mentioning anything.
Well, just me rambling on and putting my thoughts here that popped up after watching this.

Same if I am travel I will take real good care of it and item that can brake I get all way home undamaged done this for over 12 years. For an item like that, you need a ship in a wooden box and a good amount of material to keep it safe. Arline parts cost a lot of money 10 times more than auto parts.

But working with the owner of an independently run UPS, he informed me that that if delivery people see items that are packaged by UPS they see it as a CHALLENGE to "test" the packaging done by the UPS store employees. I got a notice that the package had been damaged and disposed of by UPS. In another case, a vintage cassette player sold for almost $400 did arrive, but the box was tore up. Seemed like the box had been mauled by wolves. Luckily the cassette player was ok, but I did end up refunding the buyer for the shipping cost. Now I double box anything fragile going out UPS Ground.

I have had problems with UPS with packages delivered to my residence from a major retailer. Three times the packages never arrived, and no attempt was ever made to deliver them. I had to request a refund each time. UPS couldn't find my packages when tracing them from the tracking info. One other package was supposed to contain three items, and only two were inside. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed the package had been opened, and one was removed. On another delivery, UPS was supposed to deliver to the USPS to deliver, and USPS never received any package. So for UPS there is a lot of stealing going on, and they suck. The United States Postal Service, I have had no problems with them. UPS is too risky.

I sold a large farmhouse lighting fixture to an eBay buyer, 2 years ago. It was brand new packed in its original sealed box with Styrofoam. I know how it was packaged because I purchased a pallet of these lighting fixtures from Via Trading here in California. We installed 2 of the lights in our home, gave 2 to our oldest son and 1 to my Mom.
We placed that original box into a Heavy Duty brand new box from Home Depot. About 1 week after receiving his package, the buyer messaged me with photos of the fixture bent on 1 side, requesting a replacement. We immediately suspected foul play, figuring that he must have dropped it.
I sent him a response asking for photos of all the sides of both boxes as that is required for the claim that we will need to submit to the carrier. I then received a response telling me to dismiss the request as he was able to straighten the bend out himself. He never sent the box photos. lol! We figured that he must have panicked when he found out that we were going to open a case with FedEx and decided to end his attempt to scam us for his error! Thank goodness things ended well for Amy! :)

I would definitely check out uship on shipping for stuff like this. You can even link the eBay listing with the pictures. The shipper would be responsible for packing and unpacking the item. Glad the insurance actually did cover it.

I sold a bronze over plaster bust signed by the artist to Pinewood studios in England to be in the Marvel movie that finally came out(was delayed in release due to the pandemic) Black Widow. The bust with packaging weighed about 8 pounds. I wrapped it in tons of bubble wrap and double boxed it. I was soooo afraid it would break and then they would have to find something else to use in the movie as the buyer said it was the perfect prop piece they were looking for and it did arrive in perfect shape, thank goodness. It did sit in customs for like a week or so and so I did reach out to the buyer to make sure they were going to pick it up. I was afraid it might sit to long and it would get sent back to me and I also wanted to know if it arrived safe. If you saw or haven't yet seen the movie, it is the bust sitting on the evil guys desk closer to the end of the movie. The bust was also in the first trailer that came out. I'd been selling for about 6 years when I sold that item. It's always fun when you have sold something that's going to be in a movie or TV show. Tons of friends and family couldn't wait to see the movie to be able to say they knew someone that sold the piece to them. It was in my home a few years before it finally sold. I bought it at a Goodwill for $10! Thanks for letting me share my story. :) You guys rock!

Coincidentally I just got notice yesterday, customer received a 20 piece dinnerware set with 4 pieces broken. I thought my packing was above standard, but luckily she is willing to take a partial refund and keep the rest.! Win win for both of us!

I worked 7 years at the UPS hub a while back. I can confirm packages get destroyed on a regular basis. Sometime it's because there's too much volume and workers can't handle the flow so the packages would fall off conveyor belts. However I'd say that most would break because they would be poorly packaged. It was common to see boxes with 1 little strip of tape holding everything together or loose items rattling around in the box. When it comes to packaging my advice is go overboard. Use a ton of tape and packing materials especially on heavier items. $0.25 more tape could save you a lot of headache!

I sell Disney collectibles myself and I recently a few months back shipped a ceramic photo frame that was super fragile because it had Mickey and Minnie characters on it poking out... It did not sell for a high value only $90 so it was covered under USPS priority shipping but I only paid $2 for it so it was a decent profit! I literally packed this thing with so much bubble wrap double boxed it and even went as far as literally dropping it from arms height and kicking it around opened it and it was still in perfect condition! I repacked it the SAME EXACT way and sent it off... 3 days later I got photos of a completely destroyed frame from my buyer! I couldnt believe it because I have no idea what they could have possibly done to the box to make the item shatter the way it did! Luckily my customer was very understanding and took tons of photos and said she did not see how it could have happened either because it looked to be packaged better than if she had purchased it straight from a store! I will say they did immediately payout the insurance claim and I had the check within 5 days but still to this day it blows my mind! I always add insurance on anything breakable that is over the included insurance value, if it is not a breakable item I usually don't worry about it too much!

I bought a storage locker a few years ago that was only a $70 investment. It was a lab that tested masks and most items could be sold. One machine in particular sold for $3500 within a couple weeks on ebay. I was very nerve racking but was helpful that there was basically no money invested in the item. I just used USPS's maximum insurance on the item. I didnt spend any of the money for 3 months in case there was any issues. Fortunately there were no issues. That was most expensive item I had ever shipped. Anyways I typically get extra insurance for items $150 or higher now. Just makes shipping less stressful. I have found that nothing is safe from damage. I once had an enameled cast iron pan snap in half shipped to Alaska. So I make sure that I am always insured on higher priced items. Love the content.

I ship fragile items through UPS all the time. I have rarely had anything break after perfecting my packaging methods. I wrap the item in at least 2-3 layers of quality bubble wrap. One layer does not cut it! Then I put the item in a box that will fit it with some space around it. I add enough packaging around the item to make sure that it can't shift around even slightly. I mostly use brown contractor paper that can be purchased at the hardware store, but I also use leftover bubble mailers from amazon purchases. After taping the box closed, always shake it. If you can hear anything moving around inside, you NEED more packaging in there. Next I put that box in a larger box with at least 1-2 inches of paper packed around all sides of the initial box. Tape it closed and shake that box too. You should near NOTHING. I have shipped 2-3 glass or ceramic pieces a week for the last 3 years. This method is nearly foolproof. Hope this helps someone! It's a terrible feeling when something you shipped or purchased arrives broken.

I had a vintage Pyrex double coffee brewer that was 100% thin glass. I packed it and packed it with anything I could to keep it safe. It went usps. I was so sure it was going to be busted when it arrives but it arrived 100% unharmed. Sometimes things happen. Packages slip out of hands and are damaged. The key is make by sure you have the insurance you need and the insurance company coming through on their agreement. So glad this worked out for Amy!

Great to know this Josh, thanks. I once sold a heavy duty commercial waffle maker for $200. He opened a return and sent a photo with the top caved in. Josh, it would have taken a sledge hammer to have done that kind of damage! I called him out and said "return it and if the serial numbers match I'll send you a full refund". Never heard from him again. The serial no. was a bluff because I never wrote it down. Lesson learned though, now I include a picture of the no. in the listing.
