How would you make this chess board? This is my answer to that question...

- When a friend of mine approached me about making this for him, he was actually asking me "How would you make this chess board?" What would make it a unique chess board? How would you think through it? How would you integrate epoxy into it? This video is my answer. This video shows how I made this epoxy chess board.

Beautiful board! Only thing though is that I would have tried to avoid the lines of joined boards in the middle of squares in the final product. But even with that, it's still absolutely gorgeous.

@@BrokenThornDesigns If I may suggest one thing would be to experiment with keeping audio normal speed when playback speed increases. Idk if it would sound weird, but maybe itd be more pleasing than the high pitched sound of the tools when sped up? subbed btw

NIce build I made a board pretty much the same way but I used glo in the dark mika for the inlay, pretty neat when playing it on the porch at night.

Nice work - looks great :) Question though about wood movement. Most people who put frames around the chessboards need to leave a gap to allow for movement of the squares. You a recess but it's filled with resin. Will there be any issue with the board warping or even cracking over time? Some people use thin strips and glue it to plywood for stability but yours are thick pieces which will almost certainly move a little. Since this video was from over a year ago have you observed any issues yet? Asking because I'm wanting to make one myself and I hate the idea of having a gap between the squares and frame.
Thanks for commenting. Here in the Midwest part of the US, we experience huge shifts in humidity and temperature depending on the season. There has been no noticeable wood movement on this in over a year. I fully understand you not wanting gaps or cracking, good luck!

Love this. Can you tell me the dimensions of the individual pieces you started with?
I started with boards that I laminated and then cut into 2 1/4" squares. Then, as I milled and glued them, I cut them to a final dimension of 2x2" squares.

As all who have seen your video...very impressive...vary beautiful. A question about the epoxy: It appears you used the "Pearl" epoxy for all grooves, yet those around the squares appear dark while the boarder is pearlescent. Are those around the playing squares picking up the color from the walnut and it's just a difference in width of the "troughs?"
Good eye! I think it's the size of the "troughs" that is making the color difference. The pearl pigment that I used is granular and needs light to bring out the pearlescence. Those troughs seem to block the light. I've thought about using a liquid dye to mitigate some of the color variance, but I would probably lose some of the pearlescence without the powdered pigment. I am making one right now using Wenge and some nice figured Maple, it's looking great so far and I appreciate the amount of work that you put into yours. I think after all that work I might be a little reluctant to route out those handles (I'd be afraid the router would slip and ruin my masterpiece) do you think those handles were necessary especially after beveling the bottom outer edge like you did? also what did you use at the end for a finish, was that just a finishing wax (that you buffed out)?

Yes, the routed handles were a high risk. If I were to do it again, I would use my Pantorouter with a diy template to route them out, it is much safer from catastrophic slipping. So if I were you I would take that (router mishaps) into account. I used Rubio Monocoat pure for the finish. It's a food safe hard wax/oil combo. I love it. It's similar to Odie's oil or Osmo. I would have found a way to dado in an Led strip that projects from underneath to the epoxy strips. Always handy to have a plunge/hand router in the shop if not a router table. I also don't know why people keep going straight from an orbital to their finish coat. All to often an orbital sander will leave micro swirls that can show up unless sanded out by hand using a sanding block.

Would have been interesting to see what it would have looked like if you did a jet black resin between the squares, before then adding the borders and having just the white pearl resin on the borders.

But why gluing the two woods in two boards just to cut them again?
The squares are 2.25" square and the boards that I had to work with were not that thick, so I glued them up and then cut them to the right size squares.
That's one big ass, beautiful chess board. You could use pepper grinders for pawns. Did you make custom oversized pieces to go with it?

Only thing I would have done differently is to use a natural white marble inlay around the border and brass or possibly Ebony inlay around the squares. Im okay with using epoxy for curved and complex inlays, but linear inlays I always prefer to use the natural materials. Personal preference. Fabulous craftsmanship though!

The only thing I wish you would have done differently is at time 15:34 the light and dark squares are not one piece of wood, they are pieced.
Thanks! I agree, one piece of wood would have been even better. I couldn't find any 12/4 maple and walnut to rip into 2" squares so I had to laminate multiple pieces together to get to 2". Thanks for watching.
This is really amazing work. I'm curious how much a project like this would cost, because I would consider commissioning a piece like this if I had a ballpark estimate. In any case, really beautiful craftsmanship.

Thanks! A little under 12 board feet. The walnut was already milled into 2x2 blanks, but the maple had more cutoffs and waste. I would love to see your project when it's done.
@@BrokenThornDesigns I'm going to be using scraps so it will be a little more effort, but next to free. I especially like the epoxy grid and then the thicker lines in the border. Probably round over the top, and do the hand holes with a router, idk. Just an experiment. I was looking for something, so thanks again

Your attention to detail and finesse is brilliant, but how does this design account for wood movement? It looks to me the bordered pieces with grain perpendicular to the rest of the board will likely split along the glue line over time.
Some people have asked about wood movement previously as well. It has not split anywhere as of yet and it has been over three years with multiple season changes happening. But, it is a good question to ask. I think that the movement is so small that it has not affecting the outer border. Thanks for commenting.

Can you please tell me, have you checked how maple wood works with walnut in terms of thermal expansion coefficients? What is the risk that these types of wood are not friendly with each other, resulting in cracking, swelling, or splitting? Also, what if I wanted to make the board wood-block end to top to make the wood structure more fancy - would gluing them be any different?
Ah... wood movement and expansion: Jonathan Katz-Moses (search him on UA-cam) has a video on wood movement from both heat and humidity. He also has printable resources that can actually predict wood movement. It's a great resource for what you are inquiring about. As far as maple and walnut being glued up in tandem, woodworkers make cutting boards with this combination all the time without issues. When I made this board, I made it edge grain on top. I'm not sure what you mean by "wood-block end to top", but if you mean end-grain showing on top, than yes, that would be a very viable option. Gluing would be no different, you would just need to keep the end-grain oriented the way that is most desirable to you. Hope that helps, good luck.

@@petr3788 I had to glue the wood planks together to make planks that were thicker than 2" and then I cut them to a little larger than 2" square so that each square that you see on the board is 2" x 2" after final cutting on the table saw.

I'd love to see it with pieces on. I've just bought a board with 63mm squares, obviously made to a price - but I hope this gets used a lot. Next problem I have is how to store it so that it doesn't get light damage. I don't want to hide it away. Super job.
The friend that asked me to make this has also requested a table or cart for it so he can display it and play it on it. I have lots of ideas concerning that table / cart... I'm the same as you, I don't want it to get damaged or hidden away.

I have nowhere near your skills, and only about half the tools, so... That's one stunning piece of work-- just gorgeous! I enjoyed every nanosecond of that video!

Interesting. There are many "end grain" chessboard videos, but this is the first I've seen of an edge grain one. I guess you stuck the end grains together. Now that Patrick Sullivan has conclusively demonstrated that end grain glue joints are as strong as edge grain, it is open season on innovative designs :) Thank you.
Wow, I'm actually super impressed that you noticed that detail. This board won't be under water (at least I hope not) and the wood was acclimated for a long time (3+ years) so I weighed the risk and reward.

I could have made it thinner, but the look and feel that I was going for was a big, beefy chess board.
I would have whole pieces for the walnut squares instead of gluing up different pieces of walnut. Color match would be what I would want. And I would have used black metalic in the epoxy. Other than that, Nice job.
Yeah, if I had it to do over again, I would have looked for bigger pieces of walnut. I hadn't thought of the black metallic epoxy before, interesting idea. Thanks for commenting

B3 square is really getting to me, what's wrong with it ? E6 too.
I really enjoyed this comment! Depending on what orientation the board is in, I think I know B3 and E6... at least I think I do. Those maple pieces were thinner than the walnut so I had to glue 2 pieces together to get the thickness of the squares. On some, the 2 boards had vastly different wood characteristics. That is what you are seeing there. Also, I filled a void with epoxy. Thanks for commenting!
beautiful chess board. The only thing is with all of the hard and precise work you put in there are orbital scratch marks in the edges 15:03. Most people wouldn't notice or say anything, but I just thought you put such a lot of effort into it just a little more and and it would be faultless given the material you had to work with.

@@BrokenThornDesigns I really appreciate the accuracy of what you have done. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought the thin outlines were a darker timber inlay and I wanted to see how you did that.
I have done lots of projects that have had the same issue with the orbital scratch marks very difficult to eradicate without hand sanding.
Your craftsmanship is absolutely first rate though.
Ive always been a fan of using the right tool for the right job. In this case the right tool is a builder with more skill than myself. He is powered not by electricity, but money.
I've been called a tool before... but never an expensive one.
The incentive to do quality work, like that is not powered by money, alone, to think so is missing the heart of the matter, and speaks more to the superficial nature of the critique

I so badly want to make a chess board, but then every video I watch is like, it's easy, own a drum sander. And I hang my head and walk away.
I understand the frustration of not having bigger tools to make stuff, that's how I started out. You might be able to find someone local that has a drum sander that could help you. Maybe find a local woodworkers' group on Facebook. Just a suggestion, I hope it helps. Thanks for commenting.

Suggestion, every epoxy guru uses a butane torch to get rid of topical bubb;es. Really destroyed the look of the epoxy portion of the table. Cheers.
