    If I played chess more, I'd totally want one. One minor improvement though, consider putting a strip of diffusing paper over the LEDs to make it look like a glow instead of intense spots of light underneath the board.

    Keep a piece of tool box drawer liner folded up by your bench, put it down when you are doing your sanding, it’ll hold the piece while giving you stability to sand and also just shakes off when done. Is simple, but incredibly helpful.

    1. Definitely consider using diffusion paper or spray to cut the led spots.
    2. Maybe make or have a storage battery so it can work on the go that has an adapter inside for both plug and play or on the go.
    3. Consider using glass/epoxy or Glass/epoxy/wood pieces so the color travels to the pieces. Specifically the black pieces.

    I would definitely try some type of diffuser for the lights like others have said. One other thing I would change is to have the lights cover the entire bottom instead of just the edge. It looks great in the dark, but with the lights on (how I assume you’ll usually play), the middle is pretty dark.

    It is a cool idea.
    A few ideas for variants. Have a shined metal plate on the bottom instead of the clear plexi, instead move the plexi up above the LEDs so that the pieces can't damage them.
    Alt construction ideas. Make bars of the epoxy the same size as the square stock. You could glue up sets of 2x2 and then the production speed could be faster and more cost effective.

      Some suggestions for improvements:
      1. Glue the frame together with a 45° cut to each side (Mitre saw)
      2. Insert the acrylic glas into the frame so it is flush with the wood and does not rest on top
      3. Depending on the looks, I'd prefer to have each layer of epoxy in the same tint, so you do not have the different shades when viewed from the side.

Putting felt and/or a reflective material would cancel the LED glow which I think would be a shame. But to each his own. The pieces rattling around is a good point. But I would hate to close off the light glow.

    This is a great project - right in my "level" of wood working. I'm gonna bookmark it for my chessboard project later this year - as soon as I get the pieces.
    Two suggestions: 1) The chess pieces rattling around on the bottom are going to eventually scratch that acrylic. Maybe line it with a small layer of felt instead?
    2) Did you add any "stops" on the opposite side of the hinges? I noticed you were very careful when you closed the top, but some kid or someone not familiar with it might just let it drop. Stops (maybe also felt lined) would help support it better.

    • @lostpacket

      I was also going to comment on the fact that there was no stops to support the other side of the board. If I had the skill set and was making this, I would have also carved a small grove on the side of the board so that it is easier to grip when opening.

    Cool project! Although I'm confused if the transparent squares are supposed to be black or white. It seems obvious because of the black dye, but It completely changes when you turn off the lights. It may also be the case based on the Queens' positions.

      I had the same question. "Queen on her own color" is the standard, and it seemed to me that the queens were set on the opposite color, from how I viewed the design of the board.

      @sambennett9769 Рік тому

      He actually set it up wrong, because the light square is always in the lower right corner, which in how he set it up, is the wood. So the queens are on the wrong square.@@dalemcdowell2684

    It would be awesome if you could mold the black pieces with the same epoxy as the black board squares. You could probably do that by creating the white pieces of wood then using them to make a mold for the black pieces.

    It's good, I like it. I do think there's some room for improvement. I'd have laid down rows or columns of LED lights as well as around the perimeter. Also I'm not a fan of the charred wood effect but that's just personal aesthetic preference.

    I was looking at the thumbnail, and I know it's probably outside your wheelhouse, but a chessboard made out of two different colored epoxies, with LEDs and magnetic sensors underneath tied to a single-board computer with a program to play chess. Magnets in the chess pieces would let the computer know where the pieces were, and it could flash the squares of which piece it wanted to move and where it wanted it moved.

    One tip though, the music is nauseating! It nearly drove me batty after 20+ minutes of it. It also masks the sounds of you working and your tools. I'd much rather hear the sounds of your work even if there is no narration.

    The chess pieces are too large for that board (or the board's squares too small for those pieces). Also you setup the pieces incorrectly - when behind white, with the white square in the right corner near you, the King is on the right, with the Queen to the left of the King.
    "White on the right" for board orientation, and "Queen starts on her own colour" (White Queen on light square, Black Queen on the dark centre square).
    I would also recommend setting up the squares more accurately at the beginning of the project so the lines are straight and every corner of every square is only touching a corner of the other squares, not the side.
    For all that, it's a nice finished piece.

    • @stephenandersen4625
      @stephenandersen4625 2 роки тому

      I was going to say the backwards set up and freehand placement of the squares are the only flaws in an otherwise inventive piece

    The only problem with using clear epoxy is over time it turns cloudy and a horrible shade of yellow and goes rubbery and looses its bond if it’s bonded to a substrate so it’s better to use a dye pigment to change its colour which stops it from turning yellow but won’t stop the cloudiness over time. Even all UV resistant epoxy does this eventually. I hope this helps someone..

    • @joshuaholden4303
      @joshuaholden4303 Рік тому +1

      This is why I only use the Liquid Glass epoxy, never had any yellowing even months-years after. I'm sure it will a little bit and maybe it has but it's not noticeable in anything I've done. I've used others that have yellowed after a couple weeks that claim to be UV resistant.

    • @Biketunerfy
      @Biketunerfy Рік тому

      @@joshuaholden4303 I’ve tried about 15 that claim they are either UV resistant or not effected by UV at all it was only when I spoke to a chemist that I found out that all epoxy’s use phenolics or some form of a phenolic catalyst and I mean all of them, anyway she said it’s not just UV it’s most of them like UVA UVB UVC that break the polymers in the epoxy resin down. This photochemical reaction is responsible for more than just turning the epoxy resin yellowish because you can add UVA protection but to get 100% UV protection you need to give it shades like sunglasses this means adding pigments. It’s only a matter of time before it yellows or goes cloudy might take months or a year but it will happen regardless of a manufactures claims. There are better alternatives out there though especially for casting but epoxy with out dye is a no go.
