wonderful job! The difficulty of doing this with just one hand with such quality really shows how hardworking, skilled and talented you are! I'm a chess fan here in Brazil and I really wanted to have a board like this, I would like to ask you a huge favor and that would be to ask you the measurements of the wood used in this project as well as which wood was used in this work, thank you very much in advance thanks.
Hi and thanks for watching the video. The board is 600mm x 600mm and 22mm thick. I used Huon Pine and Black Walnut for the squares which are 50mm square. The frame around the squares is Rosewood. In the top of the Rosewood frame I added Ebony and Huon Pine inlays. I included an intricate inlay in the edge of the frame made from 100 sections of timber. The edge inlay is Zebrano (Zebra Wood) sandwiched between layers of Ebony and Huon Pine. Some timbers like Huon Pine are only found in Australia and only in Tasmania. Hope to see pictures of your board when made. Regards James
This is easily the most beautiful chessboard I've ever seen, and some of your ideas to clamp and hold parts are just brilliant. The pins and the square to keep things super aligned, what a fantastic idea. Just subbed up now and can't wait to go over your older videos soon, beautiful work! 😍
Well, that comment certainly made me smile and I do love toast (Vegemite on toast). Thanks for watching and appreciating the new and old chessboards/table. Regards James
Thanks Jennifer. Really appreciate the editing recognition. Often, it takes a couple of weeks to edit my videos. I am trying to reduce the editing time and keep the video quality. Fingers crossed. Take care. James
I agree with others about the pins for alignment. That's fantastic! I've made a handful of chessboards using 8/4 stock because my chessboards have a non-flat surface (the idea is to more accurately represent a battlefield). The biggest problem I've had is corner alignment and have had to clamp one strip at a time to make sure everything lines up correctly without slipping. Recently, I came up with the idea of dry clamping it all together and then routing a couple grooves along the underside so I could slip in some steel bars for alignment, but this looks much cheaper, easier, and just as effective (if not more so). Thank you!
Thanks for the comment. I reckon the tape would have worked alone. Pins were added insurance. I also tapped the pins sideways to adjust alignment off camera. Checked out you channel to see if you post the chessboard builds. Will look at some guitar playing. Regards James
@@onehandedmakerOh geez. No need to punish yourself with my guitar videos haha. As for the my chessboards, you can find them on my website which is oneofkime with the usual commercial url ending. What a fantastic chessboard! Love all the inlay work! I haven't worked with Zebra wood yet, but it is definitely on the list and I think it was a great choice for use with the inlays. That's a great tip you shared with the pins for the blue up as well. Really enjoyed the video and will be checking out others on your channel.
Amazing work. The only thing I would change would be the high gloss finish to a matte or semj-gloss finish. But that's just a from a chess playing perspective.
Agree. I wouldn't use such a high gloss next time, it hid the grain and even made photographing the finished board difficult. As it wears I might sand it with 800 grit and give it a coat of wax. Thanks for watching!
Hello sir what an amazing ASMR satisfying work u done. Looks damn beautiful.. And also I dont think people appreciate enough how well u made the chess Table when u were 9years oldd..
Thanks for mentioning the table I built as a child. I remember the satisfaction when it sold to a family in Sydney who lived on the harbour. Happy to receive such a heart warming comment about my current and past chessboards. I noticed you had wood dust on your gloves in your "ball in a box" video and I highly recommend making a chessboard because it's such an interesting piece of furniture. To be honest I made a few really plain boards 50 years ago. Really glad I photographed the most impressive one and managed to keep the photo. Stay well David and thanks.
Wow! Nice miters with the inlays!!! Dude! You're freaking amazing with your precision! Your miter saw is dialed in nicely for making your miters and your miter table is right on as well. Still trying to watch to the end. My youngest son spent several months in Australia just before covid hit. He also went to Tasmania. He loved Australia. I loved learning about the Australian "Light Horsemen" World War 1 and their heroics. There's also a movie on it. Anyway, very impressed with your attention to detail. When you slid the inlay in without any problems was astounding to watch. That never happens in the real world for me. Your father taught you well! God bless him! Thanks for sharing your experience with us rough and tumble yanks who are attempting to call themselves wood workers. Lol...

enjoyed your craftmanship keep up the good work!
Thanks John.
Appreciate you watching and commenting, I will be posting more projects this year.
Regards James
Dude! I'm sold! Your pins and tape trick is golden!
Thanks for watching.
I reckon tape would have worked, but the pins were extra insurance.
James
I watched when I saw the inlays on the edges. It was fascinating to see how you created the look. 😊
I have to admit the pattern was just made up on the day. That said, I love the Zebranowood and would use it again.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Regards James
wonderful job!
Regards
James
Beautiful work! Ive never seen the pin nail trick to align the squares. I learned something today!
I have to admit the tape pretty much held it in place and the pins were a bit of insurance!
Hi Mario.
Amazing comment thanks. So good to hear from Australian Woodworkers too.
Those 45’s were perfect.
Love the picture of the table you build at 9 years of age. I think when I was 9 the most complicated thing I ever made was toast.
Well, that comment certainly made me smile and I do love toast (Vegemite on toast). Thanks for watching and appreciating the new and old chessboards/table.
Regards James
Very nicely done. And a beautiful result. What a way to honor your grandfather, and an heirloom chess set.
Thanks Dell.
It's a simple chess set with a lot of sentimental value. Good to hear from you and I love your channel.
Regards
James
Greta build. Love every segment of it. But the inlay is something else. Beautifull.
Just came across your video/ channel and I’m blown away by the beautiful design. Subscribed so I can make sure I don’t miss anything.
Hey BP.
Welcome to my channel, and thank you for the heartfelt comment.
Hopefully, my future projects will just as entertaining.
Keep well.
James
Loved the video! Great editing! and I agree, once you're bit by the woodworking bug, you love it for life!
I call them Battlefield Chessboards.
If/when I get another order, I’m going to try my hand at making a UA-cam video of the process on a new dedicated woodworking UA-cam channel.
@@onehandedmaker Oh geez, no need to punish yourself with my guitar playing haha. If you'd like to see the chessboard concept, you can find it by searching Battlefield Chessboard + Oneofakimecreations (I hope). I plan to try my hand at a UA-cam video of the process on a new channel dedicated to woodworking if/when I get another order.
@@onehandedmaker My replies seem to be disappearing.. I tried avoiding keywords that may seem like self promotion, but I guess I wasn't careful enough. Anyway, no need to punish yourself with my guitar playing. Though if you'd like to see the chessboard concept, I can tell you how to find it. Apparently not in comments on someone else's video though so if you're interested, maybe drop a comment on any of my videos (or my channel if that's a thing) and I can share.
Excellent! Now I want one!
Very enjoyable to play on but didn't improve my chess.com rating!
Beautiful work. Makes me want to give it a go!
It was one of my most enjoyable builds. Still play on it now and then.
I can’t wait to see what you make next. You’re very talented.
Thanks Rick.
The list is long but I'm thinking of a cajoun drum.
Wow beautifull! Fantastic craftsmanship!
Very happy to receive comments on a project I love!
Perfect job! Bravo! Thanks
Your welcome, and thanks for watching.
Beautiful , really beautiful , thanks for sharing .
I put a lot of myself into this chessboard and still appreciate all the amazing comments it receives.
Thankyou for watching my video.
Have a wonderful day.

I am currently doing what many do when its time to build a project. That is, looking to see what you tube has for ideas and design. The board you built is one of the best I have seen. The one handed technique for construction is nothing short of amazing and the final product is first-class. Thanks for sharing and you now have one more subscriber.
Thanks for watching and the sub David.
How amazing is the variety of project builds on UA-cam. I am happy to make a small contribution and comments like yours are very rewarding.
Would love to see your board when finished. My email is available on my channel.
Regards and thanks again.
James
Just WOW. As another comment said you dad and granddad would be so very proud. You are a true artisan.
Thanks Phil.
It did bring back some memories of games played. Good to hear from you.
@onehandedmaker great to watch your videos, James. Hope you are well.
Very beautiful and smartly made
What a fantastic chessboard! Love all the inlay work! I haven't worked with Zebra wood yet, but it is definitely on the list and I think it was a great choice for use with the inlays. That's a great tip you shared with the pins for the blue up as well. Really enjoyed the video and will be checking out others on your channel.
Thanks Trent.
I get to enjoy this one every day!
Don't play on it much but it's a keeper.
Regards James
The same people ordered more furniture from our family business back in the early 1970s.. Makes me feel old, but still doing what I love keeps me young.
Regards James
you, sir, are an inspiration. great work! I aspire to your level of skill and attention to detail.
Thanks Alan.
Love your guitar collection and have an order to make a Tele this year. Will video the build as well.
@@onehandedmaker I look forward to seeing that build.
Amazing!! Beautiful work!
Happy to hear you like the board. Your channel looks interesting as well.
Slava Russia!!
Beautiful work! The outer inlay looks very cool.
Thanks Rob. One of my favourite builds and it's very pleasing to hear you appreciated it as well.
Inlay looks stunning in real life!

Incredible chess board! I like the creative glue up solution, and the inlay, which was definitely worth the effort.
So good to still be receiving comments on my board. Thanks for checking out my channel as well.
Regards James
How much for the board after finish?
@josephcoates1125 This one is a keeper and will go to my son with the chess set one day.
To build a similar board would sit around $750 au depending on complexity of inlay.
Gorgeous work. I'm amazed at how you do this with one arm. Cheers to you sir. Woodumakeit brought me here and I'm happy to be here.
Woodumakit was the inspiration for the build. Really appreciate the praise and that you enjoyed my video.

Gorgeous! Another amazing piece and video.
Many thanks

Hello, simply fantastic. It's the best work I've ever seen. Congratulations. From Curitiba, Brazil
Such a beautiful comment thanks Adair. How is Curitiba today?
@@onehandedmakerCuritiba today? Beautiful, welcoming. Welcome!!
Holy Crap Dude! Your mitered joints at the corners of your board made my jaw hit the floor when you put them together! I got a kick out of your response when you saw them yourself lol! I haven't watched the whole video, but had to comment on your perfect joints! Will comment at the end if I see anymore genius in you! I chose to watch your video from the icon that showed your board with a fantastic finish on it. I wasn't expecting such great joinery work!
I'm sitting here having a cup of tea Sunday morning, and your comment appeared. Made my day that you took the time to watch the video and post an amazing comment.

Thankyou Andy.
Excellent work!
@@Rogues4Ever Thank you very much for watching my video.
Respect Man! Beautiful work❤
Thank you for your kind words.
Very appreciated.

I am inspired to build a chessboard that is exactly half as beautiful as the one I just watched you build. I believe your work of art is worthy of your Grandfather's chess pieces. Have you ever made a chessboard that was not a stunning museum piece?
Happy to receive such a heart warming comment about my current and past chessboards.
I noticed you had wood dust on your gloves in your "ball in a box" video and I highly recommend making a chessboard because it's such an interesting piece of furniture.
To be honest I made a few really plain boards 50 years ago. Really glad I photographed the most impressive one and managed to keep the photo.
Stay well David and thanks.
So very cleaver. Nice job!
@@patnpugs Thank you so much for your comment. It means a lot to me when people reach out after watching my videos.

a great work, I've learn a lot of your video, thank you.
Lol...
I am sincerely flattered and humbled by your praise.
Good to hear your son liked Aus and got to Tassie.
Do you have a woodwork shop?
James
You got a great finish on there with the epoxy. I have never thinned mine down before but it seems to have helped it brush on nice and evenly. Fine work as always - that is a beautiful piece!
Really good to have return viewers A&A
the pins you used could be small nails cutting the head? Because I think is so difficult to find pins of that size.
