Really nice work, James! That's clever to use pins and divots for alignment. Making the inlay must have been quite tedious, but the time and effort really paid off. Like everything else you've made, the result is beautiful!!
Thanks Mike and good to hear from you. The inlay took hours but the time went quickly. Have to admit, I just made the inlay up and didn't plan it so the result even surprised me.
Thanks Bill, I made a lot of crap boards before making this one. UA-cam is a wonderful teacher and I am willing to learn so I keep lifting the bar on design and technique. Glad you watched the video. Regards James

Hello sir what an amazing ASMR satisfying work u done. Looks damn beautiful.. And also I dont think people appreciate enough how well u made the chess Table when u were 9years oldd..
Thanks for mentioning the table I built as a child. I remember the satisfaction when it sold to a family in Sydney who lived on the harbour. The same people ordered more furniture from our family business back in the early 1970s.. Makes me feel old, but still doing what I love keeps me young. Regards James
It is a beautiful board thanks. Currently in my lounge room so I get to see it every day but still can't bring myself to place a coffee cup on it! Thanks for checking out my UA-cam video. James

@onehandedmaker Haha yeah, no worries, I get that. Can't wait to see more. Based in the UK, I am planning to make a chess board, yours is the best one I've seen
@RickyD1968 Thanks Ricky. Appreciate your view and comment. Possibly the project I am the most proud of and happy with. I don't even mind being beaten in chess on this board. Regards James
Just out of curiosity I was a removalist in Sydney with bowtie removals many many years ago and I did a move for a gentleman who had 1 arm and he made wood Domino sets. My offsider and me bought 1 each of him. He signed inside the lid with the initials. One hand made by R.E.P. Would this be you?

James... With using the epoxy, you're not concerned with any expansion or contraction with the different types of wood? I assume the epoxy totally isolates the board from moisture. I apologize, but your accent is hard for me to understand when you mentioned you diluted your epoxy with acetone? Did you say by 10 percent? Is that to give you more working time or to reduce bubbles? You did a knock out job with your wood working skills, but left a lot to the imagination when it came to applying your finish of the epoxy. Was it all brushed on or did you do an actual pour too? This is top notch work and that's why I'm being a little persistent. I'm not looking to duplicate your work, but your techniques I definitely would like to apply to some projects of my own design. Again, amazing work my friend. Was a real joy seeing what your father created (The artist in you) and the amazing board that you created! Thanks for sharing!
Hi again. Diluted the epoxy 10 percent to help it self level. Then, I used a vacuum chamber to remove air from epoxy. Levelled the board and brushed on two coats with 2 days in between coats. The epoxy took 24 hours to harden, so I covered the board to keep dust and bugs away. Getting a good finish from epoxy is tricky and I recommend finding product you think will suit your needs and practice applying it by pour or brush. That said, even when I pour I usually brush it around to spread the epoxy. The main thing I have learned is keep the dust off it until it hardens and don't be afraid to pop bubbles in the first few hours. Wood can always move, but with the ply backing and large splines in the mitred corners I'm hoping it won't. If you make a similar board please post a picture.
Beautiful chessboard and great video. I want you to make me one and put up a video so I can show my chess friends. Would $1000 cover the board and video?
Just come across your channel. Congrats on such a great job. And I must say very inspirational, I sometimes reflect on things I once was able to do but the body doesn’t want to do these days. I’m very much looking forward to getting our into my beloved workshop tomorrow. I’ll be looking forward to viewing more of your content.
Awesome job sir. A first rate board if, ever there was one. I too build boards, upon request, and thoroughly appreciate what it takes to render such a beauty. However, I can't help pointing out one minor, topically unrelated detail; in the pictures of the finished product I notice that both sets of pieces have their Kings and Queens placed on the wrong squares. Kings always start on e1 and Queens on d1. Respectfully of course.
It's great to get a comment from someone who has made a few chessboard. Much appreciated. Will check my placement in future! Do you post pictures of your boards? I would like to check them out. Regards James
wonderful job! The difficulty of doing this with just one hand with such quality really shows how hardworking, skilled and talented you are! I'm a chess fan here in Brazil and I really wanted to have a board like this, I would like to ask you a huge favor and that would be to ask you the measurements of the wood used in this project as well as which wood was used in this work, thank you very much in advance thanks.
Hi and thanks for watching the video. The board is 600mm x 600mm and 22mm thick. I used Huon Pine and Black Walnut for the squares which are 50mm square. The frame around the squares is Rosewood. In the top of the Rosewood frame I added Ebony and Huon Pine inlays. I included an intricate inlay in the edge of the frame made from 100 sections of timber. The edge inlay is Zebrano (Zebra Wood) sandwiched between layers of Ebony and Huon Pine. Some timbers like Huon Pine are only found in Australia and only in Tasmania. Hope to see pictures of your board when made. Regards James
I am inspired to build a chessboard that is exactly half as beautiful as the one I just watched you build. I believe your work of art is worthy of your Grandfather's chess pieces. Have you ever made a chessboard that was not a stunning museum piece?
Happy to receive such a heart warming comment about my current and past chessboards. I noticed you had wood dust on your gloves in your "ball in a box" video and I highly recommend making a chessboard because it's such an interesting piece of furniture. To be honest I made a few really plain boards 50 years ago. Really glad I photographed the most impressive one and managed to keep the photo. Stay well David and thanks.
I enjoyed every minute of this video...& I learn a lot of new tricks... cutting the end pins to create a divots a reference point 👍...using masking tape on the underside of the board ''Genius'' ...thanks for sharing James .
Oh wow that is stunning! Loved it all and my favourite part is your commentary, the funny bits like where the chess piece got hurt at the beginning of the video and your efforts as a 9 year old! Just very clever. Hi to your beautiful wife Jo from Kylie from her old work. I miss her....
Hi Kylie, I will pass your message onto Jo. Fantastic to hear from you and receive such an encouraging comment. FYI the commentary is the hardest part for me and it's great to know you find it entertaining. Take care James
and i complain sometimes missing some fingers, even with both my hands i wonder if i come to your standard. the pins is genius together with the tape. and the inlay made the board pop. how do you hold things with the mitre saw? and how do you do it with screw glue clamps? even with one and half hand i have trouble some times to get them from sliding once you have them on. keep them coming i really looking forward you are a true inspiration.
Amazing comment thanks. I am very fortunate to have a custom set up workshop which I adjust all the time. That combined with patience and sheer determination gets it done! The videos don't show all the frustration and mistakes so I add a few as bloopers in my latest video. Regards James

I put a lot of myself into this chessboard and still appreciate all the amazing comments it receives. Thankyou for watching my video. Have a wonderful day. James
James, I really admire your patience and the preparation you put into each step of your build...something I definitely need to learn! Thank you for the tips as well; I can't wait to put these to good use. Cheers!
Patience in the workshop is a must for me. Daydreaming about the next step and not concentrating on what I'm doing is common for me, so I slow it all down a bit. Happy to hear you got some tips. Regards James
Good question. I always planned to add the splines which I had to trim at 11:45. Then I had to design the inlay which covered the corner splines. Does this answer your question? Thanks James
What a beautiful chessboard. The inlay work is super detailed. I like how you created the edge inlay. Tape and pins is a great way to align your glue up. The finish is stunning. Great work. Thanks for sharing your incredible talent.
Thanks Rick. Amazing comments like yours are so inspiring. I never thought my work would reach so many people all over the world. Very humbling. Many thanks James
Hi there. Great comment and thanks for watching my build. May need to build a mantelpiece first but added felt to the base of the chess pieces for now. FYI I owned a Series One LWB ute in 1984/1985. It was a lot of fun to drive with the doors off through the state forests. Regards James
This is easily the most beautiful chessboard I've ever seen, and some of your ideas to clamp and hold parts are just brilliant. The pins and the square to keep things super aligned, what a fantastic idea. Just subbed up now and can't wait to go over your older videos soon, beautiful work! 😍
Dude you're the man. Better chess set than I can make with two hands. Just shows good tools and good knowledge of how to use them goes a very long way. Your work is very impressive with or without two hands!
That board is gorgeous! I’ve seen your YT handle before, but this is the first of your videos that I’ve watched. Great job! I just subbed. Looking forward to more!
Thanks Brett. I love having the board in my home and playing chess on it. About to watch your helical head upgrade video which is my next workshop splurge! Regards James
Amazing work. The only thing I would change would be the high gloss finish to a matte or semj-gloss finish. But that's just a from a chess playing perspective.
Agree. I wouldn't use such a high gloss next time, it hid the grain and even made photographing the finished board difficult. As it wears I might sand it with 800 grit and give it a coat of wax. Thanks for watching!
absolutely gorgeous work sir. I just also made a chessboard for my father and me after watching wood u make it channel. I admire your work as well sir!
Subscribed, just came across your channel. Your work is incredible and even more so with 1 arm! I'm doing my own chess board as we speak and it ain't as good as yours! The alignment pins were genius. In mine I glued a pair of strips at a time before gluing the pairs together haha. Your method is much more straight forward and accurate. I'm up to the splines but now I've seen your inlays, I think I've got more work ahead of me haha! The vertical zebrano sandwiched between the thin strips elevated what was already an amazing piece. Stunning work mate!
Bravo! This is the first of your videos that I watched. I love that you don't let missing an arm keep you from doing what you love! Keep up the good work.
Thanks Ben. Good to read your encouraging comment. I hope to keep producing woodwork and projects for as long as I can. I enjoy creating and UA-cam has lifted my enjoyment to another level. Regards James
Just7 seconds I to the video you were telling the viewer about the last ti.e you made a chessboard(50 years prior), it was obvious that your left sleeve of your shirt was empty of your arm, however, in the milling montage it showed you pushing the lumber with your left Armand hand with your right shirt sleeve e empty, am I seeing this vs or are you trying g to scam/ fool us?
Hi Cary, Very observant of you and made me go back and have a look at the milling montage myself. The video editing software allows you to flip footage so left is right or right is left and I wanted the timber to be moving in a different direction to the other timber in frame so I flipped the clip Never occurred to me at the time it might look strange. Take care
Hi again, Mike McCrory from USA makes stunning chessboards. woodumakeit@gmail.com. Look up his channel @Woodumakeit on UA-cam and tell him I referred you.
The whole thing is stunning, especially under finish at the end. Did the epoxy self level, or did you have to level sand it a lot, and did the acetone help that with the reduced viscosity? Cheers!
Hi Chris, Loving your guitar builds on Insta lately. I used LuciClear casting resin which is Australian brand I think and it did self level. They make a Finishing Resin that dries faster for table tops which I want to try. The chessboard ended up with two coats because it takes a day to set and I didn't keep it covered properly. Lesson learned again.
@onehandedmaker I'm fairly new to woodworking, but have so far made some nice cutting boards, hallway and coffee tables, and various basic stuff. I'm a chess enthusiast and I'm aiming to build a chessboard soon. I think the wood selection is important, so need to find a good source of maybe maple and walnut (or whatever I can easily get here in the UK).
@paulwaite6777 Can't go wrong with Walnut and Maple for a chessboard. Do you post pictures of your builds on social? Would love to see what you make. James
@onehandedmaker I am in the process of taking pics of my work and intend to get them on a website eventually. A work in progress I guess haha. Until then I have pics of most of my work on Pinterest - page is called MyBottleOpener. I got good at making magnetic bottle openers during covid, and my idea is to have a site dedicated for them, and a site for furniture etc. It's all a pipedream at the moment. It's great getting inspiration from you UA-cam woodworkers, it's what got me into woodworking in the first place during covid. Now it's a real passion!
Great work. Makes my chess board look like crap. I liked the use of the tape and pins on your glueup

Came here from Reddit. Stunning job, congratulations!
Looking forward to the next part 😊
Thank you for watching the build. Welcome to my channel as well.
Spending lots of hours on inlay is just barley enough.
the pins you used could be small nails cutting the head? Because I think is so difficult to find pins of that size.
Wow you are so talented! I can’t even do that, that’s how talented you are! Great Work!
Great comment thankyou and thanks for checking out my channel.

Beautiful comment thankyou my friend.
Do you have pictures of the board you made?
@@onehandedmaker yes sir
Subscribed, just came across your channel. Your work is incredible and even more so with 1 arm! I'm doing my own chess board as we speak and it ain't as good as yours! The alignment pins were genius. In mine I glued a pair of strips at a time before gluing the pairs together haha. Your method is much more straight forward and accurate. I'm up to the splines but now I've seen your inlays, I think I've got more work ahead of me haha! The vertical zebrano sandwiched between the thin strips elevated what was already an amazing piece. Stunning work mate!
Hi Kieran, great to hear you're making a board and would love to see the finished project.
Thanks heaps for your fantastic comment and the sub.

Thanks Ben.
Good to read your encouraging comment. I hope to keep producing woodwork and projects for as long as I can.
I enjoy creating and UA-cam has lifted my enjoyment to another level.

Hi Cary,
Very observant of you and made me go back and have a look at the milling montage myself.
The video editing software allows you to flip footage so left is right or right is left and I wanted the timber to be moving in a different direction to the other timber in frame so I flipped the clip
Never occurred to me at the time it might look strange.
Take care
Thank you for responding and clearing that up for me,no offense was meant!
None taken. Very happy you paid attention to my video!
I like your chest board! Are you selling or do you know where I can find one for myself.
Thanks for watching the video. This one isn't for sale but I will be making more later I the year.
What country do you live in?
USA
Hi again, Mike McCrory from USA makes stunning chessboards. woodumakeit@gmail.com.
Look up his channel @Woodumakeit on UA-cam and tell him I referred you.
Dude! I'm sold! Your pins and tape trick is golden!
Thanks for watching.
I reckon tape would have worked, but the pins were extra insurance.
James
The whole thing is stunning, especially under finish at the end. Did the epoxy self level, or did you have to level sand it a lot, and did the acetone help that with the reduced viscosity? Cheers!
Hi Chris, Loving your guitar builds on Insta lately.
I used LuciClear casting resin which is Australian brand I think and it did self level. They make a Finishing Resin that dries faster for table tops which I want to try.
The chessboard ended up with two coats because it takes a day to set and I didn't keep it covered properly. Lesson learned again.
very good.,very good, very good,
Thankyou so much for watching my video.
Regards James
Beautiful job
Thanks for your view and comment
Keep making chess boards please. Its very therapeutic to watch

@Creatorofnothing- Such a great comment thanks. I'm so pleased you like the board.
Regards James
Love this build. Some great tips and great design elements. Thank you
Thanks Paul.
Good to hear you enjoyed the video and got something out of it.
Do you build boards?
Very nice bro
Thanks heaps and appreciate your view!
Perfect job! Bravo! Thanks
Your welcome, and thanks for watching.

I would like to say I'm unbeaten on the board, but my son gets me 2 out 3 games.
Still such a wonderful feeling to play on it.
Good👍
