I had been wondering the entire time why the client would want to select the music which played during your build. Then I realized: He was making memories for his grandson, Max, to remember him by. He'll realize one day what a great gift it is to have such a thoughtful granddad.

The music initially requested by the client was a few tracks from Billy Idol's self-titled debut album that was released in 1982. The craftsman could not locate his copy of Billy Idol "Billy Idol" so there was no White Wedding, Hot In The City, or Dancing With Myself playing behind this wonderful video. Fortunately, the client's second choice, Vivaldi - Four Seasons, was easy to locate and meld into this video.

I totally enjoyed your video. Being a woodworker myself, I was amazed at your talent and drooled over a few of your tools. This video was reminiscent of a time when my dad (who passed away 5 years ago) made a chess board for himself and another for his father when I was just a child myself. One board was a present for my grandfather on his 62nd birthday. That board has now passed on to me and will pass on to my son at some point in the future.
You have created a chessboard that will be handed down for generations as well and treasured through the ages! Job well done!

Stunning! I'm entering the the cnc woodworking and in my research and studying this popped up and I became mesmerized.
You hit on so many different aspects with a quality edit job of procedures. Wonderful presentation.
Part of me wonders what if, using the cnc, creating those initials with the birdseye as inlays ~ MMMMM.... but still, beautiful woods. And cool to see the most wonderful go-to lacquer. Its so amazing to work with when you get everything right, yet lets you recover if you have to back track. I think epoxy's give you great durability, but lacquer gives a beauty you can't beat.
And finally, I loved the music and thank you for making the video last for the entire arrangement. Quite fitting

I bought all the tools to make chessboards. Made them out of solid wood using various kinds of jointing techniques and every one of them cracked going through Minnesota dry winters and wet summers. Used sanding sealer and pre-cat lacquer too. I ended up burning them all in the firepit. I think the plywood is key but I'll bet anything the walnut boarder will still crack. My boards would twist like pretzels in winter.

Wow, what a great board! You are very creative in finding the technical solutions, and you have great artistic integrity in attention to detail and beauty. I am particularly excited about your choice of wood grain, this is the only board I have seen with the wood flowing forward, which is the natural flow for the player. All the other boards I see are either end grain, which is a matter of taste, or have the wood pointing sideways (as the reverse side of your board). I would choose forward flow, but your board leaves the option. A great work, you can be very proud. And I think your young client will cherish it well into the 22nd century, carrying the memory of his grandfather, and your signature.
