Not only that I think the English officials may have also over stated the cruelty to make English citizens hate the Pirates even more.

There are many, many diaries, letters and other related records of pirate attacks that show almost all men sailing the seas at that time were extremely cruel and barbaric, whether they were pirates or not. Even into the 1940s, English Naval ships were known for their vicious punishments, and continued an ancient practice of using young cabin boys as sex slaves while at sea. Unfortunately, as a long time history student, I have come across too much evidence that shows the pirates weren't the only psychopaths sailing!!!

One can see why the English ended up dealing with most pirates by hanging.
Considering the conduct of many pirates this was a pretty mild way to execute such
criminals. It is hard to believe that all pirates were simply hanged and not tormented to
suffer the same tortures they inflicted on others.

Often they were hung with short ropes which strangled them. So they got a taste. They were also often hung in chains which left them to the elements and fauna to finish them off.

Blackbeard was actually pretty civil to his captives, he knew that if the crew knew they wouldn't be killed or tortured they would be more likely to surrender without a fight instead of fighting for their lives. Probably why he was so successful.

Theres a big difference between piracy and state approved piracy, which was called privateering. Piracy meant you would go after all ships, privateering meant you would only go after ships from countries that your government wants you to. Privateering was legal, piracy was not.

My dad's father's side of my family is Welsh and Irish, the Welsh side, my great-grandpappy is related to Black Bart Roberts. They had to leave Wales because anyone related to Bart was considered guilty by blood. A lot of family history is lost in the Mid 1700s when the pirate was at his height of infamy, he took more than 500 ships in his career.

If a pirate asks you politely to do something, you do it. Pirates aren't know for being polite, so when they are you'd better be afraid.
If you did what they said you were tortured and killed anyway for their enjoyment. From the stories i gather in this video, there was no productive point in kindly listening to what the pirates asked, except for the last story where the pirate actually let the tortured spaniards live, but they didnt take the city anyway and they all got eaten by cannibals.

But, she was the most successful. She commanded nearly 2000 ships, took on the naval forces of three empires (and won), retired with a noble title, had children and grandchildren and died of old age.
She’s the most successful pirate that ever sailed, and barely anyone knows her name.

There are only a few documented paintings or etchings of real pirates. Most are conjectural from later time periods.

Neither one of those two compare.they had more written about them then Any other pirates. There are a few he didn't mention that where really evil though.
