2 Deadliest and Most Feared Pirates of the Golden Age of Sail
Вставка

- Pirate captains and their crews were violent, even ruthless. Part of this was a necessity. But some captains went beyond the normal, creating an art out of atrocity. Captain Blackbeard and Charles Vane, both household names to this day, were such captains, employing cruelty in a calculated, systematic way. Both men prospered and perished, living and dying by the jolly-roger. But who were Blackbeard and Charles Vane, and how did they end up capturing hearts and minds alongside ships and silver? We will answer these questions, and more, in this video, our first episode looking at the lucrative, violent and, often, tragic, lives of pirates through history.
0:00 Introduction
2:58 Blackbeard (Edward Teach)
16:25 Charles Vane

History Should Never Be Forgotten...
Edward Teach, Blackbeard's last infamous words. "We would have been great men, had it not been for gold." You think he learned of some power, yes he did.
dont get the last bit
Only we bit of power.
@@Ravishrex1 Were those _really_ your last words, sir?
in a world without gold we could've been hero's!!
-Edward teach, assassins creed black flag
Except they weren't as huge on gold as they were on weapon, food and water etc. That's what they usually plundered, the "gold" here was trade goods, sugar, leather and shit like that. Which was basically overflowing with on trade ships around and in the west indies by the time.
I love how black beard seized the flour and then started making dough 😂😂
Charles Vane is only a "household name" because of Black Sails. He was good pirate, but not much mention of him in history, even though his jolly roger is the classic "skull facing forward with crossed bones". The famous "skull facing forward with crossed swords" is Calico Jack's, and that is the story I'm most looking forward to, mostly because of my favorite pirate, Anne Bonny.
Black Sails was a dope show. I just found it randomly like 2 years ago. I wish it had more than 4 seasons though.
My understanding of Vane was he was a very brutal man, often enjoying torturing the sailors and merchants of captured ship more than indulging in captured goods.
I could be wrong though.
@@Katpiratefan275 most of them did not care as much about valuable goods. Like we think. At least for Flying Gang pirates. Vane is a victim of modern day morals being used for historical figures. When you understand how he grew up, and how he was used by superiors who wished to utilize his upbringing for their benefit. Which is where the label of bloodthirsty torturer comes from.
Really we dont know exactly where or when the famous skull and cross bones came from. There are reports of it being used hundreds of years before Golden Age pirates. But it is interesting how Flying Gang pirates in unison used it as a symbol. Considering how other pirates like Henry Avery used the "Bloody flag" or red flag. It was almost like there movements symbol. Including Blackbeard, who's historical flag is nkthing like we think of it (which is actually a design based off of Ed Low's reported flag) but was very similar to the Vane flag you mention. Which is so freaking cool lol (freaking love pirate history)
Finally...something besides WW1 or 2. I've been waiting for some vintage stuff on this channel, keep it up;)
The energy at the start of this video in particular is brilliant
Love your content man. Would love to see more videos on much older battles in history
Thx for uploading. I never heard of Charles Vane until this. Morgan, Avery, Rackam, Kidd, Roberts, Tew, Wilmerding, L’Olonnais, Barbarossa
Such a damn great channel. You would benefit from some better playlist categorization. More pirates please.🙏 I'd also love to see you cover China's Three Kingdoms Era as there's so much great stories and history involved. Times are tough but I'm starting a new job in a couple weeks and sincerely look forward to supporting this great content.
hey! how's the job going?
Nice work👍🏻
Black beard was the most badass pirate ever. ☠️
I found this channel today. I watched this and a video on different pirate ships. Both were really interesting. 👍🏻
This is a great video!
Convenient how count dankula recently made a mad lad video on black beard.
Great video! I love pirate 😁
There is a legend told that after he was beheaded his body swam 3 times around maynards ship
Only Vane I've heard of, is Weather Vane.
This is going to be a great series!
Ya I was very stoked when he said this is going to be a series.
I like this man voice of narration.
The thumbnail is a Easter egg from the movie "The Goonies" one of my favorite.
This is giving me AC Black Flag flashbacks.
Pirates weren't necessarily cruel at all.
Most of what is told about them is not true, rumours made up and spread by the pirates themselves.
Compare them to the British, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch empires, that very literally committed genocide on massive scales.... Wiping out entire cultures and populations.
Just because they weren’t as bad as the English, French or Dutch doesn’t mean they were in any way nice guys.
Im pretty sure that being a thug for your own ends rather than for a flag doesn't qualify you as a better person, or even a good one
@@razorfett147 "They were not just seabound thugs..." - The video you literally just watched...
@@todaywefly4370 hardly anyone was back in the 1600-1700's to be fair...
Who doesn't like pirates?
Well ok, apart from Amber Heard.
Haha good one
😝🤘
No quarter flag flies on her mast 🤙😂
This aged well
This really aged well
So does that mean that the skeleton hanging from the cliffs in Pirates of the Caribbean 1 may have been Charles Vane's?
Fun fact that arch is actually at Saint Lucia.
Very good. But I did love Black Sails.
captured flour. "Now he's making serious dough." indeed. :-)
Dont know why but I realllly fancy a "Captain Morgans " on the rocks 🥃👍😁
That's how he lost his ship...
personally ac4 charles vane is my favorite
What about Long John Silver?
"Making serious dough" (100 barrel flour booty) 😆
God Save The King. Long Live The King.
Actually Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago, not Spanish. Great video non the less!
Tragedy period!
Xoxo I have been in STL.MO.USA NOW HELPING DA NATIONAL GUARD
We all know Edward Teach was killed by the One Legged Man
Shiver me timbers. Let's pillage and burn Havana. Me heartie's.
Barbarossa 😁
Last words? Lol
Wish I was a pirate 🤣
Blackbeard came from Belgium....
So you story is off
Like with most villains, the "good guys" ganged up on him because they weren't enough without their pathetic pack mentality to face him like a man.
So much misinformation about Teach/Thatch/Thatche. His death was an illegal assassination and occurred after he had retired from high seas pirating. His “terror and tyranny” was a myth. He was well liked by people in his community and, in retirement, opened up trade and goods swapping with his neighbors. Of course, he never really “retired,” but was not a high seas pirate at the time of his assassination and has also taken the pardon. There is no evidence or account of Blackbeard killing anyone but there are accounts of him being a “gentleman pirate.” Blackbeard was a creation of the British before the pardons flowed. Similarly, there is no evidence or accurate account of Hornigold “mentoring” or leading Blackbeard. In fact, it could’ve been the other way around. Any information regarding BB from British sources at the time is mostly propaganda mixed with some fact, mostly about technical details. There was no interest in accurately reporting who the pirates were, especially considering that many were Jacobites (like Blackbeard.)
Zehahahaaa!!!
Women pirates have been understated back then females were seen and not heard ,youv got to take your hat off to them imagine them being captain of the ship ☠️
all i can say is aaaarrgggg
Total fiction
True. There is no such place as Britain.
This is just parroting the narrative that the empire started when Thatch was still alive.
oops.. scam for the FRE$E back pack add.
scam
