Yeswelder Firstess MP200 Part 2: Stick, Dual Shield and Lies

  • This is part two of my in-depth look at the Yeswelder Firstess MP200. I test dual shield flux core wire and stick welding. I also find that despite the claims to be fixing issues and the vast marketing campaigns attempting to paint Yeswelder as a major player in the welding industry and a massive Kickstarter campaign that raised millions of dollars, they are still releasing the same, falsely advertised products they always did. Get better, Yeswelder! I'm fresh out of "benefit of the doubt."
    Accurate specs, accurate advertising and accurate data tags don't cost any more and should be the bare minimum expectation. We wouldn't accept this from any other industry. If we found that Canon cameras all had 25% less resolution than claimed and the included batteries were half the capacity and voltage shown on the label, it would be a major scandal full of angry customers. If it was discovered that cans of Pepsi were only 10 oz. and had twice as much sugar and twice the calories as what the nutrition label claimed, it would be a major scandal. If it was discovered that Ford's latest V8 engine had two fake cylinders on the end and was actually a V6, there would be major backlash.
    What if a company takes in millions of dollars for a Kickstarter campaign and delivers a product that can't do what is says? What if that product's specs and claimed capabilities are inaccurate? Should we care? What if this company has an entire product line littered with products that can't meet the rated specs? Should we care? Or should we just accept it because "it's cheap?"
    As requested by several viewers, I have set up a Patreon account. Any support is appreciated, but absolutely not required.

    I have no problem with someone liking Yeswelder machines, being satisfied with the performance and value of Yeswelder machines, or even singing their praises if that's how they feel.
    But this isn't exactly a budget machine. Yeswelder took in millions of dollars in funding for the MP200. It is currently $1,000 on their website. That isn't a super cheap machine. $1,000 is a LOT of money.
    Yeswelder is pushing their brand all over the place. the hashtag "why we weld" is all over the internet and even in my e-mail box. This company, in their words, is passionate about welding with a love for the industry and is making high-quality, state-of-the-art, high performance, safe equipment. But at the same time, they are releasing welders that haven't been submitted to any safety or regulatory agency for any kind of testing or certification. Though that doesn't stop them from printing the actual certification code those agencies use on their completely inaccurate data tags. It doesn't stop them from including manuals (for the welders that actually include manuals) full of inaccuracies and misinformation. It doesn't stop them from selling machines that are often not fully capable of what they claim and are programmed so the display will make it LOOK like they are.
    One thing I didn't mention in this video is warranty coverage. In my phone conversation with them, I brought up the fact that they have no official warranty policy. They emphatically stated that they would take care of issues. From what I've heard, they generally do take care of issues, at least very early on. But I explained to them that without something in writing, customers are left guessing what is covered, what the actual policy is and whether it might change on a whim without any recourse. Yeswelder assured me they were presently having lawyers write up a warranty policy. Here we are, nearly a year later after the release of two more machines, and there is still no mention of an actual, official warranty policy. The product page for the MP200 doesn't make a single mention of any warranty. Is there one? Maybe. What is it, how long is the coverage and what does it cover? Who knows.
    I think if Yeswelder is going to advertise that they care about their customers, care about quality, care about the industry and are committed to becoming part of the welding community, then they should be held accountable for their disregard for honest advertising and for their misrepresentation of specs and performance.

      I got a question is if it's possible if I can send you a welder that I've been using for a while so you could put it through its paces and see what you think and if it meets the specs that it says that it is because I've been pretty damn happy with it and I do believe it's putting out the 200 amps that it is and it is a scratch start machine too but it works better than the yes welder it has manual settings and manual adjustments and everything or if you can actually find one it is called a plasmargon mig 255 very inexpensive you can find them on eBay for about $320 and they seem to work damn good and I even changed out the liner on my mig gun and I push aluminum through the mig gun and weld aluminum with it too with 5356 spools in it.

    A note about self-shielded FC - 0.030 is only good for for up to 150ish amps depending on induction. It starts running like crap when you run too thin a wire at too much amps. My theory is the wire has no preheat time, even with a longer stick-out at out-of-rating amperages so more of the flux vaporizes before it has a chance to shield the puddle. So solution . . .bigger diametre wire. Love self shielded wire. Great vid, thanks.

    I initially pre-ordered a YesWelder MP200 back in November 2021 expecting a January delivery. After delivery was pushed back to 'possibly' March, I canceled the order and instead went with the YesWelder MIG 205DS. Gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised by it and so far, so good...its met my expectations. If I had to make my living as a welder, I'd probably have gone with a Miller or Lincoln, but since I only need something for home/hobby projects this is more than adequate. Anytime I've called them with a question, I always managed to reach a human, and emails have always been answered fairly quickly.

      Prime weld is solid, tons of other reviews you can watch they are one of the good Chinese companies actually doing the work to make a reputable brand in the industry. AHP is good too, for cheaper machines check out Hitbox Welders and Herocut Plasma cutters , both are good company’s that don’t lie and stick to their word, as well as make some killer shit for the price. For ex, herocut only makes plasmacutters, that’s their main focus I think they made one multiprocess machine and that’s it, maybe they have more out now but they focus on plasma and make awesome solid units that output honest amps and duty cycle, as well as use good components and accessories like the torch etc. Hitbox, same thing but they make welders mostly. If I was to buy a welder and do it all over again , I would start with these two and work my way into a Canaweld, Esab, Fronious or CEA, Or Kemppi . Kemppi and fronious , Esab and CEA are my top , Canaweld as well but the best part about them is their quality and pricing, made in Canada and utmost best quality, service etc. I am waiting on a Mig Stick 202 which has a crazy 170 amp 100% duty cycle at 40 degree Celsius, 190 amp 60% at 40 degrees Celsius and 200 amps at 35% , as well as a AC DC pulse TIG . The mig stick was 1800 CAD after tax , including INSURED shipping, and the Tig was $2300 . Awesome local brand that everyone here values and adores, they are canadain treasure

    I got mine at half off in the Kickstarter. It's my first welder. I use almost solely flux core at the moment. I've definitely found that the selected thicknesses are WAY off. For two pieces of 1/8in butted at a 90 degree angle, I have to set it to 1/4 inch to get any weld penetration at all. I'd think I'd be looking at burn-through at that point, but nope, just barely welds.
    One question I've been completely unable to find an answer to is: what is the cheapest air compressor that will get me cutting 1/4in mild steel with the plasma cutter on this thing? Their official specs list a pressure and CFM that seem absolutely outlandish for any shop compressor under $1400. Is that right, or is it just another case of their docs being incorrect?
    In the end, I'm glad I have the machine, and it welds what I need it to, but I'd be very upset if I had bought it at full price with the issues it has.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  Рік тому

      I haven't looked at their recommended air compressor specs in a while, but my compressor isn't anything big or special, and it worked. It's not a super cheap compressor, but it's just a portable compressor. It's a Makita, 4.2 gallon compressor rated at 4.2 CFM at 90PSI. It will not cut continuously. I set the output pressure at whatever I want for cut pressure and the tank fills to around 120 PSI. The pump doesn't quite keep up, so as soon as I start cutting, that 120 PSI in the tank starts to drop. Eventually, the actual output pressure starts to drop and before long I'll have to stop cutting and let the tank refill.
      My compressor is fine for relatively short cuts. For bigger projects I have to wait for the pressure to build back up every so often, but that's not a big deal for me. So you can definitely get away with a small-ish compressor.

      Every time I look into welders with the mindset of what I'd most want in a particular category, I almost always end up liking the Miller or Fronius. Fronius are pretty expensive but these days Miller ranges from really expensive to just crazy. Their Multimatic 235 was fairly reasonable when it first released at $2,000, but it has since crept up to almost $2,800 and that doesn't include any TIG accessories. In that range, the Fronius Transteel 2200 is a bit more full-featured for the price (well particularly in regards to being dual voltage, which the MM235 is not). But the Fronius is a bit annoying with the proprietary TIG and MIG connections.
      What processes do you need and which are the most important? Many multi-process welders focus on one or another. It's a shame the Lincoln Power MIG 210MP has gone up quite a bit recently as well. It used to be a pretty reasonably priced multi-process option that had a decent reputation for performance and reliability from what I've read.
      As for lower priced options, there is a Hobart multi-process machine for around $1,300, but I don't now about its performance or reliability. There are a few Everlast options. They have wildly mixed opinions online. Some rave about the performance and value, others have anecdotal horror stories about failures and customer service issues.

I’ll still get the 205DS as for the prices they are now, I’m ok with a throwaway multiprocess unit. But I’d rather throw away a couple hundred bucks over a thousand! Super thankful for this review!

      I have purchased the MP200 and since I am a new welder I'm not familiar with all the specs. What I do know is it has weld everything I needed it to. Mig or Tig worked just fine for me. I never used a plasma cutter so when I used it I was impressed with what it could do. No where else have I found a unit that could do it all in one machine. Being new I was not a sure of the settings I needed to use. This sets it for you with the ability to change the settings and store the settings for future use.
      Overall welding capabilities outweigh specs in a manual.

    Another thing to consider: I think it is clear that the duty cycle ratings are not based on anything real or any actual testing. They are completely fabricated. Consider that they have a duty cycle percentage listed for stick welding at 200 amps. The machine cannot physically do that. So what are the rest of the percentages based on? My guess: Nothing.

    Thanks for your review. I think Yeswelder, at the end of the day, is stuck competing at a price point where they need to match the crazy claimed output figures of the other Chinese welders on Amazon. When you get a tiny $70 welder from some no-name company advertising 200 Amps, most people who aren't knowledgeable will reflexively buy those rather than a welder that costs several times as much and advertises true specs. Think LED flashlights, 18650 batteries, etc etc. It's all very sad.

      I agree. The online marketplaces (and even some physical stores) are being flooded with cheap products, in every sense of the word. I've got nothing against someone spending less if they don't need something fancy or industrial quality. Quite frankly, Miller, Lincoln, ESAB, etc. are getting stupid expensive. But we're getting a flood of products (as you say, not just welders but everything from kitchen products, outdoor products, cameras, furniture...) where the seller seems only concerned with being able to advertise the cheapest price in order to get the sale, and to heck with quality, reliability, durability, honest claims, having the actual features claimed, or in some cases, even working at all. Sometimes it's frustrating trying to even find something that ISN'T a cheap piece of junk. There are times when a situation calls for a product that won't give a bunch of problems and will hold up well. In that case I'm willing to pay more to get quality, but it's sometimes nearly impossible to find an option that isn't cheap junk.

    • @martinschuessler1936
      @martinschuessler1936 Рік тому

      Fully agree. People on Amazon are mostly concerned about price, which is not a problem in and of itself. It does, however, attract a buyer that is not in the market for a professional machine. When you have to market to that segment, you almost have to fudge the numbers to make a sale. Maybe Yeswelder is currently in a situation where their machines are better than some of the bottom-of-the-barrel stuff (they are at least trying to innovate), but they can't charge enough to set themselves completely apart from the other cheap stuff.
      Let's not forget that Yeswelder is a Chinese company. Unfortunately, Chinese culture only values success and honesty is not a consideration. I wouldn't doubt if the people here in the US care about your opinion but their hands are tied by corporate.
      As for me: I'm in the market for a cheap stick welder and it still sounds like the YWA160 is a good machine to go with for the very limited use it'll see from me (I'm an electrical engineer). At least the current adjustment is accurate. I wish someone reviewed cheap plasma cutters the way you review these welding machines. I completely neglected to thank you for your data-driven analysis of these machines, which is all that really matters to someone like me!

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  2 роки тому

      I understand that most of my reviews are based on a sample size of one. I do try to get a second machine wherever possible if I find an issue that seems to clearly be a defect, or I at least point out that it could just be a defect or sample variation. However, at this point I've tested the Yeswelder MP200, two MIG 205DS units, one ARC 205DS and their ARC 400Q. All but the ARC 400Q say they are capable of 200 or 205 amps when stick welding but top out at 160. The ARC 400Q puts out half what the display shows when running on 240V, single phase and tops out at 200 amps, not 400. I do not have access to three phase power to see if it would actually provide the claimed 400 amps from three phase power.
      Four Yeswelder models, five separate machines and not one of them meets the claimed specs. Not to mention that The MP200, ARC 205DS and MIG205DS all put out the same 160 amps of stick welding current, while claiming 200. At this point if I found a Yeswelder that could do what it claimed, THAT would seem like quality control variation, lol. And as I've said before, 160 amps of stick output may be enough for most people and may still be okay for the money. All the more reason they should just rate the machines accurately.
      Keep in mind, this failure to meet the claimed output and drastic variation from what is shown on the display is extremely common with cheap, generic welders. I've tested a lot of generic welders at this point and this is a common enough problem that I don't believe it's a mere QA issue.
      One good sample doesn't prove there are no issues, but a single bad sample means there was at least one bad sample. It's just a matter of whether it's one bad unit slipping through, or whether it's an endemic problem. At this point, I'm confident it's not a one-off.

    I understand the frustration with false advertising, cheap stingers, cheap ground clamps etc. etc. but you must remember these are hobby machines marked to "hobby welders" and "DIY guys" building weekend projects in their garage. As a hobby welder I ask myself these two questions when considering purchasing one of these "budget" machines. Can I afford the machine? Will it do what I need it to do? If the answer to those two questions is "yes" then I'm a happy customer because it has met my needs. If not, then I either don't purchase the machine or I return it and try something else. Discrepancies with the specs, performance and documentation is just par for the course and expected at this price point. (unfortunately) Just like the saying goes "you get what you pay for". Purchasing a hobby welding machine is a perfectly good example of why that phrase exists. If I'm not ok with the downsides of a budget welding machine then I need to be prepared to pay 4 to 5 times the price to get a machine that I can be happy with. For a lot of hobby folks (myself included) purchasing a reputable brand name welding machine for hobby welding and weekend projects is not an option. I'm just happy these affordable machines exist even with all the discrepancies and downfalls because without them, I wouldn't be able to afford this great hobby.
    Please don't think I'm trying to discredit your video or your findings. I really like what you do in these videos and it's "eye opening" information that I think is good to know. My comment is only my personal opinion from my personal viewpoint on this subject. We all have different opinions and viewpoints based on our own personal needs.

      I understand where you are coming from. And I agree that less than stellar build quality, a lack of high-end features, cheap accessories and lower output and duty cycle are to be expected with a cheaper, "budget" machine. And I have no problem at all with someone being satisfied with any product. If the welder meets someone's needs and they are happy with it, that's great.
      But I respectfully disagree that we should expect or allow inaccurate specs and inaccurate info on data tags to become par for the course with a company like Yeswelder, who is trying to position themselves as a big name in welding. I understand that if I buy a generic welder off Amazon or eBay and it has incorrect specs, that shouldn't be surprising. Many of these "companies" don't care and don't have any accountability, so that kind of thing is going to happen. I still don't like it, but it is what it is. But Yeswelder is really pushing hard to present themselves as something else, something better, something more legitimate.
      I see two possibilities. The first option is that people would buy the machine anyway if Yeswelder was just honest about the fact that stick output was 160 amps max and they would appreciate the display more closely matching output. In that case, just be honest! You have nothing to lose. The other option is that people wouldn't be willing to purchase the machine based on the value it represented if they were honest about the output, in which case they are actively, deliberately defrauding customers and are misrepresenting their machine and its capabilities to any agency they happen to be using to verify safety and regulatory compliance (which I doubt they are doing anyway). Either way, I don't think we should allow a company to grow and become massively successful off the back of false advertising that they absolutely do not seem willing to fix.

      That's totally fine. I have no problem with someone liking Yeswelder machines, being satisfied with the performance and value of Yeswelder machines, or even singing their praises if that's how they feel.
      There are plenty of Chinese companies that sell products in the US and who would be called out for blatantly false advertising, inaccurate specs and intentionally deceptive programming of a device to mask these inaccuracies. DJI, Z-Cam, Lenovo, ZTE, Hisense, Oppo, Xiaomi, sE Electronics, etc. Are any of those companies perfect? Surely not. Any company can make mistakes, do shady things, make a poor product, etc. But regardless of the country of operation, I don't believe they should be given a pass to clearly, knowingly, repeatedly and continuously misrepresent, mislabel and deceptively program their products.
      Yeswelder took in millions of dollars in funding for the MP200. The MP200 is currently $1,000 on their website. This is not some super cheap machine. $1,000 is a LOT of money.
      Yeswelder is pushing their brand all over the place. the hashtag "why we weld" thing is all over the internet and even in my email box. This is a company who, in their words, is a passionate about welding with a love for the industry and is making high-quality, state-of-the art, safe, high-performance equipment. But at the same time, they are releasing welders that haven't been submitted to any safety or regulatory agency for any kind of testing or certification. Yet they print those agency certification codes on every one of their completely inaccurate data tags. With the welders that actually include manuals, those manuals are full if inaccuracies and misinformation. The machines themselves are very often not capable of what they claim and are often programmed so the display makes it LOOK like they are.
      I just think that if they are going to advertise that they actually care about their customers, care about quality, care about the industry and are committed to improving and becoming part of the welding community, then they should absolutely be held accountable for their blatant disregard for honest advertising and blatant misrepresentation of specs and performance.

      It looks like those are results from your own testing that you are sharing, right? Thanks for sharing. It's always nice to have more data points. Once in a while, I will test a second of the same machines, but the majority of the time, I'm only looking at a "sample size" of one unit.
      Yeah, it was certainly an easier machine to justify at the $500-ish price than $1,000. For me, the main issue is the fact that they publish false specs, program the machine to display incorrect readings, and refuse to fix it. It's like the $100 (or even sub-$100) welders that advertise 250 amps and only put out 130-ish. A 130 amp stick welder is pretty capable, especially for $100 or less. Why lie?
      I guess I'm just at a point where, after seeing it in so many products (not just welders), I'm no longer willing to find it "acceptable" for companies to lie, simply because their products are "cheap." Maybe Yeswelder isn't even intentionally lying. Maybe the manufacturer who is building these things for them is shafting them. But if that's the case, Yeswelder should be just as upset (if not more so), than their customers.

      @bigtb1717 If you ever been to the back streets of Kowloon in Hong Kong where they pedal off brand electronics to people you would understand. My experience is from the late 90s early 2000s. Doubt it has changed much. I highly doubt Yeswelder is making their own machines. They are probably using an oem subcontracter's design and rebadging. It be interesting if someone tested their 2024 model of the mp200.

    I am no pro. But None of my other welders run like crap on .035 solid core wire @ 220v welding 14 gauge steel. I feel very disappointed with this welder with all the hype. Other users say I am crazy being too picky. When I weld not only i rely on the gauge reading settings you kinda can have a feel to the sound of the weld as it arcs to know you have the right settings. I cant explain it. My gut feeling this welder is underpowered weld like crap and u have to mess alot with the settings. Like i said its a gut feeling when i weld it only happens with this model. If this welder was fully and accurately measured and tested I believe it will fail sadly .

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  2 роки тому

      TIG is DC only, scratch start and no foot pedal or other remote amperage control. It's not designed for aluminum TIG and is basically worst-case scenario for aluminum TIG.
      As for MIG, it doesn't support a spool gun out of the box. You might be able to get aluminum wire to feed through the gun or get an aluminum capable MIG gun, but it's really not designed for aluminum MIG either.

    Rebranded junk! Lookup Keygree welders. Can be had for 150-200 all day online. This one is a rebranded Keygree 250 as far as I can see. I have a error 1 code on display. Units only been used for 30 min since ai bought it...They said out of warranty nothing they can do.. which I get.. however they also would not allow me to talk to support direct, only a call center. They also blocked my email when I tried to ask them about what part needs replacing or what error code meant... Buyer beware. Hope my incident was a fluke. Really liked the welder when it worked but feeling a bit hung out to dry.

      Didn't the data tag say you needed to give it 45 amps at 120v to fully get that 160 amp. I was able to get displayed 110 amps, 100 amps measured on a 7014 1/8 rod with a dedicated 15 amp outlet, one foot from the breaker. If I long arc it it would trip. There is hot start it was measured 135 amps. Haven't tried any more measurements, not till I get my weld fume exhaust setup. I used a $30 amazon clamp on DC amp meter, take that for what it's worth.

    I would think they are in it for the money, somebody else is putting them up to this.. I will stick with my Esab/Fronius/HTP/ welders, they do what they say and then some, yes they cost a lot more ,but they are so much better. I have seen other UA-camrs go at great lengths as to how good yeswelders are , you can tell that they have sold out to inferior equipment.
    I saw one guy do as you did and call them out on how bad his MS205 was, he was not impressed, at least he was a not corporate sell out.Yeswelder is banking on advertising hype to sell, just like all the other charlatans out there. Remember there is a sucker born every minute, don't be one.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  2 роки тому +2

      On Yeswelder's UA-cam channel they now have a couple instructional videos. They didn't produce the videos, they are made by other UA-cam creators. In the setup video the guy went on about how the machine is smart and will choose the amperage and voltage for you automatically if you pick the thickness you are welding, but I could clearly see on the screen that he had the voltage adjusted down 1.4V from the auto setting. He didn't mention that, lol.
      And you know what, if someone is "in it for the money" that's fine. It's not like an actor General Motors hires to be in one of their commercials is going to point out things they DON'T like about the car. In the same way, I wouldn't expect that guy, on Yeswelder's channel, to say anything negative about the welder.
      But if General Motors' latest V8 engine was found to actually be a 6 cylinder with two completely fake cylinders, I would call them out. Especially since they didn't just advertise is wrong, they went through the trouble of adding fake cylinders to further the lie.
      In the same way, Yeswelder didn't just say this would be a "200 amp" machine and that it would run 6010. They specifically programmed the display to go to 200 amps and printed data tags that show duty cycles at 200 amps. And they put a 6010 mode in the settings. They can no longer claim they are at the mercy of whatever the factory gives them. Yeswelder are knowingly lying at this point. Maybe the stick output is a small thing. Maybe people think I'm making too big of a deal about this. But thousands of people have spent millions of dollars on a kickstarter campaign for this machine. It's not just a matter of "sorry folks, turns out it's only 160 amps when stick welding. We had to pack a lot in here and we still think it's going to do everything you need." Nope, none of that. It's just lies and deceptive programming to make you think it can do something it cannot.
      If someone likes this welder or talks it up, fine. That's their prerogative. Yeswelder, in my opinion, are the ones who need to be held to account.

    Ansi Certified? AWS Certified? ASME? Iscet Certified? Are you? Mpi send me a machine and ill give you a expert opinion.

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717  2 роки тому

      The simple answer is no, I am not a certified welder.
      ISCET: I hold no certificates from the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians. Their training courses sound interesting though. I may look into it.
      ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers): They do not certify welders, they certify products. A company could get a welded product, i.e. a welded pressure vessel that they sell, certified by ASME.
      ANSI: In what way could an individual become certified by ANSI? I don't know of a way, but I'm no expert in all things ANSI. Do you know a way? My understanding is that they come up with safety and operational standards for various products and processes. A company could certify that a product, process or even a facility meets a particular, published ANSI standard. But again, I'm not an expert in all things ANSI.
      AWS: No, I do not have any AWS certifications.
      I'm not sure if your last sentence was a statement or a question. Are you asking me to send you a welder? Someone else? Or just stating that if someone DID send you a welder, you could give it an expert evaluation and opinion? Do you believe I got something wrong in my video? I'm happy to correct anything I got wrong.
